  • The purchase of two large SD70M-2 locomotives by a shortline railroad is not something you typically see everyday...but that is just what the Vermont Rail System did, acquiring two of the large six-axle beasts from the Florida East Coast Railway. During the course of the most recent months, the VTR 431, one of the two SD70s, was sent to get repainted and remodeled to a whole new "heritage" look to become one of the only shortline owned SD70s in America, aside from the neighboring Providence and Worcester Railroad.
    On an excellent, clear yet windy morning, the large beast is seen on the railroad's train known as GMRC 263, shining up its brand new home rails for the first time in it's all new look: a red and white that is so bright and magnificent that shows the 53 year-old shortline's true passion into serving this country's industry with pride. For it's first journey on it's new rails, the train climbs up a large incline to reach the top of the Green Mountains, letting us listen to the 431, as well as the three engines behind it roar into full throttle through one of the most iconic places of scenery in the whole Northeastern United States.
    Please sit back and enjoy a nice, short chase of one of the country's only shortline-owned SD70M-2 locomotives..
    TIMETABLE listed below:
    (0:00) Just as I started to set up my camera, the train roars into full throttle as it starts to make its way up the mountain. The clip was cut short so that I could catch up to the train. The paint on the unit was so fresh that I could smell it.
    (1:25) The full side of the unit is now shown as it passes by a VRS MOW crew in Cuttingsville. This time the clip was cut short because my camera ran out of memory...
    (3:30) The grade of the mountain slightly inclines as the train passes by an old farm in East Wallingford.
    (5:50) The train finally reaches the summit in Mount Holly and will soon make its way back downgrade. I apologize for the camera jostles in the beginning...I had placed my tripod on top of a snow bank, and the tripod sunk in. My camera also shut off for some reason and I managed to get it back on just before the train passed. I would have gone further, but with something else that I needed to do, I ended the chase here.

    Vermont Railways isn’t the only one that’s now owns SD70M-2s. The Providence & Worcester also has them.

      Actually, I believe that is the same horn it had before it got sent to get repainted. Here's a video of it from the summer of 2016: (czcams.com/video/yUKE6VLD8L4/video.html)

      That's not new, that's the same one it always had.

      The sounds of horns change depending on the weather and season. A horn sounds nicer and clearer on a cool summer day or night. When it snows and the temperature gets cold the horn sounds lower pitched. I’ve noticed that with my own K3HA and the K3LA on R&N 5049 recently.

    The M-2 doesn't have the vent on the side like the ACe does. That's the only difference lol XD.

    Thanks for sharing this video! This was actually videotaped on January 11, 2017, not January 1, 2017, right? If so, you might want to correct the "Date of footage."

      Yes, the correct date was January 11.....Sometimes I just gotta take my time and type my descriptions more thoroughly lol but thank you for watching!

    Wait, isn't A&M also a shortline railroad or is it a regional railroad?

    • @GreenMountainRailProductions
      @GreenMountainRailProductions  Před 7 lety

      Actually yes, that would be a class III railroad, probably about as big as the VRS. I did not realize that; it's really cool to see six axle power operating on class III railroads nevertheless!

    like them better on the fec, they would haul ass they barely do 30 mph now

    • @GreenMountainRailProductions
      @GreenMountainRailProductions  Před 7 lety +1

      Actually my friend you are wrong. Sure the job in this video only goes 10 mph, but other jobs on this system can go faster. The B&R job can go 35 mph in some places, the RDBD/BDRD job can go about 40 mph (the SD70s are rarely used on this line but are capable of it) and the nightly CLP 263-264 job can go up to 45 mph in some spots and 40 mph in others.

    Christ, that crossing at the start looks dangerous. Very limited sighting and no barriers, crosses the line obliquely, and apparently no audible warning either. You might easily not notice those lights with the sun shining directly on them.

    • @GreenMountainRailProductions
      @GreenMountainRailProductions  Před 7 lety +1

      Most of the train crossings on this section of the VRS are like this....typically you can see the signals lighting up from the road but people do ignore them! Rumor has it that they are upgrading many of the crossings along the VRS to gates, LED signals and E-bells, but it might not be true
