In December 2019 the Chinese authorities notified the world that a virus was spreading through their communities. In the following months it spread to other countries, with cases doubling within days. This virus is the “Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2”, that causes the disease called COVID19, and that everyone simply calls Coronavirus.

Ben P you do realize that this video is not just some normal raw video right? This video was made by experts and is carefully constructed. It takes a lot of time to make these types of videos considering they are informational vids. Maybe you should use your brain no matter how hard it is for you to understand simple concepts.
@@benp9793 I don't believe that they mean "hours" or "years" to make a video in the traditional sense of this expression. I would guess they are referring to the cumulative amount of time needed for completion - i.e. the sum of all hours that all people working on the video spend. They can still work in parallel - if two people each spend 5 hours on a clip, it will take 5 hours, but cumulatively they will have spent 10hrs.
Caught covid for the first time this month and as an immunocompromised person it was scary. Luckily I was able to get Paxlovid which is a medication given to those at a high risk of developing severe illness and makes it so covid can’t replicate inside your body. If it wasn’t for the medication I would have ended up in the hospital even though I’m fully vaccinated. After being so sick even with medication and vaccines it makes everything I went through in the beginning of the pandemic worth it. I didn’t leave my house for months, only having contact with my immediate family, I suffered extreme depression and isolation, I missed my high school graduation, and I lost friends over them not taking things seriously. But had I caught covid before I was vaccinated, before medications were available, and while the healthcare system was at the brink of collapse I without a doubt would have died. It’s good to know that everything I sacrificed saved me

China had passed on info about a new virus strain causing lung problems late Dec 2019 and WHO was already looking at this and working with China based on reports Dated Jan 09, 2020. The potential size and seriousness of the virus was being written about in news articles by mid-January.

Almost 3 years since all this shit went down. It's wild how time flies.
It painful how accurate this prediction was, and how so many refused to listen to anyone and help save people. So many lives lost, and not just old or sick people. Yes, my grandmother was old, and the nursing home scrambled to separate the sick; they didn't realize how it was spreading yet. Their air system was in need of repair/replacement.
My best friend however, she was young, she was healthy. She wasn't antivax but fear was swaying those around her and made her wary and hesitant. She got the Delta variant, it happened so fast they didn't even have time to get her on the ventilator. Only 24, all her hopes and dreams will have to stay just that, because she's gone. I miss them both so much. I can't believe it's already been almost four and three years without them. It still hurts.

Uploaded March 19, 2020. If there was one day I saw as an oh-shit moment, this was probably it. This was the day I took the bus over to the university campus, and found the libraries and classroom buildings closed. At that time, the bus service went to the weekend schedule through the whole week. Things were really gummed up for about the next four months.
TTTT I was one of the lucky ones (maybe, in part, one of the careful ones, I like to think). Got the shot and boosters when they appeared and were recommended, kept my distance from others, wore masks but TTTT only when mandated, and did more or less all right. Eventually, about three years from Oh Shit Day, a couple of days of feeling miserable, and a positive Covid test. Oddly, no respiratory sx, even though there had been a few times, in the year or two preceding, with various respiratory sx but Covid test showing negative.
The good news: We can mostly look forward toward the Future. The bad news: The Future is far from certain. Another pandemic could occur at any time, and godonlyknows how that might be handled.
Lawd I didn't even try to protect myself but somehow I never even got it xD

Speaking this as an American, I remember watching this back in March thinking that this would be manageable since people would definitely social-distance and slow the spread. Oh hopeful me. You were so young and naive.

I remember thinking we'd all actually stay home, get it under control then SLOWLY start going back out! Meanwhile my county and city did neither, didn't wear masks, social distance, etc now we are spiking up at CRAZY levels!! Ran out of nurses and ICU beds!!

People are still stuck in panic mode.
Major U.S cities have been fudging their stats to gain additional federal relief funding since C-19 hit the U.S. That skews the U.S data being fed to the CDC.
N Italy had a massive elderly population and China obviously aren't reporting their true stats to this day.
Inbetween we've allowed massive protests and full blown riots for weeks with nobody saying a word about how that affects any infection data.
No politician is willing to admit that we have assuredly killed a large part of the global economy and we still:
A. Don't know exactly how C-19 compares with Seasonal flu or SARS and likely never will.
B. Haven't stopped the spread and most likely can't actually slow it down or stop it until we have a vaccine.
Sweden is now reporting a huge drop in infections despite not locking down at all and apear to have achieved at least the beginning of herd immunity.
We do now the avg age of C-19 death in the U.S is 80 and that's with the skewed data.
So from an academic standpoint, we know sweet f*ckall about the actual infection/death rate but have slaughtered the global economy.

The media only wants viewers and their viewers are the average person. Kurzgesagt viewers are intelligent and understand things that are not incredibly oversimplified. Kurzgesagt oversimplify stuff but not to the degree the mainstream media does because if the mainstream media simplified it that much their viewers wouldn't understand what they're talking about. Also Kurzgesagt isn't pushing an agenda what's takes 90% of the content out of the video so we end up with an 8 minute video that has great animation and actually informs people.

I’d say the fast vs slow pandemic depended on where you were. In some states, it’s the lockdowns that will be more remembered while the course of infection itself was high, was not devastating.
In other states, it was treated less seriously and entire families were wiped out.

Oh, and that less than 1% death rate, isn't an accurate count when comparing to things like the 10% death rate of the (American) Spanish flu.
The only people who had the flu were those who were actually sick. The flu test wasn't invented till the 1950s.
We have the ability to know who has it when they aren't sick.
You compare Spanish flu with Covid based on those who are sick, and the death rate goes way up for Covid.

That 1% mortality rate is not true, Covid can become fatal for ages 30+ and will give a confirmed kill or lifetime disability on a person of age 60+. The reality is that in New Delhi every house lost one seat on the table. Someone died in nearly every house because of Covid, I myself lost my Grandfather to covid and the funeral is a horror show, they don't even let you see the body its all wrapped up in plastic covering, you wear covid protection plastic gear clothes to do the final rights of your loved one.
I remember them saying it takes months to make a video and then i see a title for something fresh in the world.

THE Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority has approved a contract for three new US$35 million neopanamax electric dockside cranes for the Bayport Container Terminal's Wharf 5.
The three new ship-to-shore cranes are expected to be operational in the summer of 2021 and will be the tallest to date at the port of Houston, standing at 48 metres under the spreader and will be capable of handling 18,000 TEU ships. The three cranes will expand the port's fleet of ship-to-shore cranes to 29 in total.
The port also authorised ship channel expansion work that includes "critical-path" professional services for engineering, design and project coordination. The widening and deepening of the ship channel is required for improved safety and the future growth of regional and national commerce, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
The port authority has proposed an expedited schedule whereby dredging could start by 2021 and the project be completed in 2024.
Said Port of Houston executive director Roger Guenther: "Our facilities have handled close to 30 million tons of cargo through August, an increase of seven per cent over last year as both container volumes and steel have maintained their upward trends in 2019."
Container throughput in the first eight months of the year totalled two million TEU, representing a year-on-year increase of 11 per cent. Mr Guenther said he expects to the port to handle three million TEU by year-end.

Yeah this video did not age well. It's great how thought out and logical the "flatten the curve" strategy sounds. But in practice we see how it's failed.
A sharp curve does have its merits. While it does potentially overwhelm the healthcare service it also lasts a shorter amount of time. Right now the problem with dragging out Covid is that people aren't built to comprehend long term disasters. An earthquake is fine. Big rumble large amounts of damage. People will respond. But a disease that's highly contagious and potentially fatal only gets people to care the first months it becomes relevant. Take longer than that and people will become apathetic or give up thinking they can help make things better.
Even worse than that is that misinformation and racism have plagued the response to this virus. When governing bodies are more invested in finding someone else to blame for their failures to identify and respond to the virus people are even less inclined to cooperate. Not only that but it leaves the effective strategy that we've seen in this pandemic off the table. It's immediately labeled "draconian" and a "violation on human rights" so of course you won't get a "free" society to accept them once they become the only means available.
At the end of the day the pandemic was solved by drastic harsh countermeasures delivered against an out of control outbreak which did overwhelm the medical service but burned out like a wildfire allowing the public to band together for the short term of its duration. Since April there has been little resemblance of a pandemic over there while over here not only has the curve not flattened it's become an extended curve of even worse magnitude while people prepare for the end of days.

Currently I have covid and fairly.. probably since a long term because since january I've been with a bad cold but were still able to do my lifestyle of work and school. My doctor refused to treat me after going to him several times, telling him about my bad coughing and how its gotten worse the past week. Only today, after my parents called me and my dad gotten a high fever, we both have covid. My symptoms are weird, they're just like the common flu. I feel great and can still do everything I usually do - I wouldn't have noticed it if my dad wouldn't have gotten the fever..
