CHARRED WOOD FOUNDATION for My OFF GRID Wilderness Log Cabin | Greenhouse Irrigation | Shou Sugi Ban

  • I erect the first walls of a charred wood basement, a foundation for my off-grid wilderness log cabin. A bear visits and I chase it away before my dog sees it. I build a raised bed in my greenhouse and install drip lines and a water pump powered by solar panels. Cali, my Golden Retriever, and I explore a local lake by canoe and a bull moose and whitetailed deer visit our remote homestead.

130sutphen... I hear and feel you. I would love nothing more myself. I adore nature, a natural way of living... Shawn is on the right and natural path, to a self sustainable way of life. Its how we were supposed to live in the first place. No greater joy there is than living a naturistic way of life.

Hellow Shawn. You can make hidroponic crops ❣, use perforated PVC pipe. I fill it with sponge and plant lettuce and strawberries. Use a hose and a pump to circulate the water through the inclinated pipe. The fish pond has water with nutrients. You produce all year round and save water ❣. The lettuce does not die if it freezes❣Greetings to Patagonia Argentina ❤🇦🇷❤ Mónica

It's one of those things folks seem to get hung up on at times. Even I have. I mean, back when steel tools were developed I doubt there were many people sticking with stone axes if they had a choice just because it seemed more romantic. I think it's a great idea to have a small set of all hand tools and understand how they work in case you have to use them one day, but the most precious commodity in life is time, and power tools save you so much of it, and preserve your body. I am happy to see him utilize modern building techniques, I mean he was before really, PVC drains, solar panels etc.

is it just me or when watching Shawn, is all you can remember is "measure twice cut once" ? it is like everything he does is measured and slow but fast because it is smooth. I learned finish carpentry from the nicest dude, way back in 1988. He was this exact same way. so slow, and yet so fast because it was this very considered type of movement.

SO agreed... like all the builds before were preparation for this build.... and not only that, but the workshop is a small indicator of how improved the new build will be, as the log construction was so exact in the fit and design. And the basement is as you all say, kind of a continuation of the root cellar concept of charring the wood and such.

Bears and other predators usually will not stay very close to humans. Humans being at the very peak of the predator pyramid. Human beings are the most dangerous predators on the Earth. Humans will even hunt and kill each other. The only other animal that I know of that does that is the Chimpanzee. And they are only two chromasomes shy of being humans themselves.

I had to excavate recently and found the old wood, most of it turning to dust. A couple boards were intact and remarkably smelled like fresh pine when I broke one.

Just a tip from a former Florida resident...
Sand will eat your tools while your back is turned! It pays to make a habit of never putting them down on the ground. Get an apron, a bucket, build a wooden box...whatever suits you.
I bought an older house and while working in the sandy yard I found an old hammer, pliers, tin snips, and a garden trowel were usable; a tape measure that was rusted up too bad to use; and innumerable toys. I lost two crappy knives and some of my garden tools from carelessness before I made myself a tool caddy.

When planting root bound potted plants always check the root system. I if it is terribly bound up in the bottom of pot then you tear away the very bottom just to unbind and give fresh start. If it is moderately bound up then just fluff the bottom to help it out. And if there is hardly any roots then you just pop it straight in. Have fun in the garden and stay clear of those bears! :)
