  • Luciano Pavarotti performs Ruggero Leoncavallo vesti la giubba from the opera "Pagliacci", undoubtably brilliant.
    Italian:
    Recitar! Mentre preso dal delirio,
non so più quel che dico,
    e quel che faccio!
    Eppur è d'uopo, sforzati!
Bah!
    English:
To act! While out of my mind,
I no longer know what I say,
    or what I do!
And yet it's necessary... make an effort!
Bah! Are you not a man?
    You are Pagliaccio!
    Put on your costume,
    powder your face.
The people pay to be here, and they want to laugh.
And if Harlequin shall steal your Columbine,
laugh, Pagliaccio, so the crowd will cheer!
Turn your distress and tears into jest,
your pain and sobbing into a funny face - Ah!
    Laugh, Pagliaccio,
    at your broken love!
Laugh at the grief that poisons your heart!

For those who don't know what this is about:
"Vesti la giubba" (Put on the costume) is a famous tenor aria from Ruggero Leoncavallo's 1892 opera Pagliacci. "Vesti la giubba" is sung at the conclusion of the first act, when Canio discovers his wife's infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown because "The show must go on".

During the "big part" that everyone knows he's saying "laugh clown at your broken love, laugh at the grief that poisons your heart." The whole song's a great insight on what its like to be a performer. Putting on your costume every night to make people happy while your internal struggles go unnoticed. Doesn't matter if its a clown in the 19th century or a famous comedic actor in 2014, thats some true shit.

Yes it is so, but in the libretto he's weeping because his wife is unfaithful and that is "the grief that poisons'' his heart. But it could be interpratate either way, for the massive audience, who listens only to one aria and not the whole opera.

As a musician I've seen it happen many times either with other musicians or people who truly feel the piece. There's a moment when you completely disconnect and your soul truly transcends. It takes you some times to fully regain your thoughts after the piece has ended. Some people look at their tears in shock because they were not even aware that they cried.

Domingo is a great actor and musician, but his voice was smaller and not as released as Pavarotti's. The world is a much poorer place without him.

I've been listening to this on again off again for the past day after hearing about one of my favorite youtubers (small channel) had recently taken their own life out of grief from their best friend having done the same thing the day before. I'm utterly heartbroken and this song brings me some bittersweet solace. The ironic nature of performance, the mask of joy hides a crying broken soul. She brought so much joy and happiness to so many people, but wasn't able to find the warmth she gave out to so many others in herself. Its been so rough these past few days, but that's the tragic comedy of life - it continues. Take care, all of you. You're never alone, and you are loved.
Rest in eternal, blissful peace Rali. We miss you so much, no matter how long its been since you've graced us.
