I love the passion for history I’ve found among the YT community, and this podcast knocks it out of the park. The level of detail is just perfect-if people need more, that’s what books are for :). I’m a professional historian and I think you calibrated this correctly for a listening audience, whether they be new to the story or old Roman history hands . The drama is in the push-pull from East to West and you captured it beautifully. Cheers!
I hope you have spent time in Budapest (I assume you have since you’ve been to Istanbul and Rome). Every other Hungarian guy is named Attila. They have a proud legacy and a non-Indo-European language that is the direct legacy of all the events you describe here. It’s fascinating and still very much alive ❤️❤️

You literally cannot understand the world without understanding history. If the US did, it would never have invested a dollar in trying to create a functional Iraqi government. The islamic sectarian violence and fundamentalists in the ME - which eventually incited “global war on terrorism” 🙄 - has roots that are literally 4,500+ years old. Assyrian campaigns of conquer and its collapse multiple-millennia later, created a large scale tribal feud across the levant, which simply acquired new names as time passed. Before they adopted Islam, the same people who would later become sunni and shia already hated each other.
Yes we are proud of our ancient Leader. We don’t call him Barbaric though 😂

Some people might feel listening to history podcasts while trying to go to sleep hampers learning it, and I think that is partly true. However, considering most people do things much less helpful for sleep, listening to something educational while it helps you sleep is just great.

I have quite literally listen to and watched tens thousands of CZcams videos and of course skimmed most of those. I've heard and watched hundreds and hundreds of narrators and hosts. You sir, whoever is the narrator of this video, is simply the most outstanding narrator of them all! Your voice is clear strong and very listenable. Your knowledge, your depth of knowledge of the subject matter is extraordinary. Your style in which you relate the information is compelling and entertaining. As a as I lay here in bed listening to your video parentheses that's normally how I digest so many videos, I literally go to sleep with them and the parentheses. So this is the most fascinating narration about the history of Rome that I have ever listened to. I look forward to listening to the remainder of this video. I am at the 1 hour and 15 minute mark. I discovered your channel totally by accident. And I certainly hope you have many more historical videos for me to enjoy. The Huns to me always sounded like some fantasy antagonist but way more terrifying. They are this unknown group of warriors that worship a war God and can blitz through territory like butter. But the best part of their story is that they where so powerful they got the Romans and Barbarians to work together, which is something I never thought possible.
It takes a really impressive enemy to unite people - take WW2 for example
The Huns do seem like fantasy warriors, especially because we know only fragments and they vanished as quickly as they appeared. They didn't have a slow decay and collapse like the Mongols, who were eventually overthrown, assimilated or reduced to serving in other peoples' armies.
So glad to have found this. It was a true pleasure. Even pulled my own copy of The End of Empire to listen along. When I heard it referenced I paused and ran to my bookshelf because I couldn't exactly remember the book I had. Inspired to read it again now. Thanks man. I look forward to more of your stuff.

Severely underrated
not really.. "Dan Carlin's Hardcore History" is the top history poscast ever... He spent hours on podcasts with Elon Musk talking about warbirds of WW2 and was on Rogan, Lex Fridman, etc.. Wouldn't call it underrated

Correction to the start of the video: Attila & Bleda led them. Huns were not too different from any other power including Romans, they were just the best at it in the region at the time.

Atilla means aytilla, means Golden moon, his sister's name gaylin means gulan, his tribe name munjuz, means thousand heavy, all the names currently names exists in Central Asia, perhaps Atilla hun escaped by bullying white huns, or black huns but black huns would be uighurs, white huns would be uzbeks, some east side of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan. In the end they could be Crimian tatars, Gagauz, or other turkic people.
As a HUN-garian never heard about Atilla-s name meaning, thank you for letting us know!

A very enjoyable podcast! While I enjoyed it all I especially enjoyed part one as it puts a lot of things into perspective. When you study ancient Rome the word barbarians gets thrown around a lot, and you can't help but see a lot of Rome's enemies as foreign conquerors trying to get their piece of the crumbling roman pie. The fact that many of them were people trying to build a new life for themselves among the Romans that only became hostile due to Roman's elitism or at times their ruler's insanity is something that a lot of people don't understand.
People were people - with the same wants, needs, desires, and vices

"How many people are called Attila today?"
Well actually it is a popular name in Hungary. That's becouse Hungarians used to consider themselves as the descendants of the Huns, and it is stil a popular myth in the collective memory. I heared that Bulgarians also like to think of themsleves as descendants of the Huns, and many Central Asian peoples think highly of Attila.
Medieaval Hungarian chroniclers commented on the Hunnic atrocities, that "every great nation births from great violance, so did the Romans, so did the Macedons, etc". And indeed it really depends on the point of view. For a long time the whole world considered Napoleon a villain, a "world robber", except for the French. Westerners have this hateful memory of the Huns becouse they suffered from their campaigns, but they don't have such memory of the Mongols, becouse they didn't have direct contact. Even though the Mongols had the same ruthless, genoicidal war methode.

Although even if every other Hungarian was named Attila, it would still be a relatively small percentage of the world population. Chances are good that if they moved or did much business out of Hungary in English speaking countries they would use a nick name.

You ask, how many people today are named Attila. Actually, quite a few. It is a common name in Hungary. I have a distant cousin named Attila.
Thank you for this podcast. Being from Belgrade, and Serbia, this history feels very personal to me. If it wasn't of these events, my ancestors wouldn't have settled in the Balkans.
You are not the first to mention this. A lot of my subscribers are from Serbia and are fiercely proud of their history.

For his video, I would just like to note that the Huns were able to write and write at a time when europe was made up of sporadic tribes. Let us not forget that they had an empire when Rome was just a village. Mesopotamia, India, China, Mongolia, etc. are full of written memories of the Huns.
