  • While living off grid, kitchen appliances will have to be different. Having a limited amount of solar power brings the opportunity to utilize a few appliances while cooking.

Hey, I noticed you are canning beans.
My canning info says not to can beans.
So my question is how long is required????
I hope you understand what I'm asking.
Is it 1.5 hours like meat? longer? or less.
First my mom canned fruits when I was young.
And for a couple years. I kept sitting on the fence. I have 3 pressure cookers.
This past winter I finally started canning.
And found out also that I can finally cook beans with a pressure cooker.
However, I'd like to cook up a lot of beans and can them. Since its time consuming.
FYI I have been trying to cook beans for over 20 years. lol. Never getting them right.
But now I can finally cook them.
I was going to try soon. To can them anyway.
But since I seen you doing it. Though it would be good to ask you the time required.
Oh I should introduce myself. look at this thread next comment.

Hello. I'm a 15 year plus off gridder.
      I'm 55 years old.
I'm retired Army. And have been doing most this my whole life. Yeap even most my years in the Army I was raising livestock and stuff.
I now own 640 acres with my cabin in Southern New Mexico.
My water is by rain catch.
And I set on a small pocket of crude oil that's all mine. roughly 2 million gallons. Too small for any oil company.
My rain is only about 2 hours in a year..
I use lead acid Deep cycle marine batteries in my solar system because they can be rebuilt.
I use oil, propane for heat and cooking
I also use a solar oven.
I also have a big dehydration system. Powder by wind and sun ( the old fashioned way) There isn't much I haven't dehydrated.
I would be happy to share how to do a off grid no power free dry method. That I learned. And would like for someone to make a video on it. I learned it by mistake and works with fruits and vegetables.
I'm looking into a stand alone single burner electric stove and toaster oven. That will be powdered by solar. ( 120v with invertor) Because I forsee propane and other fuels going up a lot more.
And I can only get 1 quart of crude at a time. in a old fashion wish well type operation. And its 400 feet of winding rope each time.
There is more. its just not coming to me at the time.
I did notice you all been doing this for 10 years. So you are not new to this.
      Maybe we can share experience.
I will be looking over your videos for new ideas and other ways of doing things. I'm always open to learning. Even if it a different way.

When I was living offgrid, I had a common whisk, that the handle came off. Rather than throw it out, I charged up my clean, battery powered, Makita drill and inserted the now all metal whisk, into the drill slots, put it on low speed and had a battery powered kitchen mixer! Could whip eggwhites, batter breads and whipped cream easily!

You can cook anything in cast iron. It only gets rusty if you don't keep it seasoned. Use salt as an abrasive to clean it. When it's clean put it on a burner on the stove and heat it up to evaporate the water. Let it cool down and oil it with cooking oil.

    • @stephycarver
      @stephycarver Před 5 lety +8

I agree! I have used cast iron exclusively for over 30 years and have never had a problem unless it’s not cared for properly. I’ve tried the enamel coated ones and am not fond of them at all. I find that the food sticks easily and eventually the enamel chips, cracks and stains.

Hello from TN! I was raised as you live now! Dutch oven cooking is great! Cornmeal fritters in a cast iron skillet!! I still have most of my Mothers iron skillets, I have 2 Sisters, we shared! I can still make coffee in a percolator! But use an electric coffeemaker! Unless the power is off!
We didn't have indoor water until I was 15/16 years old! I'm 67 now. Outside toilet until the same age. I guess we were "poor", but I'm glad I was raised that way! Blessed by GOD! I can cook on a campfire just about as good as on a stove, although I don't have to!! I wish I had a treadle sewing machine! Life would be complete!

It would be startling if the grid went down, but I feel that in a few days I'd be used to being without electricity. Not as convenient, but doable!
I have a root cellar, fruit trees, nut trees, berries and more! I come from a long line of herbalists. Nature provides! I keep honeybees, chickens and rabbits. I think I'd like goats and pigs! I'm getting older, but not giving up! I will have a small greenhouse by spring! I have regular grapes, but I just received my Muscadine grapes the other day!! I have to get them planted!!

I miss it and enjoy hearing from you - puts me in touch with one who likes to do the same things. Try electric percolaters. When my die hard Mr. Coffee insistant hubby had yet another in his lifetime quit...I ended up researching electric percolaters. Inexpensive to operate. Very simple machines to easily clean. And the coffee smells like good ol' 'roadhouse coffee'. My hubby found one in a big box store on discount as it was missing the bottom part to sit the unit on. We used a stone like hotpad. Worked out nicely. My stubborn hubby was instantly converted. Used less energy and also less coffee grounds than the tanker mr.coffee. The unit shuts off immediately after it's percolation.

My mother had cast iron skillet which she used daily. She stated cooking in them added iron to your diet. Stove top perculators, coffee and grain grinders mills can still be purchased along with a hand driven blender.

Hello from Northern Australia! I use my crockpot insert in my solar oven. I removed the plastic knob off the lid so it doesn't melt. Sure, it takes longer for the insert to heat up but I just leave it in the solar oven all day and it has worked out perfect every time. My solar oven has been a very good investment.

I got rid of the thin glass and plastic added lid to my crockpot. Went to the thrift store, after measuring the size...a bit to large like 1/4 or 1/2 inch and a cranberry colored lid,, doesn't have a vent hole like the other cheapy lids which for me is useless. I figure the heavier lid is more energy efficient.

Good to see you enjoying these things, like a blender, and stuff people might forget are kind of special and fun. Living in the woods kind of, things like blenders, toasters, coffee makers are more fun, something like play, when they are known as not so necessary. Me and Dad, we used the coffee drip cone, and liked the electric coffee maker too. My Dad was so happy to get a toaster. He got a blender when we finally could get a blender, and he made good stuff with it. These are meaningful to us, to me, meaning we are together, signs of Love and beloved. Whatever you have or don’t have, life is wonderful when there’s the one you Love.

New sub from Elizabeth City NC. I've been fully off grid for close to 2 years now. Can't afford electricity or running water. I cook and heat using bottled gas, and bring in water for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and toilet use. It's really liberating to know how to go about doing things like preparing meats and veggies so they keep without refrigeration. Through other channels, and locals, I've even learned how to make mayo that will keep for close to 2 months without having to use refrigeration. During the summer months, I've even made a permanent rocket stove outside so as to not heat up the house. Thank you for your time and consideration.

hi! was watching you video and thought of a couple of things you might want to check out. both items are mexican cooking items which may be hard to come by, but not impossible - firstly is comal which is a flat cast iron pan that is thinner than a traditional cast iron pan, and thus heats very fast and toasts bread in minutes once warm. this pan can be used to make meats, pancakes, tortillas, etc on as well and they come in various sizes. secondly is the mexican pestle and mortar (molcajete) which is made from stone, large in scale and can make raw salsa in shorter time than it would if you chopped it up. the cool thing about the molcajete is that you can heat it up in the oven or grill and use it to make warm or cooked salsas and sauces too.

We are on grid so we have a few more things in our kitchen but I use our off grid gadgets more often. Financially it wouldn’t make us sense getting solar since our power bill is so low because we don’t use it much otherwise we both would like to have solar. Love love love our wood cook stove. Thanks for sharing and inspiring others like our family. Shalom!

Immersion blenders are awesome. I've been trying to get all the things together for making soap. The only thing left that I need is an immersion blender. It's the one thing that is a most expensive to make soap or use it in your kitchen for preparing other things. I've been watching your channel for a while and enjoy the cooking part. Thank you for awesome videos take care and God bless. Deb
