As someone who works there and knows the actual traffic and legal battles santa monica has had with the faa, I have to defend the airport and its purpose.
The Airport was there long before the neighborhood and the faa even offered to buyout the houses at the ends for safety.
The airport will not be turned into a park though. That may be the official Santa monica city story but the land there is worth billions to developers despite this leading to even more overcrowding. The city believes that it will make more money with taxes on future high rises than with executive jet traffic coming through. This has already proven wrong as the city has lost MILLIONS in jet traffic landing fees because of that runway shortening. I knew clients who bought smaller aircraft like a GiV just so they could fly there. The city has even misused faa support funds for expenses other than aviation.
Other factors such as noise that neighbors claim to be a problem dissolve quite quickly as well unless you are living directly next to the runway by about 500 feet or one block. Most residents that live two blocks away aren't even aware that the airport exists. There are approach and departure restrictions designed to limit noise to a minimum.
This airport is not only vital to the businesses of santa monica, venice, dtla, century city, beverly hills, and brentwood, but as you demonstrated, this airport is an emergency relief airport. Even furthermore, it is a vital piece of Los Angeles history that also supports many peoples livelihoods.
In conclusion, this airport is a driving force for los angeles economy and prestige for those celebrities who fly in while also being a fantastic place for weekend aviators to fly in from 2-4 hours away and go to the beach or help their kid move into their dorm room for college. Airports such as Hawethorne (almost the same flight path as lax south runway), van nuys, and burbank just don't have the same location and travel value as Santa Monica. I say let those homes you were so worried about become aviators estates and build this beautiful airport a new future. Santa Monica city is running itself into the ground. Why should this legendary airport that they were given dominion over suffer for their poor judgement? Let some filthy rich investors come in and save the airport!

You should go to John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California. One of the shortest runways of major airports in the US and it’s very close to residential areas

Simply put closing Santa Monica Airport is racist at its core.
Simply put the Air traffic (flight training, private Jets, etc.) ave to operate out of somewhere.
The white privileged arrogant snowflakes that occupy Santa Monica don't want to shoulder their fair share of the Air transportation network. They want to push it off to places like Compton Airport. You know places that are primarily inhabited by lower income African American and Hispanic people.
These white privileged snowflakes want their Amazon packages filled with luxury goods showing up on their doorsteps with lightning speed. You know, using the air commerce infrastructure.
They just don't want the future airline and air cargo pilots training in earshot of them. That's what places like Compton airport is for.
They want all the convenience that air commerce brings to enrich their already privileged lives, but they just want it to be born more and more on the shoulders of people of color.
