Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus.[note 1] An abortion that occurs without intervention is known as a miscarriage or "spontaneous abortion" and occurs in approximately 30% to 40% of pregnancies.[1][2] When deliberate steps are taken to end a pregnancy, it is called an induced abortion, or less frequently "induced miscarriage". The unmodified word abortion generally refers to an induced abortion.[3][4] Although it prevents the birth of a child, abortion is not generally considered birth control (another term for contraception).
When properly done, abortion is one of the safest procedures in medicine,[5]: 1 [6] but unsafe abortion is a major cause of maternal death, especially in the developing world,[7] while making safe abortion legal and accessible reduces maternal deaths.[8][9] It is safer than childbirth, which has a 14 times higher risk of death in the United States.[10]
Modern methods use medication or surgery for abortions.[11][needs update] The drug mifepristone in combination with prostaglandin appears to be as safe and effective as surgery during the first and second trimester of pregnancy.[11][12] The most common surgical technique involves dilating the cervix and using a suction device.[13] Birth control, such as the pill or intrauterine devices, can be used immediately following abortion.[12] When performed legally and safely on a woman who desires it, induced abortions do not increase the risk of long-term mental or physical problems.[14] In contrast, unsafe abortions (those performed by unskilled individuals, with hazardous equipment, or in unsanitary facilities) cause 47,000 deaths and 5 million hospital admissions each year.[14][15] The World Health Organization states that "access to legal, safe and comprehensive abortion care, including post-abortion care, is essential for the attainment of the highest possible level of sexual and reproductive health".[16]
Around 56 million abortions are performed each year in the world,[17] with about 45% done unsafely.[18] Abortion rates changed little between 2003 and 2008,[19] before which they decreased for at least two decades as access to family planning and birth control increased.[20] As of 2018, 37% of the world's women had access to legal abortions without limits as to reason.[21] Countries that permit abortions have different limits on how late in pregnancy abortion is allowed.[22] Abortion rates are similar between countries that ban abortion and countries that allow it.[23]
Historically, abortions have been attempted using herbal medicines, sharp tools, forceful massage, or through other traditional methods.[24] Abortion laws and cultural or religious views of abortions are different around the world. In some areas, abortion is legal only in specific cases such as rape, fetal defects, poverty, risk to a woman's health, or incest.[25] There is debate over the moral, ethical, and legal issues of abortion.[26][27] Those who oppose abortion often argue that an embryo or fetus is a person with a right to life, and thus equate abortion with murder.[28][29] Those who support the legality of abortion often argue that it is part of a woman's right to make decisions about her own body.[30] Others favor legal and accessible abortion as a public health measure.[31] The Soviet Union under Vladimir Lenin is recognized as the first country to legalize abortion on demand.[32]

everybody has a right to choose, but I also think it’s important that everybody chooses to protect themselves in whatever way they can whether it’s condoms or birth control because I keep seeing videos of women laughing online about this is her third abortion, and it is not meant to be used in that way.. like that. It’s hard on a mothers body. It’s harder on her soul its never an easy choice just know that this is not an easy thing and shouldn’t be treated as such..

I support everyone’s choice to do what they feel, who am I or who is anybody else to judge them because we all have things we have done past present and future they we regret, do regret and will regret. Not everybody thinks the same or acts the same and that is okay. Nobody is under any jurisdiction to force another human to live a life by their rules. Whatever the law says that’s what goes and no basic human has the right to tell anybody what to do with their body. If your money isn’t paying for it or you aren’t raising a child or carrying one your opinion does not matter.

@@FctHvn Yes, you may think it's silly but I think regretting having a child is far worse. If a child knew that their mother regretting having them and/or never wanted them from the start, that would be very damaging for them, even throughout adulthood.
Lets not forget about the mother's life too. It would never be the same again, as children are a expensive and life-long committment. It might drive her to be bitter, or even abusive, especially if the child was the product of rape. The mother would be reminded everyday and still have to spend thousands of dollars to raise the poor kid. I know several people who were the product of rape, and their mothers don't love them. They go through Hell everyday, and sometimes continue the cycle of abuse once they're on their own. This is an unfortunate reality for many children, and it can impact them for the rest of their lives. With the right to choose, nobody has to suffer.

A fetus’s right to live does not trump mine. Just because you never donated your non essential organs to someone dying on the transplant wait list, that does not make you a murderer. The same thing is true about removing a non-sentient, non-breathing, non-thinking clump of human dna from your life support (womb). You do not owe anyone the use of your body. That’s what the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is all about. Abortion is therefore a constitutional right.

In that line of logic, I should be able to kill someone who cuts me off in traffic after I brutally brake check them (knowing what the consequences may be) because it was a potential risk to my life, that person was (in my perception) inconveniencing me and I just plain feel that my poor whiny self is entitled to feel good all the time.
Aside from extremely rare circumstances, abortion is sought by people who can't take responsibility for their own actions. My vote is that if a woman has had a voluntary abortion both she and the baby daddy should be fixed/neutered so that they can't have the chance to conceive and kill again, as they have already proven that they value their personal comfort over the actual life of another human.

Thanks @Medical Centric for posting this video. Here are the viewpoints expressed by Supreme Court justices regarding abortion rights.
Abortion is a controversial issue in the US, with some people believing it ends a human life, and others believing it is a woman's right to choose. For most of US history, each state has been allowed to make its own laws on abortion.
In 1973, the Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade established a nationwide right to abortion, based on the Constitution. However, this decision was based on incorrect information and is not widely accepted.
Roe v. Wade ended the process of states gradually liberalizing their abortion laws, and instead imposed a highly restrictive regime on the entire nation. This decision has caused a lot of political division in the US.
In 1992, the Supreme Court revisited Roe v. Wade in the case Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey. The Court did not endorse Roe v. Wade's reasoning, but ruled that stare decisis (precedent) required adherence to Roe v. Wade's 'central holding' that states cannot constitutionally protect fetal life before viability.
The Constitution does not mention abortion, and there is no right to abortion implied by any constitutional provision.

    • @ericarn
      @ericarn Před rokem

Unlike the “restrictive regime” we’re living in now in Texas and other backward states? The Dobbs decision has only increased support for abortion rights as people are becoming less ignorant around it.
Nothing changed in the law when “SCOTUS” ruled in Dobbs. The only change was the makeup of the court, a 50 year Federalist Society project to overturn abortion rights and push other anti-American Christian Nationalist views in direct violation of our founding.
Of COURSE, “abortion” was never mentioned in the Constitution, how ridiculous to assume it would be when women weren’t mentioned, nor reproductive rights, nor embryo/fetus. We did, however, have “unenumerated” rights listed in the founding, one of which was women were able to receive abortions up until “quickening” or when they reported a fetus was moving, roughly around viability, as before in Roe/Casey. Don’t even get me started with the repeal of slavery and what that meant to the original writers in regard to bodily autonomy. 🤦🏻‍♀️
You’re just repeating something I have seen before, nothing original in your opinion.

The Hippocratic Oath clearly prohibits abortion:
The original Hippocratic Oath, written in Ancient Greek, is typically translated as follows:
"I swear by Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfill according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:
To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art-if they desire to learn it-without fee and covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the medical law, but no one else.
I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.
I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.
I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.
Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.
What I may see or hear in the course of the treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep to myself, holding such things shameful to be spoken about.
If I fulfill this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot."
From ethical perspective there are MEDICAL situations however where abortion may be necessary.

69 yr old NC registered nurse, Christian, and mother of 2 daughters here to tell you something you may not know . Research this interesting fact online if you doubt its truth ...
During pregnancy, fetal and maternal cells cross an area of the body called the placental barrier. In other words, for a period of time, there is an exchange of cells between mother and fetus. With that cellular trafficking, science shows that a portion of fetal cells stay in a maternal body after giving birth. They may exist there for months, years or even decades.
    ( Snopes article published 03-19- 24 )
In addition, even when a mother aborts her child, fetal cells that remain in her body aid in the recovery of wounds in the mother...
Scientists have found fetal cells in scar tissues, specifically scars left by C-sections. It is theorized that these cells from the baby help the mom recover after birth by repairing wounds. But the healing is not just limited to childbirth. In a separate study, fetal stem cells crossed the blood-brain barrier and became neurons. Another example is breast cancer. A case-control study on fetal microchimerism and breast cancer found that women with fetal cells were less likely to have had breast cancer

Personal liberty (legal definition): "the right a person has to behave as they like, subject only to interference for appropriate government reasons (such as the protection of other citizens' liberties)."
"Liberty is the right of a person to do as they please, assuming their actions do not violate any laws or infringe on the rights of others. What is personal liberty? Personal liberty's definition is the right of individuals to be free of arbitrary restraint or bondage. In short, personal liberty allows people to live as they choose without interference from others unless it is for a good, legally-established reason."
A pregnancy is not [a] person with all the rights, privileges and equal protection of the laws bestowed upon actual persons upon their birth. The pregnant girl/woman is [a] person. 1 U.S. Code § 8 - “Person”, “human being”, “child”, and “individual” as including born-alive infant
    (a) In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, or of any ruling, regulation, or interpretation of the various administrative bureaus and agencies of the United States, the words “person”, “human being”, “child”, and “individual”, shall include every infant member of the species homo sapiens who is born alive at any stage of development.
    (b) As used in this section, the term “born alive”, with respect to a member of the species homo sapiens, means the complete expulsion or extraction from his or her mother of that member, at any stage of development, who after such expulsion or extraction breathes or has a beating heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, regardless of whether the umbilical cord has been cut, and regardless of whether the expulsion or extraction occurs as a result of natural or induced labor, cesarean section, or induced abortion.
    (c) Nothing in this section shall be construed to affirm, deny, expand, or contract any legal status or legal right applicable to any member of the species homo sapiens at any point prior to being “born alive” as defined in this section.
    (Added Pub. L. 107-207, § 2(a), Aug. 5, 2002, 116 Stat. 926.)

"The unborn" are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike orphans, they don't need money, education, or childcare; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. It's almost as if, by being born, they have died to you. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe.

About pills: Remember guys, Britney Spears did this in 2001 and said her experience of killing her baby with medication not only was very painful and bloody, but has haunted her for years, the baby would now be 22 years of age. @MedicalCentric  Před 8 měsíci +10

It's important to approach the topic of abortion with empathy and understanding, recognizing that individual experiences with abortion can be deeply personal and complex. Britney Spears' statement about her own experience is indeed a part of her personal journey. However, it's crucial to remember that people's experiences with abortion can vary greatly, and the decision to terminate a pregnancy is deeply influenced by individual circumstances, beliefs, and emotions. For many, it is a difficult and often painful choice.
It's essential to provide a supportive and nonjudgmental environment for individuals facing such decisions and to respect their choices. Abortion is a complex and multifaceted issue, and individuals should have access to comprehensive and accurate information to make the decision that is right for them based on their unique circumstances.

According to WHO and the Guttmacher Institute, at least 22,800 women die annually as a result of complications of unsafe abortion, and between two million and seven million women each year survive unsafe abortion but sustain long-term damage or disease (incomplete abortion, infection, sepsis, bleeding, and injury)

Maybe for some individuals they do want kids. And they’re excited to be pregnant. But some women have intense depression during pregnancy from the surge in hormones that can make every aspect of life difficult. At that point, if the mother has no quality of life, is so suicidal not because she doesn’t want to be a mom, but because her mind is being ripped apart, is the baby more important than the mother?
There are many many reasons someone may have an abortion. It’s not a decision that is made lightly. You never know what is happening in the mothers life where they may choose to have an abortion.

Every human has the right to bodily autonomy. A zygote/embryo/fetus isn’t an autonomous being. Hundreds of human rights groups around the world have condemned the abortion bans in the US, possibly consider why. Every time abortions rights are allowed to be voted on, even in conservative states, the overwhelming majority of people vote for abortion rights or against restrictions. Dobbs has only increased support for abortion rights as people become less ignorant about it and realize women with *wanted* pregnancies are suffering when their pregnancies go wrong. It know its very hard and I hope you're doing well, but trust your instinct at the time. If your boyfriend was as irresponsible to misuse something as simple and fool proof as a condom he might have been an incompetent father. I don't know, that's how I see it with my boyfriend.
