I played through D1 and D2 for the first time a couple months ago and I was really impressed with how much the atmosphere of the game owes to the music. Playing a game like Diablo it could be very easy to just mute the music, but for my first playthroughs I found myself listening to every scrap of music from game that I could. It remained constantly compelling.
6:50 Wilderness is really interesting. It takes the structure of Tristram and cordant nature of both the theme and the village itself, and puts a dispersant (stick of dynamite) to it and lets it blow chaotically in the wind of the plains. Boards and rooftiles and broken dulcimer strings flowing in a syncopated maelstrom, indicating that you've left the pocket of safety that is the Town and are cast out into the disarray that the daemonic influence is causing.
Excellent video as always, and Happy Birthday! Honestly, I don't think any other game franchise does the same thing these games do with the drums, I specially like the idea that the drums represent the demons so it's always odd but fitting when they kick in in tracks that you wouldn't expect. Also the electric guitar being very sparingly used is nice, really makes it stand out when it kicks in. Unfortunately this is not as present in Diablo IV, which is a shame, but it's still a good soundtrack. I really like the use of female choruses in that one.

Conclusions drawn in the last episode 45 years ago are still applicable to this day. It really feels like we all as humanity have lost something in pursuit of technological progress and profit. Always loved old Blizzard. Still play Diablo 1 and StarCraft with my dad now and again. I would recommend looking at SC1 for a music content video, lots of material there. Hey, man! Happy birthday! Toru and Harem are my favorite tracks from Diablo 2. It's a shame that subsequent Diablo composers never managed to replicate the atmosphere that Uelmen's music created.
Courtesy of this video, it really only just now hit me that Diablo 1's soundtrack is only 6 songs long, and you'll really only ever hear 5 of them in-game; it feels like the textbook definition of quality over quantity, and I think Uelman definitely leans into that mindset, because every single track is full of texture, color, and gravitas. I absolutely adore Matt Uelmen's music. He just knows how to evoke the feeling of desolation, tension, unease... but also relief, blessing, respite. Diablo 2 soundtrack is such a unique vibe, and while Lord of Destruction soundtrack goes more orchestral, there is still that same vibe to it, that carries on in the unused tracks from the first attempt at Diablo 3 that were then folded into World of Warcraft Burning Crusade - and Torchlight, heh, carries the torch, giving even more of that sound in a more light-hearted world. But another thing is, this music is perfect for the gameplay of these games. It is constant, opressive, everpresent with zero chill because... the games are like that too during combat, and they need to keep the tension while the player surveys the area for loot. It's part of what makes Diablo 2 so deeply addicting, the music drives you forward, it wants you to keep smashing the demons. The drums throughout the tracks are like the war drums in an army, pushing the tempo of battle, keeping you locked in and engaged.
Neat! Yeah, Matt Uelmen's work for this and for Torchlight is incredible. I feel like the only other action RPG that hit a similar "vibe" as hist D2 and later work was Grim Dawn, but it has a rather different approach to writing that feels more conventional.
And then Diablo 3 came along and butchered the identity of the franchise alongside the music (which is a huge part of the franchise). And let's not even talk about Diablo 4.

Hey Vistalgia! I started with 3 as well! Then I got really into Torchlight and only later went back to the early ones. Shaun of the Dead is a great movie! Evil Dead, Nosferatu, and Perfect Blue are all horror films I enjoy a lot :)

I failed a grade because of Diablo 2, when i got to Lut Gholein i stood there and did nothing just listen to the music and it made the hair on my arm stand up. I did looked for music like diablo later on, and never found it. Diablo 3 music was so bad i had it turned off in my first gameplay.
