The US doesnt get enough credit for this. Spain was the best team on the planet at this time.
Jesus Murillo and they qualified for that match in a group featuring Brazil and Italy
Jesus Murillo I know, many Europeans see USA as a really bad team, but they’re more average. Yeah they’re not a world class team, but they can definitely defeat most of concacaf and has a pretty solid record in concacaf since 2000. They’re more like South Korea, Japan, Ireland, Mexico, Peru, good. I don’t see Europeans making fun of them. For a country that doesn’t care much about football-soccer, they’re pretty good. Generally, countries that don’t care about the sport are REALLY bad (Philippines, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, etc)
@@bobmuller8256 lol Philippines dont care about futbol but basketball. Stop spreading lies
Isiah Arellano that’s what I said. What’s your point? That’s why they’re not good, but USA is descent, despite Americans not caring about football.
@Jesus Murillo This match was just luck. Futbol has this kind of results sometimes. It isn't basketball.
The mentality of the USMNT was different back then.... miss being proud of my team
its coming back my friend
Oh it has came back.
@@independent_bully_maguire9320 Back when the team had character and didn't crumble when faced with a modicum of adversity
Dempsey, Donovan, Howard, DeMerit, fought back regardless of adversary.
Over rated team, not even top 3 in concacaf.
This was back when the USMNT fought for every blade of grass and felt like they could beat anybody on any given day. Hopeless underdogs in any major tournament no doubt, but full of that scrappy confidence that you love to see. I miss that USMNT 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
That’s what it means to be an American soccer fan especially a fan from wayyy back. I fell in love when they tied with England in group stages and also beat Algeria. We’ve come so far...

Crazy how we went from this to being knocked out of World Cup Qualifiers by Trinidad and Tobago
Exactly. Trinidad and Tobago’s back up team at that.
Yeah but the players who beat Spain were 8 years older in 2017 and past their prime
don't knock t&t. they held sweden to a draw and troubled england plenty in the wc

Dempsey was playing out of his mind that day
So was Michael Bradley, but you didn’t see it here.
2002- 2014 were by far the best years of the US soccer team.
2006 was garbage but the rest I agree with. We could’ve probably made it to the semis in 2002 if it wasn’t for a trash referee.
The USA unintentionally revealed Spain's weaknesses in this game. Spain was using the tiki taka formation which US broke through. Luckily, the World didn't notice, or we would've had a different champion in 2010.
Wow phenomenal analysis not really lol
The US was just lucky on this one
It was pretty intentional
That would be a comment made by a Dutch person!
I agree.
Mexico is the USA best rival. Their style is similar to tiki-taka. Mexico is usually very technical on the ball and with passing.
So the USA is used to playing a patient defensive and counterattack strategy versus a team like that.
So I think thats why the USA were able to play so we'll vs Spain. It was a similar style to what they face constantly versus their biggest regional rival.
Obviously Spain was more successful than Mexico in the world cup. And their tiki-taka is better than Mexico's.
But the USA knew how to play against it perfectly and they pulled it off.
Some Day We Will Be World Champions
2006 USA Drew to Italy 1-1
2009 USA Beat Spain 2-0
2014 USA Lost to Germany 1-0
2018 USA Drew to France 1-1
It’s too much of a coincidence, that we’ve played teams before they became World Cup Champions.
please organize a friendly with Argentina this year XD

Donovan, Dempsey, Tim Howard represented the exact mentality needed to beat big teams. USMNT 2010-14 was special indeed.
Back when USA was good smh
Real talk >.< I'm still hurting that they aren't playing in the World Cup right now
Cody Cunningham I did expect that US would be stronger if they had qualified for 2018 for they did well on 2014.
Not good but cares that’s what made them win hames
Keep your head up, lad. The future is bright
Ok
This is probably the best USA team ever. The current team lacks leaders and experience. Hopefully team USA can get back to becoming a contender and challenge for a World Cup
I think our team in the early 2000s was better tbh. From 2001-2005 we were killing it.
@@anthonylong9067this match was the second greatest achievement of US national team history. The best since they beat England in the World Cup.
These were the days for US Soccer. Maybe not the most technically gifted, but they would outwork anybody and never backed down. The scrappy underdogs. They have really fallen a long way.
Still got the same opinion?
being scrappy can only get you so far.
Man, seriously, usa doesn’t not get enough credit for this match.

René Ahumada, Spain won World Cup 2010! 😁 So not really!
René Ahumada, Plus on top of that Europe still dominates football. The last 4 World Cups evidently proves that.

Agreed - love it when African, American, and Asian teams beat our old European masters.
Team USA is on its way to being this amazing!!
This happened like a decade ago...
They beat the best Spain 🇪🇸 team there ever was, it was the same one that won the World Cup the following year.
If only the US could've held on and won the gold at this tournament. It could have shifted the paradigm. But I remember watching this Confederations cup and it's what made me become a fan of our national team. So I would argue that all of the strides the USMNT have made started at this tournament.
I love how everyone cheers for the USA in football 😃 even up here in Canada we all were going hard for the US 😂🤣
Now with Alphonso Davies tho we might have a genuine US-Canada football rivalry though. I'm excited for that.

The best win in the USMNT history
The best win was against Portugal in the World Cup!
The reigning Concacaf Gold Cup champions USA defeated the defending UEFA European champions Spain in the Semifinals of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup
On June 24, 2009 - The USA shocked the football world with a 2-0 win against the kings of European giant Spain when Jozy Altidore gave U.S. MNT a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute, before Clint Dempsey added a second and game-winning goal in the 74th minute. Tim Howard (who won the Golden Glove of the tournament) made 8 shutouts to keep a clean sheet, as the USA ended La Furia Roja's 35-game undefeated streak and clinched it's first-ever berth in the FIFA Men's Final
Will see the both Concacaf giants Mexico and USA clinched their first-ever berth in the FIFA World Cup Final at Qatar 2022 or on their North America soil in 2026

I know it was "just" the Confederations Cup but this isn't talked enough about in terms of the biggest shocks of all-time. Spain were already on the level we'd see during the next 5 years.
amazing tournament that was
This was still during Del Bosque´s first year as national coach. He tried to change the tiki-taka style implemented the 2 years before that with such great success by Luis Aragones, winning Euro 2008. Wanted wingers and double holding central midfileders. It didnt work (obviously), The more senior players there gradually talked him out of it. We in Spain thought he was gonna bottle it tbh. In fact, Spain's greatest football ever played was in Euro 2008.
I hope one day to see USA win the World Cup.
They will win it in 3006
Que bueno que era Donovan, lastimosamente nunca se pudo adaptar al fútbol europeo, sino hubiese sido recordado ampliamente por el mundo del fútbol

Brazil came back but required a 2 handed push (foul) from Kaká to equalize from what I remember
From what I remember, the same Kaká scored a goal (the ball got entirely past the line) but the ref didn't give it.
