- There’s nothing more devastating to pet owners than losing a beloved companion, especially if the loss is very sudden. In this video, we will talk about possible causes of sudden death in cats.
Lily Nephrotoxicity
All parts of the lily plant are toxic to cats, from the roots of the plant to the flower’s petals. Even drinking from the water tray of a lily plant can be fatal.
Lilies cause acute kidney failure within 2 days of ingestion. Without treatment, a cat will die.
Other common dangerous plants for cats include daffodils, English Ivy, azaleas, Calla lilies, aloe, begonias, and ficus. Ensure that any houseplants in your home are non-toxic to cats. Of course, preventing exposure to these dangers is more difficult if your cat is allowed outside.
Urinary Obstruction.
Urinary tract blockages are extremely common among male cats. Therefore, it's critical for cat parents to know the signs of the condition. A cat who tries to go potty but isn’t producing anything may have a urinary tract blockage.
They might sit in the litterbox straining but still not be able to urinate. This is especially a concern if the cat seems to be in pain while trying to do their business.
When untreated, most cats will die within 72 hours.
If this happens to your pet, a vet visit is urgently required.
Heart disease
Heart disease is one of the most common causes of sudden death in cats. It is usually more common in Persian cats and Maine Coons but can also occur in mixed breeds. Young, healthy cats are more likely to show sudden death without symptoms. As for cats that die from cardiomyopathy, death is often the first symptom.
Blood Clot
Cats can sometimes develop blood clots in their bodies. These blood clots can travel to the brain, lungs, or heart, resulting in sudden death in cats. If the clot travels down to the back legs, it can get stuck there and block the blood supply to the hind legs. This can cause the cat to lose control over their back legs. Blood clotting can be caused by a wide number of conditions, so you need to spot the symptoms.
Diabetes
Unfortunately, veterinarians are seeing an increased prevalence of diabetes in cats and dogs. This is likely due to the growing prevalence of obesity, inactive lifestyle, a high carbohydrate diet, and lack of exercise.
Diabetic cats with uncontrolled diabetes may develop a condition known as ketoacidosis.
Essentially, the condition progresses to the point where the body lacks insulin, so sugar can’t reach the cells, resulting in cell starvation. It’s an extreme medical emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention.
Trauma
This is more frequent in outdoor cats, but can happen to any animal. Trauma can be caused by animal attacks, being hit by a car, or even a bad fall from a height, all of which can cause sudden death, or internal bleeding and organ failure that can lead to death.
Stroke
Cats can suffer from stroke just as people can, with similar symptoms occurring. The symptoms can come on quickly and cause sudden cat death.
Plastic bags
Paper bags with no handles are acceptable for cats to play with, but plastic bags should be avoided for the same reason we keep them away from our children: Cats can get wound up and trapped in the bag, leading to suffocation.
Chronic Kidney Disease.
Chronic kidney disease is a very common problem in cats. It is a progressive illness that can lead to total kidney failure.
It is a gradual condition that typically develops over several months or even years, and is typically caused by autoimmune diseases, cysts in the kidneys, and genetics. Sometimes, it is simply a result of old age as a cat’s kidneys become weaker and weaker as it ages.
Raisins and Grapes
Cats should never eat grapes and raisins. These fruits are known to be extremely toxic to cats.
Bones and toys
Another common cause of sudden death in cats is choking.
Sometimes a cat choking incident is caused by a hairball that they can't expel, but accidents are more often the result of an object (food, hair tie or plastic toy) lodged in their throat.
Feeding your cat fish skeletons or cooked bones is also dangerous as the bones can splinter and cause harm.
Heartworm
Heartworm disease is a serious disease that results in heart failure, organ damages, and death in pets. The worms enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. As the infection spreads in the animal, infective larvae from the mosquito begin to mature into adult heartworms within the heart.
Heartworm disease is preventable by giving the cat a monthly medication. Limiting your cat’s exposure to the outdoors lowers its chances of being infected.
Toxins and Poisoning
Ingestion of toxins and poisons such as antifreeze, rat position, or medications that contain acetaminophen is one of the leading causes of sudden death in cats. Avoid using poison to get rid of rodents, and take your cat to the vet immediately if you suspect she’s come in contact with such poison.
We lost our cat in 2021 from an immune disorder that even the vet couldn't figure out. It was a 24 hour sudden event. Broke my heart. They need us as much as we need them.
My cat died just this morning, the day before she was fine with clean fur. Just today her hind legs were matted and she was making a weird sound instead of meowing. We assumed she got prisoned or hit by a car.

I am so sorry my heart goes out to you. My sweet kitty died in my arms this morning very suddenly. She was fine just 8 hours before it happened. It was so sudden and I am still in shock. I am digging up her burial place close to the mountain views that she loved. I am absolutely heartbroken since the kitty died while I was trying to give her homemade antibiotics aka silver. Not that I am not heartbroken anyway, but I really tried to save that precious girl. I loved that cat so much and had her for a total of about 13 years. Your cat will always be with you because of your precious memories. Losing someone you love is the absolute worse and cats are no different. Best wishes.

I just lost my baby Buffy on Saturday, I understand your pain I am so beyond sorry for your monumental loss. Nothing you can do or say will make anything better, only time. They are out children and family, my siameze went through lots of ups downs, she got diagnosed at the vet with rodent ulcers. She was treated and on Saturday had her last pill, seemed fine, she fell out of her litter box and knocked it all over, her one eye had goop in it, acouple hours later she got spooked and started convulsing, tongue hanging out, in and out of consciousness, eyes opening and closing at different rates, limbs floppy, head floppy, hard breathing and slowly she passed away. I will get to the bottom of this, paid for an autopsy and they didn't even look at her head I'm super pissed.

Years ago, I had a solid white cat with beautiful blue eyes. He developed a urinary blockage after getting him neutered. By the time we got him to the vet's office, it was too late, because he already became toxic from the urinary blockage, and he succumbed to it.
It happened to our cat. The stupid vet told us to put him down. But my mum didn’t have none of that and complained about the vet hospital and went to another vet and saved him. And cost 500 Australian dollars cheaper than the stupid vet asking for $1000 dollars back then. That was 14yrs ago and he will be 17 this Christmas 2023 and still strong and healthy. 🙏🏼🧿❤️

We lost our cat, Sasha, on October 26, 2021. On October 31, 2020, she had a stroke, which was very scary, especially when the animal hospital we went to thought there was a blood clot in her heart. They were about to give her a medicine to try to break the blood clot (which had a chance it might kill her) when they found out it was only a stroke (by the way, the way we could tell there was something wrong because at first, I was upstairs and heard a loud meow from her, then I heard a big thud, and by that point I was already downstairs, and I burst into tears when I saw her trying to walk with her back legs dragging). So they gave her some IV fluids and then she came home. However, on October 26, 2021, she had been scheduled to have a pacemaker put in, but she died that day during the surgery because the vets who were doing surgery on her noticed a tumor on her liver, and when they tried to take the tumor away, her liver burst, causing her to die. 😭 But on September 3, 2022, we adopted a new kitten, Maple (she's the cat that's in my picture). She's so sweet, just like Sasha! 😊

My cat died suddenly after being hit by a car. His heart apparently exploded upon the impact. He lived up to 10 years as an outdoor cat, so he did well but it was traumatising when he died.💔

Our beloved Mee died about five years ago. Virtually all of the cats in our town disappeared, then and it is still a mystery. There were rumors of someone deliberately poisoning cats. She went off her food, and the last we saw her before we went out for a couple hours she gave us a haunting look that told me she would never see us again. I still cry when I think about it.

I lost my cat star from a condition called open pyometra....it happened All of a sudden after she went into heat...she stopped eating I noticed after one day and I got her checked out...then found out she was anemic 😔so surgery was risky and I couldn't afford the bill...she died after a week...I tried my hardest to save her..she died Easter 2018....in her bed...I tried mouth to mouth with her but she died...I buried her in her bed....found out shortly after about a few weeks I was pregnant after struggling for years...I was convinced it was a gift from her..and middle named my daughter star after her😔

My mom was a vet tech and is helping my cat as much as possible.
We lost our two kittens last week. After seen this video knew aloe is poison for cats. We have few aloe plant potts in our appartement. We lost our Persian yesterday while she was at the groomers. She was only 2.5 yrs old. She was a regular at the same grooming center and around familiar people. After her bath she was ready for her hair trimming when she started choking and was rushed to the vet in minutes.
Unfortunately she didn’t make it in time. We sit here grieving wondering how could we have avoided this. The vets told us that it’s most likely a heart attack as she could have got anxiety.

Just lost my Coco to kidney disease.
I took in a stray for a 2yrs a was always called "cat" loved him to bits and got pics of him Xmas week playing happily then 31st he was asleep all day and didn't eat.1st Jan woke to him not being able to move and shaking took him straight to the vets and said he'd had a exploded blood clots on his spine and nothing they could do. We had to put him down there and then poor thing and was absolutely traumatic, I cried for days and am now thinking of him.he was only bout 5yrs old and noticed he didn't like jumping a few week earlier but not in any pain but that was it. God I wished I'd checked on it. They are like family and god you miss them when their gone. Loves ya cat ❤❤❤
Ive had a stray cat for a month now, he kept coming up to me at my job when I worked overnight, ended up taking him home, he’s only 1-2 years old so I’m hoping we can keep him for a long time and take good care of him, sorry to hear about your cat loss. I always use steam to clean my floors and house furniture , all my washing machine items are locked away her treats are never in a place where they are open to my food or drinks her bowls are cleaned in hot water and towel dry

Outdoor-cats only get to be between 2-5 years on average 😯. I did not know that. I just lost my outdoor cat, she got to live for 10 years, I guess I should be happy about that then

I found a dead cat in my shed which has carpet on the floor yesterday when I went out there to check on everything and remove a mower I was going to sell from the side of the shed anyway I found this cat and he had already decomposed for probably at least three to five days it started to soak into the carpet out there and I really didn't feel like cleaning it up right then so I'll wait it a day and went out there this morning with my shovel trying to cut that carpet piece out he had soaked into that carpet and this guy was gone totally unexplained no big dogs on my property the property is fully fenced with a chain link fence I don't know what animal would have taken him out of that shed there's holes in the side of the shed where they can come and go and inclement weather it has me pretty freaked out and to top it off when I cook breakfast this morning I found my toaster already on with no toast in it
