Green Book won because the Academy loves stuff about about race relations. I think the three most probable contenders are Ford vs. Ferrari, Little Women and The Irishman
It was pretty good, but overall it was pretty underwhelming as far as plot and everything goes. The editing was great and it was engaging though, but man, I could never see it being best picture, it's pretty much just there as filler... Or an advert for Ford

Adam said the same but just in a diplomatic way man. He literally talked about how they Todd copied everything and the score was repetitive/forgetable(the same sound was half the soundtrack...). Then he also realized, its a near shot for shot remake of King Of Comedy. As in, the writing and directing was not unique at all. Joaquin Phoenix is the only reason its a decent film, and a 6/10 at that. The script is so shallow, that it felt like it was 20 pages long. So when people say that Joker was "deep" or "important commentary", it definitely does make you seem extremely immature. Up against something like Parasite, it looks even worse than a 6/10. Sohow much better is it to be a fan of Joker instead of BvS? Adam definitely has some stronger feelings on how uninteresting Joker is, but he cant say them (he basically said everything isn''t good except Joaquin though but has to give it a 6/10) because the majority of his fans would 100% freak out.
@@boppob1343 if people find the movie deep or have important commentary, they are the ones who are immature, and not those who claim they are immature because their opinion doesn't fit yours? Not everyone has seen King of Comedy, even Adam hasn't seen it, that's why he actually gave it a 7. And not once did Adam give a movie a 6, just because one actor was great. If you honestly think, that a 6 out of 10 movie for Adam is the one where only 1 thing works, then you clearly haven't watched anything from Adam. And what does Parasite has to do with Joker? Is it like the new level of comparison, where 2 films are being compared even though they have nothing in common, other than "they say something about society"? P.S. So you think Adam doesn't have the balls to rate a movie lower than 6 out of 10, because he is afraid of his fans? That's a really disrespectful view of him. Impressively disrespectful.
@@boppob1343 Joker being heavily inspired by other character study movies doesn't actively make the movie worse. Drive and Baby Driver were both excellent films, and they both carry some of their dna from a movie called The Driver. Hotline Miami is also directly inspired by Drive, and that game is great. You should consider judging a film on it's own merits and only comparing and contrasting to see the strengths and weaknesses of different films. Also, your comment shows a lack of faith in Adam's reviews. I honestly doubt you've seen his stuff for long, if you think he is going to dish a decent score to appease fanboys. If you can't accept that he thought there were good things to Joker, that's your problem.
BoppoB inspired is not a bad thing. The Dark Knight can also be considered as the product of Drive and Seven if I take out Heath Ledger's Joker, but then again it is considered to be the best movie of the decade and one of the best movies of all time. People who r attacking Joker on shit like this need to know that Todd Phillips himself considers the film to be an homage to old Scorcese films. In fact almost every film can be categorised as a copy if the same logic that these people use is applied to other films.
While I definetly agree that most of the nominations for joker are rather debatable, the score is an obvious choice. It fits the movie perfectly, and on its own its just a great piece of music, emotional, going from slow and melancholic to just booming loud, which compliments the actions of Joker really well.
While I enjoyed Joker’s score, I appreciated more from 1917’s based on two things: 1) I’ve never been a fan of Newman’s scores prior to this, and don’t even find his “best of music” to be that great like American Beauty. This is the only score he’s done that I can make a good case on why this one worked compared to his other works (including the scores he’s done for Mendes’ past films). 2) I felt that in the past scores Newman has done, one of my main gripes is that he’s either not challenging himself enough or isn’t doing something different. I loved how each track provides a variety of instruments & didn’t rely on prerequisite music (except for one, but it’s done in a different tempo). I understand YMS’ point of view, and totally get where he’s coming from or if anyone else didn’t like the score. It just surprised me that this is NOW the first time that I loved Thomas Newman’s work on the film.

In terms of getting snubbed by the Oscars, The Lighthouse is this year's Hereditary. Apart from cinematography, it deserved actor nominations for both Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, also score, production design and maybe editing. Hereditary didn't even get one nomination. It also deserved actress for Toni Collette, production design, cinematography, editing, maybe sound. Midsommar got snubbed either. Actress for Florence Pugh, cinematography, production design, maybe editing... It's such a shame that, at the Oscars, horror movies don't get the respect they deserve
@@BigBossMan538 Get Out only got attention by the Academy for identity politics. I feel it deserved the attention despite that, but the Academy is a mix of a highly prejudiced people and overly woke people dueling it it out.
I didn't check it out because I figured it doesn't tell anything much deeper or different than a lot of movies that have already explored marriage. Something tells me this is going to be another Boyhood, where I've been through a horrible childhood and had to watch this character who has it all, faking some struggle. I don't know why but I already know this film is about relationship drama that is probably boring but the target audience (middle aged people) never get these feelings out of their chest and consider it a masterpiece.
@Stellvia Hoenheim You seem to be confused sir. You thought I said Scott's cock of the week, but I actually said Scott's lock of the week. It's a common misconception so it's not a big deal.
The fact that Midsommar wasn't nominated for cinematography is disgusting. I guess it's got some gore on it so it doesn't count as a movie...? The Oscars suck
I think Uncut Gems got snubbed because of Adam Sandler. The industry doesn't seem to respect him. The Safdie Bros probably should have gotten nominated for Best Director, possibly over Todd Phillips.
In reference to the Joker: "I didn't really remember the score..." You're kidding! That score still resonates in my skull. I thought it was a HUGE factor in setting that isolated and melancholic tone
Sean L I’m not a big fan of the movie overall but that score is haunting and amazing. ‘Call me Joker’ and ‘Penny to the Hospital’ are two of the best pieces of score of the last few years
Yeah the crashing sound before he kills Murray that was really good, the almost sound of a human breaking and severing the last tie he had to I guess good and happiness.
Lupita was the biggest snub in the acting categories. She totally made that movie for me and sold most of its emotions. She’s was to US what Phoenix was to Joker
i would counter that argument by saying Willem Dafoe was the biggest acting snub. I do not personally agree with the statement referring to Joaquin, however I do agree she gave a great performance. I would prefer her to Charlize Theron in bombshell to be nominated however
Replace Ford V Ferrari with The Lighthouse, add Uncut Gems and boom a list of 10 incredible nominations. Rooting for Jojo, Parasite or OUATIH to win tonight
It's weird tho, most of it's score is either that one repetitive sound used for effect or old songs that very well fit the theme, but might not "count" as a sound track.
Driver 2900 That was kind of my take too. Tbh I’m not really a fan of scores that just replay the same track the whole time. I literally just remember a violin playing the same two notes over and over.
joker was a fucking joke. someone in hollywood should learn a thing or two about depression and mental health... also I find funny that to make a "oscar comic book movie" they had to pervert everything in a comic book. like "comic book are cool just as long they are nothing like comic book?"
1r0zz I mean, the Joker doesn’t really outright suffer from depression as you know it. He’s more so just miserable with his life. (I’m trusting you to know the difference since a weird amount of people don’t) Plus, the movie isn’t really about comic book Joker It’s about a much more realistic version of the Joker that’s very loosely based on the comics. (Like how he’s a poor, aspiring comedian in ‘The Killing Joke’ or how he gets invited onto a talk show before committing a horrible act in ‘Dark Knight Returns’) Like, yeah, I’ll always love my Joker who cackles and violently melts people’s faces off with acid from his flower and leaves explosive chattering teeth lying around for Batman. And I definitely want that shit done in a live action movie! But they let us know that the movie was definitely NOT going to be about the traditional Joker the instant they released the make-up test footage online, so let’s not pretend like it was a complete shock that the movie was as different as it was. Plus, lets be honest here, as much as I’m sure you and I love comic books and comic book films, they’re just not Oscar material. They’re just not. I mean, I personally think that the Oscars are questionable anyways, but comic book movies are always restricted to being too tied down to their comic book history and fan service. Hell! The fucking Dark Knight, the comic book movie everyone loves and swoons for, took some STRONG liberties with the characters. I love Heath Ledgers Joker, but don’t try to tell me he’s the same Joker that I grew up reading stories of.
probably the only ones it deserves. no matter how much I love Joker I cannot say it deserves movie of the year over something like Parasite or marriage story. The score and lead actor is what carries the film so if it gets anything its gonna get those

Willem Dafoe getting snubbed for The Lighthouse is one of the most egregious snubs in Oscar history. His performance was extraordinary and he completely transformed for that role! It's completely unacceptable he didn't get nominated!!
My snubs Midsommar: should have received-in a perfect world-best cinematography and best actress for Florence Pugh at LEAST (although she was nominated for Little Women so whatever, her talent has been noticed) I personally thought it was the best film of 2019. Uncut Gems: best actor for sure, Adam Sandler’s performance blew me away and I was shocked that the Grown Ups guy pulled that out. Also best cinematography, editing, and music nominations were well-deserved here. All this being said, I’m not really upset by anything that actually got nominated. The most it will take is 2, I think. Joaquin is a lock for Best Actor, and Hildur has not lost a single precursor for Best Score. But everything else is a HUGE long-shot.
I think it’s interesting that you didn’t connect personally with Little Women but still saw the value of the film and were able to appreciate how it was made because that is exactly how my dad and other men in my life felt about it. For me, a young woman, i REALLY connected with it to the point where I could it stop thinking about it for weeks and had to see it multiple times, something that almost every woman I know who saw it felt in some capacity. I think it captures really perfectly the experiences of just growing up. That’s a story that’s told all the time, but not often about women. It felt so freeing in a way to watch it. I especially loved how it depicted a “strong woman” as not just a woman holding typically masculine characteristics like Jo, but showed that femininity has a completely different type of strength, but is just as valuable.

"I would rather be honest than pretend to love something that I don't." Word.
Adam: You are not wrong for liking a movie.
Ralph: If you like Joker, you are a 14 yo BvS fan.

Half of the score was fantastic and the other half was awful.

In terms of getting snubbed by the Oscars, The Lighthouse is this year's Hereditary. joker was a fucking joke. someone in hollywood should learn a thing or two about depression and mental health...
also I find funny that to make a "oscar comic book movie" they had to pervert everything in a comic book. like "comic book are cool just as long they are nothing like comic book?"
1r0zz I mean, the Joker doesn’t really outright suffer from depression as you know it. He’s more so just miserable with his life. (I’m trusting you to know the difference since a weird amount of people don’t)
Plus, the movie isn’t really about comic book Joker It’s about a much more realistic version of the Joker that’s very loosely based on the comics. (Like how he’s a poor, aspiring comedian in ‘The Killing Joke’ or how he gets invited onto a talk show before committing a horrible act in ‘Dark Knight Returns’)
Like, yeah, I’ll always love my Joker who cackles and violently melts people’s faces off with acid from his flower and leaves explosive chattering teeth lying around for Batman.
@@piranha5506 he doesn't remember it. I don't care if he likes it or not, but you can at least pretend that you watched the movie if you are going to rate it. I was calling out his laziness, not his opinion.
But yeah, I'm very biased, so that's why it annoys me. He can hate it, but at least acknowledge it. Plus, it won the Oscar, so maybe he'll remember it now.
I can't wait for Sunday, this should be interesting - Oh I mean the live steam, not The Oscars...
Oh yeah, can we get something better than these award tv shows? I mean I think Rotten Tomatos users' (not critic) poll feels more awarding to get a good score than The Oscars.
mmmmmmm Steamed lives
#MeToo
Emma Stone wasn't nominated for best picture wtf
2019 nominations was a joke
2020 they remembered they are supposed to be like high class or something maybe
😂Yep
Green Book winning was such a good meme though
Idk, there were just better movies than last year, which makes it easier to pic "best movies". The winner will still be the war one or ford v ferrari.
@@PalitoSelvatico at least those aren't as oscar-baity as Vice or Green Book lol
The movies from this year were also just way better.
Jesus, that horror 'Cats' image caught me off guard and is instant nightmare food…
I'm so glad that Joker didn't win the Best Picture. Joker is very exaggerated and i'm surprised it got Best Picture nomination. It's a good movie but i feel like without Joaquin Phoenix, the movie is kinda meh. And i don't get why people were so mad because Parasite won the Best Picture. The movie was superior than Joker in every way. Just why ? It's not woke agenda that Parasite won. The movie won because it's the best film of 2019 and i'm very surprised that it won. The word "Woke" is meaningless at this point. It's overused, like the word "Literally" and it sucks, bro.
Ohh LanLa Same. The amount of Oscar nominations that Joker had just felt like the academy going ‘OK FINE WE’LL APPEAL TO THE YOUNGSTERS SEE WE CAN DO IT’.
I think it should've won screenplay cinematography and director
The Lighthouse getting snubbed is outrageous but the Oscars are lame and irrelvant so *shrug. I love your Oscar commentaries though so looking forward to that!
Snubs not already mentioned:
Rocketman: Not a perfect movie but a very original one that took chances, had a great lead performance, and was much better than Bohemian Rhapsody
Knives Out: Every character was unique, interesting and realistically portrayed, and the clever editing planted hints while keeping the story fast-paced and entertaining.
(I also think Lighthouse and Uncut Gems were snubbed, but those were already mentioned by Adum)
Hard agree to Knives Out. At least Rocketman got best original song though!
11:02 "There is 'Parasite' by Joon Ho Bong."
Bong Joon Ho: "Am I a joke to you?"
He's just saying his first name first, you can do that.
@@epik151 that's not how Korean name works
@@bigmass4792 Bong is his last name. In Korea, it does come first, but it's not some rule that you're not allowed to say his first name first.
@@epik151 you meant surname. Also you don't have to westernise everything
Epik let’s just call him Pitt brad then. And trump Donald. Obama Barack.
Adum, you are nearing your maximum allotment for use of the word, “derivative”, due to this video. You have been warned.
Here’s a question. How do you determine if something is directed well?
ol the way the final product comes together. The voice the film has which includes a combination of how actors work off each other, the camera movement, what’s edited, how music is used, etc.
Furry Jellyfish yeah I know what it involves. I just wanted to know from Adam, how he judges it; maybe great films have been directed badly and still work. How can the audience know what was direction, and what was just other departments doing their jobs superbly?
