[4K] New England Central 611 Southbound Past Fields and Over Trestles
On a cloudy, dreary March 26, 2021, New England Central train 611 makes it's way southbound on it's weekday journey from Brattleboro, Vermont to Palmer, Massachusetts and back. I caught them at Vernon VT, and chased them to Three Rivers, Mass., just outside of Palmer, catching them rolling past fields and making their way over old trestle bridges through the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. The train is led by "Mr. Croaky," a Genesee and Wyoming-painted SD40M-2 with an awesome Leslie RS3L horn, and trailing are another SD40-2 and a GP40-2W; the latter will be dropped off at Palmer. The train was very short for a typical NECR train.

(7:31) Belchertown, MA
Engines normally move through this crossing in full throttle since they are currently tackling a grade, but because the train was so short, there was no need.
(9:06) Three Rivers, MA
I almost missed the train here, but I was able to pull my camera out just in time to catch them rolling over another bridge that crosses the Quaboag River.

Fatal track condition, do trains run there regularly or exceptionally? I can't see any rust on the rails, they look like they're frequently used.
Love the video. RS3’s are my favourite loco. A lot of people filming it or are they the same group? Here in B.C. Canada they call us “FTN’s”. The T & N stand for train nut. The F stands for something not printable. I have a hogger friend who worked for CPR and he told me this. I love the scenery in that neck of NY state too.

If that has the 244 prime mover, they were known for overheating. That’s how so many of them developed cracks in the cylinder heads. They had a unique sound, but they were really poor engines. There are many EMDs built in the early 50’s still working today. Much more reliable.

Supposedly, the VRS does not allow 6 able locomotives on this route. Therefore, you see the five 4 axle GP's pulling this auto rack train instead. Anyway, what a treat this is to see! (Fo some reason I am beginning to stand corrected here. Another CZcams video here i viewed shows the use of six axle power!)

Some of the sounds the rolling stock make remind me of the sounds of a diner during a busy shift: clatters and clinks of plates, glasses, and silverware. This is just a really well recorded video: some of the best sound I've heard on a railroad vid.
That horn around 6:45 is almost as awesome as the trademark Alco rumble! Great video with superb sound.

Always amazed at how bad the US infrastructure is. One of the worlds richest countries and the track is crumbling under the train, cars bobbing around and speed is rarely exceeding walking speed. Even the tracks in dirt poor countries like Moldova are in way better shape.
It's what you get when your railways exist to make a profit rather than provide a service...
We saw that passing through Rutland then a little while later going through Castleton. Any info on this ?? When we saw it they were heading west. This video shows them heading east/south. Did they do an interchange in Whitehall N.Y. and return the way they came ? Nice video, great catch ! 👍
P.S. We had two of these on the RR I used to work at. They were work horses with power.
They need some rail work in few spots. If not, derailment will happen. Alcos, 4 cycle big diesels = cool locomotives.
