Unboxing and Testing a Harbor Freight Air Compressor! McGraw 3 Gallon!

- In this video we do an unboxing, and a few tests for this Harbor Freight air compressor. Seeing how long it takes to fully build up pressure, seeing how it works with the air tools and how loud it is. It is loud but I do believe it has to do with the oil free motor. This Harbor Freight compressor is lightweight, and has a nice clean look. My old compressor finally got to the point of having more issues than was feasible, and I decided to purchase this one based on reviews and price, compared to some others on the market.
Hopefully, if nothing else, this video may help you make the choice of whether to buy this one or not. So far, I think it's a good one, although I've not had it long. That is the Mcgraw #57572 by Harbor Freight!

It's good to see real ppl doing honest reviews. Thanx Brad....This was just the evaluation I was looking for. Seems ppl can't absorb good info without a horse and pony show.
Thanks so much! I’m definitely not a flashy person, pretty old school IMO. Just trying to do some good old woodworking, tool purchases and reviews on my channel, and hopefully enough people enjoy it!
Or a dog and pony show sometimes too
@@TN_HondaDad yes sir, exactly
We got a leak by the air intake and it's not shooting the Brad nails at all
@@RemyAlphaElite is it in one of the fittings?
I just bought this little guy & I just want to thank you for your review!
I appreciate that more than you know!
Thanks for this. Needed to get one of these to air up scooter tires . Never had one of these .
Great little compressor other than the noise! Enjoy!!
Thanks Brad, helpful vid. Reupholstering an old couch in SF.
Thank you! Good luck with the project!
Just bought one three weeks ago, caught a sale and paid $47. Happy with it. 👍🏽👍🏽
Congrats!
It's a cheaper brand by Harbor Freight. It's naturally going to be louder, slower, etc. than the name brands. But for weekend warrior dad like me, to blow up bicycle/motorcycle tires, the low tire on the mini van and to blow out the corner of the garage with the air gun; the noise and time it takes to fill up the tank means nothing to me. Sure beats the ole hand bicycle pump! :-}
For sure, I kinda feel like it may have something to do with being an oil less compressor, but I could be wrong, works well though!
@@Brads-Woodshed Waiting to find one cheap at HF in the coming weeks for the Holidays. Thanks for the review.
@@TN_HondaDad yeah I’m sure they’ll have coupons!
Please tell us about the Regulator knob
Feel that for sure! I just snagged one of these for $38! My Harbor Frieght had a stack of these for that price.
Glad to see someone using it for sinking nails because everyone on the net says you need at least a 6 gallon but this would be fine fine for baseboards me thinks
Oh yeah! Should do just fine!
Came for set up knowledge of this unit with pressure gauge and connection and the “buttons and knobs) info, but this was also informative.
I appreciate that and I appreciate you watching!
me too!!! What is that thing on the left side...safety valve?
I just bought mine yesterday to use with my framing nail gun should work just fine.
By the looks of this video and how it works for him that is the exact same air compressor as his she worked just fine.
Good deal! Hope you enjoy it!!
@@Brads-WoodshedIm sure I will.
Thanks for the informative video!
If you would have read the instructions, you would know that there is a break in period of 15 minutes before use. I'm sure viewers would like to know that.
Bought one with a gift card just so I dont have to lug my giant makita around to do some molding in my house. So far so good it pushes the nails in yeah it clicks on pretty often but I does the job for sure I'm happy with it.
My biggest complaint is definitely the noise but it works well! Thanks for watching!
The “old un” I love it. We speak the same dialect. Thanks for the review lm looking for a small compressor to air up “Tars” and such.
I appreciate that! I’m so glad when I make a video that someone appreciates. Makes me feel like I’m doing something right!
I got the pancake version with a palm nailer to backbout nails from reclaimed wood.. loud but works great.
Yeah, my only real drawbacks with this little compressor is the noise and how long it takes to build up!
Do you think it’ll run my framing air nailer? I will only use it for small jobs around the house, such as the one I’m starting this weekend. It’s a lean to roof off the back of the shed. It’s about 10’x10’
Yes! Very easily, as a matter of fact I use my framing nailer with it, just know because of the smaller size, you will have to wait for it to build pressure more often, but still works just fine!
Appreciate the video bud 👍🏼
Appreciate you watching!
Hello! Question: if i were to use 50psi from full 3 gallon continuous without stopping. How many seconds do i have to use up the 50psi? Thanks!
Nonstop it’s gonna use it fairly quick! No idea on the exact amount. Even my 26 gallon uses it fairly quick if one using it nonstop!
Yeah I just used mine outside and it's so loud. I'm thinking about going back and maybe upgrade to something quieter.
My only negative so far! I forgot I had it on the other night and it scared the crap out of me 😂
Nice video, thanks. Please be sure to cover the breaker panel in the background. I saw what happens when someone gets fried. He had to go in an ambulance to the hospital.
Yeah I got the panel without a cover and have been trying to think of something to use for a replacement
6 months and its still 69.99 at H freight. just picked one up. the piston ring on my old compressor broke so this will have to do for now🤙
So far mine seems to be a good little compressor, just noisy!
@@Brads-Woodshed just used it 2day for the chainsaws worked perfect for what it is nice and small to carry in the truck to the woods🤙
@@hunter1776 good deal! Glad it’s working out for ya!
Got mine for Father's day and its way too loud and slow. Any idea if the fortress brand is better? Mine fills in 5 minutes as well.
Have not used one, but maybe look for one that is not oil free. They tend to be quieter!
Good video
Thanks I appreciate that!
Man for being as small as it is this is for sure the loudest compressor I've owned but it is a good compressor for small things around the house
Very loud! I’m thinking about buying one of their 20 gallon oil lube compressors for larger projects. Might be quieter too!
Btw You got yourself a new subscriber!
I truly appreciate that!
I just bought this one, completely new to this type of thing. How do I fill the tank with air?
Plug it into 110v outlet, turn the power switch to on!
How's the compressor holding up?
Any info you can share pls.
Holding up very well! Still loud 😂! Does everything I need from it
I use to clean my rc car and work perfect I love it....good power to clean around, tire, clean my engine is worth the money
Awesome! Glad it’s worked out for you!
@@Brads-Woodshed do you think this compresor will hold up for 1 years or 2 year whit takecare
@@FORD150-5.4 yes very much! I have a larger one also that I’ve had for a lot of years and no real issues!
@@Brads-Woodshed yeah mcgraw are good compresor but free oil I not sure hey if i make 2 year cleaning my rc car i goin to ve happy i will buy again for sure...
Mine takes 15 min to fill. I have the drain valve shut and the pressure valve set to high pressure. What am I doing wrong?
Unsure! That may be having issues, if new you may wanna let them replace it!
@@Brads-Woodshed thanks for the quick reply. I think I'm gonna go with the Rigid 4.5. Seems to be what a lot of people use for auto detailing.
I can't control pressure to the tool. Does turning the regulator knob clockwise increase or decrease pressure to the tool?
Clockwise should increase pressure to the tool
@@Brads-Woodshed Thanks. I wasn't sure because the + and - icons on the knob, combined with the feeling the turning the knob toward the + sign was tightening the regulator (righty tighty/lefty loosey, and all that), confused me.
@@philupdegrave731 Have a good one!
Did you run it for 15 minutes with the condensation valve open as per the instructions?
Didn’t record it but yes!
Ok, just thought that might have a effect on how fast it builds air
@@bescott9317 tbh just about every oilless compressor I’ve dealt with or heard about is a bit on the slower side! I have a large one as well, builds fairly slow and is loud. My old one that used oil built up quick and was fairly quiet, but for the price I can’t complain too much!
Would this work for 40 PSI car tires?
Yes! Will work just fine! Just takes a bit to fill the tank!
Will this pump up at truck tire? The old red cheap harbor freight compressors would not really.. wondering if this would work or if i should just soend another 50 and get a kobalt or what not
You talking large truck or pickup? Pickup should be no issue, just takes a bit to build up!
@Brads-Woodshed yes a silverado trail boss with 33s. Nice thank you I think I will purchase on todag
@@yayaa8721 enjoy!
@Brads-Woodshed thank you for the quick response I subscribed just because you got right back to me
Thank you
@@yayaa8721 I appreciate that!
Are you able to use a 3/8 hose?
Yes although it uses 1/4 pipe threads
What is the + and - knob for? Can’t seem to figure out
That changes the pressure build up
So when I plug it in, in what position should it be on?
@@maryannramos8631 that really depends on the Tool you’re gonna use. Some require more air than others. You really adjust this when you run it and it kicks off is the best way to tell. It goes up to around 125 psi I think. For instance when I use a nail gun I adjust it to around 90 psi
Just bought one yesterday and the regulator knob (+ -) is completely seized and does not move at all. Does it need to be powered on in order to adjust or is mine just a dud??
Not my first compressor, but I’ve never had one that doesn’t adjust at all.
I just picked one up today. I got it on the clearance table for $27.99 as is. I think it was a good buy?
A good little compressor! I use mine quite often but it is a bit on the loud side, and a little slow about building pressure but that seems to be the nature of these oil free compressors
Hi, can you do light sandblasting with it?
Possibly very light, sandblasting does require a good amount of air!
Thanks
Would it work with a hand sander? Or to weak?
Thanks for the question! A hand sander that is air operated uses a lot of air which this is not capable of. This is great for nail guns, possibly airing up tires and such. For a sander it would require a fairly large compressor!
@@Brads-Woodshed thank you for the response
Ok. Has no hose or hardware included?
Correct, no hose or anything basically just the compressor!
I bought the pancake style version of this compressor, on sale for $49. It developed a leak near the manifold within 30 min. HF charged me a 20% restocking to give me a refund. Ordered a Makita.
Wow!
Where’s your panel covet
It was off then, it’s on now! A friend of mine actually gave me the breaker box and had misplaced the cover, but finally brought it to me!
Keep the tires properly inflated.
It’ll do that for sure!
most of the units in this class aren't that durable.not just..hf.still looking 4 another 1 worth the envestment
Probably so! The noise so far is the worst thing, and if it dies I’ll look for something different, but for $50, it’s not bad!
Can I just add a portable tank to this?
Not sure what you mean by this, you can definitely fill a portable air tank with this!
you need hearing protection with that!!!
True! Didn’t realize how loud it was gonna be!
Don't buy it is super loud I got one try it and return it and surprise harbor freight charge re staking fee. If you welling to risk it go ahead
Since your quick to reply..would you buy a 12 year old used oiless 15gallon compressor? What would you do or look for with it before buying it? Its a campbell housfeld for 50$ i plan on having the guy turn it on and run it first..im bringing a hose and tool to test it.....online said this brand is good for about 12 years....but that all depends on use i would assume and if the guy empties it each time to no rust out internally...any trick questions you suggest are appreciated....i figured ill ask him how long will it hold pressure when not used to see if he emptied it....said it needed a empty valve which i bought for 6$ and will install before buy so i can test it...thanks again
So I really feel like the oil free compressors are loud and slow in my experience. My old compressor I replaced, I really liked, it was quiet and fast build up. But those are bit harder to find these days it seems! I do think it would probably be fine if it’s in good condition
@@Brads-Woodshed ok cool..I'll take the drive and atleast check it out. If I feel it still has a few years in it I'll buy it unless the owner seems like a dummy. Thanks again for responding, these days saving a few bucks goes a long way.
@@DontInterruptMeCunt I agree!!
I bought this exact one on open box 40$ and even then it was just not worth it. Takes too long to fill and couldn't even pump a car tire with the initial pressure.
