- A rainy week at the off-grid wilderness homestead encourages me to go fishing and catch up on some chores - installing gutters on the greenhouse, carving an ash handle for a bark spud, digging holes for fence posts. I cook fresh fish in a cast iron pan on an open campfire for lunch and beans with dried mushrooms for dinner. At the end of the video, I explore the wilderness near my homestead, filming a fawn whitetail deer with its mother and capture more wildlife by drone.

This is better than Netflix 😉👍
much more!
Infinitely better. Binge Cali chasing her toy in the woods.
Yup
The best.
Much better. Netflix is terrible now anyways. And they make you pay for it 🤦♂️
Impossible to note all of the things I love about watching you, but a highwater mark was watching you render the bear fat to oil your new tool handle. This is truly what symbiotic living looks like. A few weeks ago we learn you killed a bear and already we've seen it become food, oil, a preservative. Of all of the tools you have, the one I love best is the bench where you make shingles and hone pieces of wood. There's an illustration in Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Farmer Boy," where Almanzo's father is making shingles. Your bench could have come straight from that long ago and faraway farm. That's what I love about your work and ethos. You channel the past to forge a better future. Our forefathers and mothers would approve.
I am genuinely curious, wouldn't animal fat turn rancid?
@@tremperj Rendering the fat removes the majority of contaminants and other materials that allow the fat to turn, thereby slowing the process down. Much like one boils jellies, etc. So eventually, yes, it will turn, but most likely not at the rate he uses it, and not if properly kept.
Loved those books as a young girl. Reread them at 30.🇨🇦
@@ashleighjaimaosborne3966 I reread them nearly every year. When I discovered Shawn, I sent the link to all of my siblings with the tag line, "Pa lives." They all immediately made the connection. Those books are my touchstones and lodestar. Just love them.
@@michaellyons5208 I think that fat will not have the chance to turn bad. Shawn will use it up. 😊
The greenhouse is looking great! 🌱
We just posted an update on our website: 🇨🇦 there is officially a Growing Dome greenhouse in every province and territory in Canada!
More and more Canadians are updating to a sustainable lifestyle, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of Shawn and My Self Reliance for helping to inform and inspire.
I bet Alaska would buy them too, good news!
@ArcticAcres. Wonderful comment, true to every word. Feeling inspired and alive, about the increase of sustainable living too, thank you!
Well done
Love to watch NATURE more beauty than television.
Thank You Sir, with a world in crisis, these videos remind me, of a world at peace and a nature filled with beauty. You and Cali bring smiles for your ongoing adventures. Blessings to you and your lovely family.

Filming the work of the week including the daily routine.. I miss this so much
Here I sat bored as hell listening to this and that.......and then there was Callie's channel!!! OH How I love Callie !! THANK YOU
Hi I would like to thank you for all the beautiful pictures of natu0re tat youlsre so fortunate to live in.I no longer csn get out into the woods to enjoy the natural beauty so I am living through you and i really enjoy all you are doing. Be safe and continue the awesome filming that you and your family are doing.
You are an old soul Shawn, just like Richard Proenneke. Your "simple" lifestyle is anything but. It is as rich and wondrous as the stars. Watching your channel as you interact with the land and water (as well as your dog and family) is profound. You are a teacher and your message brings inner peace. That you!
Seeing places like this gives me some hope for wildlife in the future.

One of the things I like about your channel. You don’t talk a lot
You let thinks speak for themselves

Wish he would at least say what he is doing and for what then record sawing an sanding stuff.
Honestly, in a pinch, you could live in the green house. I'm just fascinated by it! When you started building it I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out how it was all going to come together, but it's just incredible!

Someone in Germany build a house inside a Greenhouse. Pretty cool if you ask me.
I can almost smell the rain on the forest floor, the wood smoke fire, and the fish. That's how good your photography is.
He should do a coffee table book of his photographs! I would buy it!
Sorry just thought if something else.

S McKee Your comment brought a tear to my eye and caused me to choke up. What a heart-warming anecdote about your father. If your father is 98 you need to find some way to go see him now ! The Democrats have their teeth firmly sunk in and they have control . Freedom is never going to return ! What Beauty, you bring us ,SHAWN…of the forest ….the ferns ,the lakes …Cali🥰what a guy …an inspiration…your happiness shows ❤️
Cali is a girl dog.
A Grandmother from Oklahoma USA, been watching for a coons age. Speaking of tools and their care, I thought this might interest you if you haven't already heard it. Origin of the phrase, "Don't fly off the handle".
In the days before mass merchandising, poorly fastened axe heads would fly off while they were in use. The result was dangerous, hence why the phrase is used to describe risky behavior with unpredictable results.
Your character, determination and integrity show through in your videos. That is so refreshing and rare in these times. Thank you for your time, enjoyed every minute. I LOVE your beautiful dog Cali. God Bless you and your family, Linda.
Rains are a relief to the soil and plants during the summertime, I hope Cali finds rainy weather that great too.
Yes, I expect Cali loves to cool off after heatwaves and wavewaves (wagging her tail) 😊
On behalf of the envious multitude of us still living in the termite mound, thanks for the videos. Enjoy your wilderness as long as you can.

It hurts my heart a little every time I watch one of your videos. Living in the city, watching the news, watching and listening to our society get a little worse everyday, wishing I was in the woods someplace doing what you're doing. The choices we make have long term consequences, as much as I would pack it all in and do something similar to you, I cant force my family to do it. Please keep making the videos, as I find what little peace I can in my day by living vicariously through you.
The sound of the rain is so refreshing to our drought parched ears in Southern California. We so long for some heavenly moisture
Bob Blossom ,
Really ? My brother-in-law , a native southern Californian once said, " The only rain that he wants to see is that which comes out of the end of his garden hose . " He was a fairly typical southern Californian. Wants no rain coming down ( rain at 3 A.M. might be acceptable as long as it stopped at 6 A.M. ) and no snow.
How small a human being is in this tremendously gigantic beautiful nature.
yeah
how are you doing?
The rain is a blessing straight from heaven, so fulfilling to see and hear. The foundation is so neatly organized, just waiting for your industrious hammer. Your little dwelling is cozy and safe. It was very soothing to observe Cali and yourself busy and happy.
Hang loose, ya big moose, and "little moose," too.
My hubby and I built a cabin from scratch in Alaska in 1976. We were newly weds! Loved our adventure! Great memories! So much fun watching you Sean! Brings back good memories!
Love Callie she is so cute. Love when you throw her toy. Your rain catch is working great. Your do beautiful work. Love how you use the tools from old times.
I enjoy watching these videos so much, God's creation is definitely perfect ..! God bless you in that beautiful place.
I just do not think you know How much of a Genius you are. Your wife & girls know it, your other family knows it, your colleagues & friends know it!! Blessings thanks for inspiring all of us who watch. ( I am a woman single divorced mom older than you....such a great find here. Following since end of 2018.)
Good to see Cali is feeling better. Will she need to have her coat thinned in summer? Our Chantilly cat, Fussbudget, got heat exhaustion and I had to run cool water over him... Ever tried holding the business end of an angry weed eater?
Anyways, I never get tired of seeing your little slice of heaven, even vicariously it is so peaceful and beautiful. Thank you for letting us get a glimpse every week.
I'm impatient to see your next openair kitchen, it will be easier to you !
Truly paradise.
Ann Jones ,
" Paradise " comes at a great cost. It is truly hard work to live as Shawn does. It is easy to watch in a video but very hard to do for real. I am watching a man building a log house for his mother. He slipped and fell against the trailer hitch of his truck. Broke four ribs ! He had help nearby. What would Shawn do if he slipped and fell onto a rock and broke four ribs ? Help for him is a long way away as well as a long time away. It could be a long time before he had any assistance and medical treatment.
@@donaldmiller8629 Definitely agree. While I am not as isolated as he is, out in the country with 1/2 to 1 mile between houses, gives one a taste of that isolation. Case in point, I sat down in the shade of a tree to cool off and a limb broke off 25ish feet up and landed on me. Called for help - no one could hear me. Took me an hour to crawl out from under the limb. Tried to walk and found out something was very wrong so I sat down and called for help. This got the dogs barking and after a half hour or so my husband finally heard me. Had a broken Clavicle, broken Rib, and three broken vertebrae. Yes, sounds like its out of an "I Love Lucy" episode. Paradise always costs something.
You are a king in your kingdom. And you are the luckiest guy in the universe. You are living the most beautiful place in the world. I am really jealous

I am a second generation rain gutter installer, so seeing gutters always raises an eyebrow... your use of the cutting tools is way above average for a guy who doesnt use em everyday... ive been very impressed everytime you have worked with the copper or metal cutting tools!
I could be wrong but I believe he made a living for a while in sheet metal.
@@duanewilson3941 well that would make sense... I have had some Boeing old timers just giggle at stuff I did with my snips and big reds... told me I should go work for Boeing...lol
Yep he was a sheet metal tradesman. He owned a commercial roofing business.
There's nothing tastier than fresh fish seasoned and cooked over a fire in a skillet. Do please take care with those sharp metal edges and your bare hands, Shawn. You don't want cuts out there in the wilderness. Your gravity-fed water-collection system on the greenhouse is so brilliantly simple, and it will take more than a big bad wolf to blow down your workshop/temporary living accommodation. It's nice to see your sitting-on wood-working bench in use from the old cabin, and watching such basic tools as a drawknife and rasp in use too. No splinters there, for sure! You sure live in a lovely part of Canada. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I never cease to admire the way you make your lifestyle look so rewarding at 74 years I can only say good on you
Gloomy day here in Peterborough, but the rain has been a welcoming sight. Seeing the wet forest brings many memories of summers spent in the Haliburton Highlands at various relatives cottages and camping trips. Repairing tool handles and sharpening, I still do it to this day. Thanks for the pleasure of your journey. Ken in Peterborough.
Ken Bowers, Ken, nowadays kids think that we live in the past when we talk about what we did when we were young. And they’re partially right, I enjoy looking back at my youth and remembering what I did that was fun and the not so fun things. But that’s where we learn and get knowledge from, we learn right from wrong, how to do and make things, what not to do (there are plenty of those lessons). It’s great being able to draw from those lessons and apply them to what we do in life, from tying a knot to learning to fish, to learning how to sharpen a knife and to clean a fish, to learning how to cook that fish. And all those skills and others that we use through out our life’s, we get to use those because we had great memories of when we grew up. Sure, some of those memories are thinking of things that we reminisce about, but they are still our memories that we can look back upon.
I feel sorry for some of these kids today that will look back at their youth and will only remember playing a video game in a dark basement, they’ll have very few memories of useful knowledge that will help them through life. I hope I’m wrong and that somewhere along the path they’ll pickup some useful skills and have those memories in their older ages. Sorry for the rant, just what I was feeling. Have a good one!
@@Hoaxer51 Absolutely! Those of us with grandchildren can introduce them to these experiences and give them a good time away from technology.
@@Hoaxer51 ,
You know , things are relative. I was watching a movie a few days ago. About a space pilot dodging asteroids. She was asked how she learned to do it. Her reply ? I am a video game master. It does lead to great eye / hand coordination. Plus guiding drones from a remote location thousands of miles away is very much like playing a video game. Except that it's real ! So , there are modern day life applications.
On the other hand , could they survive if stranded out in the remote forest ? Probably not.
@@donaldmiller8629 Application because of 2D digital screen overuse are very limited! In fact, the excessive use of computer screens, especially in early childhood, rewires and shrinks the brain in size and capacity, never to recover! If you don't use, train, exercise, ALL of the senses during certain developmental stages, they permanently atrophy!
@@Hoaxer51 but you are so right!

Oh my goodness. Your wooden tools could be from my Grandfather and Fathers Workshop. They were both carpenters and built chalets in Switzerland and especially my Grandfather used hand drills, plains and vices, all made of wood. He and my Father made wooden handles for their tools with the exact same “bench” I don’t know the english word for it, but, all these tools bring back soooo many memories. After they “carved” their handles, they sanded them and finally they put some sort of oil on them, not only to make them smooth, but also to preserve the wood. Oh, they both would have the time of their Life, working in your Workshop. (I could name most of your tool by name, growing up with most of what you have in your workshop)
Cali is so so sweet! I would love to give her a hug❤️❤️❤️👵👵👵
You and Cali truly live in a sort of paradise. Thank You for sharing your efforts and beauty with all of us. Workshop looks great, and rain catchment for the greenhouse was an excellent idea. Give Cali a BIG SMOOCH from Mike & Ronnie. GOD BLESS
Drone footage is a wonderful perspective compared to how most of us see the two dimensional earth usually. Very nice.
I love to watch your videos. It reminds me of my childhood. Not just a country but the tools that you use, or this bench. I can see myself, sitting there as a little boy, and trying to make something nice from a piece of wood. It's magical.
