Despite the controversy of replacing Roth, the album was their first to top the Billboard 200. It was also Hagar's first #1, as stated by him on the Live Without a Net concert video. The album went to number one on April 26, 1986 and 2x Multi-Platinum on May 28, 1986.
A live video created during the tour for this album was released as Live Without a Net, which has since been released on DVD. The tour was a significant change from previous tours. Where Van Halen previously had years of material to work with, even on tour supporting the first album, Hagar was uncomfortable performing a large number of songs from the original lineup. Therefore, most of the band's back catalog was dropped from the set lists. Instead, the shows consisted of almost the entire 5150 album, a few Hagar solo hits ("I Can't Drive 55" and "There's Only One Way to Rock"), and a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll"; the band also played a humorous verse of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" as part of "Best of Both Worlds." Of the Roth-era tracks, "You Really Got Me", "Panama", and "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" were performed with regularity. Unlike Roth, Hagar was an established guitarist, allowing Eddie to play keyboards on some songs. - Zábava
The world NEEDS Live Without a Net in 4K!!!
It was shot on film, they could easily re-scan it to 4K or 8K.
@@rossland7097 💯 what are chances they shot it on film? 50/50? I know TV shows around that time like Family Ties shot on video tape 😭
@@volt8ge Live without a net was shot on film. It's on 16mm film. Two songs (Love Walks In and Best of Both Worlds) were broadcast live to the MTV awards on one of the 2 nights of filming, that was on video and looks like video. The VHS and DVD are from the 16mm film prints.
@@rossland7097 Ah, if only I had access to that print lol
The world and …me:)
Michael Anthony harmonizing with Sammy, amazing
Michaels harmonies were Van Halens secret ingredient!
And still doing it.
He's the best in the biz with that platinum voice of his..
My 18 year old self was at this concert. My 56 year old self remembers it like it was yesterday. Good times.
I was 15 at the time --- I woulda been high-fiving you during this concert
This concert is one of those “If you could go back in time and play through one particular guitar rig” kind of thing for me. I’d wanna play his guitar pumping through that PA in that arena just to know how loud it was and how much air that moved. What a tone!
Van Halen rocked the TEXXAS Jam that year! 🤘
🙌🏼
Where this concert was recorded?
this riff is hard enough to play, yet Eddie does it while jumping, spinning, not looking at the fretboard....greatness and joy constantly evidenced in his playing
No shit!! This entire album is hard to play...and I've been playing for 32+ years. Impossible to play a lot of those songs without a transtrem, so there's that excuse...I don't have a Steinberger!!
Cause he’s the shit
It's a difficult riff to play cleanly. But it's also a lot easier to play your own material, not someone else's. If that makes sense.
@@AchillesWrath1 absolutely
What's really incredible is how Eddie creates such a full band sound when playing rhythm, essentially on his own. Hard to believe it's just that guitar, a bass, and drums. And so damn clean. Even live. That's his true gift, imo.
Why was Eddie the best rock guitarist? When you watch this video, if you are a fan of rock, I challenge your jaw not to drop to the floor in awe. Great composer. Great performer. Great riffs. Great energy. Great connection with the rest of the band. Looks like he is in heaven playing that guitar. He was truly the guy that every guitar player wishes they could even be half of.
Three times Eddie looked back to his brother Alex for timing and the "wink." This cannot be duplicated by anyone else.
I’ve never seen Eddie happier than during this performance!! ❤️❤️❤️
i played this so much on vhs when it came out i had to buy a 2nd copy.
So did i😂😂
Same
Before I wore mine out, went to the local video store and rented it for as long as I could. Then talked my parents into renting it again, and again... Finally saved the money to purchase it!
Yep, wore out two VHS copies.
I watched this concert video more than porn VHS back then
Back when life and the world was simply better, because this was the music we had ☺️. RIP Eddie 😔
Скорее наоборот. Музыка была качественней и добрее, от того, что времена были лучше
@@user-vj7hy1jn4fYet Russia was still being aholes back then. Some things never change.
Тогда не было России)). Был СССР.
Для того, чтоб судить о России, нужно как минимум проживать в этой стране.
@@user-vj7hy1jn4flove Russia. Made a visit a few years ago and the people were loving and fun. Don’t listen to internet turds 😂
watching these are like collecting the infinty stones
I wish I could travel back in time to New Haven 1986.
Went to this tour …epic!!
I seen them in San Diego with my Girlfriend Stacey and we hung out at Ocean Beach after that. One of my best Summers ever..
Oooh, me, too.
I hated 86 at the time. Full of Bon Jovi Europe Mr. Mister and Whitney Houston CRAP.
If I could pull a Ground Hog day .. I would choose this day and spend infinity as a 13 year old in the Midwest figuring out how to get to this concert!
It's like we're all watching it for the first time. . .
AMAZING work!
Eddie truly was the king of guitar. Miss the man.
That delay sequence at the beginning of Ed’s solo. 😍
Best live solo Ed ever did imo
From vinyl in the late 80s to 4k today ... feels like no time. This song describes everything I love about (live) music 🤍
That is not 4k...and it was released on VHS and DVD....it was shot on 16mm film. I still have the DVD.
Man they were such a tight band.. just magical!
Takes me back, too a simpler time 🥲💖🤙🏼
THIS was my youth. 💔
Glad im a part of this generation. 🎉
After the thousands of times I've watched this concert, SO good to see it in Hi-DEF!
And the sound is superb 👌
I’d like everyone to know Sammy was pushing 40 when this was filmed. Almost 40 years later and he’s barely aged.
lol lol lol lol! 40 is old?
Dave is still better ..... way better
@@JoeZaccaris He was a great frontman, but Sammy was (and is ) BY FAR the better singer
@@svedishmafia no way that Sammy could pull off the insane screams in "Running With the Devil" like Dave can --- Roth was just superior to Sam in so many ways
Sam has aged noticeably.
Man oh man.....doesn't get any better than this. My mom worked a lot so we had a sitter watching over my brothers and me. She gave me 5150 on cassette for Xmas. To say it was life changing would be a complete understatement. The power, virtuosity, vocal harmony, and just plain fun.....
When I was a kid, I wore this vcr tape out!
I remember this VHS had stereo encoding. Sounded really great on a VCR that could output stereo channels.
It's 2024 and there is still only one EVH. Rest in power, Eddie!
They all looked like they were having a blast!!!!!
I remember being so pissed off that VH had split up. Left us high and dry and I was very reluctant about Sammy coming in and the big change. I bought the album and loved the music. But it took 2 albums to accept the fact that’s what it was. But Sammy came in and did a helluva job and this live performance had alit to do with winning me over. Great times RIP Edward!
Thanks for doing this. Still my #1 favourite VH song of all time. I really felt the 5150 tour was their pinnacle of musicianship, inspired performances and overall musical maturity. This particular song has compositions within compositions.
5150 is a materpiece record,. I hate those silly discussions Dave x Sammy, both eras were great.
Stunning amount of energy.
Eddie was on fire on this song!! He was 5150!!!!!! RIP Mr. EVH, gone but never ever forgotten!!
Please don't call him Mr. EVH --- his name was "King of Six Strings"
incredible to play and dancing as that !!!!!!!!! never forget my first heroe !!!
The BEST OF VAN HALEN ,VAN HAGGAR
This tour was awesome 🤘!!
Hell yeah it was!
I was 14 when I bought this VHS in 1988. My parents didn't approve of the rock 'n roll behavior in it, but I didn't care. 35 years later, Rev. Al is still my favorite drummer, and I play in band that covers several VH songs. Awesome video.
Such a great performance
The energy, the joy, is as infectious as it is stunning. Like I'm a Van Halen fan, I like all the eras of the band. But this one, especially this tour, was just such unbridled joy permeating every millimeter of the stage and screen
Joyous, just joyous, this song never fails to bring a big cheesey grin to my face. Looks great too...
Grew up as a teen in the 80’s loved Van Halen since the 80’s miss Eddie so much!
Saw them in Philly for that tour. Only time I ever saw them. Great show. Great energy. They were having so much fun.
THIS NEVER EVER GETS OLD. I LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY TIME I SEE THIS LIKE A GREAT BOOK.
I always get excited when Eddie solo is about to start man just like seeing it for the first time I'm now 50 years old but it reminds me back when I was just 13 watching this awesome man Eddie forever
Got a good cry in. Best solo ever. Thanks much for the upload.
I remember buying this concert on VHS in 1988 --- but I never had quality like this on my old CRT TV !!
Lol the old CRT TVs were 480i resolution but we all thought it was great 😃
@@CrosscutFilmsSask Well, depending on the TV and the seating distance a flat screen CRT TV had/has a great picture. I just sold one of the best 32" flat screen CRTs ever made...A Toshiba 32AF43 and replaced it with a cheap Insignia 32" LED. The Toshiba had a better picture from 4 feet away. Gotta trash it and get something better. BTW, the first HDTVs were CRTs.
Saw this tour from the 2nd row in Pullman, WA. Still my favorite show of all time. SO much energy.
Thank you for scaling it to 4K. The solo in this song is my all-time favorite by EVH and it's still hard for me to comprehend that a human being could creatively come up with that solo never mind actually play it. EVH was so incredibly talented that it boggles the mind. Thank you EVH for sharing your music with the world and may you rest in peace.
Always hilarious seeing Sammy bust out a wide grin after he sees someone has thrown a David Lee Roth shirt onstage.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!! Can't thank you enough! 🤘😎🤘
wow, it was so much fun to go to a concert back in the late 1900s. we didn't have all the entertainment options we have today and it was just a pure heart racing thrill to see something like Van Halen live!
This is Van Hagar and its most fun. I wish I could've been around for this. I saw them in 2007. It was great, but not the same as this. Long Live The King!
DUDE!!! RE RELEASE this video... I want to watch this in high def on amazing speakers on a sick Theather SCREEN!.
Yep a 4K release would be Great
Ed was the entire package.
The brilliance of Ed at 5:45..
That 6 chord pattern back into the opening riff.
After the double stops he could have gone right back into the opening riff, but no, he throws that little ditty in there and it's fucking genius.
Writing, skill, tone, phrasing, sense timing, etc, Ed was the entire package.
There'll never be another like him..
They sounded so good live!
This looks fantastic! Thank you so much for this... I would totally purchase this again if released in 4K.
What an amazing time they are having. Best song on the 5150 album.
Finally Fantastic video quality and sound that this incredible song deserves. Amen brother and RIP EVH.
They were a well oiled machine of devastation during this time. The sleeper on this concert for me, as a guitarist, is Ed’s solo on summer nights. He got into a zone and went off.
Stoked and blessed to be able to say I’ve seen VH live three times. Once with Roth and twice with Sammy. 👍👍🔥🔥🤘🏿🤘🏿
Amazing amazing amazing!!!!!!! So crisp. They are so happy
One of their best live tunes! Killing it!
Michale Anthony is Van Halen’s sound! His background vocals are it
Recorded (VHS tape) this off MTV when I was kid
Amazing VH performance ❤🤘👍!!
This track is an easy favorite of mine. 5150 as a whole was a great opening Salvo to the Hagar era VH.
💯 percent!
Thanks Eddie and Van Halen for the music!💜 🎸
F-ing Iconic!
This needs to be released in 4K. PLEASE !!!!
This is fantastic! Like so many others, I wore that VHS out! Looking forward to more. Thank you!!
Can anyone else see the sparks with all of them. I know everyone has their own opinion. But Sammy made them special. Can’t tell you how better they look with him. Van Hagar was always my fave. The electricity in the air and on the stage is just so impressive.
Totally agree! What great times!!
Thanks for uploading this. Love it!
Beautiful! I saw them live on this tour in Pullman, WA, BTO opened, excellent show!
What a performance. what a work out.
This was a great tout. I saw them in Phoenix. I watched this VHS video with my buddy probably 200 times.
Nice!! Thanks, and keep 'em coming!!
I got this all on a playlist for myself. Until this ever comes out officially. :p
this is official while Lee Roth is still connected.
They put in work
the impromptu solo he does at 3:30-4:21 is still one of my favorite things he's ever done.
My first rock concert was this tour and I was 15. This is excellent footage - a rarity it seems in the VH World. Eddie is on top of his game and his rig sounds soo excellent!
Thank you! One of their most underrated songs and I think EVH's best live solo. This looks and sounds great.
Wow this looks and sounds amazing thank you!
watched live without a net some many times and you just blew it away
I’m much more of a Dave guy but this songb is awesome
Man this looks great! I wore out my VHS copy in the late 80's.
Wow, this is a seriously high quality upscale! Thanks for this!
If you see this comment, we need a super scaled version of Ed’s live solo of donnington 84 and the Oakland 81’ pro shots.
Coffee purchased, great job with these vids man, thank you!
Thank you - much appreciated!!
This makes me feel happy
And sad at the same time.
Love VH❤
So much Eddie/Alex nonverbal communication in this song. Eddie turning to Alex several times for the transitions, mouthing 1-2-3-4 at 4:20, and the coolest is the shot around 7:00. Just freakin' locked in.
I was stationed in Subic Bay at the time and 5150 will always be the fershizzle to me and shout out to all my fellow vets who were there
Rad! Anytime I see EVH rip it live I'm always amazed with how he has total control over such a hot guitar rig.
They did two shows after this one (New Haven, Connecticut) at the Worcester Centrum in Massachusetts. I was at one of them. The only difference was Edward was wearing the same pants but they were turquoise. And his solo on this, has always been a personal favorite.
Imagine having the 1984 tour like this !
That intro went so hard…🤘🏽
Cool! Thanks for posting
Love watching these without all the 80's blur. Thank you for this. How can you no miss the 80's after watching this?
Great upscale job and good audio. More please!
This had to have been one of Ed's favorite songs because he used 5150 on a lot of his gear afterward and essentially turned it into a brand. And rightfully so it's a kick ass tune
GREAT QUALITY !!! NOSTALGIA !!!
Excellent!! 😎👍
Sorry to everyone that missed the 1980's, it was AMAZING!
Van Helen rocks!
Only One Van Halen...so glad I live the same era of this genius...!
wow...solo is AMAZING as always...RIP Sir EVH
Classic. Love it. My favourite version of VH.
Doing the Lords work! Thank you!
