Wouldn't hurt to add that Bruce saw one big bat that scared him underground at the age of 8. Implicitly, it's that same bat that breaks his window when he's deciding on his superhero theme.
So I'd stress no phobia. He's been scared by one or two bats in his whole life.
And Lucius Fox's area is finance, not invention. He goes on to oversee business affairs Bruce has no time for.
No version contradicted this, afaik, until they let Goyer write the screenplay for the reboot.
