  • Tesla in India: Global Times Launches a Tirade Against India | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Electric car maker Tesla is looking to make an entry into the Indian market later this year. Tesla’s Founder Elon Musk is expected to visit India soon - and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Musk is expected to announce Tesla’s plans for investment in India during the visit. Ahead of the announcement, Chinese mouthpiece - the Global Times has published an assessment about India’s EV market - terming it “immature” and “underdeveloped”. The claims made by the Global Times have received heavy criticism online. Palki Sharma tells you more.

No Indian company ever said that China was bad, they only looked forward to compete, something that China forgot in it's way of establishing monopolies backed by corruption and links to the Communist Party instead of functioning purely upon ROI, profit and non-political operations.

Have you seen the new Xiaomi car? It is miles ahead of Tesla Model 3. Without US blocking Chinese cars into US market, Chinese cars would have dominated the US market. So Chinese really don't care too much about Tesla building whatever it will build in Indians because they know 1) it is empty worlds because Tesla knows the fate of GM, Ford and Xiaomi, and many other foreign investors through the years. Graveyard of Foreign Investment is no joke. 2) Tesla could not even catch up to the progress of Chinese EV car makers. THEY ARE CRAZY in offering feature and low prices. 3) It will be years before Tesla could build anything, even if it really invests in India. By then, no one cares. EV car market is all done.

@@allshorts3324 Tesla isn't highly integrated EV maker unlike BYD. BYD can supply nearly everything in house so BYD got more more control on their supply chain. While Tesla is very much like Apple. Till this day Tesla very much outsourced their battery part to CATL, Panasonic. Tesla doesn't have semiconductor manufacturing plant like BYD. Again they will sourced their semiconductor from third party or manufacture their own designed chip using foreign foundry. It's more complicated to establish Tesla supply chain in india compare to BYD that operates like a one stop solution centre. That's why BYD was confident in it's investment in india.

I also realized that Indians kind of think like Americans in the sense I found that Indians also had a sense of practical thinking not as much as Americans but kind of approaching and showing tendency to adapt quickly. The Chinese students were good students but never were able to communicate their ideas in Engineering sense.
Well China has got the benefit of US companies there for a long time. Give India this same support that China Got India will be ahead on everything when compared to China. Having lived in USA for long I have realized what has made USA successful is their discipline to implement all theory into a practical application. Although you have been hearing a lot of negative press on Boeing, but if I look at what it took to manufacture a composite plane needs a lots of congratulation.
With 3 million parts in a commercial airplane Boeing must have a tremendous responsibility to make sure everything works.
Yes I am not excusing Boeing for 737 Max, but hind sight is always better then foresight. Mistakes happen. Shortcuts lead to disaster.
You see it has taken China so many years to make a commercial plane.
I would not deoend on China to make anything for me if I was in charge of USA. I would diversify out of China. India, Japan, Singapore , Australia, are few places to go to.

EVs are a scam , in the whole world second hand EV prices have dropped by over 50%, within 1 year of buying in US Europe and China, this shows the quality of cars, the battery is not suitable for cars , its quality drops drastically within 1-2 years, it is heavier because of the battery pack , which reduces range, and also the tires wear out much faster, in China and US , EVs are lying unsold in dumpyard and shipyard , both Tesla and BYD now wants to dump these cars in India

This journalist should stop focusing so much about China because she gives the impression to her audience that people in China are overly concerned about India's development or companies investing in India. That is not the case, Chinese leaders and citizens think about their own internal situation shortcomings. The Global Times is just a journal with some journalists expressing their opinions, most of the time these are not even scholars or economists. Chinese officials and politicians never talk about India and even foreign countries for that matter.
Secondly, I feel like there's a sentiment in India very common with western behaviors which is the zero-sum game. A win for India must be a loss for China. I'm afraid the reality is a little bit more complex. Let's take Chips as an example, recently many chips companies from Japan, US, Taiwan announced their intentions to manufacture chips in India which is obviously good for them. However Ms. Sharma and others often try to frame it as the evidence that foreign companies are choosing India at the detriment of China. In this specific case, Chinese companies are followers and do not have the best technologies. The US restrictions are spurring the development of an independent chip ecosystem in China. If China achieves it, no matter what these foreign companies chooses to do, it is pretty clear that this will not threaten the development of their semiconductor industry in the future while of course India will benefit on its part from the manufacturing of chips in their country. Thus it is not a zero-sum game. I could take a multitude of examples to illustrate my point. At the end of the day, the focus of every country should be to be masters of their own destiny. No matter what you think about Chinese leaders, this is their fight. May India do the same and I'm sure the world will be in a much better place.

Many people in the US and Europe said similar things about China during the 1980s and 1990s when Chinese leaders like Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin were pursuing the 'Reform and Opening-Up' agenda.
People claimed that China didn't have adequate infrastructure and didn't have the human capital needed to spur strong economic growth. People also said that China had too much corruption and that this would stunt their ability to grow.
History has shown that these assumptions about China during the 1980s and 1990s were flawed. China was able to prove these assumptions wrong and instead rapidly expand their economy, especially in areas of manufacturing and heavy industry.
Now, judging from the Global Times commentary on Tesla in India, it seems that parts of China's media ecosystem are making similar negative assumptions about India. "India doesn't have good supply chains, India doesn't have good infrastructure, etc, etc".
It was wrong to make negative assumptions about China's economy during the 1980s and 1990s. Judging from India's current strong growth rates, I'd assume that it's wrong to make negative assumptions about India's economy too.

I hate to admit but what is being said by global times is so true. Indian roads are not equipped for EV cars due to poor infrastructure. India should invest more on MRTS, High Speed trains which will help transport more people and save the environment and create less pollution

@@user-co2lw5vb4q If Tesla wants to invest in India then good, but that does not mean what Global Time said about India is not true. India lacks good road infrastructure, it needs to work on generating more electricity that will be needed for industries like EV or semiconductors (TSMC, the leader in semiconductor in TW is one of the heaviest user of electricity and water in TW, they have stop building a new plant because lack of water and electricity). Water is another resource that India lacks as well. And there is also the fact that most of the supply chain is in China, if you look at Apple most of the parts in an iPhone regardless where they are assembled most part come from China. We all know which country that is supplying the battery and battery component in EV, if you want to know, you can go watch Think School. The other aspect that is not mentioned here is the work force composition of India compare to China. China has a skilled workforce of 200 million with 60 million of these considered as highly skilled. India has a severe skill shortage in its labor market, and that issue has not been fixed and the situation is not getting better but worse. Why do you think there is more severe unemployment issue for the young Indian right now when they make up 83% of the unemployed people. This is not what GT said but what is in the Indian media
