Tbf her voice just sounds like that, i dont think theres any autotune. Even in her accapella videos, her tone is just like that sometimes. It was like this in 2013 too, but more extreme. The scratchy sound is her singing through her nodules. Sometimes its really raspy, sometimes it's super clean. Even in her old VOL performance, there still kind of is that same hazy sound, except she has more air.
I mean, you can't really deny that there was autotune assisting her. It mostly sounds correct because she was hitting the right notes, but you barely hear the prominent rasp from her acapellas and concerts. She just slid I think too fast into the "sweet destinyyYy" and then "TuRNED OUT TO BE" sounded too low for the intended notes and it sounded robotic. Overall, she didn't need it and I wish she did it more raw.

It's not making me think less of her because I know what she's been through woth her voice and the backlash she gets for a single performance. I wish it was like her instagram snippets where it was only a phone mic, that's it.
I know it sounds like the 2020 one has a little autotune, but I can tell you from listening to her sing with no mic recently, that's just how her voice sounds like. Especially the riffs and runs, she got so ridiculously agile since her high chest belts started deteriorating. she's overall still great, but I think her voice developed in a way that now she sounds better singing r&b, gospel and jazz rather than the pop stuff she used to make.
That’s true ! Her 2020 tone is so light and high it seems autotuned but it’s just her nature voice that sounds like this ( she is a soprano after all ) ! And yes her agility is so crazy, her riffs are so fast that sometimes you don’t even notice them if you don’t pay attention
It is autotuned, If you’re tone deaf just say that. No shame, everyone uses it. Its really easy to hear the autotune warping her voice, but you still need to be close enough to the center of the note for it to work.

Idk man a vocal coach that can't even imitate or copy what she preaches throughout the video? Criticizing someone whose voice ages after 30 years of not only singing, but producing, touring around the world and resinging almost her entire catalogues into incredible collections of remixes? This wasn't autotune at all. She just have a really good microphone. Mariah has always had good clarity through her tone and range. Her falsetto through the years has gotten alot heavier and sounds autotuny
90’s mariah = Ultra talented, fresh voice with lot of stamina but not really experienced and as creative as now 2020 mariah= Still talented , way less resources (vocal wise )but more experienced and way more creative with her runs. Better low notes and mid belts, super quick runs but strained belts above D5. In my opinion she is still as talented as she was. The way she still manage to sing her songs that are really difficult now is as or more impressive as her vocals in her peak
the thing is people CAN'T understand that her voice is more damaged that before. And why is that damaged? due to nodulesss and lack of rest/sleep. Also, the weather is a big thing and alcohol
You should listen to Mariah’s acapellas and impromptu performances especially in the year 2013 - her voice runs were even more agile and “computerised” sounding than this - but they weren’t. She has an incredible gift.
Might I add she also had a very gospel approach when she first debuted. She changed her technique and style a few years after as she transitioned more to an RnB sound.

I really don’t understand how people hear auto tune...? I think she has a natural timbre that’s can come off as auto tune. It was definitely prevalent in 2013 she sounded almost robotic but completely live

Even though the technical deterioration is important to note, I think it’s weird to have this analysis without seeing a progression in her vocal health over the years. Comparing a 2005, and a 2015 performance would be useful to understand her current state.
You know she’s famous for switching from high to low notes just like that she could even go lower than that... that’s just how she wanted to perform this song a different way singers get bored singing the song the same way over the years

She always sings her songs in different keys according to what she pleases in different performances. Even that first 90's performance isn't in the original key.

You can watch her 2020 acapella moment and watch her 90's acapella moments. Then you'll see her voice was and still is naturally sound autotuned. Its very interesting you know cause not every singer does that and when i try that i easily ran out of air. Her techniques and breath control always really good (if not all the time). The 1990 performance of Vision of Love here is in the original key. But she lowered the key half a step when singing it live only 1 year and ironically often added higher belts in the live performances when she lowered the key.

In 1990, Auto tune didnt exist. It didnt come into use in studios until 1998 when Cher used it on “Believe” She is the first one to use it. Even if Auto tune existed, Mariah would not have used it, because her pride is strong, and she is a perfectionist musician.

Bare in mind, she smoked before signing (5 years) and said she was glad she was made to quit because it was starting to “mess with her voice”. Just imagine how she sounded before she smoked and how that could’ve helped her OVER TIME😫😫
The haze/rasp is caused by nodules, mostly. She got no auto-tunein 2020 version. She sang live with no effects way back in 2013 a surprise performance for fans. Her runs sounds like autotuned -- and it's raw.

One thing to take into account here is that in the old performance you chose to compare the newer one to, the song is sung slower which gave Mariah more free range to do what she wanted and play around with the notes. As far as the autotune is concerned, around 2010 when she released her 2nd xmas album, I felt that her runs began to sound more computerized but after seeing her do runs live and on random videos, it was clear that she had just gotten faster with them. Her album "MIAM" displays some of these super fast runs. One thing I'll give Mariah is that she's always adding something to her skillset.
The 2020 version was raw and Live! Mariah sounded amazing in both performances. I understand you do voice lessons but I hate when people jump on a bandwagon of picking people apart. Mariah is still one of the best singers of all time. Can't we just respect and appreciate how good she sounds and that she is still entertaining us.

There is autotune, but she is singing on pitch enough for it to not warp her voice as much. She definitely does not need it imo but she used it for most studio and some live from 1997-present. Hope that helps

Lambily, you guys need to relax and stop with the cyberbullying. The vocal coach told no lies. She was honest and respectful in her comments. She even provided examples of sounds and positions to explain her points. Nothing she said was untrue in this video. She clearly admires Mariah's talent and she knows this song very well, which shows that she herself is actually a fan of Mariah's. Im a major lamb, and it is clear as day that Mariah dubbed and tweaked that 2020 performance. Stop being delusional in thinking otherwise. Although it is important to factor in that Mariah has had nodules her entire life/career, it is not an excuse for the poor technique and the mismanagement of her current voice. On top of nodules, Mariah has a bad habit of drinking wine and champagne daily and she is a self-declared insomniac. She doesn't sleep as much as she should and she has battled stress/anxiety/depression her whole life (which affect the voice too). Mariah does not rehearse or warm up her voice properly anymore. Mariah does not take direction or technical vocal advice anymore. Mariah's breathing, jaw, mouth, everything is constricted. Mariah also hasn't taken proper breaks in 30 years, which is all on her. All of this affects your voice. This video did not shame Mariah or diminish her talent and legacy. Stop being unfair with your comments towards this video analysis. And it doesn't mean to say Mariah can't sing well or give a good performance anymore. The 2020 performance sounds physically painful and the technique and vocal execution is off- there is no sugar coating it any more than the vocal coach already sugar coated it.
But its plenty of performances from 1990-1995 where she attempted a note and she either cracked or had to sing lower due to those nodules... nothing has really changed about her voice, because when she gets plenty of rest she always slays... only the lambs know that 😌

Not everyone knows the excruciating details of someone's vocal histories but a vocal coach can look at past performance and current to see how things have progressed . Things to do, things to not do. Things that could impact a singer later on if they carry bad habits or have a hard touring schedule for years on end. It's OK. Mariah sounds great. Then and now. She said Mariah sounds great. hey, lambs, keep it respectful. Y'all not mariah to be that offended by her inputs. Remember, she's an expert who worked with the same vocal and audio technicalities unlike many of us who merely had analytical points of view as audiences. Also, can we stop with all the "her voice is just really like that in natural state nowadays, she's just perfect" ok? While it's a valid point, it does not negate the fact that her voice was altered in the recording. As lambs, I think we should be open to hearing these criticisms/comment about her voice because in that way, we learn more about others' perspectives, especially the unbiased judgments outside the lambily. It's also sickening to hear the same set of arguments as to what is happening to her voice especially in her live performances several years back. I'm really sorry, but it really feels like we're stretching out the reasoning sometimes so we can force ourselves to be amazed by her voice, when honestly, sometimes, they are not as good really even considering the vocal nodules. Personally, though, even though I'm not pretending about her flaws, I still choose to support her no matter what because I know sincerely she has the natural talent with what she had already proven as a legend. (also, pls stop calling honest lambs "toxic". Shining a light on her negative sides does not equate to hating on her.)
I think you’re not comparing like for like at some points (the 2020 version abridges the original more), but all the comments are still valid and fair 👍 I like that you contextualise a 50 year old woman’s voice who has been a huge start and sung (and talked as you said) extensively for 30 years vs a fresh 20 year old in one of her first big performance. Also interesting to note that she has nodules (apparently...) and has had them since her youth, before she was famous. Although she has said that her voice doctor has said this is part of the reason for the ease with which she can access her whistle etc, so maybe they’re not vocal nodules as we know them. Either way, it’s been a struggle to deal with them as she’s aged and sang more and more - despite good technique!

The 2020 live version actually sounds more like the original studio version , she’s always critiqued herself on performances and says she should have done that line like this or that line like that !! Im living for the fact that unlike other vocal coach reactions you dont limit yourself by only talking about what the singer is doing stylistically but also giving an actual critique and pointing out flaws. I hope it stays the same. Also the "Haze" that you describe is mostly the sound that she produces now with the vocal damage that her nodules had made

1990 was her earliest or we can say her debut low in experience in term of how she would produced her voice, power control and creativity on her riffs and runs, compared to now, she is well experienced knowing of her vocal ability and creatively more experienced producing her vocals. So this two era is incomparable to me, I would prefer 1990 vs 1994-1996, that would be awesome.
I'm surprised you didn't point out that young Mariah dodged the whistle in her performance. When she began she did a little whistle, but not during the sign. Current Mariah sang the whistle note in her performance. I like how young Mariah took her time and stretched it all out and current Mariah added little extra flairs here and there. Young MC opens mouth and paces herself, Current MC more closed mouth and speedy.

Mariah has had vocal nodules most of her life. It's weird to see a vocal coach reaction by someone who seems unaware of that fact. She's one pf the most famous cases of vocal nodules. At 20, she sounded like a mature grown woman. At 50? Her voice matured beyond that already "old" sounding timbre.
she isnt really using autotune. not much at least. from her acapella videos you can see how her voice has taken on that tone and odd agility. her voice now is....weird? a good weird. an addictive weird. ive been a mariah fan for nearly a decade and her voice has taken on some odd but really neat characteristics. i dont really understand what exactly is going on with it, but something is diffidently interesting about it now.

Not sure i agree with the point at 5:40 regarding lowering the key. Even the most disciplined and healthy singers in opera generally don't have the same repertoire 30 years later. Many sopranos drop to certain mezzo rep, or simply drop their more extreme/demanding roles. Very rare for a singer to stay in notably demanding rep for more than a decade or two.
This coach isn’t bad, but I can tell she’s not very familiar with mariahs voice technically. Mariah is using a very similar placement as she did during the mid nineties, but with age and the progression of her already present vocal nodules her tone has changed in different parts of her range that may cause a more brassy and abrasive sound. The scratchiness in her voice Ian a product of strain or pushing but is instead a result of her vocal folds malfunctioning due to hardening nodules . As for her pitch Mariah has been known to produce runs and trils that sound almost computerized when in reality it’s just her impeccable pitch placent
People here don’t seem to wanna understand that you are teaching us and not criticizing. You’re showing us the difference between a younger voice and an older voice, especially one that has been used to death in the music industry. By those standards, her voice is in great shape, but let’s not pretend there hasn’t been some obvious wear and tear. I believe that’s the point you’re making, outside of teaching us vocal techniques from the same singer today and yesterday. Teaching us vocal techniques is the point of a vocal coach reactor channel.
Exactly! I’m a huge fan and some lambs are so defensive. I mean Mariah still sounds great, her vocal abilities are impeccable and obviously not the same as during in her 20s but she is still one of the greatest vocalists out there
I prefer the newer performance. It has a darker timbre. A very prominent head tone on the voice can be annoying sometimes. The new performance has texture and more beautiful. To each their own.

Tbh if she in her 50s sounded like she did when she was in her 20s and released her first single I wouldn't believe it. I'd rather her have more difficulty now and drop the key to sing live and give us her best now. A raw live performance. Also, almost everybody on the radio today sounds super computerized so when Mariah first used it on Obsessed, everyone went crazy... bc she's Mariah. BUT with that being said, I do wish she had a voice teacher throughout her career to help her maintain her voice. Grow with her and study her voice to take care of it. I feel like the best singers today (like Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, etc) maintain a voice coach because... vocal chords chords are delicate muscles. If professional athletes keep trainers through their career, I don't see why a singer would be any different. But... I know my favorite singer. She's got a bit of an ego and would probably refuse help.

Mariah is a genius singer who creates artistically best songs with beautiful acrobatic/gymnastic voice which is nearly impossible to follow or imitate by other singers. The only singer I heard recently who can imitate or near Mariah’s voice is Morissette Amon! Observer from California.

her voice during 2013-2014 was very healthy and in a good shape and her runs were super FAST thats why it kinda sounds like autotune

It mostly sounds correct because she was hitting the right notes, but you barely hear the prominent rasp from her acapellas and concerts. She just slid I think too fast into the "sweet destinyyYy" and then "TuRNED OUT TO BE" sounded too low for the intended notes and it sounded robotic. Overall, she didn't need it and I wish she did it more raw.

I know it sounds like the 2020 one has a little autotune, but I can tell you from listening to her sing with no mic recently, that's just how her voice sounds like. Especially the riffs and runs, she got so ridiculously agile since her high chest belts started deteriorating. she's overall still great, but I think her voice developed in a way that now she sounds better singing r&b, gospel and jazz rather than the pop stuff she used to make.

It is autotuned, If you’re tone deaf just say that. No shame, everyone uses it. Its really easy to hear the autotune warping her voice, but you still need to be close enough to the center of the note for it to work.

This wasn't autotune at all. She just have a really good microphone. Mariah has always had good clarity through her tone and range. Her falsetto through the years has gotten alot heavier and sounds autotuny
90’s mariah = Ultra talented, fresh voice with lot of stamina but not really experienced and as creative as now
2020 mariah= Still talented , way less resources (vocal wise )but more experienced and way more creative with her runs. Better low notes and mid belts, super quick runs but strained belts above D5.
In my opinion she is still as talented as she was. The way she still manage to sing her songs that are really difficult now is as or more impressive as her vocals in her peak

You should listen to Mariah’s acapellas and impromptu performances especially in the year 2013 - her voice runs were even more agile and “computerised” sounding than this - but they weren’t. She has an incredible gift.
Might I add she also had a very gospel approach when she first debuted. She changed her technique and style a few years after as she transitioned more to an RnB sound.

She is the first one to use it.

I would enjoy that! That’s actually a good idea! I would be interested to know what a trained vocal coach would say about my technical approach and how I sing. There’s always room to learn and hone in my skill. ❤️
One thing to take into account here is that in the old performance you chose to compare the newer one to, the song is sung slower which gave Mariah more free range to do what she wanted and play around with the notes. As far as the autotune is concerned, around 2010 when she released her 2nd xmas album, I felt that her runs began to sound more computerized but after seeing her do runs live and on random videos, it was clear that she had just gotten faster with them. Her album "MIAM" displays some of these super fast runs. One thing I'll give Mariah is that she's always adding something to her skillset.

There is autotune, but she is singing on pitch enough for it to not warp her voice as much. She definitely does not need it imo but she used it for most studio and some live from 1997-present. Hope that helps

Lambily, you guys need to relax and stop with the cyberbullying. The vocal coach told no lies. She was honest and respectful in her comments. She even provided examples of sounds and positions to explain her points. Nothing she said was untrue in this video. She clearly admires Mariah's talent and she knows this song very well, which shows that she herself is actually a fan of Mariah's. Im a major lamb, and it is clear as day that Mariah dubbed and tweaked that 2020 performance. Stop being delusional in thinking otherwise. Although it is important to factor in that Mariah has had nodules her entire life/career, it is not an excuse for the poor technique and the mismanagement of her current voice. On top of nodules, Mariah has a bad habit of drinking wine and champagne daily and she is a self-declared insomniac. She doesn't sleep as much as she should and she has battled stress/anxiety/depression her whole life (which affect the voice too). Mariah does not rehearse or warm up her voice properly anymore. Mariah does not take direction or technical vocal advice anymore. Mariah's breathing, jaw, mouth, everything is constricted. Mariah also hasn't taken proper breaks in 30 years, which is all on her. All of this affects your voice. This video did not shame Mariah or diminish her talent and legacy. Stop being unfair with your comments towards this video analysis. And it doesn't mean to say Mariah can't sing well or give a good performance anymore. The 2020 performance sounds physically painful and the technique and vocal execution is off- there is no sugar coating it any more than the vocal coach already sugar coated it.

Not everyone knows the excruciating details of someone's vocal histories but a vocal coach can look at past performance and current to see how things have progressed . Things to do, things to not do. Things that could impact a singer later on if they carry bad habits or have a hard touring schedule for years on end. It's OK. Mariah sounds great. Then and now. She said Mariah sounds great. hey, lambs, keep it respectful. Y'all not mariah to be that offended by her inputs. Remember, she's an expert who worked with the same vocal and audio technicalities unlike many of us who merely had analytical points of view as audiences. Also, can we stop with all the "her voice is just really like that in natural state nowadays, she's just perfect" ok? While it's a valid point, it does not negate the fact that her voice was altered in the recording. As lambs, I think we should be open to hearing these criticisms/comment about her voice because in that way, we learn more about others' perspectives, especially the unbiased judgments outside the lambily. It's also sickening to hear the same set of arguments as to what is happening to her voice especially in her live performances several years back. I'm really sorry, but it really feels like we're stretching out the reasoning sometimes so we can force ourselves to be amazed by her voice, when honestly, sometimes, they are not as good really even considering the vocal nodules. Personally, though, even though I'm not pretending about her flaws, I still choose to support her no matter what because I know sincerely she has the natural talent with what she had already proven as a legend.

I like that you contextualise a 50 year old woman’s voice who has been a huge start and sung (and talked as you said) extensively for 30 years vs a fresh 20 year old in one of her first big performance.
Also interesting to note that she has nodules (apparently...) and has had them since her youth, before she was famous. Although she has said that her voice doctor has said this is part of the reason for the ease with which she can access her whistle etc, so maybe they’re not vocal nodules as we know them. Either way, it’s been a struggle to deal with them as she’s aged and sang more and more - despite good technique!

1990 was her earliest or we can say her debut low in experience in term of how she would produced her voice, power control and creativity on her riffs and runs, compared to now, she is well experienced knowing of her vocal ability and creatively more experienced producing her vocals. So this two era is incomparable to me, I would prefer 1990 vs 1994-1996, that would be awesome.
I'm surprised you didn't point out that young Mariah dodged the whistle in her performance. When she began she did a little whistle, but not during the sign. Current Mariah sang the whistle note in her performance. I like how young Mariah took her time and stretched it all out and current Mariah added little extra flairs here and there. Young MC opens mouth and paces herself, Current MC more closed mouth and speedy.

Mariah has had vocal nodules most of her life. It's weird to see a vocal coach reaction by someone who seems unaware of that fact. She's one pf the most famous cases of vocal nodules. At 20, she sounded like a mature grown woman. At 50? Her voice matured beyond that already "old" sounding timbre.
she isnt really using autotune. not much at least. from her acapella videos you can see how her voice has taken on that tone and odd agility. her voice now is....weird? a good weird. an addictive weird. ive been a mariah fan for nearly a decade and her voice has taken on some odd but really neat characteristics. i dont really understand what exactly is going on with it, but something is diffidently interesting about it now.

Not sure i agree with the point at 5:40 regarding lowering the key. Even the most disciplined and healthy singers in opera generally don't have the same repertoire 30 years later. Many sopranos drop to certain mezzo rep, or simply drop their more extreme/demanding roles. Very rare for a singer to stay in notably demanding rep for more than a decade or two.
This coach isn’t bad, but I can tell she’s not very familiar with mariahs voice technically. Mariah is using a very similar placement as she did during the mid nineties, but with age and the progression of her already present vocal nodules her tone has changed in different parts of her range that may cause a more brassy and abrasive sound. The scratchiness in her voice Ian a product of strain or pushing but is instead a result of her vocal folds malfunctioning due to hardening nodules . As for her pitch Mariah has been known to produce runs and trils that sound almost computerized when in reality it’s just her impeccable pitch placent

People here don’t seem to wanna understand that you are teaching us and not criticizing. You’re showing us the difference between a younger voice and an older voice, especially one that has been used to death in the music industry. By those standards, her voice is in great shape, but let’s not pretend there hasn’t been some obvious wear and tear. I believe that’s the point you’re making, outside of teaching us vocal techniques from the same singer today and yesterday. Teaching us vocal techniques is the point of a vocal coach reactor channel.
Exactly! I’m a huge fan and some lambs are so defensive. I mean Mariah still sounds great, her vocal abilities are impeccable and obviously not the same as during in her 20s but she is still one of the greatest vocalists out there
I prefer the newer performance. It has a darker timbre. A very prominent head tone on the voice can be annoying sometimes. The new performance has texture and more beautiful. To each their own.

Tbh if she in her 50s sounded like she did when she was in her 20s and released her first single I wouldn't believe it. I'd rather her have more difficulty now and drop the key to sing live and give us her best now. A raw live performance. Also, almost everybody on the radio today sounds super computerized so when Mariah first used it on Obsessed, everyone went crazy... bc she's Mariah. BUT with that being said, I do wish she had a voice teacher throughout her career to help her maintain her voice. Grow with her and study her voice to take care of it. I feel like the best singers today (like Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, etc) maintain a voice coach because... vocal chords chords are delicate muscles. If professional athletes keep trainers through their career, I don't see why a singer would be any different. But... I know my favorite singer. She's got a bit of an ego and would probably refuse help.

Mariah is a genius singer who creates artistically best songs with beautiful acrobatic/gymnastic voice which is nearly impossible to follow or imitate by other singers.
The only singer I heard recently who can imitate or near Mariah’s voice is Morissette Amon! Observer from California.

Well but she also could’ve added more truth especially when it comes to vocal nodules and also I don’t feel like she mentioned enough about how taxing Mariah Carey songs are just saying especially the first 5-6 years And many vocal coaches would agree that like those songs will take a toll over years in years when you start out singing like that when you’re young

You've put too much energy in this... we all know her voice's changed. Just enjoy the legend she is. Even 30 years later, she still manages to sing it differently, each and every time. Why ? Because she wrote it. Mariah is the best vocalist of all time.
