Being torn apart by the therapist for the nervous jokes you make out of discomfort is a mood
TheAlbinoskunk It’s mainly with ‘gallows humour’ where we think it’s inappropriate to laugh along...
oh my god YES
Not the security blanket being torn to shreds! 😭
I’ve never been to therapy (can’t afford it yet 😭), is this really how it is ?
@@karengrace6890 thank you. 💙
Therapist: Catholic?
Fleabag: Yes.
Therapist: Looks good in the???
Fleabag: Yes.
Therapist: I understand.
easy get him to convert to C of E
@@robertjackson3552 he's Irish. Would never convert to C of E.
@@DarrenBates so the irish people are catholic? sorry Im from the other extreme of the globe

Looks good in the what?
Fiona Shaw got an Emmy nomination for this scene alone. Lol
Mubarak AlSadhan her power!!!!
and now it's an emmy win xd
@@davidgalan2140 No, she lost to Jane Lynch
But it's the category tho. It's not like she was nominated for supporting.
The scene is brutal 😂
The therapist's "I understand" is just gold
It's actually a very common phrase for therapists to use to show they're listening nonjudgmentally
@@ryanzhanfeng9322but in this particular situation it is hilarious
@@ryanzhanfeng9322 It's the fact that she's just asked if he's good looking that gets me
yah. The therapist has also wanted to f a priest at some point. Saying "I understand" is like the professional way of communicating "oh yeah I get it, I knew this priest who was so hot." It's that sort of subtle brilliant humor that hints at the depth of the character without saying it out loud. Part of the strength of this show's writing; there's no one-dimensional bit characters that just exist to develop the main characters. Even if you don't get much time with a character, they drop hints to deep and complex personalities and quirks.
The point being that everyone is a person, not just Fleabag. She talks to the camera and thinks she's so different and the main character of the world. She relishes feeling special and superior in some ways (brains, looks, cleverness) and inferior in others (morals, honesty, etc). And yes she's exceptional but not *so* exceptional in every way. And that belief is a big part of what isolates her and ultimately makes her depressed and basically only able to (barely) related to her sister, the person most alike her in terms of lived experience.
So the therapist who seemed so polar opposite to Fleabag, tells us with a single "I understand", that she's also got a complex emotional/sexual/horny side to her. It's done in a very blase and matter-of-fact way, as if to say "of course I'm a sexual being, did you think your sexual urges were so unique and abnormal?" It's super funny but also damn good therapy.
Her little wink at the camera at 3:04 implying that she's only got us to talk to kind of broke my heart.
Reminds you a bit of youtubers.....
We're always there.
For...her friends?
she needs to write a black mirror episode

They should make a mini series with this therapist. Great acting
this therapist already has a series...it's called Killing Eve.

Fiona Shaw is a treasure
@@aspic5881 Emmy and Tony Award-nominee Fiona Shaw...
maybe somebody is. It's my housemate.
The true brilliance of this scene is that this therapist is extremely talented. Unexpected.
How do you know that pray tell?
No she isn't.
@@samo917 In five minutes she pushed past Fleabag’s defenses and got to the heart of her issue. Hugely perceptive to zoom in on the decision to stop having sex and the person not hanging sex with.
It's like a half dozen sessions compressed into 5 minutes.
If anything flea bag revealing so much about her self in first session is what made the therapist able to to her job so great
At 4:09 when Phoebe Waller-Bridge says "so what's the point in you?", the way Fiona Shaw's expression drops slightly in response to that - like it's a put-down when really it's an earnest question - and she repeats "You know what you're going to do" - but this time like she's slightly given up caring what she does - is such a perfect little moment of acting.
Leo Watkins wow, you’re right... it’s the subtlety of it too.
Yeah I think the therapist’s reaction sort of makes her agree that there’s no point in therapy
I don't think she ever cared
Which is a shame because up to that point, the therapist was really, really good. The bout of pride in her work makes her not only look a bit petty but also oblivious to how people who are in bad spots often have the tendency to take others down with them.
@@DrZaius3141" people who are in bad spots often have the tendency to take others down with them."
It's called THe Quicksand Syndrome....
"Excuse me, I've got dry forearms." I just love her delivery of that so much. 😆
She's using Carolyn Martens' moisturiser.
It's the deadpan face
omg. that was my comment
@@soijustlistenedto... the one that makes you smell like arse
Is this a throwback to when Fleabag offers to go in the other room and "moisturize her wrists for a bit" at the silent retreat? 😅
"Your little scarf isnt helping" had me in stitches
From 1:43 to 3:05 is the first time she's being true, having been completely disarmed and stripped bare by Dr. Dursley. Then she breaks and suddenly clings to us as her final coping mechanism... Suddenly we go from being a side-gag, to being an actual prop within the show.
God damn this is a good show.
dr dursley lol
LMFAOOOO not Dr. Dursley please 💀
PLEASE Dr. Dursley
'Excuse me, I've got dry forearms.'
It’s one of those small touches that makes her work memorable and real...
I love this show so much, its so funny but its so sad at the same time
But somehow it's relateable
Season 2 spoilers!!!!
Do you know what's going on with the preist? He can see fleabag breaking the fourth wall, is there a metaphor or meaning behind it I don't understand?
@@556to762 I think it's him paying attention and listening to her while most other people she knows don't really do that. Like at the first episode of season 2 when no one was interested in knowing how she was doing and Fleabag pointed that out at the camera but then the priest interrupted her by asking what she does.
Yeah I don’t know how phoebe does it
556to762 it’s meant to point out that the priest notices Fleabag and her idiosyncrasies more than her own family does; he pays attention to her and can read through her, the way the therapist does
Aunt Petunia you hid a boy in a closet for his whole childhood you're in no place to lecture people.
I SCROLLED to find the Aunt Petunia comment!!!
finally . THANK YOU
Thank you
Aha! I was also watching Killing Eve and I was really wondering where I had seen her.
Saicharan Villanelle and Caroline would make an interesting couple
"You already know what you're going to do. Everybody does." Wow, she just earnt the session right there. It's so true. We know. We just don't always like the consequences or the responsibility. But she's right. I reckon we know. So interesting. So interesting going head to head, heart to heart or soul to soul with someone. Strips back the BS. Great scene. 🙏💫
Oof. Yeah.... 😭
'You already know what you're going to do, *everybody* does'
Because right at the beginning of the season Fleabag told us, that this is a love story.
Do we really know? I think that line is a therapist's cop-out.
Nah disagree.
She reminded me of the Oracle from the Matrix franchise, telling Neo that he has already made his choice, and that all he has left to do is to understand it.

"I'm very honey and your little scarf there isn't helping"!
ROTFLMAO
This woman very funny!
beth98362 horny not honey
@@TheSinghstory Thanks, horny
There's a honey-like substance if you do it well!
is her scarf turning her on? Why?
I Love when phoebe says 'I've been here only for 5 minutes' and then her expression changes like she realizes that in only 5 minutes she saw her life unravelling
It had not been ten minutes… it had been more time but it past by her.
Didn't know Carolyn take double job as therapist beside spying Villaneve😁
I swear😂😂😂😂
That and looking after her nephew who lives under the stairs....
And tormenting Harry Potter when he gets holiday
"Are you in love with him?"
"Ha! No."
As soon as she said that, I knew she'd be in love with him by the last episode. I just finished the season an hour ago and I'm still near tears for some reason. I'm gonna watch it all again.
commenting on this so you get the urge to watch it all again 🥰
ohhhh noooooo, another reminder for you to watch it all again four years laterrrrrr ;)
I have gone through therapy and this depiction is very accurate. The pain and baggages hidden behind the humour, the mocking tone in her defensiveness towards the therapist, the hastiness to her voice when she admits to herself and to the therapist what really is the issue so as to touch (barely) on the pain and shame it came with. So much nuances on a few minutes of film but so true in real life.
"You already know what you're going to do"
Ah, classic therapist.
I’m not an expert, but I think this is brilliantly written, impeccably directed, and beautifully acted 👏🏼👏🏼
The pain phoebe is able to show in her eyes and the voice cracks are amazing in adding to the realism of how her character feels.
"Tell me about the sex."
"All of it?!"
LMFAO
I would watch a whole fleabag episode about just her talking to her therapist. Just like on season 2 episode 1, the whole time it was a dinner party. This show is so damn entertaining!
Fiona Shaw is the only thing this show was missing.
3:40 'I understand'. Cracks me up, the snappy editing as much as the candid insight. Ha ha!
the scarf line cracks me up every single time hahahah
SAME. i love it.
why is she relatable 😭
Cause shes honest
You tell us
Does anybody read this stuff? Third law of thermodynamics is alive and dying.
@Andrew Ongais You better write a book soon Andrew with little gems of wisdom like that 👍
I miss this show, it is so insanely smart and fantastically written
My co-worker said that this scene was hilarious, but I saw it as profound drama. The therapist is a bit wonky, but she’s good - she cuts through the crap.
And yet the crap is what is to be loved too
@@samo917 not in therapy
Yeah I don't think it's great form to be as aggressive and serious as this therapist lol,. But you can't do a full hour long scene in a TV show so you gotta do something to cut to the chase
3:57 When the therapist says « you already know what you’re going to do, everybody does » .When she says everybody, it’s like she got through to her and she knows her way of thinking (this kind of breaking the fourth wall/schizophrenia), great writing
What do you mean by her schizophrenia? Just curious as I’ve never heard that applied to Fleabag
nah, I think she just means everybody does, it's breaking the classic stupid excuse "I wasn't expecting (that/us?) to happen"... Well, yeah, you were
The "Oh yes" always gets me. The delivery is so good.
That split-second flashback to her punching Martin is hilariously perfect 😂
“We get on with it.”
The therapist was doing relatively well, especially for TV therapy, right until the end. The answer to her question about what the therapist is for was: to help you understand it, with that you may or may not choose to change it.
It’s so sad every time she thinks about something serious, her dead best friend always pops into her mind and she almost never talks about it to anyone, it must be very painful.
2:49 the way her face changes after she attacks. so subtle and yet so striking!
Yes! Amazing
i'm a therapist:-) . i've rewatched this scene 10 times. it's brilliant. just brilliant.
'I'm good at this.' Her delivery is just so wonderful. Just dead on.
"Them what's the point of you"?
Priceless!
👍🤗
And her face 😂😂😂
I initially didn't realize this was a miniseries. The narrative arc is so amazing in this one scene that it could be its own short film.
A masterclass of a scene.
What I noticed is when the therapist says "You know what you're going to do. Everybody does", she probably means that everybody knows what they're going to do, but it could also be understood that everybody knows what she (Fleabag) is going to do, given the constant breaking of the fourth wall/her talking to the audience.
Quite possibly the best written, cast and performed scene on film EVER. EVER. Genius.
This was a brilliantly scripted, directed, shot and acted scene!
So the edit is bad ?
"yeah, and your little scarf isn't helping"
😅😅😏😅
Everyone in this show is perfect for this show. The writing is awesome.
Feels like I’m watching the Shakespeare of comedy - I watched this clip hoping to think it was shit but it’s insanely good
M Klongerpute it feels like it is more than just a comedy show.

Oh my god the SHAKESPEARE of Comedy!? Just when I thought this series and this women couldn't get any more overrated, you go and say something like this!
Therapist is vicious but so good😂
At least he remembered her birthday
The worst part is he didn’t
He gave it to her at the dinner a few months later
You know what you're going to do.
This entire thing is so perfect, hilarious, well-acted, and brilliantly-written.
The "You already know what you're going to do" bit is a gift. Thank you Phoebe!
i will forever remember fiona shaw as "dry forearms" because of this scene
Much needed brutal honesty, in far too short supply in real life. Come on Phoebe, wear us down. We need it.
The way her expression change is amazing! 2:50 is win and 4:12 is a lose 🤣
A real hero is the director and editor, each of these shots is taken from so different takes as can be seen from the different head positions once cutting back and forth. Id say they did about 4 takes of coverage on each , at least one take of wide, some mediums, all in all about 5 hours to film this and from that they got some really honest organic choices to edit together. The DP helped so much by giving the counsel lots of room in front of her the shots, and less for fleabag, making her feel contained. Kudos.
I wish my dad got me therapy for my birthday... since I can't afford it. "I spent most of my adult life using sex to deflect from the screaming void inside my empty heart" as well.
Actually searched for "very horny and your scarf isn't helping" and this showed up
This is one of the best scenes in TV history. Not even exaggerating.
This scene is just pure gold.
ngl this is me when I'm talking to my pyschiatrist. Like you're on the verge of crying but still trying to hold it together through joking. And then you talk about your issues in the tone of talking about the weather but in this held back tone like if anyone even pokes you you'll break into tiny pieces.
Anyway, Fleabag is such a mood.
She's just as good at being Harry Potter's aunt as she is at being a therapist
Omg and I was wondering where have I seen her before 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ thx
Such an excellent show. Can't believe it's the last series. Guess it's better than doing it to death but don't know what I'll do without it.
That subtle fourth wall break
This is a perfect scene of television, and it is *criminal* that they end the clip with fleabag saying "I don't [know!]", without showing a few frames of the next scene: Fleabag at the church event, doing exactly what she knew was going to do.
Aunt petunia lol👏🏼
PWB is an incredible actress. Her emotions are so varied sentence to sentence, there isn't any expression or hesitation that is overlooked.
Therapist: “Any friends?”
Her: “... Sorry?”
😭
Brilliant 2nd series.
Thank you Pheobe.
One of the most brilliant shows I've ever seen
This scene is a fantastic and subtle setup for the confessional monologue later in the series. Like... holy shit.
'I've got dry forearms....' the angst....Oh what have I missed - this is superb.....
I get it, we're her friends, she looks at the camera and says"they're always there" awww.
Spoiler. At the end of season 2 she stops us from 'following' her. She doesn't intend to write another season...
SCD Observer I saw that last week lol....Who knows she might make another.
SCD Observer I know this season came out after a few years from the first but I only binged the first this year. This sesson was really popular so I hope she changes her mind.
I actually thought she was referring to her friend who committed suicide and how she can't get over her guilt--she's always flashing back to moments with her.
We're not her friends, we're her coping mechanism - we're the way she tries to deal with her life, but it's unhealthy, which is why at the end of season two, she waves goodbye to the camera, because she's emotionally stable enough now to continue with her life and heal. This is also why there cannot be another season. (phoebe has said all of this in past interviews)
I loved Fleabag ! But also.... how awesome is Fiona Shaw! She's just brilliant!
This is my new favorite show.
“You already know what you’re going to do” is a great lesson in trusting gut feelings
"They're always there. They're... always there." 🤩🤩
