Europe, Canada, etc should make NATO more independent of the USA.
and join together to make our own military equipment .
Only France and the UK have Nukes in that list
Though it’s a high bar, this really does need to be the answer.
We Americans have been asking you all to do that since 2014.
@@Budget_Prepper Yeah, we thought it was going to be peace. Turned out we were wrong.
Meanwhile none of this is being aired on TV news. Surely this impending crisis is more important than any other issue.

It's not being aired because Ukraine is being destroyed. The nonsense they have spouted this past two years is showing itself for what it is.

Michael Clarke is no professor. He is a 🙄 (donkey).
Your pay packet is in the post lickarse
Parphasing De'Gaulle nations dont have friends only interests. Europe must learn to take responsibilty for its own fate. America has been, and hopefully remain a great supporter of Europe, but if Europe is not prepared to defend its interests, why should America.
Nope, not De Gaulle. It was Palmerston in 1848 speaking in the House of Commons. The American Kissinger paraphrased it a century later. Not aware De Gaulle ever said it and is unlikely to have quoted a Brit.
USA blew up Nordstream with the express purpose of de industrialising the EU.
America and Europe is tightly knit together by trade. It's the largest amount of trade in the world. If Europe gets into a major war with russia it will have devastating effect on the economy not only in Europe, but equally in America.
The USA has long been against building an independent European defense capacity within the NATO organization. Madeleine Albright strongly warned against building an independent European defense within NATO. The Trump administration opposed the establishment of the European PESCO project with the same arguments.
The US often forgets that Europe is also a defense of the American people. The only time solidarity was tested was when you asked for European help - and got it. But the US left Afghanistan without regard for its allies. My country has relatively lost more soldiers than the United States - and this was thanks for the help.
What more and more Europeans have come to realize is that we cannot trust the Americans. Buy European weapons and build an independent European defense organization. We have a population, economy and capacity to match the US. A United States against China without European support is hardly a desirable scenario for the American people - MEGA (Make Europe Great Again)
As yu see in some answers here there is already a readiness of going it alone. Trump probably destroyed the US hegemony by babbling. When the Europeans and the Asians see that US promises are thin air there will be a Nato without us and a Asian Nato without us. Not being the top dog dollar will not be THE currency and us will tank.
I knew Mike Clarke in the early 80s when he was a lecturer and me a student at Newcastle Uni Politics Dept. He is as good now as then. He looks and sounds the same. Well done on your career, Mike!
Was he so wrong at that time too 😅
1. Europe does not have the resources to build up and it will be very costly for them.
2. Zelensky presidency finishes in a month. If People are against him and want him to go why he should stay 🤔
3. Trump did not say anything about NATO during whole his campaign. All he said was no help for Ukraine. Nobody knows really what is Trump's intention toward NATO
4. He argues Ukraine should continue the war and keep the war for what? What will remain of Ukraine at the end of this war with billions of loans, no infrastructure, no economy, a shortage of workforce, and thousands of people with disabilities and trauma? How does this war benefit Ukraine? It more looks like it benefits those who do not want to accept they made a mistake that caused the devastation of a country. It is all about the West hegemony, not Ukraine 😂 so how did Ukraine plan to win the war? By staying in the war for 10 years even today they can safely mobilize enough manpower.

UK politicians are so tough against Putin, Bravo!!......Sadly, UK has absolutely no serious conventional force, hardly any Frontline infantry, tanks, ships. Air force is decent, but of no major threat to Russia.
You are who ?
@@Thelostgoldhunterssomeone that speaks the truth.
@@Thelostgoldhunters Someone who knows what he is talking about. I would disagree in only one regard. He overestimates the capabilities of the RAF.
Not entirely true - the UK might not match Russia in a conventional war with boots on the ground tanks etc etc but the UK can deliver a nuclear blow that can be just as devastating to Russia as the US is. Do not think that the UK is some kind of push over the air force & navy are very capable !!
UK military is by far the highest ranked in W.Europe. Just check global firepower index or any other military ranking. France a long way behind, nobody else even registering. Airforce and Royal Navy too small but very high tech and capable, particularly submarines and the latest frigates.
Michael Clarke is always a fascinating calm-headed analyst.

Wise words with expert knowledge again from Prof Michael Clarke…I wish the western politicians would listen to him!!🧐😉👍🏼
Western politician indeed listen to him and his type wrong assesment . This is why they are in this mess now 😂
Good. We need a Europe-only alliance. No USA, no Turkey.
Germany itself is selfish ot it can deal with Russia own its own.
I hope and pray that every African nation and nations with people of color file lawsuits for reparations from the Royal families, and Western nations until the COMING AGAIN OF JESUS CHRIST 🙏!
Never trust America
I have seen how this works in my lifetime. You just cheat each other and pretend. It's how you got the militaries you have.

Excellent interview 😃
Well, that was sobering if not unsurprising.
As a Military brat, I can tell you that Sweden and Finland will not leave under any condition, esp. Finland with its history and Russa. Sweden will stay as it means not only protection through numbers but great sales opportunities within NATO. The big loser will be US. UK will need to buckle up and get with it in terms of prep and forces .( as with Canada! )
I totally agree. I would add to that, if I may, the eastern front of NATO, who have borders with Russia and consider themselves lucky to have been accepted as NATO members. They are staunch NATO supporters, all having more than 2% of GDP for defence budget, not surprisingly. 50 years of darkness under the Russian boot, having their countries plundered, made them resolute not to repeat this ghastly piece of history again. Granted, there's Hungary and Slovakia that are duplicitous, just like Turkey. Serbia is not a NATO member. Therefore, out of discussion. In my humble opinion, Europe does not need USA. as a member. They are united more than ever. I live in Europe.
This channel needs to turn the volume up, can hardly hear it.
Turns out you're not missing anything.
I like Sir Michael. He is very believable. Cannot see the thinking of many NATO members who are very nervous Nellies over Putin and his rotting country. Oh, how I wish that NATO would stand up to Putin and his henchmen and tell them where to get off and in so doing support Ukraine.
Ukraine will.never win back the territories it has lost. That is a simple fact.
But your Sir Michael is admitting what others have been saying last year - NATO and its client state are defeated. How can a paper tiger stand up to a real bear ? It is wishful thinking.
actually it is the capitalist west that is rotting. Russia can't be defeated, its resources are near infinite and in China it has found a perfect technology partner that can use those resources to provide very advanced tech in amounts the West can't match today. It pains me as someone who lives in the UK that I have to say this. Nuclear arsenal gives makes you undefeatable, gold makes you independent. Russia has both and that's what count in this and in any similar future case ...
And take Putin to the Hague.
What happened to the IRONCLAD comments of support FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES to Ukraine. Can you ever trust the modern day political anymore ?
Could be like Europe; humanitarian and moral support
You cannot trust an American president that has a popularity of less than half the voters making a promise. Better luck if you've got Senate approval for a treaty. And you need the House to craft spending bills. If you believe or count on such comments, shame on you, you fool.
@@icu17siberia you know that Europe has supplied more than the US right? Not just in humanitarian but also in financial and military support...
@@thegreatdane3627Yes, but "Europe" is 27 separate countries.
@@2Uahoj No, Europe is 44 countries. 27 countries is the EU. And the US is 4-5x larger than any country in the EU. If we compare the aid to Ukraine relative to the size of each country's population or economy, then the US is not even in the top 10...
People who wants peace, liberty and democracy need to stand together or we are lost. Let not Putin sow discord amongst us. The reason for the US to be a NATO member is that we together can uphold global law and order for a prosperous future for us and our children. The US going its own way is a losing proposition, not just for Europe but for the US and every other peace loving Nation. If you are American and anti NATO you are pro fascism.
I am a European living in the US. I have been always pro-NATO. But I grew sick in the past two years of seeing almost half of my country of origin's population vocally oppose NATO and construe it as an occupation force. Americans have lost the minds and hearts of many Europeans (at least on my neck of the wood) to Russian propaganda. Left with the choice, I now believe that US must look at the facts and act in self interest. Many Europeans (not all, I am aware) are selling the 2% contribution as an insurance policy? No you need to increase your defense capability, arguably by much more, for the alliance to make sense. Yes , we all lose without NATO but most likely the US loses a bit less, perhaps much less. Sad but I am calling things as I see them.
@@paoloporsche3459 depressing and scary
'The reason for the US to be a NATO member is that we together can uphold global law and order ...'
Yeah right, like you upheld it by invading Iraq and Afghanistan and Israel.
You have lost all credibility. Russia has ended your global order, it is for you to join the new one. You cannot dictate to others as in the colonial era.
@@paoloporsche3459You should look at the foreign aid budgets and refugee support, Poland has 2 million, before demanding more money. Trump says this to divide, he is pro Russian and does not believe in democracy, and nor it seems do 40 odd percent of Americans.

Europe is wealthy. It should be entirely self sufficient for defence.
The UK needs to wake up and rearm. This is a dangerous world.
And I disagree that there is anything 'philosophical' about massive war crimes and waves of terror attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. If any countries side with Putin, it's not about philosophy, it's about being rotten to the core.

What a lot of nonsense ... NATO dismantling.... Really ???
nice stereo from the 1980s!! Seriously, Mr Clarke is an excellent source of unbiased news.
Excellent analysis! Fabulous piece! Must watch!
The person interviewed seemed to suggest Austria is in NATO. While it did join something called the Partnership for Peace it is not in NATO. He also implied it and other countries could be bought off with Russian energy deals. A quick check of pipeline maps would show that most pipelines from Russia are either via Scandinavia, Baltic into Germany, Poland or Ukraine. Piping into Austria or Hungary might need to go via Turkey and the Mediterranean. May be much easier said than done.
NATO will not fall apart. All they have to do is PAY their fair share in accordance with the treaty. It's that simple.
Nato's purpose ended with the cold war and europe needs to be able to take care of itself without the US. Shut it down.
NATO se neće raspasti !
Raspašće se USA i EU 😂
Agreed. Europe has a GDP of 19 Trillion dollars. That Japan and the US should be the primary countries to finance this war is insane
Very Correct, Honest INSIGHT !! Thank You !!
Best start a new alliance then. Its not like countries haven't fallen out before and miraculously found that certain countries have always been our friends.
I do wonder if Canada with go with the US or with Europe. If with Europe, how is the US going to feel about that.
dont care - ex Canuck here - Canada has no military - its smaller and less capable then the NYC PD
makes no difference since Canada´s military is virtually nothing anyways
Economically, I think Canada will stay with NAFTA. Separately, Canada and US have treaties that don't include Europe. Still, Canada could remain a part of NATO
Currently, Canada is the biggest freeloader in NATO. There is no political will in Canada to change that. Given the reality that Russia can't attack Canada without going through the USA my guess is Trump would try to force Canada to increase its military spending through trade sanctions.
US is becoming more latin oriented - Canada is a minor nation in US view - Canada defense is secured due to its location by the US military without Canada's input or permission

A poor country where people live in grinding poverty, without the basics of clean water, electricity and sewerage, with a GDP about the size of Italy, has Germany and the USA shivering in fear. NATO is over.
For those countries who were committed to mutual defence, the preservation of democracy and human rights there needs to be a new alliance, not dependent on the US and prepared to shun dependence on autocratic regimes. It will take 20 years to build and develop and will need to invest in its defences in every respect from protecting against misinformation, in IT and financial independence from the US and competitor blocs to the development of weapons and energy.
