  • Sit back, relax, and watch over 25 trolleys, interurbans, and electric locomotives pass by the station for review at the Illinois Railway Museum's 2013 Trolley Parade. This is a time elapsed version of the parade which lasted over 1 1/2 hours. You get all the action without the waiting, the crowd, and the heat. Thanks for watching The Steam Channel.

    I had no idea that the IRM had such a vast collection of electrics! Thank You!

      Sure, before they changed the name to Illinois Railway Museum, it was called Illinois Electric Railway Museum. They have at least 2 maybe 3 barns of just electric equipment. On days when they are running equipment, they are always running electric equipment.

    Lots of memorable shots. I lived near the CA&E route thru Oak Park as a kid in the 40s and 50s. It’d add a lot to the video if you could put a crawler at the bottom identifying the equipment, years in use, etc. as they roll by.

    I had no idea the IRM had NYC subway cars, and redbirds at that! It's nice to see subway and El cars getting a new lease on life, and some time in the spotlight. If you squint hard enough, the trolley poles disappear from sight. Great video!

    Since they're from before my time, I don't know much about trolleys. It seems amazing that these were all able to run on the same gauge track and the same voltage. If voltage was standardized, what was it?

    • @Poisson4147
      @Poisson4147 Před 9 lety

      Museums have to re-gauge any cars that don't fit, along with modifying power systems if needed. Some cars that used 3rd-rail pickups will have poles added - or occasionally restored, depending on prior mods. Carbodies themselves may be altered as well; e.g. some ex-P&W cars have been retrofitted with low-level doors because they were originally high-level only.

    • @bigfish4965
      @bigfish4965 Před 8 lety

      +Poisson Volant most of these had poles originally, with the exception of the CTA units, which ran with 3rd rail only, because they were elevated, and the Chicago Aurora and Elgin, which had poles and 3rd rail, which was rare for an interurban railway

    • @Poisson4147
      @Poisson4147 Před 8 lety

      +Jacob Fischer To explain, I was speaking generally about museum practices. There were a number of lines that used dual power pickups, and a lot of equipment like the CTA's has been retrofitted for museum operation. A few I'm familiar with:
      The Electroliners, of course, originally had shoes as well as poles because they accessed the Chicago "L". When the Red Arrow acquired them for the P&W the poles were removed because that line is 3rd-rail only, and after the Liners were retired their poles were once again restored.
      Lehigh Valley Transit also used both, as the cars operated over the P&W's tracks south of Norristown, PA. The P&W's cars had shoes only, but the survivors have been retrofitted with poles for museum use.
      In the Philadelphia suburbs PSTC's earliest cars had poles but included an option for shoes in anticipation of joint running on the Market Street Elevated. That service never materialized so later cars were pole-only.
      Pittsburgh's PAT didn't use 3rd rails, but some PCCs were equipped with pans instead of poles.
      SEPTA's N-5 cars are 3rd rail but have an option to add pans, although at this writing it looks like any expansion will also be 3rd rail.
      I'm sure there's a ton more !

    • @bigfish4965
      @bigfish4965 Před 8 lety

      +Poisson Volant ok, I was just saying I remember reading somewhere that the Chicago Aurora and Elgin was unusual because it ran with 3rd rail at ground level, which was dangerous, and it also had poles for sections of track without 3rd rail

    • @Poisson4147
      @Poisson4147 Před 8 lety

      +Jacob Fischer The ex-P&W (now SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line) is one of the last surviving quasi-interurban lines. It's about 13 miles, all ground level and third rail. Many other modern metro-type operations have also gone with third rails as well but AFAIK the P&W is the only trolley-type line still using that form of power collection.
      The P&W third rail is overrunning and in the old days had wood cover boards. There were some horrible accidents when people tried to cross the tracks (DUMB!) and stepped on the board (DUMBER!) at a weak spot. About 15 years ago the old boards were replaced with high-strength plastic and fiberglass covers which so far has eliminated any further accidents.

    Seems odd nobody is riding them. That's encouraged in museums over here. Perhaps they're afraid that all those corpulent fans might cause too much strain on the old motors?

    • @bigfish4965
      @bigfish4965 Před 8 lety

      Probably the high volume of trains running meant less people per train

      @dj197475 Před 7 lety +1

      LOL....It does seem to be a good day for the rotund, doesn't it? I know this post is 2 years old but let me just explain that they bring out every piece that's operable for the parade. AFTER the pageant they'll put everything back except the equipment that was designated for the day. On holidays such as this one they'll probably have several streetcars running on the loop and maybe two or three multiple unit electrics on the main line PLUS a steam train and a diesel train. Hope this makes it more clear for MarmiteCrumpets.
