Super Punch-Out!! (Arcade) - High Score [364,380 points]

- I know I technically got 384,810 points, but that was on my rematch coin, so I didn't count it for this video.
Arcade Super Punch Out is outrageously more difficult than its predecessor. By the time you get to loop 3, it is literally impossible to react to just about every attack that an opponent can throw at you (at least with MAME input lag).
This video marked the first time that I've ever beaten Super Macho Man 3, so I figured I'd upload that part of this run too. Also LOL at Bear Hugger 3 KO'ing me in 2 seconds with an impossible to react to OHKO bear hug :|
This was played on MAME, since I don't have a working arcade board and capture setup. The dip switches were all switched off except for the one that has demo music, meaning this was on "Easy" difficulty with the "Longest" timer.
Fun fact did you know Dragon Chan was the first opponent designed for this game and for the original punch-out arcade bald bull was first opponent designed. This means bald bull was the first character for punch-out made hence why he's in pretty much every punch-out game.
And also why get the most simple boxer aside from sandman
He was also "MASK" in a wrestling game, and his identity is revealed if you beat him.
bald bull comes out in 5 games
little mac comes out in 3
simply brutal
I read in a book that bear hugger was made first
Is the 3 knockdown rule in effect in all versions of Punch-out,even the Super versions?
Apparently after the first Punch-Out, Nintendo wised up to the fact that more and more players were able to beat the hardest challenge and could go on for literally hours (or at least make the machine completely unprofitable), so they had to set the bar REALLY high. That last "fight", in particular, was telling. It looked like something out of a cartoon. Three seconds, bam, 10-count, game over. It was as if the game was saying "Enough already!"
Ah, nice. Didn't know that this particular unwinnable fight with Bear Hugger also doubled as a kill screen of sorts.
@@derthevaporeon It's not an unwinnable fight. Bear Hugger 3 is very easy to beat once you know that he's going to do his "OHKO bear hug" move right off the bat. Zallard says in his description that it's "impossible to react to," which may be [mostly] true if you're merely reacting without the benefit of knowing what he's going to do. The first time I ever got to Bear Hugger 3 when I was a kid in the late '80s, he KO'd me with that move too. He's never KO'd me since then though, unless I was day dreaming at the start of the round. I'm willing to bet he never KO'd Zallard again either, after the one time shown in this video. Bear Hugger 3+ is by far the easiest opponent of the later loops.
There's no known kill screen in this game nor in its predecessor, Punch-Out.
@@MaximRecoil Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.
Once you learned how these guys moved, the game was too easy

Still waiting for Punch Out All Stars: The Rise of Glass Joe.
I always dreamt of a Punch Out game where Glass Joe was the final boss. At the end when you face him, you give him an uppercut and his head flies off. Turns out he was an android and the real Glass Joe was cheating
@@Djclyve That's.... actually genius. Unfortunately I just feel like Glass Joe is too cool of a dude to cheat.
I know
There are several ways you could make this plot work. Perhaps Joe already retired and the robot is under the control of some new, villainous figure. The real Joe knows nothing about it and is shocked when hundreds of reporters burst into his little Parisian apartment asking for comment after the fact, Bald Bull style. Bonus points if he's doing something wholesome and a bit silly like playing checkers against Gabby Jay at the time.

LOL yeah, that was the first time I've ever seen Bear Hugger 3. I actually expected to see Dragon Chan 4, so that was a pretty big surprise too. 3rd Dragon is still a big problem in MAME for me. Mac will always be an up and coming boxer.
There is no "Mac" in this game. The "Little Mac" character was invented for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (which came out about 3 or 4 years after the original arcade games) because they had to make the playable character's sprite tiny (making him look like he's a 2' tall, 15-pound midget) so that the opponent could be clearly seen. The NES hardware wasn't even close to being powerful enough to duplicate the see-through wire-frame playable character from the two arcade games.
The playable character in arcade PO/SPO has no name other than your own initials that you input at the start of the game, and is a normal-size adult.

Vodka Drunkenski, Soda Popinski.
From U.S.S.R. From Moscow Russia.
Well to be fair, Soda Popinski’s hone country in Mike Tyson’s Punch Out is still stated as USSR
If you time the opponent's "power move"(when they go into motion to throw their super punch) and throw a jab, you'll automatically deck them.....
As far as I know, Super Macho Man doesn't have any instant knockdown weaknesses like Great Tiger does, even during his wind ups for spin punches.
I got made fun of a few years ago for thinking Bear Hugger was a black guy.
That's because his sprite is colored as a black guy in his original appearance (arcade Super Punch-Out). If they wanted him to be a white guy why didn't the give him the same skin color as Glass Joe, Pizza Pasta, Dragon Chan, Vodka Drunkenski, or the playable character? I always thought of him as a black guy too until the SNES version of SPO came out.
The most racist Game ever

How to Dragon Chan. *RIGHT, BODYBLOW, RIGHT, BODYBLOW, RIGHT, BODYBLOW.*
This is actually more of a direct sequel to the Punch Out arcade game with very similar graphics and sound. Ironically, the SNES Super Punch Out is more advanced from a technical perspective, but it's cool they ported the arcade games (yes both as of now 2020) finally to Switch!
"'More' of a direct sequel"? Who said it was anything less than a direct sequel? It is definitely a direct sequel to Punch-Out, since it came out in the same year (1984) and uses the same hardware (a Super Punch-Out boardset is just a Punch-Out boardset with some, but not all, of the ROMs being different. The sound isn't just similar, it's identical, since both PO and SPO use the same sound ROM. The graphics style is identical, with many the graphical elements being 100% identical. Even one of the SPO opponents is a palette swap of a PO opponent (Great Tiger = Piston Hurricane = Pizza Pasta). They didn't even do a full head swap when compared to Piston Hurricane, i.e., his face is the same; they just extended his mustache slightly and added a turban.
"Ironically, the SNES Super Punch Out is more advanced from a technical perspective"
The arcade PO/SPO PCBs have a copyright date of 1983 on them. SNES SPO was released in 1994 on hardware released in 1990, so it makes sense that it was more advanced. But for its time, Punch-Out was probably the most advanced video game (in terms of graphics) in existence. Just look at the huge sprites, the sprite scaling/zoom effect, and the see-through wire frame playable character. It also had very impressive speech synthesis for the time, which sounds more or less like natural speech from a real human. And it wasn't just playing a few speech samples every now and then like in Sinistar, it was announcing every punch ("left," "right," "body blow," etc.) in real time according to what was going on in the game.
"but it's cool they ported the arcade games (yes both as of now 2020) finally to Switch!"
Those are emulated, not ported. It's doing the same thing that MAME does.
Why wouldn't SNES Punch-Out be way more advanced than the arcade version nearly ten years later? 😅
Vodka Drunkenski got a PG-rated makeover as Soda Popinski for the console versions, I see.

9:45 Super Macho Man took 5 of those knock out swings at you.
I was wondering if this is a mame issue, but when switching between the two arcade punch-out games, do you notice a big difference in how quickly your punches come out between the two? It really throws off my counter punch timing for the first match since there's a big difference for me.
Yeah, SPO seems to be way faster paced in general. Your punches are a lot faster and come out quicker than in PO. I've videos of people playing on cabinets and SPO also seems to be faster than PO, so I'm doubtful that's a MAME inaccuracy.
Nice pearl pfp there 5 years old comment...
Dragon _CHAAAAAAAAAAAN_
Regular Punch Out had 6 opponents, super punch out had only 5
Even though the arcade version doesn't have many characters however still a fun game. One good thing when u beat the champion you turn red and yellow and you become champion and there gloves change colors pretty cool.
@@michaelstroman6759 I'm talking about each arcade version. Also super punch out came out in the mid 80s and appears to be loosely based on WWF wrestlers. Hillbilly Jim, Ricky Steamboat, Nikolai Volkoff and Hulk Hogan.
So at the start you're doing the blue gloves until you beat the champion ?
SPO has more basic opponent sprites though: 4 vs. 3. Of the 5 opponents, only Vodka Drunkenski and Super Macho Man are palette/head swaps. Great Tiger is a palette/head swap of Piston Hurricane / Pizza Pasta from PO, but he doesn't have a double in SPO.
In PO the sprites are:
Glass Joe / Kid Quick
Piston Hurricane / Pizza Pasta
Bald Bull / Mr. Sandman
In SPO the sprites are:
Bear Hugger
Dragon Chan
Vodka Drunkenski / Super Macho Man
Great Tiger
In both games you eventually get down to four remaining opponents that you face over and over indefinitely. In PO Kid Quick and Pizza Pasta are eliminated from the lineup and in SPO Great Tiger is eliminated from the lineup.
I suspect that the reason there are only 5 opponents instead of 6 is because they wanted more unique opponents, plus, Bear Hugger is huge, probably taking up the same memory space as two normal sized opponents like Dragon Chan or Great Tiger.
