You rock for having footage from the old musical Peter Pan! I haven't seen that for almost 18 years! That was the first version of Peter Pan that I saw. I loved it more than the Disney one. Great video! You're great at teaching things to others!
"Remember when I talked about the hook?" "I. HATE. PETAH PAN!!!!!" XD I laughed so hard. This whole video is hilarious. I love Lyrics 101. :D These videos are super helpful because my friend and I are writing a musical comedy.
Ok, it's decided, I'm having Brent's "Omnomnom" as a ringtone XD I like it when someone with a certain talent takes time to offer their knowledge, what a great guy brentalfloss really is CB
Brentalfloss, you're the shit. I seriously learned more in this video than I have the past 3 weeks taking upright bass lessons. Also, "Under the Sea" is such a good song. Thanks for taking the time to dissect it.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, Brentalman. I've always wanted to learn about this kinda thing but yknow ... it's hard to find the time or motivation to do it. Just wanted to let you know it's Brentalppreciated.
Professor Floss is the coolest. Not only do I learn the best ways to create lyrics but you always make it uber entertaining. I'm gonna bring you an apple tomorrow at part 2.
Holy crap thank you so much Brent, this video was helpful in so many more ways than the last two (not that the other two WERN'T) because my lyrics which shall become a song for my girlfriend's and my anniversary seem to fit each and every single point regarding verses, chorus...'s... and bridges! You are a big help to me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart, if that even counts for anything. ^^ b
Brent performing "Under the Sea". The world is complete now. Also, thanks. Even for those of us who don't go for songwriting (which i think are the vast majority), this is very interesting and educational ^^
I'm certainly no lyricist or the like. But as a fan of music, I've certainly learned a lot about the structure of lyrical music. This series has added another whole dimension in the way I experience the music I love.
New Lyrics 101? Sixteen minutes long? Reference to my favorite Disney movie? -And- singing and playing? Brent, I know you weren't intending it, but this is the best birthday present I've gotten this year! :)
Thank you Brent. My withdrawal of Captain Hook has been sated. For the next five years. I will give some thought to an actual assignment, because I want to participate this time. Hopefully, with you great instruction, I might actually get somewhere. Even if I, or your fans, don't seem to, we all appreciate these videos very much and I will continue to watch them in the years. Thank you brentalhook, I mean, brentalfloss.
Oh my god, Floss, you have made my life, showing that clip from the Peter Pan stage play. I had that on VHS as a kid taped from TV, commercials and all. I watched it a million times. You have no idea. But all I remember is Peter Pan's shadow being basically a stocking and Hook sitting on a mushroom-stove-top-pipe (or something) and jumping off surprised. Do you happen to know any details about the play? A specific title, any details that might lead me to a video on the wide wide interwebs?
nice little shameless advertisement of your Mega Man 2 with Lyrics with the "But Why?" :) loving the lessons, even if for just the knowledge expansion.
Did you speed up the video or something when you sang under the sea? I was watching you play the keyboard, and the notes you were hitting weren't the same as what came out (example: you hit a C but I heard a B). Just something I noticed, great video btw! :D
Though I'm not much of a musician, I still find these really interesting. Wish you taught music at my school, I might not be such an uncultured idiot if I didn't have some crusty old guy yelling at me. Oh, and the Cake at the end was epic, more of that!
b/c of this vid, I sang "under the sea" @ a Karaoke medical brigade fundraiser this evening. fun song to sing, esp da part sebastion sounds like he's rapping, 'di newt play di flute, di brass play di bass...etc."
I'm not genuinely interested in writing lyrics myself (and logically shouldn't have any interest in this video), but Brent is just so damn good at making it interesting!
11:13 Chorus Prime!! Lol!! Bet the view count for the original under the sea went way up after this vid, I had to watch it again! ;) Man, what an awesome class!
Brent, I live down the street from Sam Wright, the voice of Sebastian the crab. Honestly, I do. And I know for a fact that he would enjoy your singing his song with an accent and everything. He's a nice guy. :3
I will always love Stickshifts and Safetybelts more than Under the Sea. Actually, I prefer Cake to most Disney songs, with the exception of most of the Tarzan soundtrack. Of course, this does not negate the educational value of the video, or the credibility of the teacher. Thanks for being awesome, Brent!
Quick question. The second chorus was noted as the prime chorus because of its length. Yet the final chorus also had a different length, what makes it so that the second chorus is the prime and not the final? Love your work by the way, keep it up.
Hey brentalfloss, I'm loving the series. I love to write parody lyrics but I haven't had any real writing education at all. Anyways, quick question: isn't 99 bottles an AABA song? A: "99 bottles of beer on the wall" A: "99 bottles of beer" B: "You take one down and pass it around" A: "99 bottles of beer on the wall"
I can't believe how many internet people I like like The Little Mermaid, when I watched it recently and thought it was mostly too immature for audiences over the age of 11 or so.
If I may make a recommendation; when giving examples, is there any chance for you to reference your own music more often. I know a lot of music, but you still manage to lose me (and presumably other fans) with songs I've never of. Now, I've heard every one of your songs, so I believe I'd have an easier time understanding your teachings with more recognizable examples such as any of your "With Lyrics" songs. Now, I'm not asking you to use it all over the place, just little throw-ins. Thanks.
@Brentalfloss, Do you still work with kids on this stuff? I know you posted a video a local news crew did a story on you. If you still are, you'r extremely admirable.
@joannerryan Dude, I love that man so hard. Best pop composer of our time, methinks. I just wish Howard Ashman hadn't died... they had at least a few more hits in them.
DAMNIT IT, BRENTALBEARD, THANKS TO THIS VIDEO I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO DISNEY SONGS THE ENTIRE PAST WEEK. Under da sea... under da sea... we got no troubles, life is de bubbles... under da sea... ;~; (also don't you hate it when you press post and then see a major spelling or grammatical error? I do...)
Is this aa or ab? This is the song that never ends, It just goes on and on, my friends. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was, And now they can't stop singing it forever just because
If i do a song that goes Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, guitar solo, higher pitched Chorus, is the guitar solo only conisdered the brige or is the guitar solo and the last higher pitched chorus considered the brige?
@showfool first A:" 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer! You take one down, pass it around, 98 bottles of beer on the wall" Second A:"98 bottles of beer on the wall, 98 bottles of beer! You take one down, pass it around, 97 bottles of beer on the wall!". etc. etc.
But Brentalfloss I'm confused! In one of your newer videos it told us that you were currently accepting fanmail and song suggestions to different places, but said nothing (as far as I could see) where to send the Lyrics 101 assignments. Where do they go?
A. U wonder Y the vid. is so long w\ all the added (though entertaining) clips. 2. I was actually waiting for a Who Framed Roger Rabbit reference when talking about bridges. Triangle. "Hey, where did you get that awesome Mega A shirt¿"
Kids don't drink beer! :D - great :D A good example for modern voice / chorus song is f**k you by cee lo green Great Video Brentalfloss - really enjoying every one you do =)
A song where the Chorus seems to change a lot would be like Simple Math by Manchester Orchestra. I don't mean to plug it, but it is kinda awesome, but how does it go with the "little changing" of a chorus? Is that another example of black belt stuff because neither the verses nor the choruses seem to have a huge amount of pattern.
@joannerryan that was a ridiculously vague comment because i didn't mention that i was in an Alan Menkin daydream and thinking about "Little Shop of Horrors."
You rock for having footage from the old musical Peter Pan! I haven't seen that for almost 18 years! That was the first version of Peter Pan that I saw. I loved it more than the Disney one.
Great video! You're great at teaching things to others!
"Remember when I talked about the hook?"
"I. HATE. PETAH PAN!!!!!"
XD I laughed so hard. This whole video is hilarious. I love Lyrics 101. :D These videos are super helpful because my friend and I are writing a musical comedy.
When you inserted your "BUT WHY" from Mega Man 2 With Lyrics, I burst out giggling.
"It's better down where it's wetter."
Ok, it's decided, I'm having Brent's "Omnomnom" as a ringtone XD
I like it when someone with a certain talent takes time to offer their knowledge, what a great guy brentalfloss really is CB
Yes! A reference to Mary Martin's Peter Pan (and, more importantly, the Hook from the movie)! It makes me so happy! That guy is sooooo much fun!
What another great video, informative and hilarious- great editing and content Brentalfloss, keep em coming.
Your genuine enthusiasm is just plain awesome!
Professor Floss is the coolest. Not only do I learn the best ways to create lyrics but you always make it uber entertaining. I'm gonna bring you an apple tomorrow at part 2.
Woo can't wait for more episodes of this.
I don't really plan on applying these lessons to anywhere, but I like listening to you teach.
Holy crap thank you so much Brent, this video was helpful in so many more ways than the last two (not that the other two WERN'T) because my lyrics which shall become a song for my girlfriend's and my anniversary seem to fit each and every single point regarding verses, chorus...'s... and bridges! i watched this yesterday and am watching again because brent got under the sea stuck in my head
thanks man
I'm really loving all your breaks from 'With Lyrics'. Shows more of what your capable of.
@MysticGecko Great point! That makes it a chorus double prime!
Thanks for doing this Brent, youre so awesome.
Btw, I had to pause the video at chorus prime from laughing too hard. :D
i can tell you really love your fans
ur a good guy mr floss
Tanks again mister Floss. You are excellent.
New Lyrics 101? Sixteen minutes long? Reference to my favorite Disney movie? -And- singing and playing? Brent, I know you weren't intending it, but this is the best birthday present I've gotten this year! :)
Nice work Brental, I'm learning alot!
Gosh I love that song.
I love that you sang that song, it was my favorite movie, then aladdin came out.
your going to have that song stuck in my head for the rest of the night
i hope your happy
You see, this is the reason I put four of my classes on independent study.
If the classes were as awesome as this, then I wouldn't have gone into I.S.
I love you even more now that I know you're a Disney fan. :D
stickshifts and safetybelts totally jumpscared me when it started playing holy moly
I wish there was a video like this for every subject.
You have a great singing voice and these lessons are very helpful
Im glad Im not the only one who loves that song.
Thank you brentalhook, I mean, brentalfloss.
thanks i came back just for this ! :D
Oh my god, Floss, you have made my life, showing that clip from the Peter Pan stage play. I had that on VHS as a kid taped from TV, commercials and all. I watched it a million times. 14:58 "Stick Shifts and Safety Belts"
Awesome.
nice little shameless advertisement of your Mega Man 2 with Lyrics with the "But Why?" :)
loving the lessons, even if for just the knowledge expansion.
You need to record your own version of Under the Sea because that was AWESOME!
I'm a fan of the back ground music right near the end, Stick Shifts and Safety Belts? Haha. Good Call.
best...music class ever
Did you speed up the video or something when you sang under the sea? I was watching you play the keyboard, and the notes you were hitting weren't the same as what came out (example: you hit a C but I heard a B). Just something I noticed, great video btw! :D
I loved the Captain Hook and Chorus Prime segments. =)
Though I'm not much of a musician, I still find these really interesting. Wish you taught music at my school, I might not be such an uncultured idiot if I didn't have some crusty old guy yelling at me. Oh, and the Cake at the end was epic, more of that!
Would love to see a full version of you doing Under The Sea ^_^
As soon as I heard "BUT WHY?" I couldn't get Dr. Wily outta my head.
I don't plan on using this but I still enjoy watching these xDD
you are the awesomeness
b/c of this vid, I sang "under the sea" @ a Karaoke medical brigade fundraiser this evening. fun song to sing, esp da part sebastion sounds like he's rapping, 'di newt play di flute, di brass play di bass...etc."
@brana1646 Awww, thanks man. Or woman.
I'm not genuinely interested in writing lyrics myself (and logically shouldn't have any interest in this video), but Brent is just so damn good at making it interesting!
@letsplaynintendo1 That's black belt stuff. You guys are on your way to a white belt certification. Slowwww dowwwn.
@incredicassio Yes. It entails singing venomously catchy tunes in questionably pronounced English.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR EDWARD SCISSORHANDS POSTER. I LOVE IT.
This is full of win! I'm learning even outside of college. Lol
1:46 ABSOLUTE BEST BIT!

Too true LOL
These are very awesome lessons though

@beenjimotion Actually what you wrote there was a single stanza so the whole thing is actually just the A.
How many of us keep watching just to hear ol' Brentalfloss sing Under the Sea?
10:42 Every damn time... I can't help but laugh...
very appropriate that you use "Under the Sea" for your tutorial video, considering you're probably the next Alan Menken and we don't even know it yet.
Brentalfloss: Making the internet a more musical place.
This video got "Under the Sea" stuck in my head
@incredicassio yes Dancing Queen
Hey Brent. I heard that the Genesis song ABACAB was named after the order in which the sections are arranged. Do you know if this is true?
when you were explaining the format, i thought about "Under the Sea" , i feel like im getting it lol either that or i was retardedly lucky.
The Beatles are awesome.
DAMNIT IT, BRENTALBEARD, THANKS TO THIS VIDEO I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO DISNEY SONGS THE ENTIRE PAST WEEK.
Under da sea... under da sea... we got no troubles, life is de bubbles... under da sea... ;~;
(also don't you hate it when you press post and then see a major spelling or grammatical error? I do...)
@brentalfloss alright that makes sense. thanks
Is this aa or ab?
This is the song that never ends,
It just goes on and on, my friends.

@darkunov I understand that, I was addressing a different user who was saying otherwise.
Sebastian's C section was the same tune as Kermit's "Caribbean Amphibian"
...or somewhat similar, at least.
@showfool first A:" 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer! You take one down, pass it around, 98 bottles of beer on the wall"
Second A:"98 bottles of beer on the wall, 98 bottles of beer! You take one down, pass it around, 97 bottles of beer on the wall!".
etc. etc.
Educational and hysterical

awesome
I lol'd at "BUT WHY"
8:23 pure happiness
I also have that tie that's hanging in the back :D
If the chorus is the same length but is in a different key, is it a chorus prime or just a normal chorus?
Btw I love that song too haha
see you at pax east, you gonna be around pax east hotel on thursday? we should grab a drink or something
Kids don't drink beer! :D - great :D
A good example for modern voice / chorus song is f**k you by cee lo green
Great Video Brentalfloss - really enjoying every one you do =)
8:09 What is that chord on the "away"? I know you like to learn things by ear so you probably dont have any sheet music. Thanks

the floss singing under the sea. today is complete.
Hey Brentalfloss, where did you get that Zelda shirt?
@incredicassio There is, but you couldn't escape it if you wanted to...
Hey Roger! Whaddya call the middle of a song?
@joannerryan that was a ridiculously vague comment because i didn't mention that i was in an Alan Menkin daydream and thinking about "Little Shop of Horrors."
