    Long time when I did start with scale models, my spare time was dedicated 100% to aircraft's, fighter jets to be more precise. But I both 3 sport car models from tamiya, vehicles that I was completely fan, Renault 5 Turbo Rally from 1981/82. Formula 1 Williams Honda FW 11, 1986 from Brasilian pilot Nelson Piquet. And finely Subaru Impreza Rally Safary 98. The boxes were on the shelve for the past 15 years. I didn't want to " destroy' vintage kit's, but now I feel that is possible to do a good work, with all the useful information provided on this channel.
    Thank's everyone who makes this videos possible

    I am really curious what your thoughts are on a single action external mix airbrush for car modelling. I know that the best modelers and airbrushers alike would all have a high end setup...but it seems to me that so many car modelers are so attached to that Paasche model H. Have you tried going back in time to see if that airbrush can actually deliver for simple projects like a car body?

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke Před rokem +1

      Nothing. Primer is just used by "pros" for the best possible paint results. You can skip primer and go straight to the top coat if you like, BUT if you are painting a light color on a dark molded plastic, it is best to use a light colored primer first so the top coat will be as bright and as close as possible to the intended color--most paints are slightly transparent, and are more so in light coats, and you WANT light coats because light coats do not obscure details.

    Awesome instructional videos. Preparation is absolutely key for the best result. A little off topic here though I discovered an old kit of a BMW with the the one piece clear part for the window glass was actually cracked probably from storage for too much time and it's little brittle now is there any remedy for that glue maybe some Polish and try to reduce the appearance of therepaired crack or perhaps buy some thin clear styrene and heat shrink it to the shape and try to use that as a replacement any suggestions.

    Thanks for this. I've got an AC Cobra kit which was a present from a friend and I really don't want to mess it up lol. As a youngster I build aircraft and cat kits but normally painted them with a brush. I do remember when masking things off I seemed to lift the edge of the paint when removing the masking. Also when I did try a spray can I'd get an odd blob of paint spit out of the can which was infuriating.

    I am completely new at building model cars and i have a few questions:
    1. Does the primer have to be the same color as the color you want to paint the car?
    2. Where can you buy the special spray paint and primer and does it have to be the same brand as you are using?
    3. Where can you buy the "sanding sticks".
    4. Where can you find that model car stand you were using , or something similar?

    • @TheScalemodelingChannel
      @TheScalemodelingChannel  Před 8 lety +9

      +Jim Dayton 1. No, but the lighter the color the lighter the primer should be, as it will be easier to cpver the primer.
      2. It does not have to be the same brand, i just find it works really well. They should be available in a good hobby store or otherwise ebay.
      3. have a look on ebay
      4. it is a tamiya spray stand, again try ebay.

    • @rickshaw6198
      @rickshaw6198 Před 6 lety +9

      Jim Dayton you don't really need primer at all unless you are covering up some body work or are using a "transparent" paint that requires a different color base than the plastic itself. Most paints chemically bond to plastic, and all primer does is cover up detail, and cause more undue and un-needed work that will result in a second rate paint job. DON'T PRIME. Also I notice you asked where he got the model in the video...you just want one to practice on right? Buy on sale models at hobbylinc.com, or go to hobby lobby and use a perpetual online 40% off coupon. That way you can by 30 dollar models for 18.

      The Tamiya brand primer if a lacquer based primer that adheres very well to plastic. This particular product is thinner than regular spray so it lays down very thinly which dry very quickly. and is designed specifically for plastic models. Regular spray paint id for general use and it applies much thicker, and isn't recommended for models.

    • @williamgottlieb8723
      @williamgottlieb8723 Před 5 lety +1

      I have used Krylon brand spray primer on plastic model kits. It is cheap and can be found in many stores that have a hardware section. One thing though, the paint dissolves plastic! As long as you start off by spraying in very light passes from the start, you will be fine. Any heavy runs will definitely eat through the styrene, so just take your time. There is also white primer that can be used but gray is better to see the details with. After that, there is an incredible amount of different colors, metallics and clear coats made by this company that can be used and are much cheaper than paints from the model kit companies.

      @@TheScalemodelingChannel I wouild disagree . There are very good chrome paints available that can replicate chrome in aerosol cans or airbrush . one paint being in the Alclad range. The chrome has to be first removed with oven cleaner from the part . This is best done by putting the part in a plastic bag and spraying the oven cleaner onto the chrome plated part. Seal the bag and leave for 30 minutes . Take part out with rubber gloves to avoid acid harm to skin. Place part under water and the chrome plating should wash off. . If it dosent repeat the procedure . Make sure the oven cleaner dosent come into contact with your skin or eyes.

      1, if you want to paint them with spray paint or an airbrush, yes.
      2, if you are going to mask and paint them in multiple colors, yes. otherwise, no not realy
      3, with sandpaper......

    I just started building a Mustang GT boss 2013 .... It is my first build.
    I have a question why do we need primer?
    I don't use primer on the body but only the paint ant clear coat what happens?
    I already did that...and some bubbles have appeared on the surface u one looks really care fully.
    I yet have to do the clear coat. So was curious once the clear coat is applied will these bubbles go away and what should be poles done to get rid of that.
    I really want it to be perfect

    • @TheScalemodelingChannel
      @TheScalemodelingChannel  Před 6 lety

      First off, the first kit or model you build. Will not be perfect. Heck the 10th or 100th will not even be. You learn by doing. And by doing it over and over again. Don’t focus on perfection. Youll loose onterrest fast. Really fast!
      Primer helps the paint stick to the plastic. So is id needed. No, do i highly advise it to achieve a better smoother and stronger finish? Yes.
      The bubbles will not go away after the clear most likely. Clear is a transparant paint. That will mostly just make it glossy and not fix imperfections.

    But what do you do at the doors demarcations. What paint do you use and how do you proceed to feel all the grooves. Exemple: a very thinned black or dark gay whit a brush, touching the gap with it so that the paint flows along the grooves

      Rustoleum is an enamel paint (as long as it says so on the can, there are other formulations). The only model paint that is damaging to bare plastic is lacquer paints--they will craze or etch the plastic but not turn it into a puddle of melted plastic.

    • @TheScalemodelingChannel

      The bubble come when you paint to thick and quick. Spray thin mist coats. not heavy thick coats. When you spray the first layer, or do the first pass on one side and think.... mmmmm i can do that again!, Don't!!!!! just let it dry and do it again after 10 or 15 minutes. When using spray cans, thin coats is the way to go!! if you go thick(this happens realy realy fast! you will get runs, bubbles etc etc....
      Just sand it all donw with some P400 or P600 Grit and start again ;)
