I thought the most appropriate thing for me to do was to cover Seattle band The Presidents of the United States of America. To a lot of people they are a bit like garlic...either you love them or you really, really hate them. Some would call their music an insult to real musicianship. Or they might say their lyrics lack depth. So, what caught the world’s attention about this band? Stay tuned to find out.
Vocalist and bassist Chris Ballew would meet guitarist Dave Dedererin junior high while they were both attending a preppy school named Bush .They wouldn’t form a band until years later after the pair attended college, and returned to Seattle and jammed for the first time at a Bush alumni function.. Ballew had previously played in a punk-busker band named Egg who wrote a lot of songs that would eventually morph into Presidents songs most notably the track Naked and Famous.
And Chris Ballew would even live with alternative rock artist Beck in the early 90’s in Los Angeles. and would play live shows with him as an a multi-instrumentalist. It would be those gigs that helped shape his belief about live performances as he would tell Spin Magazine in 1996
I disliked the tone of the band. I like to reach out and take care of the audience and Beck was not interested in taking care of the audience at that point. So that didn’t work for me” he’d say
Lacking a drummer the duo initially played several shows in late 1993 under the monicker the The Lo Fi’s, The Dynamic Duo and Pure Frosting before landing on the name "The Presidents of the United States of America." It was after finally settling on a name the duo became a trio in December of 1993 when they added drummer Jason Finn. Finn for his part was also playing in another band at the time named Love Battery who was already signed to a recording label Atlas records. He would leave Love Battery in 1995 and would also play drums for another two big seattle bands including the fastbacks and skinyard..
In early 1994 The trio recorded a ten-song cassette named Froggystyle,in just one day. They would sell the record at live shows and Finn was selling cassette tapes from behind the bar at the Comet where he worked.
Unlike a lot of band’s from Seattle who used their difficult life experiences to shape their sound and music, Presidents weren’t full of angst as Ballew would tell Spin Magazine in 1996 “I Don’t Really Have Much To Say. I’ve Had a Really Good Life. I’ve Had the Room and Space and Freedom to Be Imaginative. I haven’t had anyone close to me die. I haven’t had any real hard times so I feel more productive to dwell on good things” he’d say.
.The band’s music was heavily influenced by bands like Boston, Nazareth, Cheap Trick, The Beatles and E.L.O while also harking back to the famous Seattle band’s of the 60’s includingThe Sonics, The Faboulous Wailers and The Kingsmen. Presidents' music was also notable because Ballew and Dederer would play a basitar and guitbass, which are regular, six-string guitars with special modifications: For example Ballew's instrument had two bass strings with which he would play bass parts on and Dederer's instrument has three guitar strings which he used to play guitar parts.
Presidents would be pretty much the antithesis of the so-called Seattle sound which was synonymous for being dark, moody and gloomy. The band’s music was much happier in comparison. Dederer would tell Spin Magazine in 1996 that the Seattle sound was misunderstood saying “The grunge thing is a total anomaly” claiming seattle is more closer to louie louie than i hate myself and i want to die. While many people think of Sub-Pop records when Seattle comes ot mind, in fact there was another record label, which was even older in the City named PopLlama which has been around 4 years longer. PopLlama would put out the band’s self titled debut album in 1995 and Presidents would eventually sign to Columbia the same year who would reissue their debut record later on in 1995. The band’s debut album would be certified triple platinum in America thanks to the strength of singles "Lump", "Peaches", and "Kitty",
The band’s songs were definitely light hearted compare to their seattle contemporaries with songs like
"Naked and Famous" being a biting commentary on the superficiality of Los Angeles. while tracks like "Kitty" is a savagely funny tribute to feline codependency while songs like "Stranger" was inspired by the classified personal ads from the Seattle weekly newspaper the Stranger.
The band’s most famous song, Peaches, has often been speculated about. Chris Ballew says the song is ab - Hudba
With it being election day i thought this was the most appropriate video. Throw your suggestions below for future topics
The Beastie Boys opening for Madonna on her Virgin Tour in 1985. Because it's just so damn strange a pairing, well since it was the 80's; it was probably thought up under a mixture of wine coolers and cocaine!
.
Or how the Dead Kennedys went out on a somewhat good note (in spite of their legal battles over the 'Frankenchrist' cover art, band infighting and disillusionment with the hardcore punk scene) with 'Bedtime for Democracy'
Would you consider a video on the band "Prick"? Maybe you could do it as part of an "under-rated bands/records" series (there's an idea for you ;) as I doubt too many will have even heard of them, anyway! Their eponymous album of 1995 is a work of genius, and remains among the most creative, avant-garde, industrial-pop-song-writing I have ever heard.
It might be a bit esoteric for some, but they were signed to Trent Reznor's Nothing imprint due to connections with Reznor from (singer/songwriter) Kevin Mc Mahon's former band, "Lucky Pierre".... I'm sure there's a story in there somewhere, and perhaps interest alone through the Trent Reznor connection and how good the album actually was? (Needless to say, it's brilliant and I loved it) Everyone should listen to that record, anyway, the single was a song called "Animal" which charted here in the UK and had pretty good Mtv rotation.... Anyway, I digress but I'd just like to know what happened to Kevin McMahon??? He's been quiet for years and he crafted a masterpiece with that album....
Other ideas: Priest and their 1985 court case over fans killing themselves. Similar case against Ozzy. Loads of material in the "Satanic Panic" of the 80's. What about the Elyse Pahler/Slayer case? Video worthy, for sure. What about Deicide and Glenn Benton?, what with his upside-down cross burned into his forehead! There's a story there. Or his fights with animal rights campaigners and the Stockholm bomb incident? There's reams of material on Benton.... The Marilyn Manson/Robin Finck onstage blow-job incident/scandal is another story, perhaps?... I could go on all day with ideas.

Kyuss!!
Wow! Most of this is even accurate. Tho I never auditioned for Weezer. That was an early world wide INTRAWEBS rumor. However, if they ever need a third guitarist, I'd be happy to join -- Rivers Cuomo is a truly great songwriter.
I'm not even a fan (Lump made for an _excellent_ Weird Al parody, though!), but it upsets me that the view counter on your videos looks about like mine... because I'm just some talentless hack.

I can't stress this enough - this band is one the most underrated from the 90s and onward. The songwriting was the perfect combo of swampy garage rock, alternative and pop fused together with a great schtick of goofiness that never took itself too seriously. But to even SUGGEST that they are were an insult to musicianship is a totally bullshit - these guys can PLAY! They purposefully restricted themselves to 2 strings on the bass and 3 on the guitar all while having a drummer with a tiny kit and nothing by a splash cymbal and hats. The irony? They absolutely wrote even more creative music having less and have a sound that no one has since replicated or even come close to and originality is certainly a huge part of musicianship. The drummer RIPS on his stripped down kit! Guarantee most amateur musicians out there can't even play their shit, total haters! Long live PUSA!
I totally agree it was bs for them to say they were an insult to musicmanship. These guys are pure artists, plain and simple. The music they produced was a true expression of themselves and their personalities. The narrator failed to mention their style was done in that of post-grunge. Which is basically suppose to be the exact opposite of grunge.
I'm so glad my parents got me into it as a kid
I have so many childhood memories listening to Dune Buggy, Lump, and Kitty
The unique sound always intrigued me, it sounded like nothing else

Well put!

@@danielspeake7539 The Presidents of the United States of America could write and play. If it's Punk that you're referring to, I played in a Hardcore Punk band when I was young and we were tight. Our most talented member was our guitarist. He was 3 years younger than the rest of us and was a gifted musician. His moms' side of the family were all naturally drawn to playing music. He had memories of being a toddler and sitting on his grandpaps' lap while grandpap played the banjo, fiddle, or guitar. Other family members would join in and in an hour or so, there would be a full bluegrass band on his grandparents' front porch. He was 12 when we started our band and he could play anything on radio or record by ear. It brought some quality to our Punk band.
Yup. To me they are a good example of a punk band
You’re a great example of greatness itself and that’s great😜
These dudes totally got “ Lumped “ in with Grunge
Nice pun.
I see what you did there....🤣
Best comment ev. . . .good comment
To be fair, Lump is probably their most grunge song. They have more in common with The Beachboys than they do with most grunge though.
@@rnrtruestories these guys were not grunge, but rather post-grunge. Instead of the depressing and negative overtones of grunge, this style was the exact opposite and suppose to be upbeat and happy. And it worked for them very well too. Look at any of their 90's live shows and you see the crowd absolutely goes nuts over them.
Great recap! But you missed one thing that was worth mentioning - Chris has written and released numerous records for children under the name Caspar Babypants. Great records!

You used to find him at malls, book stores and the like performing for kids too. He'll often play President's songs, since they're really just kids songs anyway. Plus Nirvana covers czcams.com/video/HwK1einTn-o/video.html

Being Irish, we only got the Peaches single and the album here, with no internet to speak of we never had much news on the band. When I saw this vid I was delighted!!

They were a fun band, and they always looked middle aged dads playing music, even back in their early days LOL
This band had a great response to a reporter back in the 90’s. Shortly after POTUSOA broke up, they were asked what the reason was. Their response, “we broke up for the same reason Sound Garden did....Chris left the band.”
Super simple and extremely catchy hooks. Rock and roll in its purest form.
No.
Shoutout to bands like PUSA and artists like Biz Markie for showing us that music can be fun! It doesn’t all have to be some super deep, intricate show of musicianship. It can just be fun, simple.
I remember them live. 2-string bass 3-string guitar jumping around like mad
Got that idea from the band Morphine ...
@Brett S
Chris has said so himself if you’ve listened to any number of podcasts he’s been on. And Morphine did mess around with their instrumentation ... especially with removing strings, adding mismatched strings, etc.
I never got to see them live but I love The Presidents so much! I'm in the middle of moving and I listened to every one of their albums in a row to get the energy to pack up my apartment. 😍

As a dad, I’m surprised you didn’t give a shoutout to the Casper Babypants project of Chis Ballew
We were able to attend a Casper Babypants show with our daughter a couple years ago, and have about six CDs. He makes toddler pop music which won’t make an adults head explode on a road trip. It’s also pretty fun to see a mosh pit full of 5-8 year olds jumping around and having a great time.

As a Seattle-ite, these guys were a pretty big deal around here. Got to see them back in '14 at the now closed Pyramid Alehouse. They seem like genuine, down to earth guys who were not into the fame and fortune. Also big Seattle sports fans, especially Jason Finn.
Did anyone else used to think that Ballew (who I'm pretty sure you're mispronouncing btw) and Dederer were brothers when I was younger, as they looked a lot alike to me.

You forgot to mention how Chris met up with Mark Sandman in Boston and formed a group called Supergroup, where they developed oddly stringed instruments.
Sandman's Morphine and Chris's POTUSA both took the idea for their projects.
What a great vid, and a real bit of nostalgia. I've spent hours in their company when they've been in London. We were there as guests of the band and they made us feel like family. PUSA are the most loveliest group of guys you could wish to meet 🤘❤️🤘
Even though I don't own any of their albums, I am squarely in the "Love Them" camp.
Great story! I've been a fan of PUSA since their 1st album. I lived in Seattle between '06-'13. I remembered they played a show each President's Day in Seattle. I went to all but the 2nd year. They are great fun to see live. They look like they're just having fun. I think they're all pretty talented. I don't know of any other rock bands that used two hybrid bass/guitar players for instrumentation. To me, that's inventive, which counts for a lot. :)
Thankyou for your channel and bringing back all these bands 🤓
I recently re-discovered this band. I had their first album on tape like everyone did. Their new stuff is quite good, too.

The top 100 for 1992 for example only included one grunge song, Teen Spirit at 32. There was more hair metal in the top 100, including 2 from Mr Big, Guns N Roses, Firehouse, Def Leppard, etc. The top of the charts was owned by R&B. In fact, the top alternative single was Under The Bridge at 8. There was more 80s alternative in the top 100 than 90s....U2, RHCP, the Cure, etc.
The PUSA were on MTV when I was in High School and they played the videos for “Lump” and “Peaches” to the point that it has taken almost 20 years for me not to be sick of those songs anymore! (Same with Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping”).
Saw them on a festival with only having heard a couple of they songs in the radio. I remember it as a surprisingly entertaining show. 👍
Word on the mean streets of Bend, Oregon is that they were reasonably good
We played a KILLER show with the Subset band we had with Sir Mixalot in Bend at some sort of brewery kinda place...one of the best, most out of control shows I've ever been part of.
