@@AimlessSavantI’m surprised they even announced a physical version. They would’ve known when porting to PS5 that there’s virtually zero chance it’s going to explode in sales (especially with barely marketing outside the announcement), and they probably knew they’d shut down the studio. I mean, they don’t even have pre-orders for the disc to even judge potential sales from that angle. Glad they’re doing it, and I’ll pick it up. But makes no sense as a business move. Lies of the j'die
You don't know from old ;)
I was born in 1975.
There is no one to one comparison with previous prices or products. How about, products are absolutely not built to last anymore. True, they are generally cheaper, they often are more convenient to use and easier to acquire, and they also have more useless functions added, more electronics inserted where they're not needed, they break down faster and more frequently, and are more difficult and/or expensive to fix. What are such differences worth?
In other words, Dev is mostly wrong.
It's fine if you're into buying and trying out the newest technology, but that's a choice, not something that is decided for you. Not so fine when there's no alternative if you value durability more. What's worse is that planned obsolescence isn't just for small electronic products, like the phones that you can't use anymore because companies deliberately reduce their functionality even if they're actually working fine. The same practices and tactics are in play when it comes to cars & appliances, which used to be built to last for decades, and, as opposed to furniture, which can still be found in higher quality if you save up enough or buy the old stuff second hand, those don't last even if you're willing/able to buy higher end.
You might think the advantages of a newer car are worth the loss of durability, and that's perfectly valid in some cases. But is a washing machine, for instance, really cheaper if you have to replace it or fix it for an unreasonable price every several years instead of decades? I've been using those things for about 40 years now, and I can absolutely tell you that they haven't improved to an extent that would justify the drop in durability.
Bottom line, it's nearly impossible to compare pricing over decades in any meaningful way. The only thing that matters, ultimately, is what people are willing and/or able to pay, and this goes double for entertainment products. Fringy is absolutely right on this point. You need food and shelter to live. You likely need a phone and a form of transportation to work. Video games, movies, streaming, etc. are luxuries, and you'll only pay the price at the intersection of what you can afford and what the product is worth to you, and no historical calculation of pricing or arguments about CEO salaries or even a full night's "research" worth of a video will change that.
dev being dev as per usual
#5:07:00 No, DEV, NOOOO. System resource usage is not indicative of the complexity / quality / fidelity of a game, this is a nonsense graph. I play indie games that abuse the shit out of system resources and take minutes to load on a hi-end PC, but still look like ass compared to AAA, while being simple as a stick.
The passion of the indie games community massively outweighs the willingness of AAA development studios to improve their quality, and I think that one of my favorite indie stories is the one surrounding Helltaker. There was once a guy who really liked sharply dressed demon babes, so he made a simple block-pushing puzzle game, got a youtube music person to make the OST for it, and put the game on Steam for free. It was an overnight hit that still has a passionate community to this day, despite the game itself taking less than an hour to complete. The developer even put out a small expansion a year later (also for free). The only paid dlc he ever put out was for the artbook, which also came with a pancake recipe.
Unlisted Gang is unlisted. Gang.
He looks like Brendan Frasier in "The Whale"
The inflation with quality of good thing is kind of iffy if you ask me. Yes, my PC is better than it was 20 years ago, but I do not get more utility from it. 90% of the increase in capability is eaten up by increased hardware requirements for everything from Windows to Word. And I definitely do not get more utility from outlook than I did 20 years ago. Websites are way heavier than they used to be as well. So yes, it is better, but I cannot get a new computer based on specs from 20 years ago, and if I could, chances are I wouldn't be able to properly use it for modern requirements. I could type in old word, but then I would need to send it to a colleague, at which point it turns out layout compatibility isn't perfect. Or worse, I get a modern document and old word has no compatibility at all.
"What you buy now is better than what you bought 20 years ago" stops being relevant when I cannot decide the stuff from 20 years ago was good enough and remain at that level to make use of the reduced prices. I am required to buy the modern stuff.
"More bang for my buck" but I do not require that much bang.
Yeah, programmers forgot how to compress thngs. You are lucky if demo takes below 10 gigabites of memory. Visual novels, drawings with music, can weigh 16 giga because of pictures in 4K ?!

Overpriced factor food is the only thing that bring me joy in life
Some things we buy today are of better quality than in years past but a whole lot aren't. Things built 30+ years ago were built to last. Things now are usually built to be replaced in 5-10 years or so.
Yeah 100%. The Super Nintendo consoles STILL work even after all these -years- DECADES. People only replaced them because there was a stark upgrade in technology.
Nowadays, if people could just keep new getting XBox 360 games at the same graphics and same memory, they absolutely would.
All i want is a simple console that works well enough that I can plunck on without thinking about and have it just work.
The ONLY reason I have a Series X is because of entirely arbitrary system changes, intentional file bloat, and graphics upgrades that don't even matter if the design is shit.

The original Crackdown (open world city, destructible environments, vehicles, detailed comic-book artstyle, sporadic exposition dumps from a narrator) all fits on an 8.5GB DVD
COD is that big only because they are selling it digitally and don't spend time/money on optimilization
3:58:05 quality oh homes has absolutely dropped. the lumber, even if just the skeleton and then you finish with some other material, is of a noticeably poorer quality. Modern AAA games suffer from the same problems as hollywood blockbusters...

He’s one of they’re oldest guests. And been on many times. Basically a staple of memefaps.
Even if they're your friends, don't humor them, normalize not laughing at bad jokes.
I like when they make detailed arguments in response to videos. I like when they banter and go on long tangents. I HATE when they spend 15-30 minutes doing neither because ever they pause 30 seconds for 5 dumbass adlibs that weren’t funny or meaningful enough to be worth acknowledging. It’s a better listening experience when they let someone finish their foolish/weak thought and THEN tear it down with their arguments instead of stopping halfway through a thought, spend about 5 minutes arguing against the predicted statement, spend 45 minutes on an interesting tangent, play the rest of the sentence in the video, pause again to reiterate their critiques now that everyone is reminded of the topic at hand, then repeat.
Regarding the graphics portion of the argument, I've noticed so many games nowadays rely extremely heavily on resolution scaling for performance. My 1080Ti isn't what it used to be, but optimization has gotten so bad that I need to use dynamic resolution to get above 20 FPS in most AAA games.
I want to throw my PC out the window sometimes, have a Ryzen 5800X and an RTX 4070 Ti and some games still struggle to get 90fps @1440. Games like Mechwarrior 5 which is a couple years old.
So then I end up playing Death Must Die, Dwarf Fortress, ToME, or Balatro...

It's quite telling to me that the go-to reason that makes a console worth buying seems to be exclusives. It screams "Our system isn't good enough on it's own" and it's really sad how some people seemingly hold it against the console when the company behind it is more pro-customer and releases their games on other platforms. You are literally saying you want them to be more anti-customer. I, on the other hand, am quite happy with this because no exclusive will ever make me waste hundreds of dollars that I can spend on upgrading my PC or buying games.

People need to realize that there was also a change in the business world, especially in the gaming industry, from the mid-2000s to the middle of the 2010s after the repeal of Glass-Stegal which allowed a lot of previously prohibited practices as well as the change in corporate governance and compensation.

46:00 I'm a big Metroid fan, but I'll forgive you just this once, Dev, because I'm also not the biggest fan of Super Metroid. Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely a seminal game, its level design is top notch, and it introduces absolute staples of Metroid like the Speed Booster and Super Missiles. But the controls and the floatiness just don't click with me. And neither does Samus's movement speed; her walk is too slow and her run is too fast. But you can chalk that all up to the GBA Metroid games being my introduction, where the jumps are snappier and she has the perfect in-between speed due to the lack of a run button.
In a game like Destiny 2, wherein microtransactions are seemingly not wanted or are fair by most fans met6rics, I would say that Having them changes Nothing, technically, except for some of the constant facts that appear throughtout gaming content with paid extra stuff: The Paid Extra Stuff is ALWAYS cooler than anything already in the game, to the point where, well why play the base game and get base game loot? When I can just buy the coolest looking shit for a couple bucks. No matter the price, it's dumb for that reason, had these cosmetics or extra things been earnable by some annoying method IN-GAME or they werent 100% universally cooler than base game shit, this problem Goes Away.
I liked the Xbox Kenect games
Does dev include 3d land and 64 DS in his list?
probably not. It is the least like the other 3D games. It is more in-line with the 2.5D sidescrollers.
64DS is just a worse version of 64, there really isn't any reason to rank it.
@@BoxyBrown717 it's more than just a stripped down version of the original game. They compensated that with the extra levels and characters... I guess it's an Expansion Demake
@@UnicornStorm They added 30 stars, different characters to play as, and mini games at the cost of how functional the gameplay is. The controls and character movement in DS are absolutely awful and they even compensated for this by making all the characters except Wario have better jump height than Mario did in original 64. Honestly, the mini games they added were the better content then what they did to the base game.
@@BoxyBrown717 these are good points, but don't adress your original claim that it is JUST a worse version of Mario 64. There's enough in there to make it a different experience even if it's a worse one
