Starting to tear into this beautiful American classic,, Same common outboard problem, Lack of care, but clean for my area, American made outboard, Good stuff, from Mercury outboards ...!
Thanks for the video Kodi. I have an 89 Classic 50 w Electric start and controls. I was about to give up on it...this is the second year I have had to do some extensive work on it. I am no genius as a boat mechanic and videos like this help a lot.
@@kodibassInsideoutboards My uncle bought one in mid 70's, I am not a big MERC fan but that engine has over 4000 hours easy on it! It starts an runs like new.....
@@davidbrennan5just have to keep an eye on the lower crank case seal. Once the let go, they suck too much air in and lean out the bottom cylinder…ask me how I know :/
I finally have my 85 running but not without a minor issue. What is that 1/4 in diameter hole next to spark plug number1 and why is there water coming out of mine?
Mine fried the wires on the alternator right where they come out of the potting and one trigger wire burnt off. But the starter tooth shows no wear and the paint on the head is like brand new. So very little hours. Someone told me these are prone to cooking stators. Dont know why. They say the Sierra unencapsulated stators are better
Im wondering how hard it would be to keep this relatively powerful motor on a straight course in WOT with the tiller. I once had a 40 horse Evinrude with tiller on a 16 foot Lund "tin can boat", and I could just barely hold it on a straight course at WOT, and not for very long. And although I did try to adjust the small rudder on the cavitation plate, I could never overcome the pull to starboard, so my arm was sure sore at 61 years old trying to keep a straight course with the tiller handle!
Hey there nice vid haha I love the comedy. Reminds me of my Dad. Maybe you could help me with some info. I’ve got an 89 Classic Fifty with controls. Wanting to convert to tiller. Any suggestions?
+CH' The only way 2 do it cost effectively is a donor motor set up already 4 tiller, They are out there I just picked one up 4 $50.00, Power head is shot but everthing 4 tiller is there. kodi
Is the 45hp classic 50 basically the same besides the horsepower? I have a miss at full throttle and I checked the stator. I'm reading 2.20 ohms the book tells me 5.7- 8.0 scale reading, other coloum says r x 1000 which I'm guessing means 5700 - 8000 ohms ( kind of confussing) but I'm thinking high side of stator is bad. Spark and fuel has been checked..all good. Any advice appreciated. Great video. Great job on the motor. New sub.
+Kyle Woodward, I will look @ my manual & see if I can figure it out, As for are they the same they were up until I think 1984 ish, Then some changes were made as I have been told. kodi
Wish I had you here Kodi, I got a Mercury Laser 220 XRI from about 1987-1988. It is in nice condition but it feels like it drops a cylinder and only revs about 4900rpms and it should max out at about 5900-6200. Any idea?
+Tobbe P, First just start with a good tune up on the motor, look for corrosion at wire connections, check your fuel hoses for leaks cracks, etc. Spend a day with your motor, Just going over the basic's clean as you go. Next check your spark with a spark checker, & do a compression test . these steps will most likely point you to the issue with your awsumm motor. kodi
HERE IS A 50 CLASSIC I SAW ON U TUBE YOU WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO FIND A 4 STROKE 50 THAT WOULD EVER COME CLOSE TO RUNNING LIKE THIS. Mercury classic fifty
@kodibass I just bought this some engine from a friend of myn and he replaced the stator himself. The boat will run one time then not the next. The boat mechanic looked at it and said everything looks good when I went to run it it would run in the driveway but not the lake. The mechanic said if it’s doing that the stator must be going bad but my buddy doubts it’s the stator because he just replaced it. Do you have any ideas why it won’t start
+TW when it wont start do a spark check on all 4 cylinders if you have spark on any cylinder it is not a bad stator, If you have loss of spark on all cylinders it most likely is a bad stator, un-hook the stop switch to eliminate that as the problem first. kodi
Hi. I have a 1985 Classic 50 Merc. The power trim system was working and then stopped raising and lowering after I got a build up of water and the pump was a little submerged. The trim motor up and down controls power ok. It was working before it stopped. The issue is the hydraulics. Two of my lines had water in them so I disconnected all lines at either end and blew them out with compressed air and reconnected. Not sure if there is water in the one cylinder now and concerned with winter coming on it might damage it? I did the same procedure as you filling the reservoir. Around where the hydraulic lines connect to the reservoir, oil leaked out of a small hole that Mercury tells me is a valve to release oil. Not to be confused with the turn knob used for reverse lock (not sure if this either closed or open would cause the leak?). I'd like to know the requirements to stop the leak. The other thing I would like to know is the bleeding procedure. You started with the motor fully up and filled your trim reservoir with oil and then you mentioned bleeding the system. Would love to know how to get this all working again. Here is an ad I placed on Facebook that provides a visual and further explanation: facebook.com/marketplace/item/518228890135547

a leak-down test should be performed every 100 hours, sometimes those seals last 25 years and sometimes they only last 5 years or so. @@officialWWM
