The McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems MD 500 Defender is a light multi-role military helicopter based on the MD 500 light utility helicopter.
The original OH-6 Cayuse helicopter proved its worth during the Vietnam War in the light helicopter role. The designers at Hughes realized there was a market for a light multi-mission helicopter with an improved equipment fit than the OH-6 and Model 500M. The resulting design was the Model 500MD Defender which first flew in 1976. It was tailored for specific roles including unarmed observation and an armed scout helicopter equipped with TOW anti-tank missiles. An anti-submarine version was developed with a search radar, magnetic anomaly detector and the capability to carry lightweight aerial torpedoes.

Ilmavoimat 100 vuotta -juhlalentonäytös järjestettiin Tikkakoskella 16.-17. kesäkuuta 2018. Tapahtuma keräsi yleisöä kahden päivän aikana jopa 26 000 innokkaan taivaalle tähyäjän verran. Näytöksen aikana yleisö pääsi ihailemaan lukuisia erilaisia esityslentoja sekä historiallisilta lentokonetyypeiltä että tämän päivän moderneimmilta huippuhävittäjiltä, jotka ovat mukana Suomen Hornetin seuraajahankkeen tarjouskilpailussa. Myös maanäyttelyssä oli esillä runsaasti lentokalustoa 100-vuotiaan ilmavoimien eri aikakausilta. Lisäksi mukana oli muun muassa ulkomaalaisia ilma-aluksia, helikoptereita sekä ilmatorjuntakalustoa.
Finnish Air Force 100th Anniversary Air Show took place in Tikkakoski, Central Finland from 16 to 17 June 2018. During the weekend the event was attended by 26,000 visitors who saw a selection of aircraft from Air Force past and present. Also candidates for the Finnish F/A-18 Hornet Multi-Role fighter replacement programme, known as HX Programme, showed their capabilities in Tikkakoski
Jyväskylä Airport was originally built as a base for the Air Force in 1939. Today, the majority of the airport’s traffic still comes from the flight training of the Air Force Academy, which is located nearby at Tikkakoski. The airport also serves on a broad scale the lively university city of Jyväskylä and the municipality of Central Finland.

Great I'm back again observing how well the Helio pilot is maneuvering the MD-500 as one of my favorite Helicopter and I would love to get a opportunity to flying one at a hover. Let me know when he can demonstrate the ability to pickup a cone

Flew the type in the military. Fun. Always wondered what would be like having a rigid rotor head, on that fuselage, knowing what it can do. Very nice.
Yeah I reckon they'd be the aerobatic helo of choice over the BO105 if they had a rigid head!

ARMY AVIATION at its best ! OH-6A loach
I love Apocalypse now, they have some great scenes with the OH-6A with Lee Ermy as the pilot.
He definitely flies 3D R/C Heli's lol.
Great Chopper (especially without guns & rockets. I prefer the civil versions) but this is a MD 530-F Model and not a 500 in my opinion.
Because of the nose which isn’t round like,
for example, the round - shaped cockpit of a military little bird?! Also: this 🚁 = 👍🏼😊🤙🏼
The angled nose was introduced on the 500E. The 530F is considered a model 500 helicopter but with a more powerful engine for better hot and high performance.
They are hard to tell apart, but in addition to the more powerful engine, the F has longer main rotor blades and a longer tail boom to accommodate them.
