I think I figured out why I don't like the Mercedes frowny grille. It feels like they're overcompensating. Mercedes cars never used to look angry, yet they were still intimidating and imposing.
Right on money. Many older cars used to induce positive feelings. Handsome, beautiful, charming, adorable, elegant, enthusiastic or bubbly. Maybe with a sprinkle of intimidation, as you just said.
Contrast to many newer cars which are trying to look like an angry spawn of devil, as if they're saying "I will eat you alive" like a rabid dog.
Maybe the first gen Aventador is a good example of this. You look at it and you know it's a monster inside, but it's a monster in it's resting stance. It knows it's powerful but it doesn't outright show its teeth.
@@TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure the F Type Jaguar is another example. It used to be one of the happiest, prettiest sports cars on the market, then somebody stripped away that pure innocence, now it's angrier than the Audis.
@@yt_Ajay_are you implying that Audis are intimidating?
@@yt_Ajay_ true, it had this strong but playful big cat feel to it. Then they changed its eyes and it lost all its identity. But the most baffling design change to me is probably the Vantage.
@@gaara4667 angry =/= intimidating. Audis all have boring "aggressive" expressions. The TT had such a cheeky face before they made it yet another angry Audi and took away all of its charm.
You are absolutely right, the Bruno Sarko designed Mercedes SL is the best of all time. I am glad l'm not the only one that thinks so. That car looks so majestic.
As for staggering the wheel sizes, making the rear wheels bigger seems to be a drag race tradition. It also shows that power is coming from the rear wheels.
Indeed, this new SL has a rear end that is shaped like a Porsche. However, Mercedes & Porsche are actually connected to each other, and have historically worked on projects together.
I think the fifth generation is the best looking SL besides first generation SL of course. I think it’s very underrated. It’s one of the best design cars of the 2000’s and of all time to me
This is the best Sl since R129@@iosgaming2824
Probably my favorite generation of the SL is the R230, specifically the 2009 facelift. Not to mention, the R230 generation had the SL65 AMG Black Series which is hands down one of my favorite cars ever and probably my favorite Mercedes Benz period. But I have no idea why Mercedes insists on putting the charge port door on the rear of the car completely ruining the overall design.
I have to agree with you on this one, the most sold SL model ever, but this R232 is also beautiful too, but not as elegant as the R230
The side profile really highlights the biggest problem of this car which is that the rear end is too curvy. The bubble butt aspect works for the Porsche 911 because the front end is pointed but with the straighter silhouette of the SL I just wish the back end reflected that boxy design choice shown in The front end as well when viewed from the side profile.
They are actually built on same chassis!
That explanation also works with a lot of "coupé" SUVs
Where do you see boxy design?
@@mikeiceeSL and 911 on the same chassis?
@@vladislavdimitrov4646 look at the front end in the side profile and see how straight it is in the grill area compared to the curved backend
The center display is not angled towards the driver. That’s only the case in the GLC, C Class and CLE.
just went to measure on mine and can confirm there's no angle
@@senagangbe5804 yep. Only C, GLC, CLE have that strange 6 degree angle... All the other screens are centered
I owned that old SL500; I miss it. You're right, I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something special about that era of Mercedes in general.
maybe the nomenclature needs to be modified SL superlight vs GT grand touring - these are no longer SL
The mercedes SL is gorgeous
On the Sl and amg gt the screen isn’t angled, only c class, cle and glc!
I like when climate controls have physical dials and buttons however, I love the newer technology that allows small screens to be integrated into the dials to allow multiple functions and reducing the overall number of buttons
Look at a viper (the snake).. It's all curves but the eyes are not. I think this is exactly how the SL looks like! Awesome design!
200k seems to be quite expensive imo , looks good tho
200k, but it depreciates to 150k instantly after 500 miles of driving
Like the hybrid system is nothing revolutionary and has been around for awhile.
I miss the old days when AMGs had the V12, my cousin owned the R230 SL65 and it was just pure beauty mechanically and luxury
It’s a Mercedes. Of course it’s expensive.
"The best or nothing“
6:32 The design of the SL started from scratch with a white sheet of paper.
Yet the frontal overhang became really long ( almost 1 Meter ) which I don't understand.
I went to the Mercedes dealership and checked out several SL yesterday.
If the nose was 10 cm shorter the car would have looked much better proportion wise and the bonet could have been still long enough.
Most other mercedes cars dont look good without the roof imo, but this SL is amazing.
Nice video! Please review the Lucid Gravity!
mercedes aiming again to be something it isn't part 4
What do you mean?
@@vladislavdimitrov4646 mercedes trying to be Porsche part 4, this and the amg gt aiming aesthetically to look like a 911, for quite some time porsche has being testing the turbo s in a hybrid version in nurburgring, now this comes out, to me when i think about the sl and the amg gt i view them as the sub succesors of the slr ( the definitive gt supercar of it's time) to now this, this thing that tries to be something that it just isn't ( 911) the downgrade in a design level and in a performance level is BIG, and again this is soo disrespectfull to what and old sl and slr were ( in a performance level and in a design level) (similar to the actual z06 c8 vette having a "ferrari engine" ) this kind of things make me wonder how much legacy does this surnames have and how much the brands care about them.(not much from what i'm witnessing.)
@@coach4050 Fair point
@@vladislavdimitrov4646 Thanks for respecting my opinion in other places, they get angry for hearing this truths and facts or combative.
@@coach4050looks like a 911 is the dumbest thing ever. Have you seen his GT3 comparison? Nor the front or back do look like a 911. Plus the amg is front engined.
And no nobody gets angry😅 there are simply good arguments and a bit worse arguments and I do absolutely not agree that it looks like a 911. The 911 is way too unique
Could you do a render of the current gen SL to look like an SL65 Black?
I’m not a Benz guy but I do love the new SL
The sloped back is a throwback to the original 300SL, which I like. Squaring off the back wouldn’t work without redesigning the entire car, which I’m against because it’s already gorgeous. The interior screens on the other hand…
You should make a video about the new skoda superb they are even advertising that they still have three dials in the interior
SL and S CLASS and GT don't havde that 6 ° angle
So many models from Mercedes...this and AMG GT are they like the same thing? Is AMG GT the highest tier of SL? Goes like 63SL < AMG GT? I'm so confused I only recognize gullwing is the SLS the rest of the lineup looks too similar to me.
SL screen is centered and symmetrical, unlike the C class
Oh, speaking of "engine in the wrong place"... can you do a "KITT but mid-engined" restyling video?
looks great but doesn't look like a SL
The charge port location is a show-stopper for me. It destroys the lines of the rear bumper.
At $200k'ish, I would pick a 911 Turbo S, an Aston DB12 or a Bentley Conti GT over this any day of the week. It just doesnt feel $200k level of special to me.
yes it looks very cheap, and the interior looks cheap other than the seats and decent door panels.
@@mikeiceethat's just bullshit. The interior is great
A Turbo S starts at like 40 Grand more and doesn't have a V8. Brand new with options the Turbo can do way more, the conti is only the same price as a V8 and nobody wants the V8
If you ever owned a real Mercedes aka made by Daimler Benz not Daimler you'd know real quality. This SL is very close to Kia quality interior @@v12-s65
Which Bentley or DB12 is $200,000???? My GTC convertible is $387k after taxes Mulliner and fully loaded. DB12 will reach $375k +. Turbo S will be $250+ with options and heritage interior. This for $200k is not bad
They should have called the 800 HP hybrids 73.
Mercedes is making the most beautiful cars right now.
I personally still like the previous gen amg gt/s/c/r generations styling over the new gen
An OCD failure. For no reason should the charge port be such located. A clear compromise.
Supercar? As far as I can tell, the engine is still in the wrong place (the front). I'm still waiting for them to finally bring out that C111.
Does an 800 hp hybrid powertrain actually perform like an 800 hp internal combustion powertrain?
You would think it would perform even better because a 800hp ICE couldnt reliably bring the power down
whats the color name of the car at 7 minute?
I hope your elbow recovers
its so gorgeous
im pretty sure that the SL and the Amg GT dont have the 6 degree curved screen 🪝
whats crazy is this is now one of the most powerfull hybrids in world. Rivaling some ferraris
It’s a great roma competitor tbh especially when it comes to looks because although I don’t think the roma is hideous I do find it not a nice looking car for the most part
The center to the steering wheel is made from cheap plastic... don't like it
the SL has literally , always been a supercar, since its inception.
I was curious, if it isnt a supercar, what is it perceived as?😂
@@Aiantaschr people perceive have perceived it as a simple gt since the late 70's. despite the fact it has offered world class handling since inception.
@@Aiantaschr I'll list some of the supercar requirements. Must be exclusive/expensive(every single SL sold new qualifies), must be fun to drive at speed(this is the biggest requirement) , must look good from a plethora of angles, must have a either a race going or race derived powertrain(w198 , r129, r231, and r232 qualify for this ), must be innovative in its bodytype( w198 brought gullwing doors to market with a spaceframe, r129 helped save the roadster class with the introduction of its hydroelectric roll bar and top) , must be fast for it's day (not necessarily the fastest car in the world, although the w198 actually was).
They dont bring out full power to safe some space for the amg gt
The SL is dead. And I’m devastated
Good specs but ugly. Looks too sharky to please the Chinese markets. I miss the older look up till 2015 or 2016ish. Just for reference I really like the first CLS, NOT the current shark look alike one
To be honest I love the design but does anyone feel that this isn’t “Mercedes”? I know it’s a weird comment but I miss the leather, wood, and all the little attentions to detail before screens started replacing everything.
Maserati GT
Why is it all of the recent mercedes designs have such rounded, droopy rear ends? They look like theyre wearing saggy diapers. It's not as bad on this one as some others, but c'mon Mercedes, a little more structure in the back and a little less agression in the front and boom, problems solved
Wait 5 years and you will pick these up for $20k 😂😂🤣🤣
With their ICE production coming to an end, it being the fastest SL ever, and getting a manufaktur treatment as standard I don’t see how it could depreciate much within 5 years but just in general
it's gonna take forever til they get rid of that frowning face
Looks cheap, like a Korean car. And Korean cars these days look Germanic. World is upside down.
