Thanks for honoring OT’s short but important story that is part of the history of the Cardinals and baseball itself. There has been a few tragic deaths that come to mind for the Cardinals. Darryl Kile was probably the biggest shock since he was found dead in his hotel while on a road game in Chicago on the day of a game.
Im a US born Dominican and the sad thing about is Dominicans who live in the US and go visit DR like to break all the driving rules that they try so hard to respect in the US. In DR the rules of the roads are just suggestions. Law enforcement does a terrible job of enforcing it. Ive driven in DR before and it has been a terrible experience. Dominicans who live in the US and visit DR go to the beach (Sosua is a well known beach city) get insanely drunk and drive back. Their whole vacation is basically spent driving drunk. Ive seen people driving with an open beer bottle in the car and literally drink while driving. Its sad when people respect their new homes laws more than thee laws of the place they grew up at.
I'm conflicted about stories like this. On one hand, a young man died before he was able to get his life started, but on the other hand, this guy decided to get shit faced and get behind the wheel of a sports car. Its only through fate or divine intervention that he didn't kill someone else (besides his GF)
My buddies and I still talk about this man to this day every now and then. Would’ve been awesome to see how his career panned out. A travesty. A shame. Alcohol with automobiles ain’t it kids
This wasn't some Greek tragedy. He killed himself and his girlfriend by driving shit-faced. He was well aware of the potential consequences of those actions. Just because he was good at hitting a ball, doesn't make him any less of a murderer. The lack of any actual action on the part of the Cardinals (a franchise built on the back of alcohol sales) is the reason why I am no longer a fan. I could not tolerate the hypocrisy. There are things much more important than how well your favorite sports team does.
Its crazy how many baseball players pass away in accidents. Like anytime I hear about a baseball player death its a vehicle accident or some other horrible accident of some kind, really strange
Not disrespecting him but he chose to drive drunk and him and his girlfriend paid the price and are still honored but when Fernandez drove his boat drunk and killed himself and 2 others they didn’t honor him after the first game….why the double standard for similar circumstances?
It’s tragic how you act like you’re a perfect human being. It’s people like you who need to commit. Like why are you living? POS like you live, and great people like Oscar are dead. You’re a pathetic human. Enjoy being a worthless nobody your whole life little boy.
Man I will never forget Oscar Taveras!!! I'm from St Louis I've been Cardinals fan all my life... I remember looking at him and seeing that swing and it was like Albert Pujols from the left side!! He was it man he was going to be it!! Were talking like the caliber of another Albert Pujols!! I won't hold him up to that standard and that height but he was good!! Anyone can see it once you see that swing!! I can see it.. He was the kind of player where all the fans were looking for a home run when he came up!! It's such a shame man!!
The death of Oscar really dereailed our farm system for a long time, and still to an extent today. He I firmly believe would be one of the best outfielders in the game today.
Exactly! I don’t know why people get easily findable info like this wrong. If you’re gonna make videos do some research. The cards beat the dodgers 3-1 in the nlds but lost to the giants 4-1 in the nlcs
Maybe it's time at the MLB stop honoring people who irresponsibly behave. That might actually have a stronger impact than the worship that these irresponsible people get. Just a thought.
As a Saint Louis fan, alcohol has really plagued our sports teams. It's not just Hancock and Taveras. Tony LaRussa was arrested for DUI while he was the team's manager back in 2007 (way to set an example for the team, asshole). And St Louis Rams player Leonard Little killed another person while driving drunk back in 1998.
This is very sad, but it's hard to have sympathy for him. I had a friend at work who was killed by a drunk driver. He was a very good person with 4 kids. His job was to help poor and underserved kids find scholarships so they could keep going to college _(I worked at a community college);_ he and his wife and dog were killed when a drunk driver came around a bend, swerved off the road and killed all 3. I also had a student who suffered terrible injuries in a drunk driving incident _(he was the passenger)._ He lost one arm, one eye, one ear and most of the other, his nose, and suffered horrific burns when he was trapped in the fiery wreck _(his nose and ears essentially melted)._ The driver lived but a passenger in a different car died; the driver went to prison _(I might have the details a little off; this was years ago and my student wasn't keen to relive the whole thing. I only met him after the accident)._ I know Tavares was young and promising and probably a nice person, but he got drunk and killed himself and his girlfriend. He would have known not to drive drunk but he did it anyway. I'm sorry he's gone, and that he never got a chance to live up to his promise, but don't drive drunk. Sometimes good people get killed.
I really don't understand all the honors. This guy got wasted and killed himself and his girlfriend by being incredibly irresponsible. This man should not be honored and instead be used as a cautionary tale to not be like this guy.
He was young. He likely thought he was invincible as many young people do. Yes, he did wrong, but everyone makes mistakes when they are young. Why should he be any different? It's just too bad his dumb mistake led to two lost lives. To be fair, though, it's just as much his girlfriend's fault as it was his, since she should have taken the keys away from him or, at the very least, not rode in the car with him. Both of them unfortunately weren't thinking rationally.
Murder? You’ve been all up and down this comment section saying how easy it is to not drive drunk, and not be an alcoholic, well isn’t it just as easy to not get in a car with someone who’s been drinking? @@B3Band

No one told her she had to get into the car. Yes, he did wrong, but she should have either taken the keys away from him or not rode in the car at all. Her death is just as much her fault as it is his.
I still remember when this happened. I was in a winter league game in Estadio Quisqueya in the DR... It felt like the world ended.
I didn’t realize the dodgers played in SF. Got a full on baseball video and don’t have the teams right.
I was at that NLCS win when Tavares hit the typing HR. Wong hit a walkoff later. Very sad what happened
5:23 Great video! but just a little confused as you say dodgers here when the on screen graphic shows giants?
“Following josh Hancock” *shows brad thompson* lolol
I was at his debut in 2014 when I was 8, miss him
Just stumbled on this. RIP young man.
Woah, having no idea about this story, this was such an emotional rollercoaster.
Beautiful video loved it
Thank you so much!
On a more positive note, Oscar Taveras became an absolute stud on my Boston Red Sox team in MLB The Show (14?). I remember making a massive trade for him. Was using a well known fan-made full roster set so I had all the real prospects on thier right teams. He had potential in the 90's! So, long story short, in my little universe he won a world series ring at least.
I very faintly remember watching him and I am just finding out about all this. RIP OT
What a tragic story to a historic talent. Rest in peace Oscar
Its so easy to not drink and drive. Unfortunately young stars like him think they're invincible at the age. RIP amigo!
Never know maybe he was an alcoholic
It's pretty easy to not be an alcoholic, too. Most people do it every day.
And being an alcoholic is still not an excuse to also get in your car and kill someone.
@@B3Band obviously you've never struggled with addiction. If you have a certain gene set it is extremely easy to become and alcoholic without hardly even noticing. But yes I do agree with the drinking and driving portion. Everyone makes mistakes though.
@@EzzManateerktmtasdasdad No. Not everyone kills two people with mistakes
@@lucasng4712 I agree being intoxicated behind the wheel is not okay in any way shape or form. Not trying to defend anyone doing that. Just trying to bring awareness about the struggles of alcoholism.
i still think about him from time to time. My family has a signed ball of his that we won from a ball bag drawing. such a rising star that we wont ever see again
Ball bag lol
What an awesome tribute video
A blood alcohol concentration of .287 is insane.
You showed Brad Thompson pitching and then cut to Josh Hancock pitching. Brad Thompson co-hosts a sports talk show in St. Louis and is alive and well. I’m only pointing this out cause I don’t usually notice stuff like this but as a cardinals fan I caught that one. 😅 Great content by the way.
Can’t forget Yordano Venturas 7ip 3 H 0R performance in game 6 with the “RIP O.T. #18” on his hat after Oscar passed away
My buddies and I still talk about this man to this day every now and then. Would’ve been awesome to see how his career panned out. A travesty. A shame. Alcohol with automobiles ain’t it kids
I spent time in the D.R. and every day I’d drive by the dead tree that he hit. Nothing but a small cross at the bottom
Does the piano in the last minute have to be so loud?
What is the intro song?
Wow that was the same guy?? I never knew. RIP OT from the north side
I was at the game he hit his first home run
This still hurts. I cried the morning I read the news.
100% the truth right here
People in here are more upset that his death ruined their projections.
His batting average was .239 that’s below average.
His blood alcohol (.287) was higher than his batting average (.239).
Just saying.
Impressive
My blood alcohol is always bigger than my batting average.
Its crazy how many baseball players pass away in accidents. Like anytime I hear about a baseball player death its a vehicle accident or some other horrible accident of some kind, really strange
Still makes me sad, and sent big ripples through the organization. FYI at 7:10 that is Brad Thompson not Josh Hancock.
4:53 You keep mentioning the Dodgers, but show footage from the Cubs and Giants. What's up?
He misspoke lol
Damn this was some news to me in i livin St.Louis I remember a little bit of hearing this when it happened
Not disrespecting him but he chose to drive drunk and him and his girlfriend paid the price and are still honored but when Fernandez drove his boat drunk and killed himself and 2 others they didn’t honor him after the first game….why the double standard for similar circumstances?
Well done 👏🏼
Yeah, hard to believe, saw him in AAA,was hot prospect, tragic how it ended!
Tragic is a strange word to describe a drunk driver who murdered his own girlfriend.
Is it not tragic that he made that decision and two people died?
It’s tragic how you act like you’re a perfect human being. It’s people like you who need to commit. Like why are you living? POS like you live, and great people like Oscar are dead. You’re a pathetic human. Enjoy being a worthless nobody your whole life little boy.
.287 was higher than his batting average.
5:23 “The Dodger advance with a 3-1 series win”, what?? Dodgers?? Those were the Giants and they won that NLCS vs the Cardinals 4-1
Damn those San Francisco Dodgers.
As a San Francisco fan who hates the Dodgers I was conflicted. Turns out I was really just confused
So sad. And so preventable. Damn :(
LOL why is Brad Thompson in the video at 7:11
heartbreaking...
Being extremely hammered and also killing his gf makes it much less sad 🤷♂️
Crazy how to made decisions that lead to not only his own death but that of his girlfriend as well
Damn
The death of Oscar really dereailed our farm system for a long time, and still to an extent today. He I firmly believe would be one of the best outfielders in the game today.
I watched that spring training game. It was a funny moment.
4:55 - Giants, not Dodgers.
Exactly! I don’t know why people get easily findable info like this wrong. If you’re gonna make videos do some research. The cards beat the dodgers 3-1 in the nlds but lost to the giants 4-1 in the nlcs
"Faced off against the dodgers in a 5 game set and in game 2 did this" proceeds to show cardinals giants...
Maybe it's time at the MLB stop honoring people who irresponsibly behave. That might actually have a stronger impact than the worship that these irresponsible people get.
Just a thought.
I wasn’t very familiar with Oscar and I definitely wasn’t expecting that ending to the video
RIP Young Man
As a Saint Louis fan, alcohol has really plagued our sports teams. It's not just Hancock and Taveras. Tony LaRussa was arrested for DUI while he was the team's manager back in 2007 (way to set an example for the team, asshole). And St Louis Rams player Leonard Little killed another person while driving drunk back in 1998.
This is why we're told over and over 'Don't Drink and Drive'. If only more listened...
That’s Brad Thompson #48 that you showed on the video, he’s not dead.
I noticed that too. Hancock never wore #48.
was that Alex Cora hitting at first?
RIP The Rainmaker
I only met him after the accident)._
I know Tavares was young and promising and probably a nice person, but he got drunk and killed himself and his girlfriend. He would have known not to drive drunk but he did it anyway. I'm sorry he's gone, and that he never got a chance to live up to his promise, but don't drive drunk. Sometimes good people get killed.
Heartbreaking
Showed a bit of talent when he was in the majors, will never know if he would have made it
I really don't understand all the honors.
@@danman6669 lol @ playing off a literal murder as "he's young, young people make mistakes"
He was an adult. Stop making excuses for a murderer.
@@danman6669 He was a grown man.
Murder? You’ve been all up and down this comment section saying how easy it is to not drive drunk, and not be an alcoholic, well isn’t it just as easy to not get in a car with someone who’s been drinking? @@B3Band
I agree, same as Jose Fernandez. Being younger is not an excuse, these days and those days people knew the dangers of drinking or drugging and operating a motor vehicle.
