The idea, which Dave has continually promoted, that James didn’t play guitar before Dave joined the band is just ludicrous. The first recording of Hit the Lights doesn’t even have Dave on it. He just cannot stop selling himself as the band’s only true talent.

I dont get why Dave even felt it was needed to go into so many details from such a small question. Plus some of it does seem a bit odd and out of proportion. Lars made the add that got him James, and later on the others joined, Lars was the one who got them their first gig that earned them what was it, a coule of beers and 14 bucks or something like that? Its true that Dave was asked to be the lead guitarist and singer because James did not feel confident enough to do both things, but i have never heard of Dave talking to promoters, especially given that it is well known that Dave was either drunk or high most of the time, and also spend a lot of time fighting everyone while he was drunk or high, so in between being high, drunk, fighting, performing, and Co writing songs and rehearse them, when did Dave due all the manger job things? And after Dave got fired, Lars was quickly able to not only keep the band going (they were in the middle of a tour afterall) and he got them a new record producer Flemming Rasmussen studios to record the next 3 albums. So if Dave really was doing all of that stuff for them how come Lars was able to literally pick all that up the very next day? Dave might have helped with a few things, but claiming to be the one in charge of everything, no that is going too far.

They asked Dave to do the crap work like talking to promoters and getting the booze (rather than coffee lol) because he was most definitely NOT the Alpha Male. And he says he had to fight?! He's never stopped doing that, nor does that make him an alpha. Traditionally speaking, the people who found a band are usually the ones calling most of the shots -- and it seems that the band has said for years that everyone has their place and contributes, even when they've recalled the early days.
Omg, if Mustaine has to insist so much that he was the alpha in a band, then it didn't happen that way. I really feel sorry for him. He needs major therapy. He screwed up and got booted from Metallica and never got over it (despite trying to tell the public that he's got no hate and has been over it for a long time). Dude needs a shrink.

People need to remember Dave was in metallica when shit wasn’t really official or mature at ALL. They were literally kids I mean KEA wasn’t even out 😂 they were HARDLY metallica . Man writes a few riffs and claims he’s the goat. He’s one of my favorites but as of late I’ve lessened my liking just because of the lies and hateful remarks literally 39-41 years later . THATS A LONG TIME. Metallica is the better band, the more skilled band , the more stable band , the more musical, not faster for the sake of being faster ( four horsemen is widely considered to be better than the mechanix which is faster ) . I’ve never been a guy that comments paragraphs defending either band . But man this is getting old . I know some of its subjective but most things aren’t . There’s a reason he’s still mad at 60 after they made up. If metallica was really garbage and jealous of him, why have they never brought him up and he’s constantly thrown shots even after they became friends again. That tells you all you need to know

Yeah dave wrote some riffs in the demo tapes
But when kill ‘em all started Dave was out and all solos were changed by Kirk
Was Dave given credits at least yes he was
in the rock and roll hall of fame the original demo tape (no life til leather) has the lineup of “written by James, Lars Dave and Ron”
Even if dave somehow stayed in Metallica, I feel like him and Jason would’ve got into fights and dave would be out anyways

I've been a Metallica fan since Dave was in the band and have seen a few videos on stage. He did indeed talk to the audience between songs and James looked really shy. Take into account he wrote the majority of the cassette tape demo, and they all used his songs (spread them our over 3 albums), and the fact that James wanted to get the singer from Armoured Saint to be their lead singer around '89, and this sort of backs up what Dave is saying (I read Dave's book). I LOVE James and Dave so I have no horse in this race but I don't doubt Dave on this considering the above. Plus as we all know, Dave is a character and outspoken. Ron was in the band for a very short time and had problems with Dave so I'm not surprised what he said. Plus it gets Ron's name out there talking about this stuff so is it self promotion on his part? These are the facts and its up to you to decide but personally I think Dave is telling the truth.

They only used 4 of his songs on their first album. Providing a couple of riffs for the second album wouldn't even make up a song.

The whole Leper Messiah thing is tenuous at best. Sure, Dave came up with a riff that sounds like it influenced the mid section in Leper Messiah, but what's on the album is not the same. By Dave's logic, James should be credited for Avenged Sevenfold's This Means War because Sad But True influenced it
