Jobs on BC's Sunshine Coast: Commuting, self-employment, and remote work (2021)

  • Employment options on BC's Sunshine Coast include service jobs, trades, self-employment, and remote work. 2021 continues the trend we saw last year when employees jumped at the chance to start working from home and our local real estate market is booming because of it. Building trades on the Sunshine Coast also seem to be in perpetual short supply so that's another strong option for those wanting to work locally.
In a normal world, tourism is a HUGE part of our local economy. Servers, cashiers/clerks, tour guides, etc are vitally important to locally owned businesses but these jobs aren't typically high paying. But because our housing prices are so high, it's difficult for people to earn a living doing these kinds of jobs. It’s a Catch-22: employers need employees that will work for a certain wage but working for that wage means employees can’t afford to live here.
Aside from a local job or remote work, another option is to work a job in Vancouver and to commute using the ferry. The benefit here is that Vancouver has a wider assortment of work that pays higher wages. The downside is the expense and wasted time of riding the ferry.
If none of those options sound appealing, you could try your hand at self-employment. In theory, you get to set your own hours and choose your own clients. But in practice, it usually means more work (at least until you’ve established yourself) and long hours. This is the path we chose and it’s been rewarding but it’s a lot of work. At the end of a long day, we often only have enough energy to grab the remote and watch TV for an hour before hitting the sheets. Not an ideal work/life balance.
But these are some of the choices you need to make when you’re looking at relocating to BC’s Sunshine Coast. Whether you’re working for yourself, for someone else, or you’re doing remote work for an employer that’s far away, you may find the climate and lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast are worth the sacrifice.

I would agree, there are a lot of opportunities in trades. My husband runs an electrical company and we need more skilled electricians currently. Anyone reading this comment can contact me if they are currently an electrician needing work on the Sunshine Coast.

It's pretty clear for people make the decision about moving.
    Thanks.

Hi! Just found your channel today and have been binging the videos! Love the content and useful info that is not typically provided. I am intrigued by the comment regarding the lack of auto body shops. I think the video was from April 2021, can you give update on this topic? Also curious on your thoughts on an option to live short term in a van as we are moving from East Coast. So the plan would be to sell house, buy kitted van and travel to west coast to set up new life. Where the housing and rental market is pretty sketchy and tough to navigate, esp from afar, I thought this might be a good option? Thoughts?

I (thankfully) haven't needed a body shop since we posted that video so I don't have recent, first-hand knowledge on wait times to get a car fixed. You could do some "secret shopping" and call local shops and say you had an oopsie and ask how far in advance they're booking. Over Christmas, we needed some mechanical work (not body work) done on our car and the repair shop was booking two weeks in advance.
Renting in Gibsons prior to arriving was tough. The rental market was (and still is) very tight. As such, landlords had their pick of a number of applicants and opted to deal with locals as opposed to out-of-towners. We eventually lucked out and found someone that would rent to us without meeting in person (we did chat and take a property tour via Skype). So yes, being here in person to rent would like simplify the situation.
Compared to most of Canada, buying a home is super expensive. In its latest stats package, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver shows the benchmark price for a detached home on the Sunshine Coast to be $912,000. We wouldn't be able to buy now if we were just getting into the market. We produce a monthly podcast with Realtor Tony Browton where he provides a monthly market update. You can watch Tony's predictions for 2023 here: czcams.com/video/KnvMpfNPsPg/video.html
Van life isn't unheard of on the Sunshine Coast. It's not permitted (except in campsites) but our housing situation is so tight that I think local governments more or less turn a blind eye.
Hopefully that helps! Thanks for watching and for the comment. 😀

Great video, thanks! Curious if there is a need for educators and special education assistants? Seems like lots of families are moving to the Coast!

I feel like we need everything! Yes, lots of families moving to the Sunshine Coast but we're unfortunately running out of places for them to live. Something we've heard more than once is, "I had a great job lined up but just couldn't find/couldn't afford housing." Getting the job is the easy part - the real trick is having a place to live.

I also been noticing that a lot of people also moving into there RV’s or vans or schools bus made into RV’s they just can’t afford the cost of living. Rent is to high, mortgages are thru the roof. Unless you have millions or a very rich parents. It’s just about impossible to find anything. The cheapest I found was a 1 bedroom. that’s it. For $650, that was at half moon bay, if your working in Gibson, that’s a drive ever day. So I’m seeing people doing what they got to do. To make it work! Also you 2 are great!!! Keep up the good work! Peace

You're right. We feel like we got in just under the wire. If someone was planning on relocating to the Sunshine Coast in 2021 (or beyond), they'd need to be well financed. Even most of our vacant lots are worth more than a family home on the prairies. Very difficult time to try and break into the market (either as a tenant or an owner).

@@LiveontheSunshineCoast you know, like I said , I am coming out that to, I’m going to look around and see what Vancouver island and surrounding area’s have to offer, I’m to old to mortgage again, so if anything, rent is my opinion. Or do what others are doing. It kinda reminds me of the first settlers that came over this way . With very little, covered wagons , kinda like gypsy style life. A wanderer, nomad, minimalist life all in one package. Ha sounds crazy, but there doing. Thanks again! You 2 have a wonderful week. Stay warm. Starting to snow in this area! -12 this morning and that the tip of the cold iceberg. Hurry end of October.

hello i am more curious about the commute within the sunshine coast (sechelt area specifically). how good is the public transport (if any)? is it viable to live in that area without a car?

    • @LiveontheSunshineCoast
      @LiveontheSunshineCoast  Před 2 lety

There's good and bad about transit on the Sunshine Coast.
GOOD: We've lived in small communities in the past that had zero buses/taxis/etc. For a region with such low population density that's spread over a (relatively) big geographic area, we're fortunate to have public transit at all.
BAD: If your frame of reference for public transit is a large city, you might find transit on the Sunshine Coast to be lacking. While busses run on a regular schedule, their frequency is lower than in a city.
You could live without a car but you'd have to plan accordingly. If I were moving to the Sunshine Coast without a car, I'd want to be in Gibsons or Sechelt, and near a transit stop or near shopping (or both).
We had a segment in another video about whether or not you need a car on the Sunshine Coast. It's the first question in our FAQ video: czcams.com/video/FACH-VL1vBQ/video.html

👍 I think lots of places hiring from restaurants to construction. Just need to find a place to stay if you don't have one yet. And double check your budget so that your income will support your living expenses. All the best with your adventures. 😀

Is there any demand for dance and exercise instructors? I teach dance, Pilates and Essentrics

That's not really an industry I'm familiar with so I'm not sure what the current demand would be. However, I know that our dance studios are highly regarded and something Sunshine Coasters are proud of. Try reaching out to them directly and maybe they can help you gauge demand.
