Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a lot like the movies - it isn't offering much in the story department, but the visual spectacle and world building are so dazzling that they carry the overall experience. Coupled with some improvements to Ubisoft's traditional open world formula, this is a solid showing from Ubisoft Massive that will please most, but is a must play for any who really loves Avatar.

I hope you can play Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader one day!
Does the game break immersion with modern day politics?!
@@JoesCaribbeanVanLife what do you mean by that?
This Game was developed by Ubisoft and is Limited to First-Person, what does this mean?
It means the only respectable way of playing it is by Pirating and Modding it- Amazing! 😀
@@DracobyteHe wants to complain about wokeness in a game with Aliens that don’t exist. Ignore him. 😂
I was playing this morning, and I shot an arrow through a fern at an rda mech, and not only did the mech’s front glass shatter leading to a unique animation where the soldier inside was scrambling for his mask, but the fern I shot through lost only the part of its mass that the arrow went through and the rest kept standing except for where I’d disconnected it with an arrow…I’m blown away by the tech here

And did this experience keep you invested in the game? Or is it a distraction from the ubisoft mediocrity
@@needasnowbunny7 yeah, today’s day and age I’ve been really impressed with some of the technical leaps forward that we have seen that will likely make gaming and development in the future compound their successes to give us a truly next gen experience. A little humility tends to go a long way.

Sad that you're full of this much hatred that you feel the need to spread it where it's not wanted or needed.
I hope RoboCop and this game help remind movie studios how well tie-in games can do if they don’t cheap out and are willing to invest in competent developers.

I can't believe this game is not horrible what a shock
this is what makes me sad because i remember a time when Ubisoft was known for making and publishing good fun games. They have completely squandered their reputation.
@@LilFeralGangreltheir game sales show otherwise.
Its made by Massive... division 2 is by far the best shooter Ive played.
It's basically Far Cry: Pandora, so of course it wasn't going to be terrible. They've honed Far Cry to a formulaic edge, so there was pretty much a road map pre-made for it. All they had to do was figure out how to apply it to being a big blue alien.
@@LilFeralGangrelThey sell a shit ton of games. Maybe other people then you still enjoy them. Your feelings aren't how everyone feels.
This would be brilliant in VR. All those people who wanted Pandora to be real would be in heaven! 😂

Given that it's an unreal 5 engine, the praydog unreal engine VR mod coming out this month should be able to play it.

As nice as it is to hear that this game came out looking great, I feel it shouldn't be a surprise that the team that made the best looking/feeling urban environment in the first Division game was successful in making a great looking natural environment as well. That team is at the top of the environmental immersion game. Ubisoft would be smart to use this team to boost their other teams' projects as well.
Agree
totally agree. I just adored walking around the division 1 soaking in the world. I did the same today with Avatar. They are excellent at giving their players a beautiful packed world to explore.
Yes and no. I think the marketing for this was horrible. Everything screamed Far Cry 7, and Ubisofts track record didn't inspire much confidence.
However, that's where game reviewers really do a much needed service. Between this and ACGs review I went from "maybe when it's on gamepass" to a definite buy
Massive Entertainment is an underrated studio. I've been a big fan since Ground Control 2. They've only made good games.
@@sean6793 Austin and ACG are definitely exceptions wouldn’t you say? The most common reactions I’ve seen are folks dunking on this game because it has low review scores. That said both reviews I appreciate since they understood the ways this game isn’t Far Cry

Makes me so happy you like this one Austin, was waiting for the review to go up on this channel before deciding to get it. But Avatar fan and this made me much more excited to play it.
Really happy they actually cared to make a good Avatar game. I love the world building James Cameron and his team did for the movies.
the dev videos on youtube in the game's leadup are a great little watch, they show how much they worked with Cameron's team right down to the tiniest detail and care so much about getting it right, and for my money, i think they nailed it.
@@NF_Redux Dude... have you heard anything about James Cameron? If they didn't nail it it wouldn't come out... hahahaha
Cameron might be an egotistical diva that thinks he's 100 times better than anyone else, but to be fair... the man is a genius when it comes to film making and he doesn't settle for anything than 2 steps ahead of what's currently possible... all of his movies hold that standard...
Terminator 2 pushed film making to a very very new era... the Titanic in terms of visuals is a masterpiece... Avatar pushed us to the new age of what's possible with 3D... and so much more...
A James Cameron movie will NEVER EVER BE MEDIOCRE... and he would never ever let them push out some bullshit based on his work... the dude cares about his reputation more than any other director...
Now, can we have a WW2 shooter directed by Steven Spielberg??? Pretty please??? 😋
Something I love so far is how well they’ve nailed the feeling of being a giant blue person. Running through the tutorial section and regular corridors basically being air vent sequences where you have to crouch - they just nailed the scale of it. Especially compared to Armoured Core where most levels you just felt like a regular sized thing, not a huge hulking mech.
So you recommend it? It’s worth $70
i love standing next to people it’s so trippy being twice their height sometimes i’m crouching next to a person and forget i’m crouching😭

How is it Ubi get their main franchise all wrong yet get this so right. I’m a big Avatar fan so was really wanting this to be something so definitely looking forward to grabbing it!
Because their franchises already have a solid idiot install base so pumping out a sequel every 2 years makes financial sense. Avatar was overseen by James Cameron and his studio and every decision had to go through him. Basically because Ubisoft weren't allowed to force out shit it will be much better than usual
Probably because it's not Ubisoft proper making it. This the studio behind The Division, no? Let Massive do the next AC.
I dunno but their 3rd party franchise games have been a cut above their own IP as of late (the nintendo colabs and now this). Might be they dont have the creative chops at the studio(s) anymore to realize/make their own world building work (or the creatives are just tired of their own IP). Here they dont have to do as much work in that department since there is already established lore and world for them to draw on... but who knows? Whatever the reason is, this looks way more bespoke than their usual open world adventures.
Peace
Worldbuilding isn't Ubisoft's strength, or at least it hasn't been for a long time. Adapting a preexisting world into an interactive format, however? Not as difficult as building something new from the ground up.
They don’t get far cry wrong. They just have done way too many of them, it’s sickeningly old now and it’s just not a fun formula anymore
I was so hesitant on this game because it just looked like another farcry. But after watching the release reviews, it has completely changed my mind, and now I want to play it.

If you had told me I'd be more excited to play an Ubisoft open world movie based game, rather than a new Bethesda IP, I'd call you a liar...
And yet here we are.
I'm convinced Ubisoft is truly a really great top tier game dev at its heart (after all they made AC2 way back when)... with some greedy ass execs constantly doing shit to ruin all their games.
Played a few hours today and am impressed. Feels like a sister game to Sony's Horizon series in a lot of ways...but with blue people. Massive is pretty much Ubisoft's secret weapon at this point.

The difficulty point was something I thought might immediately become an issue when you said you were playing this on controller (especially with a weak spot mechanic). While I'd love to have the immersive haptic experience, my first reaction was that combat was going to be an issue if the enemies aren't completely inept. So it seems for those who can do both controller or KBM, it's a decision between getting the immersive haptics or a more reliable/viable combat input (assuming they don't want to play on the easiest difficulty).
Big ups Austin and Ralph! The best reviewers on CZcams.

How many times do they say "bro" in the game
Not enough, brah
I am really happy that this one is actually good.
However, I will sadly not play it myself as I will stick to boycotting any full price game that includes an unnecessary cash shop.
Still hope that anyone who plays it will have a lot of fun with it :D
Lol
It's useless cosmetics lmao
"omg I can't resist buying the $5 t shirt and pants bundle in the shop!!! Argghhh omg ahhhh" ☠️
@@gotworc It is about having some principles, not about having to "resist some bundle". I do not care what is sold, it can be cosmetics or power ups or progression. When there is a cash shop in a full price non-live-service game, I simply won't play it.
You can choose to play it but you don't have to act like an idiot
Is there any way to get this on both pc and XB? I have a 4090 pc but it throws out heat and it would be cool to play this on the XB. Maybe a play everywhere or through the Ubisoft program >?🤔
I’ve got a 2070 super and it runs perfectly fine on my PC! Gotta say I love it so far it’s one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played only beat out by cyberpunk and maybe 1 or 2 others
My only criticism is I would like the option to stay in third person at all times instead of switching between the two
That would be an incredible amount of work. They would have to do high quality animations for both first and third person. There is a reason why most games choose one orientation, getting one right takes tons of work, let alone having both.
A lot of games that add another orientation don't add another set of animations and just reuse the original ones which are always lower quality than if they made custom animations for it.
Far Cry with Smurfs, not just slop but recycled slop.
Austin has truly leveled up the channel
One tiny detail i notice in the game is that when ur in a vent of some small compartment area when u try to stand up u hit ur head 😂
Glad someone else is willing to voice their appreciation for Avatar. It was a tremendous marriage of cutting edge tech, world building and masterful blockbuster writing and direction (even if the story and theme were somewhat derivative). The second one bored the pants off me though.
The strong points of Avatar is definitely it's tech and presentation. I'm glad this game lives up to that.
I can't really say the world building is a notable strong point simply because there's not much to it. Not necessarily a bad thing but it is how it is.
Unfortunately I'm not a fan if Avatar because the story just isn't really intriguing. It's definitely a "blockbuster story". It's perfectly serviceable but nothing truly interesting.
That's the one thing that's putting off on the game. I don't dislike Avatar, but I'm not a fan either.
I'm afraid I might buy it then lose interest since there's not much substance to compel me.
Or I might like it. I've liked games worse than what this sounds like. Just don't know.
I'll probably wait for a sale.
@@sawdust8691for me the world building is strong because they so vividly imagined an alien world. When you first step into the jungle in the game everyone gets blown away.
I also think the story is really interesting, or at least the premise. A human literally manages to inhabit an alien body, but yet still has the weakness of humans.
Terminator 2 is a better movie, but it's really the premise that makes it, the story is just one long chase sequence.
Not a fan of avatar… won’t be picking this up but glad your having fun with it.
Me too ✋️
John Mercer? Should have been John Avatar lmao
Excited to play this later after work!
Damn, was hoping I could write this one off and avoid adding it to the backlog 😂 reminded me very much of FC Primal from some of the footage which was probably the last FC that I really enjoyed!
Love the channel and the review, but I have to bring something up that both Austin and Skill Up talks about (and sadly misrepresents or misunderstands) in many of their reviews: DLSS and rendering resolution.
Saying you're testing the game in 4K while using DLSS performance is ignorant at best.
DLSS performance renders the game at just 50% pixels per axis or in other words just 25% of the overall resolution, which means using DLSS performance in 4K the game is being rendered at 1080p. So being impressed that a 4090 can run the game at "over 60fps at 4K on ultra settings" is just baffling, because it's not running at 4K. That 4090 is only managing over 60fps at 1080p!
The *output* is 4K, sure, but the game itself is only *rendering* at 1920x1080, and then DLSS is doing its best to make that look like 4K. Don't get me wrong it can still look great, but you're not anywhere near rendering at 4K, and so telling the viewers that "performance is good" while a 4090 gets "over 60 fps" at 1080p is either just doing nVidia's marketings for them or you're misinformed or misunderstanding DLSS.
And for 1440p on the 3090Ti with high settings, with DLSS performance, you're rendering at just 720p and upscaling to 1440. So for that GPU to only manage in "50-60 fps" in 720p is not something that a reviewer should praise with and I quote "performance is good"...
In my experience, the game got worst the further along I got. I really enjoyed the first Act, but then in act 2 I realized i'm just doing the same quests over and over again only in a location not as beautiful as the first and in act 3, I had to force myself to finish the game, I really really did not want to.
This is legitimately the most stunning setting I've seen in a video game in a long, long time. It blows my mind the way so many critics just toss that out of the equation saying things like "good graphics bad game" or "skin deep". When you play this game I just don't understand how you can be so numb to not appreciate the incredible amount of work and technology that went into this. It's obvious where the work was put and it's a very critical aspect of Avatar, it's deeper than just graphics and critics that can't get that are discredited IMO
FSR with frame Generation bumped my Ultra 1440p 3080ti from 55-60 fps to 100-120 fps
Glad you enjoyed the game Austin! I still ain't playing it though lol
Okay
Bah gawd, it's 'luke warm' skillup austin
It looks so good, best looking game made on this engine. I’m enjoying it so far pretty standard fair decent gameplay.
I am not an avatar fan and yet i think i'm going to find this game fantastic, it's designed in a way that i like to play my open world game, and i'm actually a big fan of the Ubisoft formula when done right and just a bit differently, which is the case here.
lmaoo, characters have 0 depth, questlines be like "run from a to b to c and back" terrible level system where mobs only nee 1 or 2 shots to kill you if you are only 1 level únderneath them. Awkward leveling through gear which makes gearstats comletely irrelevant since you only need it to not get one or two shot. A huge AI-generated open world with aölmost nothing in it except some flora and a few mobs. Gamebreaking bugs, performance issues (even on console lol) and a story that's really nothing special jsut black and white good and evil basic plot. You literally have nothing to do in this game except grinding out the same outposts over and over, gather the same old cooking material over and over and fly through a ai-generated world.
you are the reasonw hy modern gaming is cringe now. Developers just let their open worlds be created by Ai and make sure graphics are nice and that's it.
