    As many of you know I’ve recently started Patreon, a subscription-based service that helps out the channel and in return gets you early, commercial-free access to weekly episodes, behind the scenes and full access to the #IronDuke Kenworth cabover build: / twinstickgarage
    Special thanks to the almost 700 folks who have signed up so far!
    As I’ve mentioned, I do plan provide the occasional Iron Duke update episode on CZcams for everyone to enjoy and this is one of those weeks …
    This Saturday was spent reinstalling the rebuilt differentials for the Iron Duke that the Gear Center recently put together. Once I got started, I also realized this was a great opportunity to try out the new Tiger Tool pullers to tackle the old crusty slack adjusters and let me tell you, that is my new favorite tool in the box. The diffs went in without issue and now I need to get a custom driveshaft built by Pat’s Driveline … onward and upward!
    Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
    Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
    Subscribe for notifications for future episodes that I do my best to upload new videos weekly on Thursdays.

    My late father had a '70 White Freightliner COE that I traveled across the country many times with him and sometimes entire family. We later on restored it after it sat for yrs when he started his own trucking company when was in high school. Unfortunately both my father and that truck are long gone now but miss them both.

    I remember when I lost my short shaft in the US and the first place I stopped at looking for repairs told me they had to order it in. I asked where they would be ordering it from and they said "The Gear Center in Edmonton, Canada". I just locked up the front diff and drove back home to Edmonton. Once home I stopped in at The Gear Centre and got myself a new shaft and installed it.

    The Duke is about the length of one of our rigid units, which I used to work on a bunch back in the day. So I can confirm, your idea for the driveshaft, with the slip shaft at the rear and a straight up front, is the way to go. Just put a little drop in there to make the angle a little easier. That gear centre was awesome to watch, they do some very good work! Good to see the Duke coming along.

      The front axle wont pull untill its lock in. Power goes straight through it till its locked. Pull the driveshaft out between the rearends. You wont move at all untill you lock the power divider.

    • @1one3_Racing
      @1one3_Racing Před 6 měsíci

      That actually depends on the make of power divider.
      Some euro trucks drive front axle. Australian trucks drive both axles all the time in an open diff style. The right on the front axle and left in the rear will always wear tyres faster and you need to rotate tyres at 50 000km. Most Aussie trucks also have quad locks.
      Jump in an Iveco Stralis though and the back axle will roll off a gutter but the middle axle will hang up.

    Hi Mark, I love your channel. I found your channel way back in in 2020....? I found you when i started my "Covid-19" project.. a 1977 Ford C8000 cab over single axle tractor.
    I want to clarify your interpretation of how inter-axle tandem drives work. With inter-axle differential active the power is fed equally to both axles front and rear simultaneously. if slippage is encountered at the front axle left or right wheels, the rear axle stops pulling. If the slippage happens at the rear axle left or right wheels, the front axle stops pulling. this is how tandem drives operate normally. when inter-axle differential is engaged, it locks the centre differential and only allows slippage between wheel set to wheel set (either front axle or rear axle). What I'm trying to point out here is the inter-axle lock doesn't engage one axle or the other specifically, it stops slippage between the front and rear axles and still allows left to right slippage of wheel sets. tough to explain in words...

    This is how power divider works. Power came in the drive shaft, thru a set of spider gears which split the power equally to the front pinion gear and output shaft to the rear end. If you think the rear is the only one powered, remove one of the front axles to see if truck moves. If you think the front is only one powered, remove one of the rears. If I need to explain how a tri-drive works. I will be glad to.

    Power divider is a differential between the 2 rears. It allows them to move independently. As long as all 4 corners are making traction, both rears drive the truck. If a wheel slips on either rear end, the power divider locks the them together. If you get 2 wheels slipping, you're out of luck.

    • @davidcatlette9697
      @davidcatlette9697 Před 6 měsíci

      Then why would a truck get stuck with power divider locked in ? Kicks the rock out from under the wheels and doesn’t move 2 inches ? Every thing locked in ! Nothing broken !

    • @dennissmith460
      @dennissmith460 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@davidcatlette9697
      Because it doesn't lock the front and rear diffs from side to side. The powerdivider is an interaxle lock, not an axle lock. All twin screw trucks have a power divider. Not all twin screw trucks have lockers.

    Just a quick tip for cleaning out those diffs, if you spray everything out and want to use a pressure washer for getting the hard stuff out but dont want water in there, dry it out with a towel and use methanol to get rid of all the little drops of water. Works like a charm, we used it in my engineering chem labs to clean test tubes out.

    Love your content Mark, good stuff! Been a mechanic for a long time and am building an A model also. Built a few trucks over the years. I don’t want to dwell on a mistake but the rear axle always has power. Usually the right rear, tires wear faster on that corner most of the time. Locking the power divider gives you power to the for the axle. I also want to possibly give you and idea so you can keep that exhaust as tall as possible, because after all it’s one of a kind and possibly the focal point of this custom, eye catching build. Maybe look into air ride front spring kit so you can lower it as much as possible and still get in and out of the shop. Love seeing your weekly vids!

    I couldn't tell because of the time lapse, but a good idea when installing pinion yokes is to add a dab of silicone on the splines inside the yoke, as well as on the washer and nut face. That helps to prevent potential weeping of oil up the splines and around the nut. I'm sure you knew all that already.

    Marc, you mentioned the power divider axel does the work when not on? I think it is the other way around. Rear axel is live all the time and the front rear only live when power divider is on. At least with all my trucks that is the case. I had my diffs all rebuilt too but I had them put in Detroit no spin lockers on front and rear and they are the bomb. No problem turning corners on dry pavement either. Never getting stuck on gravel or mud now with just running bob tail. All eight tires now spin together when power divider is on. Dallas

    I was a little concerned when I saw all the sparks from cut off wheels & bolt heads flying ,,hope you cleaned up after all the bits of carborundum & metal .
    Still , another cool vid ,really enjoying this job .Can't wait to see how it turns out .
    Respect...!

    The right tools sure help make it easier 🔧🔧🙌🏼👊🏼👍🏻 and your garage is starting to look like mine 😂😂😂 you remember there is a huge empty trailer sitting right outside the garage 😂😂 some of your stuff you ain’t going to touch right away can go in the trailer to get out of your way 👍🏻👊🏼🙌🏼 ask me how I ended up with 6 semi trailers for storage 😂😂😂😂

    • @TwinStix
      @TwinStix  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thought about it but then decided I didn’t want to store a bunch of stuff in there as it would all roll around when I start driving it again in again the spring 🤔

    I guess I'm one of the purists. I can say from experience your not gonna wreck the threads but you can make your day longer by breaking a tap in the hole by using a drill instead of doing it by hand. If it catches a bit when your doing it by hand you can feel that and stop with the drill youll only notice when the tap breaks.

    Awesome channel, my girlfriend Jackie and I always look forward to watching it every time you post ,we're here in Winnipeg, I have a 1934 International 2 ton I'm trying to resurrect, I have a question about that Vevor buffer polisher is that the model W 1200 I want to try it on my fenders before I attempt to fix all the damage from so many years of hauling grain out on my uncle's farm

    Just for fun, you need to bolt down a brake chamber and use put all your really long extensions together and undo the bolt.
    I used to do it as a party trick. Some as setting off airbags. It's actually kind of disappointing.

    Hey twin stix! Is that ashtray on your k100 dash, passenger side, the same as in your 359? Just curious, cause my 352 needs the passenger ash tray, and I know it’s the same as the 359. But it’d be nice to know what else to look into for parts.

    Greetings from New Brunswick ! Big fan of the channel, been following since the beginning. What about doing a solid mount deal for the 5th wheel on the Duke ? Super clean look vs them friggen ugly slider plates.

    • @TwinStix

      That's an interesting idea but I think I may keep the slider as I'll need to roll it all the way back to pull my camper then push fwd if I pulled the Snowman trailer

    Mark look at your other trucks.the back rearend should have the pinion on the bottom not the top. I did the same on my kenworth not paying attention.you will see a little slope on the case that’s the oil drain back passage.
