- It took 15 months for me to get back on the "Lyrics 101" horse, but I'm back, baby!
By the way... once you see my antlers... you can't unsee them.
Hey by the way, if you don't have my new CD yet, you can get it digitally or physical by clicking here: brentalfloss.com/bitsofmeinfo
Every time I think of changing the meaning of a sentence by accenting a word I think of "I never said she stole my money." 7 words, 7 different meanings depending on which word is emphasized. :) Love this series - it's such a great way to teach people!
So glad you decided to continue this series. Very intuitive thoughts in the beginning of the video, and it's the exact reason why I stopped studying music at university. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on songwriting, you're the only person I've encountered that has been able to explain things clearly to me. My struggles with songwriting disappeared almost instantly at the start of the series. Thanks again.
My lyrics really started tightening up once I had a better understanding of prosody. I think it's one of the most important things for lyricists and songwriters to get a handle on. Thanks for getting back into the Lyrics 101 saddle, especially with something as big as this. Looking forward to part five sometime before we die!
I missed this series, Brent. Glad it's coming back, and thanks for the lesson~!
Another note about the West Side Story part is that the chord resolves when it gets to "place," so even because "a" is stressed, the way the music is built leads the phrase to "place" and not "a."
Also, Brent, your "With Lyrics" videos are inspiring me to make something of the same vein for Bob-Omb Battlefield or a Super Mario Land 2 theme as a response to your collaboration with Dave. This video reinforced some ideas about music-first lyrics that I need to keep in mind, so thanks for the tips!
I didn't expect this at all :D
I'm glad you brought Lyrics 101 back :)
Thank you very much for this. I've been doing Touhou with Lyrics in my spare time so it helps quite a lot.
Really glad you did this. At first listen your lyrics sound, to most people, simple. "Oh hey, *I* can do this, it's not hard!" but really, it's not that easy. There's a lot of thought that really goes into something like this. It's great you can take time out and to explain to people who want to do this that it's not so easy as throwing alphabet soup on paper and rearranging the letters. You're quite the genius. Thanks for appreciating your fans so much :D
I love this series. My sister and I write musical parodies for fun and it's nice to understand the actual technique behind this.
Nice to see that you still have this going on Brent, don't forget about some of your other stuff like the Q&A's!
The physical copy of Bits of Me arrived today. Thanks for making such an awesome album dude :D
It is our job as fans to make sure those 4 lines win an award!
Congratulations on almost 300 videos!
Oh wow! Thank you so much for this! I loved it so much! Keep going!
"I don't really wish to SHOP for shoes."
"Just bring me a new pair, slave."
Thanks for starting this up again Brent! :D
I feel good watching this so soon after it was released
Agreed, that was so much fun! Looking forward to seeing it, too. :)
The joke at 9:15 made me laugh simply because of the way he said it.
Good video, Brentalfloss. Looking forward to the next one.
Yay! I've missed Lyrics 101! hope the next one is not too far in the future!
Non-gaming music nerd with too many SUPER-GAMER! chums to count here. I'm SO glad you got back to Lyrics 101. It's definitely the segment on your channel that I relate to the most, which is a testament to its approachability. You're a great instructor, very entertaining, and I actually think your approach is very open and flexible as far as style is concerned. You shouldn't be so worried about it, since you made sure to address that breaking the rules is okay once you mastered the basics.
He's very inspiret for me. I love his personality! (I am from Germany)
Hello, I'm the guy who sent Brentalfloss those lyrics at 3:38 and I'm honerd he used them in his video's to help others. I have -after quite a bit of learning and writing- updated the song and put a small demo on my youtube, don't get excited, its still far from being compleated, but to all those out there writing lyrics, don't give up and keep at it =D
Amazingly helpful music writing tips AND Cave Story music, very awesome
As one of the fan collaborators from the Too Many Games panel, I'd just like to say that that afternoon was the greatest. I can't wait to see the result of our lyrical masterpiece.
When we wrote the Gusty Garden song with you at TMG, it was cool to see how the music-first lyric writing worked. I am an *incredibly amateur* author so it was really fun to see a different way of writing and the restrictions that come with it.
brilliant lecture Brent. well done. I don't write lyrics my self, but I still learned a lot from your video.
The only issue I have with thought fragments, and this goes along with your "Different people, different styles" idea, is thought fragments, if used well, can make the listener crave what's coming next. Their brain is telling them the thought is not yet complete and makes the listener want to listen further in order to complete the thought. This can be overdone and seem tacky if done poorly, but in my experiences, it is an interesting way to tug at the listener's ear. Love the videos, Brent.
HUGE FAN LOVE IT!!!
Can someone give this man an Award for just being Awesome?
In the Xbox world, He unlocks a lot of achievements within 10 seconds repeatedly.
How does he do it? The world may never know, no matter how many times he tries to explain it.
MAN that Light up the night t-shirt is AMAZING!
WANT!
Thank you! This was very helpful and you even broke it down for a moran like me to understand!
I lost it when you said "look at my hat" in Flight of the Valkyrie. XD
So it seems brentalfloss finally made Sonic with lyrics :D
Woo! It's back!
Love west side story, another beautiful work by Stephen Sondheim
I love your shirt!
I do love your music; you have a great ear and taste. The prose point is interesting because, as Alex Ross wrote, "lyrics make less sense to the eye than to the ear."
Great apreciacion all the way from Japan ^^
I knew there was dos and don'ts, but now I see SCIENCE! in "...with lyrics"!
I remember when I was writing my music-first lyric to the Eternal Eyes theme. I wrote that as I was writing the e-mail to Brent.
A man rushed into the doctor's office and shouted, "Doctor! I think I'm shrinking!"
The doctor calmly responded, "Now, settle down. You'll just have to be a little patient." HA!
Have I said you are a great artist yet?
Damnit, that joke made me laugh.
Huzzah! A video!
Nice antlers, Brental Floss.
and with this i have watched all your videos.......NOW i can subscribe XD
I actually learned something, okay thats enough of that for one day.
seriously though, great video XD
It's a game with awesome story music and graphics 10/10 :D
This is a good music for dummies series. And I'm the dummy. So much new and interesting stuff!
An Ad played in the middle of the video, and I freaked out. I was all like NOOOOOO!
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU MAN!
Regarding West Side Story: in "Somewhere" the "a" in the first line is the highest note, but I've always considered the note for "place" as the part of the phrase you'd emphasize. Lots of people treat "a" as the goal since it's a full minor 7th above "there's" and requires more breath support just to make that jump and keep the phrase somewhat emotionally-charged and legato, though. If you alter the words, the line matches up surprisingly well with "I like Tupperware."
The Megas' Beneath the Steel is a pretty dark melody first song considering how cheery the Bomb Man chiptune is.
Good work soldier
I could get annoyed at you for not understanding the joke, but your name is just to awesome.
The Sonic song was the best thing ever written.
My thoughts are they should be saved for opera.
o__o This is genious. Genious!
Lost it for a good minute at "WELCOME TO A-TOWN!"
this video was extremely helpful, I thank you for this! I assume I shall be trying to make lyrics in English with this video but let's see if it also works with my native language. :) You rule! Cheers!
Thanks I learned stuff!
Hooray! :D
i have no interest in writing lyrics at all, yet for some reason I really like these videos
At last a new video~
man when you were doing the doctor joke, the music sounded like woodys roundup, majour nostalgia trip
regarding a few things. in certain occasions THE can be the focus point, even tho it by normal rules cannot, this is because it's forming a word, as in instead of a single undefined something THE defines EXACTLY what you're talking about.
and then just a little thing about the last bit, you could change it to "a hero's past" as mario is technically considered a hero, while also a plumber a plumber hero if you will. remembering the lesson on synonyms.
the first lyrics for super mario world 2 athletic theme could have been: Baby baby baby, come jump up on my back. We're going for a ride, I'm sure you can see that!
Please don't. I can either deal with thousands of people saying "take time out of your schedule to look at my work" or thousands of people saying "spend time on your own work so you can release more content!"
I pick the latter.
This is awesome. Glad you didn't give us an assignment this time, in a way. Not we can do whatever the heck we want, yay! :D
I think it would be interesting to know about unorthodox lyrics, and the way they work with unorthodox tunes. A great example is lateralus by tool, where the chorus does kind of a forward back Fibonacci sequence.
I thought the same thing when I heard it in the background. This should be a thing.
lol I was watching this in complete silence with my headphones on but 'welcome to A town' made me lose my shit
I think during the weekend I'll get a notebook and start writing some of this down. My semi-goal is to write a whole album one day, so this might prove useful. (It's a semi-goal because it's not the one thing I want to do, it's more of a thing to do with my spare time.) I am also in the middle of making something called 'Sonic 3: The Musical', so I'm going to need a lot of inspiration! :D
Now i want yoshi with lyrics
Fantastic shirt, Brent. I have the design on a lighter.
Hey Brentalfloss, I actually have a quick question.
I've recently found myself needing (long story) to compose music for the first time. I've performed it and all, but composing it is new to me. Anyways, if I have two variations to a character theme (vocal and non vocal, respectively) should I start with the core theme and backstitch, or work on it all at once?
Just curious for your input, since I respect your work. If you're too busy to answer, oh well. But it'd be awesome if you do see this!
As a general rule I agree, but occasionally it can be fun to play with the rule and intentionally avoid a rhyme. Humor is often built on reversal of expectations so leading an audience toward predicting a rhyme allows you to subvert that expectation for comedic value. Of course, it has to be used deliberately and sparingly.
hope you this
your webcomics are still pretty cool
i wanna see that movie about a plumbers past...
lol that yoshi song was good! :D
vary vary true
Scratch that 'It's about a plumber's paaaaast'
Unusual stress on a monosyllabic word makes you think, "That's an odd part of the idea to emphasize." Unusual stress on a polysyllabic word makes you think, "People who know how to speak English do not talk that way."
radical broski
The Cave Story theme is as background music :)
Finish this lyric to Kid Icarus Stage 1 Theme:
Hurtling through the air
Wearing a toga
Shooting my little bow
I'm gonna pwn ya
I'm on a mission to
Battle Medusa
My name is Pit (la la)
(Lalala laa LAA)
i dont think im smrt to do something like this. but i usually sing with the theme of the songs as its going along. like the other day was singing along with the overworld theme from FFVI.
p.s i know i spell smart wrong
Did anyone else laugh when he said lyrics end in butthole just like our digestive system
I JUST GOT RICKROLLED BY AN AD. "Some things are best left in the 80's. (INSERT RICKROLL HERE) SONUVABITCH
You forgot something:
"I don't wish to shop FOR shoes" --I would rather shop WITH them because I have no friends.
I really don't wish to shop for SHOES.
(I'm really shopping for condoms) :P
awesome video man. I'm learning a lot here!
You should have NintendoCapriSun on an episode of this!
I want that shirt. So bad.
After commenting that, He started talking about shopping for shoes in a weird manor and I lost what he was talking about again. SO I just roll with it and keep thinking " ..He's so random.. " ..(I have A.D.D I think.. I'm not sure.
I will never say "banana" the same way again.
Cave Story
The music at the beginning... Cave Story *___*
hes playing Cave Story in the background XD , its main title theme :D
You mentioned in part one that you were going to touch on radio and hip hop. Is this still to come?
