- I spent the majority of my career as a mechanic working on Volvo's. early Volvos used the VCS handheld scan tool to talk. 1998 to 2000 used the VCI 2000. (A horrible tool) and then Volvo created VIDA and the DICE adaptor.
The VIDA software is slow, and can be confusing at first, but it does have a great Repair area, diag area, and even a parts catalog as well as the factory level scan tool functions. Even the early 2001 Volvos had almost 20 computers so owning one of these is critical if you want to really know how to keep your Volvo alive.

When faults are cleared what remains is what is still current. Going back to initial state is miss leading, as that will always show all codes before reset. Hope that helps.

The alarm unit ,front under wing is a sealed unit ,but can be opened.mostly internal Battery is corroded and Dead, bord unit can be cleaned of all residue ,and suitable Battery online to purchase ,refit and re-seal with Mastic

Working on volvos was a nightmare that I am mostly over from. I have my own winter beater, and I do still have a few old customers that followed me when I left the dealer. These cars are needlessly complex and very prone to gremlins. Be happy that your blood pressure has never been affected by one of these buggers!

The climate control module on my car is the issue I need to resolve before winter really begins.
I have a weird failure that seems to point to the CEM so far. What happens is the panel just goes dark. Then every once in a while it wakes up while the car is running. And everything works! Defroster , blender doors, fan speeds. Everything. When it does come on like this it stays on. Until the car engine is shut off. Then it keeps staying on for one minute after the key is removed. Similar to the courtesy lights.
And then when the car is started up again the panel remains dark and there are no climate options at all. The interval of it waking up while driving has not been at all predictable. More always dark. It even came on while idle in park the other day. And just recently, the last time it came on was after the car was shut off! It has been two days now it has not lit up and the car has been used several times.
I thought it was just the CCM last winter so I tried to get a replacement and once it was installed it took a few drive cycles to wake up and only woke up about a minute after starting the engine, but it did work for heat all season but come summer it would not work for AC.
I accepted a mechanics word for it that it would never be compatible with the AC.
But now this autumn this replacement CCM is dark and I am wondering if it ever was the real problem.
I obtained a blower and resistor and almost tore the old fan assembly out from under the dash. But the reactivation of the CCM makes me think that would be silly if it is something else.
I keep reading around the issue these climate control systems have and I have not found an exact fit for this problem I am having. So far I have now settled on the CEM with all those relays it has on it.
Somewhere I read a couple of things that sound close to the symptoms I've experienced. I do hear some frantic clicking under the drivers side dash every now and then. It is possibly unrelated to the climate issue because the window switches are a little off. And the relays under there definitely make the same sound as when the back windows twitch. But I was just wondering if this IS a possible place to focus on. I did a little exploring under the dash yesterday. It look like with some effort the whole CEM can be dropped down and examined. One of the post I read suggested changing the relays around and cleaning every single plug in component to rule out bad connections and relays. I should say the battery voltage seems to be good everywhere. But the CEM ground connection is another place the suggestions mentioned to be sure to verify. It also mentioned micro cracks in the cicuit board. Jee wizz!

Vvt intake timing request/real degrees comparison would be interesting to see. Very common malfunction of the vvt solenoid in an old Volvo S60/V70 etc.

Im about to pull the trigger on vida/dice, but tell me if youve ever heard of this before. 2011 s60 t6 awd. Sometimes when I accelerate from stop/slow speed, I will feel the pedal begin to vibrate, and the car will fight back. Almost feels like its kicking in and out of limp mode. Eventually it will throw the dcst and abs lights, and return to normal driving. Then the blis system fails shortly after, and the cruise control no longer works. As for problems that I know about - All four tpms sensors are missing, if I let it sit for a few days, next time before I start, I will get a low battery message. Battery message goes away when vehicle is turned on. I can not seem to figure out what this problem is
A question. Id Dice specific to the model and year? Vida only reads FT232R USB VART when the dice is plugged into the usb port. I have a steady red light on the firmware section of dice. Any help would be appreciated
There is a driver for the Dice unit that you need to install as well. It should be on the disk.

The VIDA software is needed to say reset the SRS Control Module when replacing an airbag and impact sensor right? 2004 XC70, front right wheel hit curb, bent subframe, busted control arm end off, sway bar bent too, fender area bent. I can fix all the mechanical stuff, just have ZERO experience with the programming. I'm hoping if I get a new dash with passenger air bag, a new SRS control module perhaps, and new impact sensor the car will start? Just gives airbag fault. Not sure if seatbelt tensioner fired and needs replaced. Any advice much appreciated. Car only cost $1500. I like it a lot but can't spend much on repairs reprogramming.

Hi, I have doubt. After I bought RTI update for 2017 (from Ebay) i have update my GPS with most recent roads but after couple of days my camera stop work (when I got to reverse the screen goes black but with some ligh on back) can be the new update the camera function have stop? Should I try to update the camera program with this VIDA?
I wish that I could help you but I stopped working with Volvos in 2013, you might try going to a Volvo forum and ask there. The forums usually have some knowledgeable people there.
@@FarpointFarms My Volvo is XC90 from 2008. Did you remember someone faces the same problem until you stop working with them? For old Volvos, the information is pretty rare as the new Volvo is getting all internet update connection. Might be a good execute to give the wifey to swap to a recent one xDD

Yes, but they are hard to come by. It's the Volvo VCT. Robert DIY has one.
Thanks for your great insight. I'm bringing my XC70 '04 model back from the dead mostly as a hobby. Unfortunately I'm learning as I go and would probably have preferred a simpler car. Goin to get a must have Vida.
Here's a current gremlin you may have knowledge of. Changed out the driver window module and had it dealer calibrated to get it working. Now the radio will not work nor the passenger door nor the power (cigar lighter) plugs. The blog guys mention a commonality rooted in the CEM. A CEM fixer wants $329. What do you think?
Sounds about right, the CEM controls all the things like windows and other stuff so if you keep having these problems then maybe your CEM is faulty. You need Vida to check it.

@@NeuronioJr I bought a cheap ebay throttle body, put it on the the car and it was clear it needed a tune. Brought it to a local mechanic and was told that the throttle was no good, and said I needed to buy a brand new one. (not sure if he was lying or not) Ended up costing me over a thousand. Moral of the story is buying a throttle on EBay without the tuning software most likely won't fix the car.
@@LTS720 Did you were able to in the end have some fun with your S60? I got one and I will need to go through that journey of upgrades, but I am into the earlies stages currently..
@@NeuronioJr After that upgrade the car ran extremely well. The only problem I faced after that was the transmission slipping. Which is something you definitely have to be aware of becuz thats a very expensive fix. Early 2000 S60's I believe had some rough transmissions, (granted mine was at 300k miles). Its just something you should look out for. Make sure the trans fluid is not black and avoid driving too much in hot temps and heavy traffic to prolong transmission life. I had to sell my S60 but I really loved that car. Really solid and enjoyable to drive.

Why does this only work on Windows 7?? Kinda BS because everything is on 10 now. I have 4 laptops of various vintages but not one is Windows 7. So if I wanted to use this, I'd have to buy some cheap laptop in addition to the tool. I have a 2010 S80 V8...Can I buy one of the scan tools from FCP Euro, and will that work to reset the oil/maintenance light and program keys, etc?
The software was designed a long time back now and was originally setup for Windows XP. That's why it's still 32bit and so clunky. I would still recomend it as it's OEM and will always work better on that V8 than any other option. I have a $5.00 dollar goodwill computer setup as the computer to run this with and it works fine. No matter how fast the computer is, this program is sluggish. You just get used to it.
Many of the DVDs you buy include install a WnXP emulator so that you can run it on the current operating system.

@@JnJShiffler Yes, I have the newer software and emulator installed on an older laptop with Windows10 on it. You can use the VIDA without the DICE hooked up if you're just looking for detailed workshop manual information. With the DICE, you can connect to the car and access many of the configuration tools the dealer has. (You don't have 100% access, ie- you can't reprogram keys) You can usually find examples of the VIDA online for free download. I've only used the DICE once, but I use the Vida with some frequency.
@@thomasjj1976 The EWD download I purchased works fine on my Win10 work PC, after unzipping directly to my C drive. The VIDA gives me errors wanting Windows 7 PRO sadly. I selected another application in the package and it opens an older iExplorer page and wants me to login. I don't have any login info. Asks for my VCC CDSID to login online. Do you know if you can reset SRS control modules with VIDA?

I have no direct connection with any sellers. I bought mine from an Ebay seller in China. It came with the DICE and a version of VIDA that covers up to 2014 for less than $75.00 shipped. It does take about a month to get it though. Also you need to be sure your computer is running Windows 7 32bit Pro, no other version will work.

I’ve got an XC 90 it’s an 07 it’s a V-8 had a check engine light come on the other day lately it’s been running kind of rough I’m retired Audi tact so it was no problem to pull the plugs and coils and change them out I found one plug that was a little crusty or than the other seven so I thought good I put it back together it does run smooth smoother than it did but I still have a stumble between 1500 and 2000 at a slow reacceleration up a grade on the road or whatever check engine light came back onMy question is if I buy the vita dice box can I use it on my iPad I don’t have Wi-Fi I don’t need Wi-Fi where I live I can go online and buy things off of eBay and so on which is where I’ll buy the vita days by the way but I need to know before I buy this thing if I’m going to have to have it plugged in to a Wi-Fi system or whatever to use it thank you
It’s called VIDA and no you need a Windows 7 laptop and you will need internet to download VIDA. You can buy laptops already set up with it then you can just buy the DiCE unit and be up and running. iPad will not work at all.
Also your issue could be the head gasket , I believe those xc90 v8 may have had that issue I can’t remember to be honest.

Software updates can only come from a licenses copy of Vida and must be purchased through Volvo.

That's odd, they should be listed. I'll have to look at mine next time I have a car hooked up.

If memory serves, yes. Look at live data in the CEM and it should be listed as a pid.

thanks! if I may ask, you mentioning the wiring issue with your o2 sensor monitor, I currently have a problem with my o2 sensor monitor not want to set. I have completed several drive cycles but no luck with my o2 monitor which is required for Ca smog. any thoughts?
If yours is a 1996 to 1998 it never will set! There was a flaw and Volvo owners are no required to have the readiness set. I can't remember the details, but Volvo made a big mistake in programming, and the owners got to hold the bill.
I just replaced my door speakers (for now).
I plan on connecting the speakers to a new after market amplifier.
My question is, can I disable the car's Audio Control Module (AUD) with VIDA? Since I replaced the OEM receiver with a Kenwood, many of the Error Faults I get are audio related. My goal is to have an independent sound system.

It's telling you that you have a bulb out. Likely it's one of the tiny daytime parking lights. Check them all carefully and you'll see one of the small ones are out.

I'm having issues with my 2012 C30 D2. At the highway when the car does regeneration the car looses so much power that its almost un driveable

With the vida dice, can i test the stroke of the EGR and throttle body ? And can i re-calibrate it ?

My xc90 2004 T6 starts and stalls. Mechanics say it's an electrical issue possibly an immobiliser shutting off current after it starts. Another mechanic says it may be the alternator not keeping the battery charged to maintain the car on. I don't get an immobiliser message, I did for a second but could of been low battery causing codes to appear on the dash. I tried new battery already and 3-4 cranks seems to drain my battery. One mechanic said I just just take it to Volvo lol.. any thoughts on what it can be? Happened 2 days ago.
Note: car just turned off while driving, didn't over heat or anything, just shut off and it's been like this ever since.
While trying to figure out this one over the internet will be about impossible, I can rule out the immobilizer since the car is programmed not to cut off once in motion as a safety measure. Those year models had some serious issues with CAN networking, so my best guess is a bad wire or a faulty computer that is bringing the entire network down. A Volvo specialty shop, or the dealer is the really the best bet as this isn't a fix that most regular master techs could make. If it is indeed a CAN bus issue, good luck, I've spent many hours tracking those down at customer expense. Volvo's sure are finicky beasts!

So I come in peace and with news! I had scheduled a mechanic last night I forgot about. He scanned it with a odb2 scanner and it said turbo. He checked the tubes and on the bottom part it was loose. Tighten it and Bam! Fixed it. My car roars again! Lol
@@droveinternational1950 I had my volvo 2 weeks and the turbo shaft snapped.
Bought a new/rebuilt turbo cartridge from ebay $185, came from the UK all balanced to 140K rpm.
Dealers want thousands for a new turbo, don't need it. car runs great.

No, the 1990 to 1998 Volvo's the the older Volvo VST scan tool to read codes. A generic OBD-2 reader would also work.

If you have purchased the genuine version of VIDA, you'll need to buy the download for that trans. Then you can update it. These updated cost an average of $175, and you want to be 100% sure you get it right before you hit that button, or you just bricked a $1500 computer.

You don't need the dice unit to make that work. Just enter the vin

Ok, a couple of questions. 1 Can you update the Dim (replaced with a used one wrong mileage) mileage to what the actual mileage on the vehicle? 2. Can this be used to enable the factory foglights(my model didn't come equipped but wires were there)?
The mileage stays with the car so swapping the Dim won’t change the mileage.
@@Alexander_l322 this is not accurate I have swapped several dims and the dim shows it's mileage not my cars actual miles.
Steve IsHere so in one month you’ve swapped several? Ok Steve. Ask anyone, the mileage stays with the car and is read by the TFT display. You should program the TFT in vdash and pay for the software.

No. After 2014 they changed the software so you would need the full web version of Vida to work on that car.

Can't find a DICE for less that 150 bucks.
I bought mine on ebay, but it's been a few years.
Instead of DICE buy a vcx nano, it's cheaper too (40 usd). It works fine with Vida and is more reliable. There are many DICEs which do not work at all or only partially. Also, are more expensive.
