Veterans Administration Disability Rating for PTSD
""You may think once the VA has granted your claim for PTSD, there is nothing left to do. Your
monthly payments start and you are entitled to free health care at any VA facility. However,
just because your claim is granted does not mean you have gotten everything you deserve. You want to be sure you have been assigned the correct rating.""
PTSD in particular is a difficult condition to diagnose and treat, because the best way to assess it is by looking at a veteran’s behavior and the impact of their symptoms on their day-to-day life. For that reason, many veterans who are service-connected for PTSD may be rated lower than they deserve. Traditional hospital examinations do not always give the full picture. We will look at the Veterans Administration’s rating levels for PTSD and what symptoms correspond with what rating, so you will know whether you should ask for a higher rating.
The Veterans Administration is phasing out its 0% rating, which means a veteran has totally managed their symptoms.
A 30% rating is assigned for manageable symptoms like hypervigilance, anger, depression, avoidance, nightmares, and flashbacks.
A 50% rating may include symptoms from lower ratings in addition to speech and communication issues, cognitive impairment, issues with following complex instructions, regular panic attacks, and problems maintaining relationships.
A 70% rating may include symptoms from lower ratings and suicidal thoughts, obsessions, near-continuous panic or depression, impaired impulse control, spatial disorientation, appearance and hygiene issues, and difficulties adapting to stressful circumstances.
A 100% rating is reserved for veterans who are totally unable to maintain professional, family, or social relationships, along with any number of the symptoms mentioned above.
