New Wilderness Off Grid Cabin, Milling Lumber, Building an Outhouse and a Ladder

- čas přidán 8. 04. 2021
- Spring has arrived at my wilderness homestead! I start building an outhouse with lumber milled from trees on my property, I make a wooden ladder out of saplings and I explore the creek as the last of the ice melts off the beaver ponds.

I'm glad you don't feel the need to clutter your videos with music like most seem to do. The natural sounds of the bush and you working are so much more enjoyable. Nice job!
I agree with you. Nature makes it’s own music, if you just listen.
@@coolgrandma4952 💜
I’ve been saying that for 4 years, it’s way better to just let nature do the soundtrack!
Totally agree!!
Same same
Who thought that it can be so relaxing to watch a guy building an outhouse ;)
I am wondering, how do you break down everything if there is no emptying it? Lime, or something else. I will have to google it!!😉
I was about to add the some similar comment, how fulfilling is it to watch growing the built step by step, each step being a success. My actual daily experience is more like attempts and blocked results by some hindering or failing process that postpones expected results. Be Zen and go back to basics grasshopper.
Gotta build the outhouse so there’s a place to hang the tools.
@@darlenekozlovskis6907 Hi Darlene. I do believe that people do sometimes use lime after each use but do not traditionally "empty" the hole. They dig a new hole and use that dirt to fill in the previous hole. They move the outhouse over the new hole.
💜💜💜
It speaks highly of your character how you say "Excuse me" to Cali when she's in your way. Such respect between you two.
Lovely compliment. 🥰
We adopted a former feral cat, and we always acknowledge her presence when she walks by, or we have to walk past her. It is a sign of respect and safety. She knows she won't get stepped on, and that we give her space.
I was only just telling my friend yesterday about the channel, listing all the reasons why this is my favourite. How Shawn treats Cali was right up there.
In one video he told her to move over there, please. Always the gentleman.
I thought the same thing. They love and respect each other, as it should be. Man's best friend.
33:26 "Excuse me Cali" Shawn is lovingly polite. Lol
He’s Canadian, they all say excuse me or sorry at least 50 times a day otherwise they loose their citizenship 😉🤣😂🤣👍🏻
@@expatmoose my daughter must have been a Canadian in another life then. Shes always sayin I'm sorry. I thought it was because of her spousal abuse.
Such a Canuck 😊
Shawn I have to tell you, I watched with my 3 yr old grandson. The whole time he was going WOW WOW.He would look at me point at the tv and say wow Nanny.
Great family bonding !
So sweet 🤍🤍
Some day Shawn James might have a grandchild that will probably say the same.😊
@@bonniemoore4056 That little one may be a mini Shawn James.
Man needs a ladder, man builds a ladder.... unheard of in this day and age!
I was quite taken with that as well!
Hear ya!
It reminded me of the time he had something cooking over a fire and he needed a stirring spoon....so he carved one on the spot!
@@janonthelam3418 I know!!!! Amazing!!
@@janonthelam3418 right! i'm just in awe of this man!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful life with all of us! It appears that 74 people put on their Envious & Petty Boots to give "thumbs down". One would think that instead of being closed minded & emotionally small would be able to find inspiration, calm & beauty. One cannot speak to those who will not listen & learn. Instead, they prefer being the small minded people they are, never achieving anything in life that Truly matters. Much respect to you Shawn!!
I usually comment mid way through Shawn's videos, cuz I get overwhelmed and have to say something. If there were Oscars for CZcams videos, Shawn would be marching up the steps to accept his award. Cheer again from Parry Hoot.
What the phuck is Parry Hoot?
No angry troll question. Like honestly I've never heard of that and it sounds funny. I'm scared.

I think most guys want to do what you are doing, I think it's just in our nature, but never did for one reason or another. When I was much younger, I watched a 1969 movie called "My Side Of The Mountain". It was about a boy around 15, year old who went up in the Mountain to live on his own for a while. I never forgot that movie. I was 14 at the time and made a list of all the stuff I would need to do it. Now I regret that I never did anything like it. It may be why I like watching those of you who build what they need to live off the grid with nature.
May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face. Stay safe.
That milled lumber is like sticks of gold with the insane lumber prices these days!!
$8.50 Cdn for a standard 2X4X 8 ft at the box store this week... crazy!
@@Rayceemon A lumber package (no trusses) for a 1600 sf home last year averaged about $13000, this year the same house package it runs about $46000.
The whole country is going down and being somewhere so secluded is a pretty good idea! I’m thinking about buying a cabin in the mountains of Pennsylvania! But like you i don’t want neighbors and you can do anything you want to without bullshit from neighbors!
Funny thing happened a few weeks ago. I was in the Elevator and my Neighbor got on, she has a new dog. I brought up the fact of your dog being so well trained. Turns out she is a subscriber of yours as well as I. Small world..
Yes, a cup of tea and my self reliance. My day is perfect❤
Thanks for the many blessings!
I love this...."excuse me callie", and she dutifully gets up and moves, such respect between man and his dog, wonderful to see. Your new homestead site looks so tranquil i like it much better than the old site, not that i didn't like that one but this one is just wonderful
Tracy I agree with you 100% !
I understand things more by watching it being done rather than hearing someone talk about a process. The whole nature photography thing blends seamlessly with watching you work. It’s very satisfying overall. I enjoy it very much. Thanks!
You couldn’t be more correct Kat Lur.
There’s no stopping you now! That will be a wonderful homestead.
@@perry9774 Yes, Cali is a faithful companion and a big bundle of energy.
The new beginning of My Self Reliance and Cali. Let's go Shawn we were here to support you all the way 👍🇵🇭
Absolutely! So many of us! Haters don't have a hope! IE
I enjoyed this video more than any of your previous ones and I've been following your channel for a long time. Your energy and absence of chat is what I enjoy most.
How amazingly clever is this man....I’ll just build myself a ladder......I’m just so impressed with this guy’s intelligence and capabilities WOW
💜💜💜 I agree with you. He is quite extraordinary in every way 💜
I can't stand videos when people post and I have to adjust sound volume every 10sec... YOURS are always bang on Shawn. 👍👍
From you talking to your chainsaw cutting, it's always at the same volume. Amazing and proper editing right there bud ! LOVE all your vids 🤍
It's called normalization and done by one click in editing software :)
But yes, the whole experience in his videos is great and relaxing ...
@@patrick.771 Thank you Pat. I wasn't aware. Soooo many vids out there that I really wanted to see but as soon as music starts blearing I can't stand it so its cut short. Good to know though, thanks again 👍
As much as I love Joe Robinet I can't stand how the audio is such a mess.
I’m glad to see you’ve got some help this time (machinery) you need to make sure that tennis elbow stays away on this cabin build👍🏻🍀
I remember if you don’t😉 greetings from Germany, stay safe
Lol, I remember all too well.
Literally nodding off aa he's sawing logs. Not sure why its so relaxing
No Friday would be complete without Shawn James uploading a video. I am so glad to see the snow just about gone and Spring arriving!
I can endlessly look at 3 things: how the fire burns, the water flows, and you build a hut))

And Callie!

Wow, such beauty! Being in the middle of the US, I never knew much about Canada or Ontario. You have captured the beauty of your region and I now know alot more about where you live. Canada is so beautiful and Ontario is awesome! Thanks for sharing your life with us. I went back and viewed most of your video's and now I feel like I know and understand you. You are a awesome man!
It is beautiful, but it becomes a whole lot less enjoyable in person when the black flies, deer flies, horse flies and mosquitoes hit. They each peak at different times, but some of the worst of their cycles overlap. For those of us experiencing it all vicariously via video, late spring and summer may seem the most beautiful -- but the reality when you are there in person is different. Simply put: the bugs are awful - just *awful*.
That's why Shawn prefers the late Fall, Winter (and early Spring). For 6 to 7 months, the bugs finally stop. The other 5? Not my cuppa.
@@roberttrifts2737 I hear you! I hate biting flies and mosquitoes. To bad there is not a way to get rid of them!
@@roberttrifts2737 We have been here since Sept and "missed" the bug season but I can tell you the beauty is well worth it...or so I say now...will see in few months. Few black flies already but they are mostly interested in the beech tree sap.
@@Heisstrong Trap flies may work.
Great blanket or towel rack when you finish using the ladder or a hanging pot rack.
Ah, better then my suggestion of a Trellis.
what a cool place with those crooked pines and sun between trees
I got up this morning kinda out of sorts. I got my phone and saw a video from Mr James and gotta say, my mood got a little better. Made me happy!! Hi Cali.
An hour of Shawn and Cali and the most gorgeous scenery....don't mind if I do.
Those ice formations are so pretty. A beautiful video which I love to watch while relaxing. 💯❤👍
You missed your calling with National Geographic I think, Those nature shots are beautiful.
I really like that Saw Mill, the best way to go hands down, good job.
I want one. Even though I live in a high rise.
I didn't think it was possible to improve on perfection but your videography and content in general just keeps getting better and better.
Isn't that the truth!
Love the "oh, I need a ladder; let’s build one". And as always: great camera work! Thank you, Shawn.
Thank you. I found your channels last fall and have watched nearly every video you have posted. I love what you do, the hard work, the nature, and Cali! Thank you.
Who else loves that no matter how hard he works he takes the time to throw for Callie?🖐
Callow tries to get toy close.
well part is he cares for her part is also it gets her out of the way for a little ... so fun and good safety for cali ;)
You gotta take care of your co-workers!
Cali's able to prompt him quite well!
Me! Good dog owner!
great to see you have a helper for hauling the logs !
It says a lot about how we live nowadays that most folks watching this find it both inspiring and relaxing. As well as recognising the disconnect perhaps from the natural world in our own lives. Thank you Shawn and Cali for sharing your time and adventure with us. Much love and blessings to you both 💓
Shawn, if you were to ever write a complete guide to self reliance book in the future, I will not hesitate to buy it
Totally agree. I cant watch videos off grid so would love a book.
ALWAYS WATCHING FROM PHILIPPINES🇵🇭❤️❤️❤️
And I'm watching from France 😏
@@kleinbli And I'm watching from London UK.
I'm watching from the Himalayan foothills in India.
As much as I like watching the bush skills, I am super excited to see power tools being employed. You do so much work and for your health, I think this will enable you to get so much more done with the similar physical effort exerted. Far more sustainable for you with modern tools in your hands. Congrats.
Where do you learn these skills? Just his use of tools is impressive.
Cali has such strategy, putting the red throw toy right by the hole being dug. Saves on her masters energy too. Such consideration & team work.
Haha, she has a few training dummies and I reckon she places them strategically where she thinks Shawn will be walking.
😄
Thank you Mr. James for all the filming and sharing to bring me the quiet and peaceful time of my day.
Hour long video? OHH YEAH!!!
I love how Cali still always finds patches of snow to go lie on, shes so cute!
This man knows what matters, the first thing you build is your throne room...!!
Well when you gotta go....
Hardest working man in the internet! We are always learning some thing!
Watching you work long hours in the woods, Shawn helps learn being self reliant.
This is exciting!
Sometimes I feel as though I'm sitting there watching you while soaking up the Sun rays ☀️ and running my fingers through Cali's hair...
The shapes that ice takes on the plants and limbs is truly amazing ... and beautiful. ♥️
I'm glad to see these conveniences you're using to get the job done. Wear and tear on the body is nothing to mess with. I can't imagine hand cutting every tree...ugh.
I love it! The sound of the wind and the stream in the background is filled with tranquility and positive energy. The outhouse is looking good, great start to new beginnings. I can’t get enough of Cali, she’s always by your side keeping an eye on you and waiting for you to toss her toy. Loved when she went to fetch her toy on the other side of the stream, but as she was crossing back, she leisurely dropped it for a few seconds to get a drink of water.😍🤗
Hello Shawn .
For some time I have been thinking that cutting peat to burn in the cabin would be a good idea for You .
2 days work could supply You a full winter of peat for heating and cooking .It burns with an even heat very slowly and is not dirty like coal .You would not need to work so hard at chopping fire wood .
I saw a vid of how the Irish farmers do it .
They use a tractor like Yours
and put a plow on the back that cuts the peat into blocks .
Then they collect the peat on a wagon snd take it to the barn and put it on drying racks .
By winter it is dry enough to burn in a stove .
Watching a vid on this would teach You how to bulld a plow .
Watching You cut wood all the time when I know there a a better way concerns me ..
However I realize that the problem is that it creates a huge hole in the ground as time passes , The Irish dont have a lot of trees to harvest thats why they turned to peat .
You have options but as You get older cutting wood becomes less desirable .
Ok bye for now .
Mike
Marvellous to watch. Marvellous! I feel as if in another world.
I love it Cali laying right in the middle of the side walls you are building for the out house how cute is that? Very funny. These Goldens always have to have their eyes on us and if we walk into another room our Golden is right on our heels lolol. Fantastic ladder build perfect for what you are doing. Free wood from mother nature too!!!
I've seen someone who used a galvanized garbage can with the bottom cut out, set under the seat of the outhouse. He somehow connected under the bench in case he had to move the outhouse to a new location. It helped to keep the hole from caving in. Once finished it looked better than many indoor bathrooms I've seen. Lol. All the comforts of home in any community... Nice work..
Going to be better and more beautiful than ever!!
Shawn James is living his dream.
It’s a shame u have to restart but I love watching the changes and things u have learnt and are doing in the new build keep it up and good luck mate
I'm new to watching this. I was wondering about that first cabin I saw with the amazing outdoor kitchen.
Does anybody know roughly where this amazingness happens?
Amazing filmed in the deep forest.
I've said it before.. but watching Cali have the absolute BEST doggo life is a joy.
From day one I always knew it was just a matter of time before I saw a bandsaw mill, a UTV and a snowmobile. Theirs still one thing missing though. A compact tractor with a frontend loader & backhoe. Perhaps a few other attachments. The human body is designed to take a beating but the long term effects wear on you. Use the mechanical advantages available to you so you can continue to preform the daily lifestyle tasks in you're later years. Best wishes & God bless !!!
Good to see that despite your set backs with your first homestead you are marching forward with a new one. Some people would just sit and cry.
Oh...here...let me just make a ladder from scraps...😏lol
You are "the man" Shawn!😚
20:00 - 24:00 four minutes of heaven! This is one civilised man. We are lucky to be able to witness his work.
Building your ladder while building an Outhouse. You surprise every time. Cali , looks great.

Stunning shots of the ice shapes melting off the trees. And there's something about creeks that always pacify me. Great ladder. Looks lighter.
Have a great day, Mr. James!
Fantastic effort and we all love Cali

I love seeing Shawn and Cali it’s just so comforting to watch
It's so nice to watch you work while not destroying your tools and machines. I have stopped watching several channels on off grid because when they start to act like yahoos and break or destroy everything they touch, well, that's not for me. You on the other hand use your head and don't abuse what you have. Of course, machines break down, tools can break but there is no need to rush them to their demise. Really enjoying your 'new adventure' videos!

The two most important things on a job sight are ? You got it right on Shawn!!!
You know Shawn, being a building contractor most of my adult life, the first video I watched was a video of you doing the bed in the cabin. I watched and what I loved most about the video was, there was complete silence, no talking. And I felt, this was a real good way to show how your existence was in real life. You enjoy the solitude and only the sounds of the wildlife and all that goes with it. I suppose one can take the silence as how ever they want to but, that's the way I saw it. I do enjoy your input from time to time but, I already know what your going to do B-4 you do it. With that being said, I wanted to just express my feelings towards your video's and explain why I like the silence or music as you work. Keep them coming Shawn, I love all of them!!
I just still can't believe your starting over. I've been watching since the beginning and was so sad. Totally understand why. Grateful you let us on this journey with you again. Peace!!!!
The perfect balance of Cali, construction, great views and solitude. Always look forward to your next video.
