The water temperature only needs to be lower than the boiling point of whatever you have in the boiling flask in order for it to condense, otherwise you are using more energy than needed. In your case, the water is very cold, causing the vapors to condense quickly at the bottom end of the condenser, which is dumping cold liquid into the turkey tail, and when that siphons into your boiling flask, it drops the temperature, meaning your mantle is working harder than it needs to be, and you are using excess energy to continually cool your condensing water, and also to heat the contents of your boiling flask. I run my soxhlet using room temperature water recirculate from a giant tub, and it will naturally cool itself some as the heat is transferred to it. Another options which I have done while distilling is to run the return warm water off the condenser through a radiator with finds and have a fan blowing through it - this will remove some of the heat and get the water temperature back down to room temperature. It uses less power than a chiller. Your boiling flask is also overfilled and it is bubbling... this creates pressure spikes up through the soxhlet extractor. Set up your boiling flask so at maximum volume it is only slightly over half full. You don't need the heatsinks on the soxhlet itself - actually be design its supposed to be warmed up some via the way it contacts the boiling flask. Warm ethanol will extract much better than cold. For my stuff, usually 4-8 rounds of the soxhlet is all that is needed for a full extraction (species dependent). For the soxhlet many people run a thimble (glassware filter) but I use organic muslim tea bags - they come in various sizes and have draw strings, use the size that will best fit your soxhlet. You need to filter so that no solids go back into your boiling flask.
I do plan to switch the primary condensers to drain to waste cold tap water, which, especially in winter, is plenty cold. Then, I'll use the chest freezer running the secondary trap condensers at much lower temps to catch all the high and light compounds. For the flask, this was a first run with the rope like this. Previous runs with the level below the mantle rope, it scorched the foam because of the hot glass beng dry fired. I actually ordered some femcap s to help remedy the round boiling flasks, commonly used in brewing for boil over prevention. I also ordered a tri clamp 6x12 spool and 7.5" tall 360* sight glass to be my next boiler. I'll be running a 6" 850w heat clamp way down at the bottom to avoid scorching and boil over.

That answers my confusion as to what the point was boiling when alcohol isn't touching enrolls until its cold....just do cold extraction....unless heat was his way of moving it threw nonstop..lol
Warm+ almost always Best.
Plus mixing water/alcohol same time changes boiling temp as well as debris w it anyway..still not very useful cold...in end.
Cool stuff man. Love watching your videos. I just did my first soxhlet run a couple weeks ago with lions mane. I did like you said and ran a a thimble full and once it ran clear I put fresh lions mane in and ran a second. I feel like it’s much more concentrated than a soak method. Cool part I like is at the end I can take the mushrooms out and take some solvent off to concentrate it even more. Cool shit man. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Thanks for your service also!!
Soxhlet is pretty awesome, especially when you run a larger extraction chamber and pack it full. You really make it as concentrated as you want.

I’m running smaller setup at a reduced pressure to save on heat energy required to distill solvents.
In certain extractions and isolations heat is not great can break down the targeted molecules/complexes. Being able to control extraction temps is real nice.
It works great, just make sure you seal the drain plug and seams really well. Fill the coolant to cover the top coils and keep a pump circulating if your not using glycol so ice only forms on the outside.
@@MyersMushroomsFarms sweet! My setup is small olny 500ml soxlet so I filled the freezer ~1/4 way up with a full 5Gal bucket in the middle. Let it all freeze semi solid around a 360mm CPU radiator sitting the 5Gal.
The pump for the loop sits submerged in a single gallon water reservoir I have set up on the ledge above the compressor. While charging I pulse the pump every few mins to prevent the loop from freezing solid (could use glycol in the loop). When system is in use the pump runs nonstop. This prevents loss of energy from the constant movement of water.
Coolant temp can be adjusted by adding more radiators or more water in the reservoir.
Used 3/8 bulkhead barbs and drilled out the door to pass inlet and outlet as well as power pass thru a 1/4” hole so It can be closed. Then seal up with some eps and glue.

Hi! I notice you mix water and ethanol in one extraction, whereas ive been doing an alchohol extraction and then a water extraction separately and then mix i the final products....can i just mix the water and ethanol together in one run rathet thsn doing them separately? Would save me a lot of time!!

the lions mane extract at 8.15 is looking really potent :D do you stirr this and tap it like this on bottle ?? or do you do something with it before filling flasks?
I'm trying to keep it all in solution so I'm playing with the mixture and temps. I'd prefer it to look like the milky ones not the cloudy blobs that fall out of solution. All still very much in the beginning R&D phase.
@@MyersMushroomsFarms i understand! :D i have seen tinctures sold like this , and the flask is labeld to be shaken before use :) i have made my own tinctures aswell and they were unseparated at first, but after a few days on a shelf they separeted like that. Have you ever had that happen to you?

@bradb82 you loose a ton of capacity and this extractor can't accept one.
My only concern would be thermal degradation of the target compounds. But you don't know until you test it.
That's where vacuum comes in. I can boil as low as 80F with this rig.

I'm not collecting any distillate, it's all caught in the loop. No distilling going on here, just a reflux of solvents.
What are those big driers in the background that look like fridges?

O. It just occurred to me. Add salt. The freezing temp of salt water is much lower. You will be able to get the water below freezing and not have to worry about ice.
I did do this at first but then you run into corrosion issues. I now run glycol and can get it down into the 20s but then you need insulated lines for everything because it frosts then drips.
@@MyersMushroomsFarms I live and run my small farm off grid. I’m actually considering using a freezer and radiator for ac at night. Just to blow cool air while I sleep. Figuring out how to keep the water is actually a plus for me. We truck in water when we don’t get enough rain so letting the water stack up in a bucket is a plus for us. I spent a few hours today just running numbers with a buddy. We think this is actually a doable small scale solar ac. As for the cooling for the condenser. It’s a brilliant idea.

Have you played around with ultrasonic extraction? For mushrooms it seems to be the fastest and best way for a wide spectrum product
No, I haven't, but I have had them quoted, and it's thousands for only a liter or two capacity.

Why heat the Alcohol up at all other then to move it to the product ?
It cold going in to the product. Heating just brings it back up to where it bypasses product hot until cooled back to liquid then touches product for 1st time...soaks..drips....boils....gas....cooled...product.... Drips etc.
Why not just soak it 24hrs..press change to fresh product. Soak...w same alcohol as 1st...as many times as needed to concentrate as normal??
If ya wanna boil the concentrate and weed off some alcohol do it...for stronger concentration.
Watching this on anyone's channel is the same... Heated alcohol is just how to move the alcohol through...because doesn't touch Sharon's until cooled to liquid again.

This is an awful solution. Awful. Soxhlets are what non chemists use to try to be chemists, but without the expected outcome and without the simple ease of better methods. You need my help. This is expensive, unnecessary, and ugly

I disagree also. I use a soxhlet for herb extractions and mushroom extracts. I also do traditional marc in menstrum from 6 weeks to months and water decoction for 4 days. I have found there is different results and different compounds extracted throughout. My point is it is still a very effective tool and has been around since the 16th century or earlier. You must play to understand all the fun equipment out there!
