Buy the onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box: fave.co/446aHp1
    ・・・・・・・
Walmart has put out a brand new version of the Onn. 4K Streaming Box with Google TV on board, and it’s only $20 MSRP. That means you don’t have to wait around for a deal or some other incentive to get one: it’s that price all the time. But that didn’t answer the biggest, lingering question surrounding this new 4K streamer. In the end, if the software was still mediocre as it was for the first version, that would continue to hamper this as a proper substitute for the Chromecast with Google TV. So, we went and bought one for ourselves, and the results are pretty staggering.

This TV box is way better and way more affordable than Chromecast. I recently had to switch after my Chromecast died. It's faster, the UI is less sluggish, it comes with longer cables, RetroArch actually works on it (Chromecast broke the compatibility with the October update in 2022), the remote has a better grip. I'm very happy with my purchase, considering that I had to spend 2.5 times less money.

Most people don't know this, but a big reason it costs $20 is because it doesn't do Dolby Vision and Atmos. Companies have to pay extra for Dolby Vision and Atmos even just to put it on the box it came in.

You need to do more testing. The last version of the ONN streamer would frequently lose connection with the remote and require a power down restart to resolve. If they haven't fixed that, this thing isn't worth using. Full stop.
But you are the only reviewer that addressed the biggest failing of Google's streamer....the design of the remote which is absolutely terrible. It's so bad, I took the remote from my last gen ONN streamer and paired it to my Google streamer to get the best out of the experience. Huge improvement in feel and ergonomics. Come on Google, form should never dominate over function when it comes to a remote.

@@kennopalus I looked into it a bit further, and the truth is the best thing about it is the price difference.
As I mentioned previously about the Chromecast With Google TV, this has the storage limitation - it's 8GB storage, with only 4.4GB of actual usable storage.
So effectively, you're only getting a 4GB device. Which is a shame, because the Google TV interface and functionally is beautiful. But it's handcuffed by the fact that you can only install a limited few of your favorite streaming apps without running out of storage space.

I own one of these. I've had it for a bit. One of the downsides is you have to reboot it weekly for it to work right. It will loose connection to the remote that requires a reboot. If you start filling up the storage with apps it starts freezing. It looks amazing out of box, but after frequent usage you will relize you get what you pay for. I do like the remote form factor better. You're better off buying the Chromecast with Google TV. Pro tip: if you lose your original Chromecast with Google TV remote you can pair it with the remote that comes with this unit and is much cheaper than buying a new one.

I have the Walmart google onn device and have it in my fire tv , it gives me another option with more storage.
I did have the Google Chromecast and in my opinion, it was more powerful in ways I can't put into words , for one thing , it took over my remote on my fire tv, the Walmart onn didn't .
It also seemed like the sound and picture quality was better with the Google made dongle .
I still wouldn't get one again , I like my set up .

I liked the product and I enjoyed the way the remote felt, however, one thing we noticed is how stiff the remote felt. Try holding the remote for several hours and you will know what mean as compared to a Chromecast remote.

Why on earth would you "hold the remote for several hours"? Change shows or settings and set it down. My biggest problem is always finding the remote because its never in my hand.

The chromecast is the better device but not by a whole lot ... In many ways the devices are kinda identical.. Same OS ( android 12) same amount of ram , same amount of storage...
The chromecast has some premium features the ONN lack... like support for all formats Dolby Atoms HDR10+ (tho ONN has hdr10 and HLG)... It can framerate match content either seamlessly or non seamlessly..... The ONN can only non seemless no framerate match....
Performance seems about maybe 10% better overall on the Chromecast.... Also I think the picture looks slightly better on chromecast ( tho that is personal preference ) ...
The ONN wins in the remote but only because the googles is weird and small...
Overall I'd say the ONN wins on value tho you are getting like 90% of the features/performance at less than 50% of the cost...
Tho the Chromecast is just better.. but like I said it's not drastically so...
For anyone with a low end recent TV or an older TV they can't use the higher end premium features anyways... SO the Onn wins...
And for someone with a newer mid to higher end TV... It makes more sense to go with the Chromecast... for the premium features and support (android 14??)

8gb of storage is horrible. The first Google streaming device had 8gb and you had to uninstall apps to run new ones! Garbage. Get Nvidia Shield and have no issues.

I guess it depends. I never ran into that issue. How many apps do you have?

    • @MarcusThomson
      @MarcusThomson Před rokem

CZcams, Google Play, CZcams TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney, and then Kodi is fun but uses the most. Even without Kodi I had to delete apps and that was before 4k!

@@MarcusThomson huh! Very strange, I have a very similar set of apps. I can try to see if this tv box supports moving apps to the external storage through the hub if you would like that. I already have a hub connected to it but I mostly use it to hook up a webcam so I can do Google Duo calls through the TV.

I still prefer Chromecast with Google TV. I know a lot of people talk about how the Chromecast remote don't have a lot of buttons and all that. But for me I can care less long as the remote work. I don't need all the extra stuff on my remote like my remote that came with my TV it self. I prefer to go with something more well popular name brand stuff which is Google itself. Like when it comes to certain things I definitely need name brand and a definitely a popular name brand as well.

I'm never usually a pedant, however during the video it was emphasised this was NOT an Android TV device, its a Google TV device, and there is a difference between bootloader and how that works, to the play protect on the apps and lack of side loading. You are right that AndroidTV boxes are a pandora's box of nastiness in many cases, Google TV does work differently and is designed for OEM safety.
