"Technical as fuck" lol. The best explanation of DT that I've heard yet. The next one you have to watch should be a live version. One thing to hear all of that. Quite another to actually see them play it. The Illumination Theory Live at Boston Opera House is a good one.
This is almost a masterclass in musical tension. There are so many moments where the music just winds you up so tight and you keep thinking they'll resolve it in the next measure....and then that carries over to the next...and the next and FINALLY they break into a more calming 4/4 signature and you feel like you can finally take a breath and say 'holy shit that was intense!'.
@@aarnimiettinen5962 yees, i mean, outcry or lost not forgotten from ADTOE in my opinion are really hard and i love them, not a drummer i'm a guitarist but i know that mangini is a fucking technical beast as well as the other members.
I've been following Dream Theater since their "first" cd, "When Dream and Day Unite"... Nobody compares to them! If you want to hear something that will take you down so many different roads, take a listen to their "Metropolis Pt. 2, Scenes from a Memory" cd. In MY opinion, I believe this is the greatest "concept" album ever written and recorded, the further you get into it the more intense it gets!
There is a live recording of them playing this entire album, accompanied by an orchestra, called “Score”. If you get a chance to watch it, please do so. Incredible falls way short of describing their talent.
Great suggestion and probably my favourite concert from them. But they only play side two in it's entirety. I believe you can only find live perfornances of side one in bootlegs or non official recordings, except for the last track.of side one, which I believe is in Live at the Budokan
Back in the early 2000’s I remember listening to this in the car with a friend. He was the driver, I was the passenger.I remember as soon as the siren started going off in the song he started to freak out looking for emergency vehicles. He thought he was going crazy because there was none around. It was hilarious!
You opened Pandora’s box with Dream Theater. Their musical talent is probably the best of any band that i’ve ever heard. And lots of their songs tell a story, which is incredible. Definitely do more Dream Theater.
Dream theater are arguably the biggest and most influential progressive metal band. They've been at it since the mid 80s, influencing many of the current progressive metal bands today. Their albums have a different sound to each so it's hard to say "this is Dream Theater", but The Glass Prison is a great into song since it kind of hits all the elements they bring. They are also known to have "epics" that are 20+ minutes and they're a real journey. If you're feeling up for that, Octavarium and A Change of Seasons are generally noted as two of their best Train of Thought is generally considered their heaviest album, so that could be a good next venture. I'd recommend This Dying Soul or Honor Thy Father. If you want Dream Theater with aggressive vocals, I'd highly recommend Opeth. Their albums have a much wider range than Dream Theater, starting out as black metal and getting more polished and less aggressive with each passing album. I'd recommend Blackwater Park as that's usually regarded as one of if not their best song.
Thank you Patreon Trey, I would have used a very similar request! Awesome reaction. It happens to be the first Dream Theater song I ever heard, but then I dove in and loved their early stuff and the stuff they still do today. Amazing band, with a lot of different progressive songs. Have fun.
Loved DT since 1991. Best way to understand DT is listening to entire album "Scenes From A Memory: Metropolis Pt. 2" .... listen to that masterpiece CONCEPT album and you'll fall in love with DT!!!
The 1 st time I ' ve listened this....I understand nothing..... musically talking....after 12 times...I started to make the journey in the middle of billions of notes and the complexity of the building of this kind of taste music...
My good sir, for instrumental Dream Theater Epicness give a listen to Liquid Tension Experiment... It's a side project of 3 members of DT and Tony Levine...
To appreciate the full magnitude of The Glass Prison you need to go back to a pair of earlier songs from Dream Theater called The Mirror/Lie. The Mirror also has to do with alcoholism or some type of addiction. The Glass Prison is part one of a five part suite nicknamed the AA saga. This Dying Soul is part two of this suite on the DT's next album called Train of Thought which in it's entirety is full on technical metal like you've never heard before. Part three really brings the tempo down to a Pink Floyd feel. It's called Repentance which is on the album Systematic Chaos. Part four is Root of all Evil on the album Octavarium. Part five is the grand finale off the album Black Clouds and Silver Linings. The whole thing is just pure god mode instrumental and lyrical genius. DT is the most underrated and underappreciated band on the planet. I hope you can react to the entire journey of the AA saga starting with The Mirror/Lie.
This is a great song of theirs indeed. "Lie" is another really good one of theirs. Another highly technical band that you should check out would be Allegaeon, especially their song "Cognitive Computations". That song is beyond sick!
3 emotional/beautiful Dream Theater requests, all from Once In A Livetime - Peruvian Skies, Hollow Years and Take Away My Pain. (the latter helped me get through my father's passing). The musicianship is top-notch as always and James was on point with the vocals. The addition of the sax for these live recordings added another level of atmosphere to the performance. Love me some T & T! Peace! Cheers!!!!
Oh buddy! I thought your reaction and critique was incredible and so on point. I am a huge Dream Theater fan. I’ve been a fan for 20 years, have seen them live 17 times, and have two Dream Theater tattoos. “The Glass Prison” was the first song I ever saw them play live back in 2002. I would’ve never considered that song to be one I’d recommend to a first time listener but you may have changed my mind. If you haven’t already I’d be curious to see your reaction to the Dream Theater masterpiece (and my personal favourite) “The Count of Tuscany”. Cheers! * Carpe Diem 😉
Glad you enjoyed the song :) The inner struggle you have interpteted from the lyrics is the old drummer Mike Portnoy's struggle with alcohol. This is the first song of 12-step suite, in which you hear stages of Portnoy had to deal with while battling with alcoholism. Also, if you enjoy technical metal, you may want to give Veil by Haken a shot :)
I’m surprised to see no one else has mentioned checking out Between The Buried and Me. My favorite album from them is The Parallax 2: Future Sequence. That album took me months of listening and then seeing it live in its entirety to fully appreciate and fall in love with it. That being said... Colors is awesome but the one album that really blends all their styles together is, The Great Misdirect. I’ve been listening to a lot of Cephalic Carnage and GoatWhore lately so there’s that.
Most people hear the turntable portion as some Nu-Metal thing but it’s literally the section where everything changes. The message becomes much more direct and the turntable being drawn back at the end is like rewind it all and move the fader over to the next turntable…a change in direction!
12st Steps suite for a lot of people are generally a spiritual journey regarding their addiction, especially on Alcohol or Drugs. the song is heavy because that's one thing we couldn't get out of.... it's addiction.
I'm a black brova that has been a fan of DT since 'Images and Words.' They are so great that they are my #2 rock band behind Van Halen. These boys are no joke! This song seems more powerful today than back then when it was first released. The emotion in James voice at times is just epic. "OPEN MY EYES!!!" for instance!
Nice vid. It's about the drummer going through AA. The story continues with This Dying Soul, the Root of all Evil, and The Shattered Fortress. Totally worth a listen as well! Watch them live! Also, DARK ETERNAL NIGHT! :)
Metropolis pt. 1 from Dream Theater. Change of seasons as well. Also Odyssey from Symphony X is quite a masterpiece and musical journey. Awesome musicians
Dance of Eternity is probably their most well known song due to the sheer technicality and complexity displayed. Fans usually cite the 24 minute Octavarium as their best song.
I want to say I really enjoyed your perspective on the song. I also like how you likened it to master of puppets. You should check out A nightmare to remember from dream theaters black clouds and silver linings album.
This is one of DT's songs where former drummer Mike Portnoy addresses his struggles with alcoholism (glass prison). There was supposed to be a twelve-song series (corresponding to the twelve step program), but I don't know if it got completed before he left the band. Definitely a moving and meaningful song
It was completed in 5 songs over 5 albums. There are a total of 12 parts. Give it a listen sometime, it's extraordinary. 1. Glass Prison from Six Degrees 2. This Dying Soul from Train of Thought 3. The Root of All Evil from Octavarium 4. Repentance from Systematic Chaos 5. The Shattered Fortress from Black Clouds and Silver Linings
This was probably a good song as an introduction to Dream Theater, it has a lot of the elements that make them enjoyable but also intellectually stimulating. “Take the Time”, “Lie”, “This Dying Soul” would all be good choices as well, and of course they have been around for a very long time and there’s a long list of other worthy songs by them.
I'm in an Aluminum Prison at the moment. I'm to be released soon.... but not too soon, it's still early! Love me some DT. I'd love for you to do some of their cover albums... preferably Dark Side Of The Moon. These guys are so amazing. Petrucci is a god! Cheers! Peace!!!
Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner, requested before but seems to have disappeared...hope you can find time to take the journey, i know its long but well worth it and it literally seems to last about 3 minutes. Great story telling, i suggest the live version, most seem to want the flight 666 version. Peace bro and good luck with your channel. God Bless!
It’s good to see you look at incredibly diverse metal, Dream Theater is a good one. You should look into more OSDM, like Cannibal Corpse or Deicide🤷🏽♂️both good bands with successful careers
Dream Theater has a huge catalogue and their sound can change from album to album. Sometimes you get crazy metal songs like this, ballads, or mid temp masterpieces. Please check out a ton of their material. The song that got me into them was "Lie" It was their single from the album "Awake" and was actually played on the radio a little bit. If you ever react to it please make sure it is the full 6:34 version and not the radio edit that cuts out the extended guitar solo
If you're going to recommend that he listen to "Lie", he's GOT TO listen to it preceded by (and together with) "The Mirror". In other words, "The Mirror/Lie" as ONE SONG. That was DT's original intent...
Try Opeth! If you want to discover Prog Metal Opeth is the go to band. I recommend the songs Harlequin Forest, The Drapery Falls, Dirge For November or Hessian Peel If you wanna do an Opeth journey. Have a great dude 😁👍🏼
Next Dream Theater suggestions, In The Presence Of Enemies Part 1 and Part 2, The Root Of All Evil, As I Am, The Shattered Fortress which is the grand finale of the 12 step suite that The Glass Prison is the opening song of.
Want to hear an insane guitar/keyboard section? Listen to 'Fatal Tragedy' by these guys. Petrucci once said 'We'll have a hell of a time doing THIS live!'
A good beginning.. this is one of the better songs ever by the band, and they have quite a catalogue of great songs! If you want a good album through and through to take your steps with them, I recommend "Images & Words".
OMG, the woman who suggested this song started you off right in the deep end of things. LOL. Don't get me wrong, I love this song but wow, your first song by them. LOL. Most of their songs are super complex and intense but this might be their most intense of all of them. This is another group I suggest doing live but for the complete opposite reason I said you should do Zeppelin live. These guys are so perfect in their playing the live version sounds exactly like the studio version in most cases. And seeing them live you can really see how talented they are. They have been around since 1988 with around 15 studio albums and numerous double and triple live dvd's. They are most likely the most famous group you enver heard of. If you like them they have so many good songs it's hard to choose.
the internal struggle was alcoholism. I think this maybe their best album. Yes awake and images and words are classics, scenes from a memory pt 2 is the penultimate prog metal concept album, but this was an interesting moment between them transitioning into something more with the times, and that awkward transition in conjunction with the experimentation, led to their best work. Blind faith, the great debate, dissapear, 6doit (disc 2) i mean... hands down this was their best work imho.
Really enjoy that you actually talk after song and tell your thoughts. Would love if you did full album react/reviews. Just FYI albums from the 70 & 80 (not all) were constituted to to have a flow from one track to another so going in order may give you a different appreciation. Don’t bother doing Zeppelin they’ll just block it
The Adventures of TNT one last thing definitely recommend Tool Forty six and 2. I don’t think there’s an official music video but the fan made one set to Pans Labyrinth is prettycool
The first of 5 songs dealing with drummer Mike Portnoy's struggle with alcoholism. It's not where I would recommend a new listener to jump into them, but might as well continue with the series of songs. "This Dying Soul", "The Root of All Evil, "Repentance", and "The Shattered Fortress".
"So far I can tell this is gonna be a unique journey." My boy you have no idea! :D

Like many have said, the part at 6:28 should be illegal!
I love your avatar picture. Long live EVH
@@RareHarmony Thank you. I'm a MAJOR fan since 1981.
Check out Voices, scared, bridges in the sky, octury (outcry) and in the name of god by these guys.
the internal struggle was alcoholism.
Dream Theater are Amazing!!!
My Favorite Band ♥️
Petrucci The Best 🎸
I'm From Brazil 🇧🇷
The core of dream theater is the gtr John Patrucci and Mike Portnoy the drummer. This is a portnoy song is the first of the 12 steps.
Really enjoy that you actually talk after song and tell your thoughts. Would love if you did full album react/reviews. Just FYI albums from the 70 & 80 (not all) were constituted to to have a flow from one track to another so going in order may give you a different appreciation. Don’t bother doing Zeppelin they’ll just block it
I know. I kinda slowed my roll on zep. It’s so frustrating
The Adventures of TNT still check them out offline. Albums are golden, 3 is my personal favorite
If you like thrash, chech out Testament-Brotherhood of the Snake
Manic MTG I’m trying to do testament this week
The Adventures of TNT one last thing definitely recommend Tool Forty six and 2. I don’t think there’s an official music video but the fan made one set to Pans Labyrinth is prettycool
The first of 5 songs dealing with drummer Mike Portnoy's struggle with alcoholism. It's not where I would recommend a new listener to jump into them, but might as well continue with the series of songs. "This Dying Soul", "The Root of All Evil, "Repentance", and "The Shattered Fortress".
You should try their song - Illumination Theory
Lol the best band playing live shows in the 21st century and have classical musicians wanting to play with them
And a bigger shit ton of time signature changes...!!!
Nice plug for Animals As Leaders. Tosin Abasi is a god.
glass prison is a masterpiece...... but you have to have serious A.D.D. to appreciate it heh
The Mars Volta. You must react to this band. That is all.
...Start with something easy like Inertiatic ESP
Nah, start him with Cassandra Gemini or Frances The Mute lmao (jk)
