Hi! I didn't really know what to make of the ending of 'A Quiet Place: Day One'. I was very critical about it in the original upload of this video. Which generated A LOT of discussion! I'm still grappling with it. And I'm not too happy with how I interacted with the issue. It's more nuanced and complex than I first thought. So for now I have edited out that segment. And I will do a deep dive into all the films if 'A Quiet Place Part III' comes out :)

She was on her last days , without her pain medication. She was able to save someone , but she couldn’t be saved,it was either die suffering a slow and painful death or go out on her on terms , either way she dies. I love that ending it made sense. She had already come to terms with her death at the beginning of the movie.

Her death did not make me sad. She was already dying, and she died on her terms in this movie instead of wasting away and possibly being in pain again if a supply of pain medication wasn't procured. I don’t agree with euthanasia for people who are not actually terminally ill, but then you have people who don't even think hospice, and the choice of withdrawing treatment are OK for a dying person. Hospice isn't to hasten death, and some people chose quality of life and comfort measures over being violently ill from chemo that may only add months to their lifespan.

Sam calming Eric and his tears and anxiety before she tells him to take good care of her cat and to RUN before she takes steps to draw the Aliens away brought me to that chest tightening feeling and big tears rolling down my face effect as did every other Quiet Place film has and I'm hoping a Quiet Place #4 in Washington DC or Roswell.

I loved your whole movie review the catching the meanings of all the connections each movie had until your synopsis of the end. The title Day One does end well with Eric and the ship leaving and a future for the world and hopefully an opportunity to make Quiet Place #4 (🎉). Back to Sam choosing her joy and the music (ears buds with Harvest Moon playing for ( I'll call him John) and Evelyn enjoying their time of love in anarchy, another connection). I just see the connection with John giving up his life for his children. The Daughter (I'll call her Sara since I can't remember her name) taking many chances with her life for the sake of everyone's future. Then Sam in her own way pulling the plug on herself but how many other people do we not see that are escaping the Aliens while Sam plays her Father's music leading to her death- there could be another movie where a military soldier is given the opportunity to run and make his way back to his military base (perhaps in Washington) and the big show where perhaps the soldiers not believed and it's up to him and his crew to start a huge United States saving scenario and then Quiet Place #5 it will become global defense against the Aliens.🎉

To me her death was sad but it was because I had come to be so attached to her and somehow hope that there was a way she could keep surviving, I was happy in the end that she got to go out on her own terms instead of struggling without pain meds in a world that just didn’t have the capabilities to care for her

Thank you for your comment! And I understand if you disagree with this. I can't begin to imagine what it's like to live with that sort of pain in such dire circumstances. And it is a sensitive topic with a lot of complexities. But I think that even so, for the film to say that the only thing left for her to do is take her life... I think that's a pretty bleak outlook on life which undermines the first two movies. For me, the real problem is that the film frames it as a 'triumphant' ending. And I would never want to see someone's suicide as something 'triumphant'.

I believe the director and writer have already established the theme of "Sacrifice" in the first part. When Lee took his life to protect his children, it resonated with Emily Blunt's line: "Who are we if we can't protect them? We have to protect them." This theme continues in the third installment (a prequel), where Lupita sacrifices herself so that Joseph Quinn can stay alive. Lupita's life and soul, symbolized by Frodo, are entrusted to Joseph Quinn. Additionally, if Lupita had tried to reach the island mentioned in the second part of the film, there wouldn't have been any nearby dispensary to treat her cancer.

Don’t conflate the message of Day One with the message of the other stories. She died because of her cancer, not because of her loneliness or lack of hope. Many many many people who suffer terminal illness want to have control and happiness in their lives. Your political and philosophical views on the right to death are your own but they’re not the moral standing for everyone. She outlived the death angels and chose to walk into the inevitable on HER terms and without pain and without suffering. That’s is beautiful. It’s not suicide because of depression or hopelessness as many of us who are suicidal feel. She just wanted a happy day, and she was already dying. She got her perfect day and she got her happy day.
Man this frustrates me. The right to a good death should be allowed but people’s personal beliefs are getting in the way of that and allowing suffering people to suffer more and more. Life wasn’t a choice but if it’s between a good death or a painful life, I’ll go for my pizza and smile to the end.

It wasn’t that her life wasn’t worth living, she wasn’t depressed. She was in complete and utter happiness. Everyone she loved was safe, bc of her. Unless you’ve been in complete physical pain with no one (for her an entire city) by your side is one of the worse experiences.

I think this is more on the message of 'living'. Sam wants Eric to 'live' not just survive. The hospice was brutal on her mentally, all she wants is a slice of pizza and none of them can give it to her. In the hospice, she wants to die, she was waiting and slated for death. She had no choice in where she can go or what she can eat or do, she had no dignity and no friends. In a way, she was already dead, both physically and mentally, she was a ghost throughout the film. After meeting Eric, she truly lived, hence the note, and enjoyed living, even wanting to laugh at Eric's magic trick. She had a choice, in reading, in going to Harlem, in saving Eric, giving Eric the means and will to live, in saving Frodo. In the end, she lived through being bait and it was probably the best days of her post-cancer. My mom was stuck in the recovery ward for cancer treatment for 3 weeks and she said she would rather forgo life-saving treatment than stay there another day, and I think there is something about living and surviving that the film wants to tell us.

I just came back from the Cinema ...... I really enjoyed this movie, it has a very bittersweet sad ending.

  • @jfarmer911
    @jfarmer911 Před měsícem +4

The dignity was her choosing her death as a moment in which she was not in pain before her meds run out, walking along her favorite streets, and listening to her favorite music. She also was able to arrive at greater purpose by her being able to save Eric and provide him the chance to live the full life she would never get the chance to due to her cancer. She had been stuck in the other stages of grief over her own life, namely anger at that point, but she was able to finally reach the acceptance stage and let go of the anger. This level of acceptance partially comes from how nurturing Eric is towards her in helping her feel joy again, which reminds her that she had indeed had a joyful life before she got cancer.
I mean, obviously, suicide is no trivial matter, but I think we can still appreciate the nuance of suicide by self-sacrifice and the case of a character like Sam in which the ultimate act of power is to at least choose when and how to die as opposed to just wasting away with no control, hope, or sense of comfort.

I completely disagree with your understanding of the ending. Yes, she did choose to end her life right there but she went out on HER OWN TERMS.
She already felt like she lived her life ie ate pizza, made a new friend and saved him and her cat to live a better life safe. She even thanked Eric for helping her with her little quest and made her feel alive again. She already faced her demons and accomplished all she needed to accomplish. AND THAT'S THE THING. She already did so much leading to her own end of days and found an appreciation of life, not a newfound appreciation for life. She knew she was terminally ill in the first place and chose to go out on her own terms.
She helped someone live while feeling like she already lived hers

There is a reason why people get DNRs and Living Wills/ advance directives.

You think of her discovering other survivors and helping them to the boat as if she has strength for that or would she a burden to them? Should they risk their lives trying to find medicine for her and then she would live with that guilt if they died? Freedom is about choices and options and yes, that includes belief systems and what people do with their own lives. In the end she accepted death and she died with dignity. Maybe the message is about accepting other people's freedom to make the best choices for their own life. Your insights into a movie’s deeper meaning are meticulous, meaningful, and entertaining. I’m shocked, then, that you’ve missed the point of Sam’s suicide so unreservedly.
You dismiss her terminal illness as if it’s incidental to her final act. To the contrary, her imminent death is pivotal. Uncharacteristically, you overlooked Sam’s poem -- the title of which, if I’m not mistaken, is “I’m Bad at Math.” The text reveals that she is out of time:
“You said one to two years and it has been two.
You said four to six months and it has been six.
You said seven to eight weeks and it has been eight.
You said nine to ten days and it has been ten.
You said it would hurt and it does.”
Sam said she saw her father die the very way that she is dying. She knows it’s over. Her dying wish, her kick-the-bucket list, is to go “home.” Her wish granted, her painful death at hand, she takes control. She writes her final chapter. She cheats the Grim Reaper, as well as the Death Angels, from determining when her last ties are severed.
In short, she cheats at math.
Many people -- nearly all of whom have not endured chronic, excruciating pain and imminent death -- share your opinion on suicide. That opinion, in my view, is both presumptuous and shortsighted.
Yes, it takes courage to fight to the very end. However, it takes even more courage to choose when the end begins.

Like many other people in the comments, I was with you until your critic of the ending. I loved that she went out on her own terms. She was able to reconnect with warm childhood memories, make a friend, rehome Fordo, and reached her “final destination” in a way (Jazz bar/pizza.) She’s also been mourning her life for over two years, according to her poem. I think this was a better death for her, rather than withering away in pain for however many days or weeks completely alone with the inability to take care of herself.
Regardless of our complete opposite opinions with the ending, I absolutely loved your video essay. This film was incredible, so full of heart, humanity, and the true kindness of strangers. Your video was so touching and conveyed all the feels as well. I also never noticed the beach text from the calendar, totally blew my mind!
Sidenote: I understand most people go into apocalypse horror films expecting mindless action and military ppl blowing up the “enemy”, but there’s an endless supply of those types of films. No hate on them, sometimes you want that kinda thing but there should also be space for emotional/character driven horror films like A Quiet Place Day One. I am also the target audience for artsy, emotional, and inner drama kind of stuff…so having an apocalyptic backdrop was right up my alley. IMHO this latest film is the best one so far. ❤

My husband and I loved the ending. We were sad ofc, but to see her choosing how she died was exactly what we were hoping for. I’ve volunteered in hospice before, and there were young patients like Sam who had horrible illnesses and needed 24/7 care. It was awful to see them struggle. I’m so glad we see Sam complete at her end, rather than a sudden death.

I don't know that she was reeeaally READY to go. She was going anyway, with potentially days to hours left. ;)
She enjoyed the last memories of she and her dad in the pizzeria while looking at the photo of them IN the restaurant together.
Embraced the emotions and seemingly felt more at ease with her decisions.
She'd already exceeded the doctors life estimates, but it was very clear that her time was up and particularly under the severity of the circumstances. A full fledged Apocalypse. ;) Not the greatest living conditions for even the healthiest of citizens. Lol
Sam was on her last leg.
She was barely getting by due to the kindness of Eric getting her the pain medication, which enabled her to help HIM to live. ;)
She came to terms with her end. Made more peace with it.
I'd venture to bet that if she wasn't terminally ill, she would've chosen Life.

I understand your point, but I think that this movie is truly a beautiful and faithful depiction of humanity. I don’t think the ending undermines the message of the other two films (which are also awesome). It is a different story about different humans. It just happens in the same world. I believe the film contains some extremely moving scenes that make it a celebration of life and humanity.

I APPRECIATE this video so much, and what you said about being in a society that allows euthanasia. As a person who has a mental disorder being disabled is difficult. And i get so sick sometimes its so painful even though i dont have a terminal illness. Mental illness can be as painful as other conditions. I wish we had a cure for mental illness but we dont. So with the option of pain and suffering or death, i understand why people choose death. At this moment thats just the way it is. When a person is suffering so much it doesnt feel like your choosing to give up, but that you are choose to be at peace. Even as a dying person Sam's insticnt was to survive in most of the movie. Its in us to want to live. But its when we are suffering so severely in pain albeit physical or mental for some humans they choose peace. But thank you for bringing this to some many peoples attention. I wish we lived in a society that tried to help those in pain more to avoid the start of euthanasia. But i understand it.

Then why was this movie called quiet place? If you're trying to tell the story of how weird aliens were sent/arrived and just started wiping out all indigenous life, why focus so hard on just the lady wanting to get pizza? She didn't even want to go initially. Then she is so careful to not get killed, but then decides to go on a suicide mission.
The stories messaging was all over the place and took any real human responses to a situation like that away from the main cast. On that note the acting was the only thing that kept me from walking out of the theatre. Props to the actors/actresses. It was well acted, but a quiet place was a thriller not just a horror. When you make a monster that hid in water to hunt it's prey in the original, drown in 5 secs when underwater in the prequel I don't find any suspensr in that.
There are so many plot holes in the movie that it's bonkers. Just not putting folley in to make it sound quieter in the theater, while ignore the fact that they are walking on rubble is dumb. They just gain perfect stealth somehow. Also how did the choppers already know about the "be quiet" thing? They explain nothing that first movie didn't already show. That's the other thing. They relied on telling us stuff instead of showing us stuff. Also, as a cat owner for 35 years I have never had a cat be that calm or quiet unless they were sleeping. It was not believable from the start.

The ending wasnt as bad as you think. She actively has cancer. She is actively dying and has barely any days left without treatment. Cancer pain is the worst pain that one can experience. I know because i have seen patients and family members who have sufferend from end stage cancer. I ask the question of pain to gain an understanding of this disease process and end of life process. Its unanimous that the pain is horrible. Her cancer is not in her hands. She has no control of this process. The fact that she found her old home, her music box and headphones and is appreciative of what life offered her even in those last few moments, made her happy and most importantly accept the fact that she is dying. The aspect of her unplugging and allowing the music to blast is the equivalence of providing permission to be placed on hospice and provided with comfort care which normally includes pain relief. The death angel is a swift death. In reality, this is day one. We are meant to feel hopeless.

Some disaster movies , in specific cases, deal with fears or anxiety of our time bringing normal people to challenge these obstacles."Natural disasters bring the worst of people" said Martin Landau character from Earthquake (1974) , in this case also the best. I really enjoyed the movie, the first two films were well crafted and thrilling to watch. The ending scene surprised me but in a more positive view despite Its contradiction of the meaning of life showed in the previous movies , I think there was some kind of nihilist concept viewed by the characters of this universe due to the beginning of the apocalypse , maybe that same concept in Sarnosky's head will be completely wiped out by the events of the original two movies and It was created for that pourpose..or more plausible option he ran out ideas for the finale😂😂😂😂. Besides the ither hospice patients who were elderly and who blew up in the buss are never mentioned by you making you very hypocritical so elderly are of no value? While a dying younger women must fight for her . Righr?
She was in the deepest of diapair at the start...yet her can and male companion gave her hope and renewed her spirit. She was smiling when she made noise. As another poster mentioned her pain patch was limited and with out it every muscle in her body was on fire and she couldnt move.
