If heavy atoms like plutonium are spaced at their normal distance, when one decays it is like the end of this video--the neutrons that are produced by the radioactive decay aren't likely to cause another plutonium atom to decay. There's a ridiculous amount of empty space between one nucleus and another, even in an apparently dense metal. When they crush the plutonium in an atomic bomb, the nuclei are forced much closer together, so that it is like the dense mouse traps. One atom decays, releases neurons, then other atoms decay in a cascade effect.

They arw in the marketing and IT world, so I'm sure I can ask pointed enough questions to increase my understanding a bit more. I have a background in sales, so I see the psychology side of things. Now it's just learning how your particular trade works. Mostly right now I'm curious how many subcontractors and independents exist outside of the hubs where the contracts come in. When I studied physics at UC Davis, they had a small version of this set up inside a plastic box to demonstrate critical nuclear fission.
