  • It’s no secret that Omega has been chasing Rolex’s success for near on half a century. It must be galling for the head honchos at the Swatch Group to see the five-pronged crown take all the glory with such ease, especially since, back when Rolex was just a notion in the mind of young German Hans Wilsdorf, Omega was the force to be reckoned with. But those halcyon days at the turn of the 20th century were not to last for Omega, its dominance a withered husk by the dawn of the next. But the fight’s not over, not yet, thanks to this: the 2018 Seamaster 300M.

    Interestingly enough, when one wears a Rolex, people's instant reaction tends to be wondering whether it's real or not. Compared to seeing someone wearing an Omega, people tend to always be impressed. That's based on my personal observation.

    People are going into Rolex AD's in the hopes of getting their hands on a Submariner, but they can't even get on Rolex's long ass waiting list. So what happens next? In so many cases, I've heard of those same people walking straight to their nearest Omega AD's and walking back out 20 minutes later with a brand new Seamaster or Planet Ocean. Rolex are missing out on so many sales that are going to Omega instead, but Rolex don't care. Rolex could expand their manufacturing processes and make more watches per year, but no, that's not their philosophy. They think they're above that. They'd rather keep their supply limited so that their watches remain in the realm of desirability for most and their retail prices remain exaggeratedly high. Rolex are playing the supply and demand game in order to influence the worth of their watches. It's the same game the diamond industry have been using for the last century to keep the price of their diamonds exaggeratedly high. It's greedy, it's immoral and I'm not playing their filthy little game, they can get fucked. I'd rather walk into an Omega boutique with the freedom to choose any model or style I want and be able to walk out with it that very same day, instead of pining for an overpriced Rolex watch that is almost impossible to buy new.

    • @dillonkoch72
      @dillonkoch72 Před 3 lety +21

      You would be a fool to think they are in short supply. They do this to create demand. Patek Philip is exclusive only making 15 watches a year by hand. Rolex comes off an assemble line just like a car.

    • @gregbrettharrenpersonal3632
      @gregbrettharrenpersonal3632 Před 3 lety +8

      Omega's are fantastic pieces but at the end of the day, you're walking out wearing a mid-tier Omega. I realize there is a Rolex bubble right now but you're not entirely correct, they're not able to produce as many watches this past year due to covid. Many of their factory workers travel from France that has very strict guidelines. AD's are not getting shipments. Rolex is also heading in the direction of Patek and AP, they're going for the higher end clientele and I don't doubt in the next few years they are going to be Rolex boutiques only and no more AD's. They have all the money in the world and can do as they please. They are looking to appeal to higher end clientele with their finer watches and they are spending more time developing these pieces and it takes something like a year to hand make each Rolex watch. So they really don't care about people buying Omega and they honestly want people looking to spend $5k to buy an Omega. I think they're tired of being the classic watch that every husband gets on his 40th birthday or or if a salesman has a good year. I believe they're looking into the future of their brand and want to a more luxury brand. I personally love the new Omega Seamaster but my wrist is too small for a 42mm case. I currently wear a Rolex Datejust 41 and have a gold Rolex Day-Date 40-both purchased before this pandemic and inflated prices. Just a different perspective that comes from speaking with many AD's and I've been in the watch community for many years so I do know a thing or two about Rolex. At the end of the day, if you wear an Omega, another guy watch enthusiast may notice. You wear a classic Rolex and everyone knows what you're wearing and it is a statement piece if that's what you're going for. I feel proud and it's rewarding every time I wear my Rolex's because I know I worked super hard for them and I feel like a million bucks. Rolex's have have also become a hobby for me, there are so many forums to talk to other owners about current, vintage and new pieces. All in all, Omega is like a Tag-they have stepped up their game with this watch and the new Speedmasters but they're still mid-tier watches like Tag and I don't think they'll ever have the appeal of Rolex. That all being said, you shouldn't buy a watch to impress others, buy what you love. But I feel like you want a Rolex-there are plenty of USA AD brand new Rolex models at MSRP (many stainless sport models are priced crazy high now but look at the Datejust 41) and get the watch you want that you will pass down to your kids and get compliments on everyday. Best of luck, whatever you purchase, wear in good health and happiness.

    I own both the ceramic submariner and the new seamaster white dial with both a rubber strap and steel bracelet. My only issues with the seamaster is that the bezel is slightly more difficult to turn, as the outer edges are smooth and lack good grip, however the tradeoff is the aesthetically pleasing smooth finish. My other issue is the buckle on the rubber strap, it drives me nuts as I take my watch off and on frequently, I would have much preferred a folding clasp. Putting these relatively small issues aside, when I hold these watches one in each hand, it really is hard to pick a favourite. As the gentleman in the video mentioned, the attention to detail and finishing on both watches is immaculate. When it comes down to it, if you're a true connoisseur of watches and quality is what you're looking for, then its a coin-toss. If brand recognition is what you're looking for, then Rolex may be the way to go. I should mention though, in 19 years of wearing Rolexes, I've only ever had 4 people notice and comment on them, so your purchase should really be for your own appreciation, not others.

I think Omega's only issue is too many so called limited editions, product variations which ultimately is a branding issue. The simple magical success of Rolex is just slow & steady evolution of a long product line, lets face it at 30 feet a Submariner of the 60s looks like a Submariner of today, its all about the details. Nothing crazy just traditional classic historical styling & of coarse complete control of availability. Everyone one wants what they have a hard time finding. The new Seamaster is a real bargain by any standard.

      One of the most on-target comments, Scott. And my first Swiss was Omega, so I care for the brand. @512bb Před 5 lety +2

      Wahl Larry - Thank you for your kind words, I agree with your thoughts. Perception becomes reality even if the facts don't support it. Rolex & Patek Philippe just always seem to make all the right business decisions that keep them at the top even though there are so many incredible watch brands available. I kind of have a love / hate relationship with Rolex as they make it so hard for even their loyal long time customers the ability to buy many in demand models that command such premiums on the secondary market, that's the real conundrum. I will tell you if I had hit that 1.5 billion dollar lottery I probably would have never worried about value retention ever again so probably wouldn't be heartbroken if I never bought another Rolex. Two examples from Omega that I would take in a heartbeat over the Rolex Deepsea or Daytona would be the Ploprof 1200 & the Speedmaster Moonphase Aventurine dial, those watches are simply amazing but for what ever reason just don't retain the value, none the less one day I will find a way to break the Rolex habit & add those beauties to my collection, I just hope I do it before everyone else figures it out, all the best Larry!

Now it’s just hilarious with the prices and the fake wait lists. A submariner is not watch that deserves a waiting list especially with a new seamaster being sold at half the price new! I've tried so hard for years to agree with the design of the SMP but could never quite reach the point where I'd want to one day drop the money on one. That has absolutely changed with this refresh and has destroyed any personal aspirations of a Submariner when you line them up next to each other.
    So many people complain about the He escape valve, which is of course subjective, but I think its sized brilliantly and the conical shape looks fantastic and mutes the size a bit. The enamel wave dial is out of this world and the finishing on the lugs should be the envy of most watches North of £5, 000. There is just something about the omega that gives it the most wrist time. Partly because I tend to baby the Rolex a bit more, and the Omega just feels more robust, and more like an everyday beater. Love them both, but the details in the Omega are better, IMHO.

Was trying to get GMT II with no luck at all and then Omega came to my mind and I am not disappointed. Its coaxial movement, anti-magnetism (15 times better than Milguass), METAS certification, micro-adjustment clasp, see-through case back, adding back wave design on the ceramic dial and it is only at less than 1/3 the price of a new submariner (not listed price I am talking about). The packaging is also very nice. One can go to Omega website to check the test results of the watch bought. I think it is good value for money.

      I have a 9900 PO chronograph and love it. I've been diving for 35 years and would never dive with it, not because I think it couldn't handle it, but because I would be afraid of losing it. Lets face it, the HEV is useless. No professional diver would use it when they could use a $300 dive computer instead. But that's not the point. We marvel in the craftsmanship of these watches. Otherwise, we would be all be wearing Casio G-Shocks, much more accurate and practical watches. I don't notice the HEV, will never need to use it even while diving, but like the idea that someone designed it for a purpose and that it it's there. I'm married but don't wear a ring. I certainly would never wear a necklace or bracelet. Lets face it, mechanical watches are jewelry for men, pure luxury, and are otherwise useless except for the fact that they are a reminder of a time when this type of craftsmanship was a marvel. As of yet, no one has ever commented on my watch; it's usually under my shirt sleeve. But I know it's there...oh, and it also tells me the time. Good enough for me.

    I have a Rolex Submariner and Omega Planet Ocean 600M with 8900 movement. Still like this beautify Seamaster 300M. For the bezel, Omega's liquid metal is a lot nicer than Rolex's. For the dial, the Zirconium dial is such a superb material that is looking great but also a stable material without the risk of color fading. From my personal daily use of Rolex Submariner and Omega Planet Ocean 600M, I am so surprised to see Omega is so much more accurate than Rolex. My Omega's accuracy is up to +1 second in 3 months, where as for my Rolex it's off by at least 15 seconds per month. For look and feel, I love both Rolex and Omega, but love Omega a bit more for it's transparent case back. For daily usage, I love a lot more Omega's spot-on accuracy. The new Master Chronometer movements from Omega is probably Rolex needs to catch up.

    I've never owned a Rolex, but have been an avid Omega fan since the mid-1980s. My collection currently includes a Manhattan Constellation (my first Omega), a 50th Anniversary Seamaster GMT, a gold-and-stainless Seamaster 300 Chronograph, a quartz Seamaster 300, a mechanical Seamaster 300 Chronograph, a 45mm Seamaster Planet Ocean Date, and a 45mm Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph. My favorite among these tends to vary, but recently I've tended to favor the 45mm Planet Ocean Date model. I tend to baby my watches, using a "disposable" plastic watch whenever I do chores around the house, so they're all still like new. Omega revising their models so frequently is a bit of a double edged sword. On the one hand they update the specification and look of their models but on the other it quickly dates and devalues the old models which has an effect on how the brand is thought of. Rolex don’t keep messing around with their models. This gives the brand a certain amount of integrity. Some may think that watches such as the Submariner are a bit boring but when it’s right, it’s right. This theory is backed up when you think of the one Omega model that’s pretty much stayed the same - the Speedmaster Professional with hesalite. This is their one watch which is universally well thought of (apart from all the special editions over the years!).

Rolex has the submariner for its watch that stays the same, its just u fortunate it's a big rectangular piece of shit with a stupid fuckin cyclops and no clear case back. Yawn. Yes the Rolex will hold its value but only if you can actually get hold of one, waiting lists appear to be lengthening to the point that you will have forgotten what you ordered, unless of course you are willing to pay 50% extra and buy via the grey market.
    Whereas your Omega will be available, on your wrist, getting admiring glances and telling the time, all while you have that look of satisfaction having bought a great watch at a great price.
    So buy the Omega on a bracelet, get a few spare straps so that you can mix thing things up, go on a nice city break with your partner and still have some money in the bank in the bank.

I almost got one last year but instead got the Tudor Pelagos, but it was a very hard decision to make, so I knew I’d circle back to the Omega. It’s only been 3 days but the watch is sitting at dead on still, so there are no complaints there. Being able to see the nicely decorated 8800 movement is a great touch on this watch as well. The very nice box adds a nice luxury touch.

    This is by far the most interesting offering from Omega in years. Very good product at an attractive price point. I think Rolex are playing a dangerous game of restricting supply to increase desirability, and relying on their brand equity to get away with it. An increasing number of people are getting peeved at the waiting lists, and will consider alternative options from Omega and Grand Seiko. As for this watch, if they managed to bring it down to 40mm, lose 1mm in thickness, and get rid of the date, I'd put my name down for one.

    Sadly, I don't think the SM 300M will "topple" the Submariner purely because too many people are so engrained with bias towards Rolex and the Submariner itself. Yes. there is absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that Rolex makes truly fantastic watches, but they're almost too common. More in the sense of that they're always the first thing that people lean towards when they think of buying luxury watches. The Omega is different stylistically, more interesting to look at, and much less copied. It has a different shape and feel overall, and in honesty the quality difference is almost non-important because at that price you're generally getting a great watch no matter what. In my opinion the Omega is the winner, but of course I'm also subjected to bias.

    • @bighands69

      Many people that own a Rolex probably have more than one of them. They are a dress watch, true active sports watch and are reasonably priced considering what they offer.
      The Seamaster is only one waterproof watch in the whole line up of Omega. Every Rolex has a screw down crown (baring Cellini). Rolex are both a dressy watch and a rugged watch all in one. Even the top end Day Date in complete gold can be taken diving or to the board room.

    I acquired a Moonwatch Speedmaster in 1993 and Planet Ocean 600 in 2014 the one they used Bond in Skyfall. In 2013 send my Speedmaster to a "service complete" at the Omega headquarters and it came back as new or even better. The advance of Omega in quality, terminations, the ceramic bezel and the improvement in the manual machines (coaxial movement and the most updated master-coaxial) technically surpass Rolex, without detracting Rolex historical quality, and the Speedmaster 1861 caliber continues to test its value from the Mercury program to the present in the ISS EVA, a topic in which Rolex did not even participate or did not qualify. Nobody can argue about the quality of Rolex and less about the Submariner (used by many professionals), but I understand that Omega is today a step forward, and with the actual prices Rolex doesn't want or can't compete. I love both brands. I respect Rolex for its history and his indisputable well-achieved fame. If you can pay the price and you want one, undoubtedly will also take an excellent choice.
