It's amazing how wrestling has become accepted in mainstream sports publications and networks and permeated itself into our culture, but simultaneously has never been less popular.
Except to anybody from the real world of business, it's not remotely amazing at all. Business measures success by the dollars generated from customers, not the number of customers themselves. It's very simple: Would you rather have 5000 customers that give you $1 or 5 customers that give you $1000? That's a rhetorical question. WWE finally learned this lesson shortly after the turn of the century and became a mainstream business/entertainment success...AEW/TNT is just swimming in their wake.
Wrestling fans understandably don't like this...so they bend reality to match their displeasure.

SI used to be read by tens of millions and making it in was kind of a big deal. I honestly don't remember the last time I've seen an issue but I would wager they have well under a million subscribers in 2021.
Most things that make it to the mainstream do so because they aren't cool anymore.
I think people who are less technologically savvy like Cornette put way too much emphasis on television ratings. TV ratings do not mean anything anymore. Very few people are watching anything live on TV anymore. Nobody in the key demographics anyway.
Randy Orton deserved to be on this list he's been ever present all year
He deserves to be there regardless. Reigns has not been there all year either
Orton was good in PPV matches but he was booked like a Scooby-Doo villain on RAW. Drew and Roman were the only credible main roster stars in 2020. Everybody else looked like goofs with their dicks in their hands
yep, i dunno anything about NJPW so i can say anything there. But he definitely deserves to be there at least instead of Io Shirai or Kenny Omega. Also Jericho should be in it somewhere also probably Cody instead of Kingston...

Tough list to beat. But I feel like Jelly Nutella, Stunted Growth, and Stone Cold Cosplay deserve mention.
It's bad when I remember these names for the wrestlers rather than the actual wrestling names. But don't forget Dwarf Dong Sucker, Fuck Taylor/Invisible Hand Grenade Guy, Dino Douche, the CrapJelly team, and Big Swole (unfortunately she's so bad that they don't have another name for her). Also I think the fiend is now Crispy Critter from Canyon Creek.

This gets thrown around a lot and it's ALWAYS when someone is playing heel. When someone can get this praise while playing a face, then I'll be impressed. Getting people to hate you is a lot easier then getting people to love you.

As an "essential" worker who questions his own designation as such, if they have problem they can blow me. WWE's essential status is one of those things I can look at and feel a little better about.

When Sasha was feuding with Bayley in NXT, I had her in my top 10, maybe top 5. The best thing Sasha did in 2020 was appearing in The Mandalorian.

Roman Reigns last few months has just been amazing as hell. His heel work is absolutely brilliant.

I agree with you. In my opinion it’s the best work rate company in the world. Also considering how most of the time is spent just talking. Sometimes every match on Raw is equal to like 45 minutes if that on a 3 hour show. At this point, I just want to see wrestling.

It's debatable but SmackDown was still doing horrible when Sasha was there, Roman's return sparked interested in the product whether you like it or not,ever since his return Roman is putting on classic matches,mind you Roman's match drew 4.5 million on Christmas Eve while Sasha's did 3.16, merchandises sales and views also matters,nobody including Jim was talking about WWE that much until Roman returned,Roman should have been number 1 and I don't want the excuse of he wasn't there for 4 months when Natio Kota did jackshit /pretty much nothing most of the year

Sasha has been more consistent the entire year.
It's such a stupid idea to have a "Top 10 of the year" list over every promotion in the world. Every company and every show has it's own approach, puts across a different product, and I'm pretty certain that nobody watches every last promotion with such vigor that they could even begin to suggest a ranked list of 10 (out of literally hundreds) wrestlers, over the course of a whole year.
This tells you the mindset of those who are still watching wrestling. It puts on full display how out of touch with the mainstream the remaining fans are.
Also tells you why good bookers ignored this type of fan for as long as possible when making decisions
I show my lapsed fan brother stuff ocasionally. Last thing he liked was Eddie Kingston's promos going into the Moxley match. Kingston single handedly sold me on that show and I ended up regretting getting it. It was a 6/10 show and way too long.

He had some of the best tag matches of the year, was part of one of the best storylines this year and has put on some really good singles matches on aew and aaa

On top of that, other than omega and ibushi, who else from that group of wrestlers have really wrestled outside of that new japan bubble. Tana, okada and naito havent really, so how exactly are you determining who's carrying who? If the roles were reversed youd prove ly be saying it was omega who carried okada. If omega was a lesser wrestler than whoever he was in the ring with his njpw run wouldbt have been met with such acclaim.
In talking about the storyline leading up to Kennys heel turn and becoming champion, the decsension between him and hangman, the return of the cleaner...

While Drew and Roman are doing better work right now Drew's booking has been inconsistent and Roman was out for a while so I understand why Sasha's ahead of them. She's been their most consistent worker this year (though I probably wouldn't put her on the top of the list)
In all honesty besides the order the list would be pretty accurate had they not left off Randy. I think MJF should have been on there too he had a hell of a year.

Pop culture wise Sasha did have possibly the greatest year considering her landing a reoccurring role in Disney's mandalorian series. First we feast' hot ones appearance also showed that she carries herself with the confidence, wit, and charisma to have that crossover appeal that is so desired of a WWE talent to establish their stardom outside of the company... Or wrestling bubble for that matter.
That doesnt mean shit. She shouldnt be in any list shes boring and did nothing this year. Show me a good promo from her this year? The overrrated sasha/bayley match sucked. She needs to retire along with nia jax and natalya. Bayley can stay cuz shes not as cringe and overrated. But shes on thin ice with me too. Not really. I love both and I'm glad that Drew has had a run, but Sasha has done more than Drew and I would say had a better year overall.
Yeah, Drew had the world title, probably made good money and had a couple quite good matches, Lashley and Dolph in particular I found very good, but what of his actual run do you remember and what of it, aside from his initial win, will you remember long term? It hasn't been an especially exciting run. And he lost the belt too. Got it right back, but that still dings his year.
Sasha on the other hand has actually managed to be booked pretty solidly and consistently this year, at the very least by WWE's standards. Plus, not that it was an all-time great feud, but I'll remember her feud with Bayley at least somewhat. It was generally good and relatively memorable because they actually built to it all year.
More than can be said for pretty much any of Drew's 1 or 2 matches then onto the next guy, by the numbers WWE style feuds.
I don't say this to blame Drew, I blame creative for running him through the same tired formula everyone who wins the WWE title goes through. Sasha's run has been a little less formulaic and the story has been told better I think. So if you're gonna put em up next to each other, I say Sasha edges Drew out on that.
I love a lot of the wwe womens wrestlers. They bust their asses and can work. The same cant be said for aew womens division. Very few can work besides britt baker and some others.
Cody Rhodes -should have been on the list -Dog collar match, Wardlow match, Brodie Lee and Darby Allin title matches
Shida - title matches against a beast , Dr Britt Baker matches getting over with no promo and mic skills

Kenny Omega had a terrible year. And Cody even if I don't like him, I'm gonna give it to him, he brought it weekly this year. He is WAY ahead of Omega.

Kenny won the tag team championship, he had the most wins in AEW 2020, he had match of the year and he dethroned the undefeated AEW champion and became the face of the company. Come on man, you may not like him, but that's no where near terrible

Kenny should have been the #1 wrestler of the year IMO. He had the best TV match of the year with PAC, the best tag team match of all time, the best cinematic match of all-time, and since the heel turn he’s been the best character and the best promo in the business as well. I wasn’t really a fan of his going into the year and now he’s my favorite wrestler on the basis of his amazing 2020.
Up until he lost the TNT Title and started promoting his shitty talent show Cody was having the best year of anybody in pro wrestling.
They put Moxley, the worst member of the Shield and the most sleeper world champion above Roman Reigns, who returned after 7 months and immediately established why he’s “the guy” and going on to have a match of the year candidate.

Omega is AAA mega champion in Mexico and was aew tag champ with Adam Page. He deserved his spot
Sasha deserves it. She w/Bayley carried the company until Roman got back. She reached another level of superstardom by the years end with her role in the Mandalorian. No star had more eyes on them/people talking about them in/outside the industry then she did the last few months.
Bayley should be rated higher.
Mox headlined for a secondary company while sasha, bayley, drew headlined for the largest company in the world. You can be an equal skilled athlete, but if you play for the Yankees it means more than the Marlins.
Roman Reigns 9th?!! 😂 Despite missing half the year, his closing four months alone were the best anyone had in 2020, only Moxley was close.

I'm so sick of Jim disrespecting Sasha Banks. He goes out of his way to tell us how Rhea SHOULD be an action movie star when Sasha actually IS. She's in The Mandalorian with a prominent role in season 2 as Koska Reeves. Even without that, she was still by far the biggest star in wrestling in 2020. She constantly had the highest rated segments across RAW, NXT, and Smackdown. She had the best assortment of matches in WWE. She also won all 3 main roster women's championships and had two successful defenses against Bayley and Carmella. This shouldn't be surprising to anyone who's been paying attention.

Aew pushes? Only Darby was the only one with more of a proper build up, everyone else’s was pretty rushed and underwhelming title wins like Bucks, Omega and even god rest his soul Brodie, who were all just pushed overnight

The way cody was offering challenges he bit off more than he could chew which is why it made sense for brodie to destroy him. Bucks I agree with, the should've gave ftr a longer run

That like saying that just because someone loses to someone and never interacts with them once again that’s a build. Omega wasn’t build at all throughout a year, they just say that because aew fans complained about Omegas booking and not being in the title picture. So what if Brodie had a feud with Mox, he was just put in that position after two matches in Aew against job guys. Plus the rankings were completely ignored for those two. Rankings are and were useless from the start. Everyone challenges regardless of where that stand ranked
