You become a weather geek, with radar and weather apps on your phone. You check the weather every day, and in your mind, you rate each day for its riding potential. Your life begins to be scheduled around weather events - gotta ride today and tomorrow - rain is coming on Thursday!

Sounds like a fair weather rider. Best advice I've heard, and I'm 72 and have been riding since I was 14, is if you own a motorcycle and pay attention to the weather. You'll never ride.

    • @JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures
      @JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures  Před 7 měsíci +1

@@leoschubich3424 I judge if it's going to be worth riding or not. If there's a little bit of rain, no big deal. But if there's severe weather moving in that day, it's not worth taking the risk.

The rain comment. 100% me. I was nervous as hell when I hit my first rainstorm. However like you said in the video wait 15 is very accurate. Oils and stuff on the road will wash off fairly quickly. Ok from my experience if your Girl or guy( I will be fair) is against you on a motorcycle. Be respectful of their fears but don't give up a part of you. If it causes a problem make a well thought out decision. And from my experience as a rider since I was 15 i have cried more over a wrecked motorcycle than a girl that just did not understand and left or was left. The right person will respect your hobbies and interests not rob you from them. Ask my Exs' . Better find a partner that has a bike too or it will be next to impossible for them to understand. God Bless and Stay safe! Dont just show up with a bike people. Talk about things first. It is worth the time if you both love each other.

    1) I wasn’t expecting how LOUD it is on a bike. Get some good earplugs!!
    2) I wasn’t expecting how much of a workout it felt like at first. After the first couple of longer rides, I was winded after 30 minutes.
    3) You are a part of a ‘club’ the second you ride. I got my first 2-wheels down before I got out of my neighborhood the first time I took my bike out. Most people are great and helpful.
    4) Getting the muscle memory down of clutch, throttle, counter steering, and brake control is easier than I thought it would - I am very uncoordinated at times; that said, slow speed maneuvering is a lot harder for me than riding at speed.
This arctic blast is pissing me off … I wanna ride!!

For all you noobs out there, Even though this guy seems to be pro Harley Davidson, most of what he said was spot on, but definitely exercise, more caution when it’s wet, even after it’s been raining for days and all the oils are long gone. cattleguards, manholes, and all kinds of other little things will get you. try to steer clear of standing water. motorcycles do hydroplane but if I could add one thing to this video, it’s would be whatever you do don’t fall into the Harley Davidson trap. So many people spend their whole life riding junk motorcycles to fit in and be cool, not knowing any better. Ride lots of bikes. The more bikes you ride the more you’ll know. Thank for that great Video.
I dunno if anybody else has already stated this but I think it is important that you start on bike with a relaxed and comfortable seating position which shouldn’t have to much power (I figure everything below 48hp works fine but I think it is even better to go for an smaller engine like a 125cc with 15hp).
I had to learn it the hard way and bought a Supersport R7 just after half a year of practice on a 125cc and then a Ninja 400. The R7 was way too sporty and uncomfortable for me at that time and I didn’t feel safe on it. And yes I dropped it nearly brand new 🙈
So I had to steep down to a MT03 with 45hp and much more comfortable seating position. And after another year of Practice everything works great even on the R7.
But to wrap it up I think it is always better to start for the first 1-2 years on a smaller bike and much more fun 🤩 🤙
Cheers to You and Everyone and always happy and safe rides 😎👍

I started riding because at 74 I couldn’t cross-train for 4 hours a day anymore, which is a natural high. Now, I only lift weights (I can lift for 2 hours without resting) and need three days of rest between workouts. Riding fills in that big gap and keeps me high as well.
Working out will keep you from getting the blues when you can’t ride for a while (I live in South Carolina and ride year-round), and exercising makes riding more enjoyable; in fact, it makes everything more enjoyable.
I wear cold-weather parka-liners under wind-breaker tops and bottoms in the winter, with a white, heavy cotton jumpsuit over that for visibility (I always wear a helmet with full body armor underneath everything). When it's in the 30s, I put a rain suit jacket over that which cuts wind penetration completely.
In the summer, I wet the jumpsuit down before rides, which acts like air conditioning.

4:19 shows the most common exception to the point made while showing it - SOME, not all, solid paint lines can be slick as snow when wet. If they're worn down enough like those appear you should be fine ignoring them, then one time you use medium braking on a fairly new line before the oils washed off it's a big surprise.
Best practice is to plan ahead so you don't turn, brake, or throttle too hard till you're on pavement.

I bought my first bagger 2yrs ago after riding for 17yrs on mainly a 79' KZ1000 ST. Never dropped the KZ, not once. Dropped the Vaquero 3x that first year. 900+lb bike is a bitch to pick up by yourself, and I'm former Armored Cav, working physical jobs all my life. Effectively had to re-learn how to ride as it's a totally different bike. It's great on the highway. Rode to work once years ago on a 79 GL1000 w/a Vetter fairing (my 2nd bike), no rain in the forecast. I work 3rd shift, started pouring at 4-5am. Rode home wearing a canary yellow Dupont disposable chemical suit over all of my clothes. Still have it. Worked great, I was bone dry after riding 12mi home on back roads.

1st time here. Interesting list. Thank you.
If it rains befor I go out I will probably use a different mode of transport. If it rains, whilst out riding, it's not so much an emotional problem for me but a practical/comfort matter. I wear pretty heavy duty gear with armour, but its the 4 wheeled (plus) road users that go about themselves as if it isnt raining that causes issues. That as well as poor road condition plus personal discomfort can be a drag. But we train so we can handle these conditions.

Why do so few motorcycle videos, including ones giving safety advice, fail to mention motocycle blindness? Here the point is Not that the cyclist is blind. It's all about cagers' Blindness to us riders. Well documented, is how although a car driver can see with physical vision, they too often do not Mentally see the rider and wind up cutting him off or worse, crashing into riders. I sincerely wish those with this video platform would educate themselves on this real issue and begin in ernest to discuss it. I've read 2 such articles and respectfully challenge y'all to speak Loud & Clear on this matter for the good of all us riders. It is more than about who is to blame. It is all about how we can help motorcycle riders be aware of the matter, so they can think ahead, before the untimely crash or fatality occurs. Especially important in the rain. In many towns/cities when they paint those arrows/words/lines on the road they'll throw eentsy tiny glass beads down on the wet paint. Makes it reflective at night. Also means the paint is literally covered with glass. So when it gets wet, well, snot on a doorknob. Worst thing about winter in the UK, is the sheer amount of salt that's thrown on the roads. This has several effects, like holding moisture to the road surface, so they NEVER dry out until rain has washed it away, and that can bee weeks sometimes, secondly, it holds all the grease, and diesel and mud too, making it really slippery, especially on traffic islands.
Thirdly, it rots the f**k out of your bike unless you hose off the bike after every ride, and sometimes it's difficult to be able to do that.
The best winter rides after after a period of heavy rain, and the sun comes out, and the roads are dry and clean and grippy....those days are the best at this time of the year 🙂

    Rain VS Traction:
    ONLY with QUALITY Tires.
I cheaped out with some ChemgShin tires back in the early 1990's. That junk rubber slipped out & I low-sided.
....luckily, I was gong "only" about 15mph at the time.
Next day, enjoyed a lengthy burnout session as retaliation & replaced it w/ a new (better) one.... Yokohama (?)

But the issue will be fixed and ready for the road next season and maybe we can get some miles in sir!

I am 6’6” and I remember dropping my newer road glide special. Wasn’t paying attention backing it onto the street from my drive way. Had flip flops on and shorts. Hit the right saddle bag on my work truck dumper and it just went on its side. I wasn’t expecting it. I burned my leg trying to stand it back up. It was resting on the engine guard and I didn’t want to let it go and was lucky that I was tall enough I was able to pull it back up. Wasn’t the best or safest thing I ever did. lol. Handle bars seem okay still, but inspect them often as that was a lot of weight I pulled up on them

Been riding a year and had my first fall the other day, the quickest route to work is through a country lane but I've been taking the long way round all week due to the rain we've had but it didn't rain friday so i thought I would chance it, took a blind bend only to be met with a huge wet mud pile, my bike just completely disappeared from under me, safe to say I won't be going that way for a while 😅
Ride safe everyone and my advice is take the safest route even if it takes longer, its not worth it 👍

For the addicting thing it's true. I just bought a Cruiser Benelli Motobi motorcycle and i don't know why but i always have the feeling that i need to be on the road.
That's pretty insane and i love it. It's relaxing and helping me to going through bad times.

I echo the sentiments about the Interstate. I avoided riding on the interstate for a few years after getting my bike. But I challenged myself to ride on a slow Sunday morning. Did I get lost? Yes but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Hey Joe, great video! I've been riding for 22 years and that list is full of solid reminders! Where at in Ohio are you? I'm from NE ohio outside of Cleveland in the medina area. I'll definitely have to check out that bucket site this year. The highway driving stats were quite surprising! Be safe out there.

Here's a couple of things. That I have learned thru out the years. Loud pipes will not save you. Assume that all drivers are idiots. look for eye contact at intersections. Be predictable in traffic and understand that cars have blind spots. Stay out of them. But I think hands download the most important thing to practice is. Not to get used to using your rear br, aks always stop with your front breaks. In an emergency situation, I've done it to. You instinctively slam on the rear break . It will not stop you!

    • @JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures
      @JoeGoeMotorcycleAdventures  Před 6 měsíci

All great tips. As far as using the rear brake, I'm a firm believer of using it to stop once you're under 10mph. It makes your stops much smoother. However, I am also a firm believer of practicing emergency braking to keep that muscle memory. I appreciate you watching and leaving your feedback!

Ha! I dropped my Goldwing on the maiden voyage (it had been delivered) just 1,000 feet from my garage! Gravel and incline required 4 of us to get it upright. Now I NEVER drop it! I have a sidecar just for my dog!
