    Vermont Unplugged Half Marathon on Saturday. 20s and windy. Exactly the same time as the week before, but with a porta-potty stop along the way. 6k easy, then 10k at target pace, final 5k at 5k pace. Execution was nearly flawless. I ended up running in my "old" Vaporfly Next%2, instead of the newer ones or the Vaporfly Next%3 which arrived on Thursday. You know, nothing new on race day ... or the week before 🥽. Then yesterday ran 29km on country roads with a 500m hill, in my new Hoka Challenger 7s. They were perfect. Starting with a coach this week to help me navigate my many races this year and beyond. Next race is Canyons 25k in three weeks.

      That's an solid race strategy and well done on the execution! Was the wind from the north?
      Also, well done knocking out the 29km the day after the race! 💪🏽 Very strong! Glad to hear the Challenger 7s worked so well for you!

    Great stuff, Matt! Running shoes today are all amazing compared to what I had when I started, but I feel lucky that I got used to running with good form without much help from the footwear. Or maybe I was blessed with pretty good natural mechanics and injury resistance, and I'm lucky again if that's it. I think there's one guy who gets quoted in all of those articles and always says that the running shoes you feel most comfortable in are usually the best choice, and I'd go along with that. I like the idea of rotating between very different types of shoes to let my feet work a bit differently, but I also think suddenly switching and doing lots of runs and miles in a totally new style of shoe is asking for trouble. I also suspect that a big proportion of injuries are from people who decide after a couple of months of running to train for and run a marathon. You can see that play out all the time. As for training, great job with the early taper week, Matt! You know you're backing it down when you run fewer miles than me.😅I had a very strong week and finished with just over 39 miles, the first time IIRC that that's happened. On Monday I did 4x 8 minutes at around half marathon pace, and I also did some short, quick runs on Friday and Saturday because it was in the low 40s and pouring rain and there's nothing more miserable than slow running in cold rain. Then yesterday's nice 10 miler finished it up. Hoping for all the best for you in Boston. Safe travels and great weather!

      @its_Matt_B_  Před rokem

      Thanks so much, Eddie! It seems that no matter what logical hypothesis is proposed, there is an equally logical counter argument to it.
      I agree that a big proportion of injuries are from people ramping up way too soon, but I'm pretty sure that's a lesson that needs to be learned by everyone! We all know how good it feels to see improvement and think to ourselves that if we just ran a little more and little faster we'll see even bigger gains!
      Good call on the faster runs in the rain. I don't get to experience it too often, but slow wet cold running does indeed sound like a miserable affair!
      The weather doesn't look ideal, but it's still a week away and in the end it doesn't really matter; i'll adjust my goal based on the conditions presented and be happy with it!

    Great info here. Whenever you review a max cushion shoe, you should note that max cushion shoes increase impact forces/injury risk. As you recognized, most people think that the opposite is true.

    I've been running in the same shoes since October or November and I'm at about 350 miles in them. They're starting to feel pretty dead. My feet were hurting on my run this morning, and the cushion used to compress much more than it now. I'm getting ready to replace them. I think I will go for the Hoka Clifton 8's although the Nike Pegasus 38/39's sound pretty similar. Thanks for the guide!

    Very interesting video. I used to run in stability shoes but don't anymore- I was frustrated with the lack of options and wasn't sure if they were actually helping. Now I'm trying to deal with the cause of my pronation (which seems to be my arm swing).
    I had my first proper run in my Alphaflys this week. Until now I had only run a couple of 8-10 km in them and wasn't sure if they were gonna work for me. I think the problem was that I hadn't a really good lockdown on the laces. Sorted that for a 26km effort on Sunday and they were awesome. Feeling tuned up for the Belfast Marathon!!
    Good luck in Boston!! 🎽👟

      Good to hear that you identified the cause of your pronation, and also that it was something that is (somewhat) easily fixable!
      Solid run in your Alphaflys and i'm glad it was something as simple as tightening the laces to make them feel good! If only it were that simple with all shoes!
      How long of a taper are you doing before Belfast! It's almost time to start!

      @@its_Matt_B_ I've started tapering 3 weeks out.
      The laces are nobbly and there's a different lacing system. It essentially gets you a stronger hold when you do it right.

    🥽 I wonder what max. cushion and plated shoes were covered by the study. I am not a very fast runner but the plated shoes with new foams do provide an edge for me. However, early attempts to copy Vaporfly/Alphafly success with just increasing the EVA foam and throwing in a rigid plate failed miserably for some manufacturers so it is not just stack height or the plate but high energy return foam (principal source) with appropriately shaped plate (to a lesser extent) that gives that propulsive push. So, without knowing what shoes they used and the methodology it is hard to generalize the study.
    Great taper Matt. Try to keep your legs fresh, and anxiety checked in and concentrate on getting enough sleep this week. It will help more than any last-minute workouts. You already have done what you could do, and I think you had a great prep.

    • @its_Matt_B_
      @its_Matt_B_  Před rokem +1

      It's funny to think about the early days of carbon plated shoes and every company that wasn't Nike seemingly being caught on their heels! They've caught up now, but it took a while to figure out the formula!
      Thanks for the encouragement! My anxiety is fairly low as i'm not going for any records and it should be a fun weekend!

    My hypocritical theory is that instead of using specific shoes to correct issues which lead to injuries, we should correct the imbalances in our body instead. (Says the girl who hasn't done running specific strength in a month. ) 😂 I do know about the greater impact with max shoes, but I just enjoy my runs more with a little extra padding, and my legs and joints feel better during/ after. We all just need to do what feels right, so long as it doesn't lead to more injuries. I'll avoid the carbon plates for a while... it still seems too much like cheating. I'm sure they'll become "normal" eventually, and I'll give them a shot. My week was great until a VERY heavy box of flooring fell on my foot Thursday. Today will be my first run since then. 🤞 👓 (ish)

    Hi Matt! My recent run was the weekly running class yesterday. I have not ran a short interval (14*400) for 3 months. It started a bit aggressive as I just simply followed a senior mate for first 9sets. I am impressed I could keep a stable breathe with a 10% less effort (just mentally) and without losing paces in the program!
    My running career is just half year and Boston 10 is still my only shoe in key sessions (I got another retiring Boston10 in easy run as rotation). I tend not to to buy new models as less pricey. But I now still searching for a rotation for my Boston 10. Do u think Hoka Clifton 8 is similar to Boston 10 when comparing foot feeling? My fd said he felt softer on Clifton 8 than Boston 10. I am picking among Clifton 8 and Rincon 3?
    I start to watch your running vlog recently whereas I used to watch your shoes review I am interested. Your vids are informative!

      Hey! Thanks for watching the vlogs! The Boston 10 is a solid shoe and so is the Clifton 8, but they are very different. The Clifton 8 is a lot softer than the Boston 10 and so will probably feel better on your easier everyday runs. I bet you can still drop a good effort in them, but they definitely won't feel as fast as the Boston 10s!
