  • What is HIPAA? Why do you need to know HIPAA if you are working in healthcare? HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. HIPAA was passed in 1996. HIPAA regulates the creation and handling of personal healthcare information, Protected Health Information (PHI).
    Protected Health Information (PHI) includes Name, address, date of birth, social security number, and any personal identifiers.
    The 5 major HIPAA provision components are Privacy Rule, Security Rule, Enforcement Rule, Breach Notification Rule, and The Omnibus Rule.
    To keep it simple, just remember that HIPAA focus on 2 important things which are privacy and security of sensitive personal information.
