How Mauricio Pochettino Would Set Up Manchester United | Starting XI, Formation & Tactics

- Welcome back! Following the mutual termination of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s contract, Manchester United are looking for a new manager and despite a whole host of names being linked to the job, such as Zinedine Zidane, Erik ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino makes a lot of sense to me so today I’m going to take a look at how he’d set the Reds up.

A progressive and modern manager with a clear style of play, Mauricio Pochettino is a top tier manager. Throughout his career he’s shown himself to be a tactically flexible manager that uses a variety of different systems. That being said his favourite shape is the 4-2-3-1. In terms of his philosophy, Pochettino deploys a vertical tiki taka style of play. Basically, Poch likes his sides to dominate the ball, using short passes to build out from the back but rather than endless possession like we see with traditional tiki taka, Pochettino uses direct passes to quickly break lines and flip the tempo. A key aspect of Pochettino’s philosophy is attacking full backs. These players are used to hold his side’s width. This allows the forwards to narrow and operate close to one another, allowing for the quick interplay that won Pochettino so many plaudits. Chances are created through direct crosses from the full backs but we also see these players play inside to the forwards who create goalscoring opportunities through interplay. The narrowness of Pochettino’s central players makes his counter press very effective as they can quickly press the ball knowing their defensive teammates will provide cover. If his side can’t regain possession they drop into a compact 4-2-3-1 and look to deploy a high press.
► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch
Pochettino’s best 4-2-3-1 came at Spurs where he took the team from consistent 6th place finishers to Premier League and Champions League challengers in less than three seasons.
In this shape he used two attacking wing backs and two ball playing defenders shielded by a controlling, defensive midfielder and a more attack minded, ball carrying midfielder.
A deep lying forward spearheaded the attack supported by an inside forward on the left, a second striker through the middle and a playmaker on the right hand side. Given this is the system that saw his Spurs side pick up more points than anyone else between the 15/16 and 16/17 seasons (156), it’s logical to assume that Pochettino would base his Manchester United side on this 4-2-3-1.
With a plethora of attacking talent in Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Paul Pogba, Pochettino would have his work cut out identifying his best eleven.
Statman Dave Clips ➡ bit.ly/StatmanClips
The Mauricio Pochettino revolution at Manchester United could actually hit the ground running. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer moved the club forward during his management and has built a side with lots of talented young players that Pochettino could work with. We’ve also seen United score Pochettino-esque goals this season with Ronaldo’s first goal against Atalanta in matchday 4 of the 21/22 Champions League being a great example.
But anyway guys what do you think? Is this how you think Pochettino would setup Manchester United? Let me know in the comments below!

Was loving the video until 6:34, when he said McTominay is press resistant. Think we've been watching different Scotts
Whoever is our next manager should solve the midfield issue. Get a good attacking rb and sign a good cb to play next to varane.
I think a 6 and a RB shud be prioritized
ideally they come in and change captains, maybe to varane if hes going to be no.1 choice, but could see it going to bruno or ronaldo
I think if Maguire is healthy he is fine
Lindelof is good enough, to be honest. We just need another reliable CB who can be called upon if either Lindo or Varane is unavailable. Maguire is a time bomb and Bailly is not reliable.
Everybody knows we need a DM and there are plenty of options. As for RB I'd hope for Ethan Laird to get his chance, young player who's good offensively that will hopefully try his best to match Wan-bissakas strengths in defence. At CB I'd love to see us sign Inacio from Sporting so that he can come in and with time take the spot next to Varane, which wouldn't take too long with our current CB's...
Statman Dave never fails to excite me with these what if videos. Poch at United looks promising indeed!
@@tooshlong I wouldn't mind to try out Lindelof at 6 till we get a proper 6
@@tooshlong Go on then, let's here why?
@@tooshlong Veratti, Jorginho, Rodri, Casemiro, Fernandinho, then older players like Modric, Pirlo, Carrick etc. All brilliant holding MFs, none of them blessed with rapid pace, none of them bruisers with brute strength, defensive minded, great readers of the game that saw where to be, where to intercept and good distributors of the ball. All things Lindelof is good at (or at least better at than current MFs we have), it's the physicality of a Prem CB he lacks. I think it could be a really good move in the short term. The days of Keane, Gattuso, Vidal are gone and there's only one Kanté unfortunately.
@@tooshlong OK mate, good talk🤣🤦♂️👍
@@tooshlong Nice touch that you misspelled idiot 🤣👍👏
We shouldn't worry anyway McSauce is mobile and strong so if that's all you need to play there, we're golden.
Have you thrown your name in the hat for the manager's job btw?
You seem to really know your stuff...
Mctominay and press resistant, not two words I ever thought I’ll hear together 😱
I nearly reported the video after hearing that
Honest to god mate he’s dreadful- don’t understand why Fred gets more slander!
This Dave guy lives in fantasy. All his shannigan is just some theory only exist in his head
From what I've seen from ethan laird- i think he'd excel under poch
100% yes
Sancho and laird on the right hand side next season 😍 😋

Chelsea sacked a club legend, hired an ex PSG coach won the UCL.
United sacked a club legend, about to hire an ex-PSG coach…
Are you thinking what I’m thinking Dave? 👀
The Argentine Dream 😍
Like Chelsea we also signed world players this summer ( except from Heaton)
@@ayo3098 heaton is one of the best goalkeepers in the world
"United sacked a club legend, about to hire an ex-PSG coach…" and wins nothing. The difference is Chelsea has an owner who's ambition is to win the biggest trophies, we have owners who just want us to finish top 4 so they can take some cash out. You can dream but seriously be realistic.
Chelsea's board know what they're doing though
Timo Werner is back wearing a Leipzig shirt!!
I’d personally start Alex Telles as Lb, defensively and physically I can see shaw is better but offensively Alex Telles is the best and most consistent attacking Full back we posses
Shaw played for Poch at Soton, he will play him if he joins Utd
we can obviously play 3-5-2 if he wants to play both.
@@footballbrainer279 Poch apparently wasn’t always his biggest fan and was critical of his attitude. Shaw has never maintained consistency in his career.
@@JACK102851 I mean. A lot has changed tho. I think Shaw will play
Did you watch the match today? Telles was shit.
There was a lot of focus on his spurs, understandably so bcoz that was the best representation of his style. But it would have been nice to look at some of the tactical changes he has made at PSG. Managers never really copy profile for profile from an old team
yes thats what i was thinking , because he might make changes according to the players
@@pse161 I would have thought so, our wingers aren’t th best at tracking back so it might make sense to go 433, also giving that bit more control in midfield. Might not also go with the 2 full flying wing backs. At OSG he’s experimented with wingers holding width mostly, since he at times has Diallo and or Kehrer at FB who r more CBs
Let's all go watch the video he made of Ole before he came to United to see if it aged well 😂😂😂🤣

@@tooshlong those are the players currently available, everybody knows that for this to work signings are needed. He's already made videos about those signings before. He didn't even say that they were perfect fits for those roles
I feel McTominay has been poor this season. While Fred got all the flack, Scott gives even less in that DM position.
Facts..
Yesss been waiting for this video, good stuff Dave
Good video Timo!
Can see it being a great setup, it'll take time to evolve the players into his philosophy. There would be a signing or 2 needed but this squad is truly great and could thrive with some serious coaching and man management
Great and insightful as always.......but i would personally like to know more about Velverde and how he would set up man united as an interim manager
cool video mate. and spot on. who would be the right DMF to add to the squad?
One touch passes and fast football gets this team cruising past defences. A coach who can make them okay that well will make us a force to reckon in the league and europe. I think that is ETH personally
@@tooshlong First signing this summer has to be a number 6, followed along with a RB.
we still need more fresh players but yeah VDB and Sancho need more plays, someone shld step up and change Maguire, Dalot could be interesting changes for AWB, unsure for Henderson but could play few games and rest DDG
Dave signaling Rangnick preference with the RB kit 👀
🤝
This is the one we've been waiting for
Would love it if you created this tatic on football manager
Dalot will be outplayed as a full back by the technical strikers, and Wan Bisaka is not productive in attack. In other words, needs a new right full back. If 4-2-3-1 is used, a new defensive midfielder is required to partner with Scott. Pogba in this role is very risky because he often loses balls near the penalty area, and in defense makes reckless tackles. The other four are fine, but have to rotate more often because they are exhausted from the many games during the season and their form is falling. Tactically, the producer must be pressed much more often and higher than with Solskjaer.
@@tooshlong and you have not seen anything yet
Don't think he meant to talk about signings since he's done that in past videos, the defensive midfielder issue always comes up. Pogba will hopefully be gone next season and hopefully Ethan Laird will get his chance on right back
"partner with Scott" how long will it take before people realise Scott is worse than fred
@@redtimez4520 scott is can do something, Fred can't do anything
@@redtimez4520 Scott is a much smarter player than Fred. He is also more technical, participates more actively in the attack, wins aerial matches in the penalty area, has a better shot. For Scotland, he plays as a central defender, which means that he is more universal, ie with a bigger IQ than Fred
Mere hours after u post this Sancho scored a goal very similar to one u showed
That's a dope Leipzig kit Dave🔥
I’m convinced 👍
I believe that Poch could use Bailly instead of Maguire. He is faster and United could be able to play a higher line even if De Gea cant learn the sweeper keeper role.
Matic would be the first choice DM but we know he wont play every game. So maybe Fred is better option than McTominay. Although McTominay can drop to a third CB position when needed and I cant say the same about Fred.
Why are we still even trying to use Baily, we are a big club, we can get a better CB.
@@jaskaranbhangu1456 baily is better then lindelof and Maguire
maguire gets away with alot never gets dropped even when playing bad and anyone with football knowledge can see bailly an varane will be a better partnership with the high press maguire will be the weak link coz of his pace and mobility we've seen it many times he not up to the task but the English media stil defending him bailly has a mistake in him little bit rash but with verane next to him all good
Galbraith and Garner will be developed under Poch. Both have the potential to be the next level double pivot.
I agree Bailey is better than Maguire and will allow us to play a high line
Surely interesting
Pochettino uses press resistant players on midfield...I don't think pogba gets a single game under poche
Few years back on an interview he said ' if pogba has the ball if we press it then we can win the ball ' (said similar like statement when asked about benefits of pressing)
Pogba hopefully won't be here next season. This is just a setup with the current squad, but it's obvious that a midfield signing is needed
Pogba is the best creative attacking midfielder in Europe. He is not a central midfield player and Donny is not an attacking half.
And you think Mctominay is the press resistant one? He would be no where near this team especially with his terrible passing and cluelessness. Poch uses one defensive and one offensive in the pivot and Pogba is by far the best for the offensive role given his strength not just his creativity and the fact that he would have the freedom to roam and create unlike in this current United that just keeps him at the back with clueless defenders. Mctominay is the last person that he would consider in this team, even Phil Jones would be considered before him.
@@richardobiekwe9437 Pogba can't play in a pivot consistantly cause he's the worst defender in the entire team, our attackers are better defensively than him. Even if he's the offensive one he needs to be able to stop counter attacks and tackle
Can you do one about River plate manager marcelo ballardo
Trying to set this up on Football manager but really dont know what roles to use for the midfielders
You forgot to include Pochettino’s most important move, as the one to replace Russell Crowe in “Gladiator 2”
Didn't know Timo Werner had a CZcams Channel
please do this for valverde, united opened talks today with him
Overall good video on poch but you may wanna reconsider your rating of this squad, maguire and mctom are not great in progressive systems we seen that under ralf and when ronny tries to do the deep lying forward he does static link up play (passing the ball straight back) and get bullied off the ball sometimes
Make one for Erik Ten Hag please
Statman Dave as interim manager 💪🏻
Until this video, I thought Poch plays 4-2-2-2 formation usually but not actually . Thanks Dave
Redbull pochettino it is
Pochettino for the United job is such a no-brainer. He will give them a system and an identity. He's far and away the best candidate of the available managers. If he could get Spurs to the UCL final, imagine what he could do with these players. Even if they don't win anything with him, he will improve them dramatically.
Best candidate 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Pochettino has never actually won a major trophy as a manager and even lost the French league title to Lille.
Why on earth anybody would think he deserves the Utd manager job is beyond me.
@@bighands69 yup
@@bighands69 He's recognized in the game as being a top manager even though he hasn't won a major trophy. PSG could have hired anyone with the money they have yet they hired Poch. If it were only about winning trophies, then Mourinho would still be United manager. Mourinho has more trophies than anyone yet it didn't work out so great for him and Van Gaal and the supporters didn't want them in the end.
Interesting
Do a ten hag one plz
Can you do one for ten Hag ?
Can you break down Micheal carrick style of play ?
Think Laird has a great chance of nailing down that RB spot under Poch in the next couple of years if he does get the job
Can you make a video on sancho and lingard at wing back plzzz I really want to hear ur thoughts 👍👍👍
Are you out of your mind? Wing backs need to be able to defend... Sancho definitely cannot defend, nor can Lingard.
Makes no sense, why would they struggle with that just to make your career mode a reality.
At 2:02 you say "Underlapping passing lanes" but in the picture the fullback clearly Overlaps his winger by going wide and beyond him. Or am I understanding it wrong?
Great analysis as always though!
The underlap is the pass from full-back inside to a more advanced player.
@@blindduality8136 makes perfect sense. i got confused because in the video it shows the wingers moving inwards, which wouldnt really leave space for the fullback to underlap
@StatmanDave
I think the club has an agreement with Poch & this happened when we tried to get him after Ole left but PSG wanted Zidane & said no untill they confirm him so there was a chance we could of got him at Christmas but Zidane didn’t reply but at the end of January start of February Zidane answered PSG & PSG confirmed Zidane to take over in June.
So I think we will confirm Poch late April early May & he comes in around late May early June
McTominay press resistant? Maguire in a high line? Really?
Mctominay is press resistant
McSauce is actually press resistant.
He is correct.
Yeah he's decent at dribbling out of a press but his poor first touch and passing is what let's him down. Would like to sign Tchouameni who would play with Pogba and then have Fred, Donny and McTom as rotation
@@liyakhanyanonkondlo523 he hides behind players.
@@toruwalt yeah in terms of ball carrying, he's decent. But passing wise, if you press him and force a pass, he'll pass it backwards or lose it with a risky misplaced pass

Ethan Laird and Gailbraith can both do well under him Gailbraith can play as RB as well as Anywhere in the midfield and Shaw have to step up as LB my only problem with him would be We don't have the kind of striker he likes
🔥👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Martial's technical ability as a 9 under poch would be spicy.
Can you do a fm22 tactic for this tactic
Bruh, how hard can that be?
I saw an article that said United could go heavy for Poch in the ligue winter break and get him in for christmas. Then Zidane can take over psg in Jan. Tuchel-esque move
Why on earth would PSG go to all the trouble to get Poch and then let him go to Utd. It is not going to happen.
PSG are not interested in the low amounts of money Utd can offer for a manager.
Big up Timo Werner for helping rivals Man United get a good manager
I actually think Poch should use a 4-3-3 at United. Play it in a way to get the best out of United’s players. On the right have Wan Bissaka, Bruno and Sancho. Wan Bissaka to operate more as a withdrawn inverted fullback looking to overload in midfield and over lap Sancho when needed to, Bruno would push forward in the halfspace to link up with Sancho and Ronaldo while making runs in behind and Sancho out wide keeping the width.
The left side would have Pogba/Van De Beek with Rashford/Martial and Shaw. This side would have a midfielder deep dictating play with an inverted winger looking to run in behind and create space out wide for Shaw to overlap.
Matic/McTominay would play as the number 6 just recycling possession and looking to stop transitions in a disciplined role, United are far too open now.
All the next manager has to do is work with the defence that we have and get them playing how they should be, prob buy a solid defensive midfielder and let the attack do their job! We are not far away and a competent manager can take us there. Thank you Ole for all that you have done but now it's time for someone to come in and take us to that next level. I believe Poch is the man to do it... SIGN HIM UP!!
@Statman Dave please do Ernesto Valverde i wanna know his tactics he’s been linked already
Every manager is a flexible manager for statman dave
Poch plays very similar to what Ragnick likes. Which is the heavy metal style.

There's no way McTominay would work as the more defensive one of the midfielders
He gets bypassed WAY too easily and his positioning to block passes is atrocious
Don't get me wrong he's a decent player and probably a nice lad but we have WAY better players at the club for his position which is basically Pogba's position

I would want Bielsa at the club with Pep and Klopp as his staff. United are the biggest British club in the world and have the financial and social media clout to make it happen. All three of them know the league, their clubs have historic relationships with the club.
United have spent one BILLION on player acquisitions...spending a tenth on that for getting these managers would secure the future.
Don't expect it to work at United . Spurs under Pochettino were united for a cause and wanted to do better . United at present seem to have a culture of complacency and entitlement
Hello

You expect him to win the league with Tottenham and Southampton?
Poch is the perfect candidate for man utd
All you have to do is look at the game PSG had today with City. PSG and Poch pretty much got dominated, out played while leaving PSG and Poch clueless most of the time.

@@tooshlong No i don't think so. I just love the way he makes it look simple
